EDC Panthers playoff run thing of beauty updating strategic plan

By RACHEL MADISON Staff Writer The Economic Development Corporation decided to make updating their strategic plan a priority over the next few months. At the board’s December meeting, Economic Development Director Matt Powell said the current strategic plan is “very much out of date” and he wants to move on a request for proposals to update that plan right away. “I’d like to find a consultant to work with us to craft a modern, realistic, updated, forward-looking strategic plan that we could operate under for the next two to three years,” he said. “I want to get cracking on putting that [RFP] together for January.” The Board approved a motion to allow Powell to move forward with the RFP. “I want us to get more of a strategic side of our plan versus my side, which is more of an emotional side,” said Vice President John Clark. “We’ve got so many amazing things happening and we don’t want to do something and then a year later, we’re already behind.” Powell added that while he knows each consultant will have their own process for coming up with a solid strategic plan, he wants to make sure they are willing to work with city officials, staff and local businesses to make sure the plan aligns with Liberty Hill’s future. “This is not only to help guide our direction, but it’s also a good opportunity to allow us to take the temperature of the people we serve,” he said. The board authorized Vice President Jamie Etzkorn to continue drafting the bylaws and have Attorney Cobby Caputo provide a legal review before bringing a final draft back to the board.

By SCOTT AKANEWICH Sports Editor When Liberty Hill began its quest for a state championship six weeks ago, the ultimate goal was to lift a trophy on the field at AT&T Stadium in Arlington when all was said and done and the smoke had cleared. Indeed, the Panthers claimed a trophy to take home with them, but it was of the runner-up variety, the result of a hard-fought 23-14 loss at the hands of South Oak Cliff in the title game. However, not to be lost in the disappointment of defeat is the fact of the 3,240 high schools across the entire state of Texas, only 24 were left standing to play championship games across the 12 divisions that make up the six classifications – and Liberty Hill was one of them. Newly-opened LHISD schools using events to help set culture, tradition

By KRISTEN MERIWETHER Staff Writer As the first graders at Santa Rita Elementary exited the gym to the front of the school for their class Jingle Bell Run on Dec. 15, their eyes scanned the line of waiting parents. When a student found their parent or grandparent in the crowd, they smiled and waved, excited to see a familiar face on campus. As the students made their laps with holiday music playing in the background they could hifive their parents or sneak in a quick hug before heading back to their regularly scheduled classes. “I think it makes our kids feel like we’re involved, like we’re excited for them,” Santa Rita parent Jessica Shumway said after the event. The Jingle Bell Run was a fun way to allow parents to take part in their child’s P.E. classes. Events like these were not allowed on campuses last school year due to COVID. But now that campuses are fully open,

Crowd shows up for Liberty Hill in tough loss to South Oak Cliff

By KRISTEN MERIWETHER Staff Writer ARLINGTON — Following a tough 23-14 loss in the Conference 5A Division II Football Championship game Saturday, Liberty Hill High School Principal Jon Bever walked down the line of Panther players and hung their silver medals around their necks. Several players were in tears following the hardfought game. It wasn’t the outcome the team had hoped for, but Bever offered his heartfelt congratulations to the young men he leads on campus everyday. “The boys played incredibly well. It was a great game,” Bever told The Independent. “I’m just so proud of the boys, proud of the coaches, proud of our staff, and proud of the support.” Bever was one of 42,275 in attendance at the game, which was held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. Despite being over three hours from Liberty Hill, the purple and gold was well represented with a rowdy student section, a thundering band and plenty of noisemakers in the fan section. “It was probably the biggest fan support we’ve had all season long,” Bever said. “I’m really proud of the fans for coming out and supporting us.” During his post-game press conference, head coach Kent Walker commented on the support the crowd showed his team during the game. “I looked up at one point and thought, what a community, what a special place for us to be, Liberty Hill,” Coach Walker said. “The support these guys got, it’s amazing. With the hard work they put in, they also deserve it, in my opinion.” Superintendent Steven Snell handed the second place trophy to the team on the field

Filing window for city council election opens Jan. 19

By RACHEL MADISON Staff Writer Three elected City positions are up for grabs in 2022, and the filing window opens on Jan. 19. The positions available include two City Council seats— Place 2, currently occupied by Kathy Canady, and Place 4, currently occupied by Tony

DeYoung—as well as Mayor Liz Branigan’s position. City Administrator Lacie Hale said a notice of election was posted Dec. 17, and city staff is currently working on a website that will include all of the important dates as well as an informational packet for those interested in running for City Council or Mayor. That

website and packet should be available to the public by Jan. 10, Hale said. The filing window will open Jan. 19 and close on Feb. 18. Candidates have the option to withdraw or submit as a writein candidate for five calendar days after the filing window closes. Hale said the requirements

to run for an elected position include being a resident within the City of Liberty Hill’s limits, being at least 18 years of age, and being a registered voter. Early voting is April 25 - May 3. Election Day is May 7 and voting will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Municipal Court building in Liberty Hill.

By KRISTEN MERIWETHER Staff Writer Williamson County and Cities Health District reported the first confirmed case of the Omicron variant in the County on Monday. The newest COVID variant was originally reported

on Nov. 24 in Botswana and South Africa, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The first U.S. case was reported on Dec. 1. The WCCHD said Omicron has been reported in multiple counties throughout Texas. According to a Dec. 2 Science Brief from the CDC it is

unknown how efficiently the Omicron variant can spread from person to person. The report also said t is unclear if infection with the Omicron variant is associated with more severe disease. The brief said there is no data available to assess how well the vaccine works against the new variant. Common symptoms caused by the Omicron variant include cough, congestion, runny nose and fatigue and are the same as other COVID-19 variants. WCCHD is urging residents to get tested prior to traveling for the holidays. Williamson County is partnering with Curative to offer free testing near Liberty Hill at the Leander Public Library Annex Building and at the Georgetown Public

Library. A full list of free testing sites can be found at www. wcchd.org/covid-19/testing. php At-home testing kits can also be purchased at most pharmacies. WCCHD is also urging residents to help prevent the spread of germs by wearing masks, following social distancing practices, staying home if sick, getting fully vaccinated and receiving a vaccine booster. “Vaccines remain the best public health measure to protect people from COVID-19, slow transmission, and reduce the likelihood of new variants emerging,” Dr. Amanda Norwood, Local Health Authority and WCCHD Medical Director said in a press release. “COVID-19 vaccines are highly effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalizations, and death. Everyone five years and older are encouraged to protect themselves from COVID-19 by getting fully vaccinated, and everyone ages 16 years and older should get a booster shot when eligible.”

Free Masons have served Liberty Hill since 1875

By JAMES WEAR Columnist ‘Tis the season of giving, and perhaps no organization in Liberty Hill exemplifies this spirit better than the Free Masons, who recently completed their annual Christmas poinsettia sale with proceeds benefiting Hope House. The Free Masons are now poised to begin raising money for scholarships benefiting Liberty Hill seniors through a raffle on a steer donated by a local rancher. Anyone familiar with the Free Masons and the group’s guiding principles shouldn’t be surprised by the organization’s generosity and devotion to the community. Looking back, many of Liberty Hill’s most widely-respected citizens— former mayor and longtime school board member Nathan Wetzel is a prime example-were members of the local lodge, which was chartered in 1875. According to the Texas Historical Marker affixed to the exterior wall of Free Mason’s building, which is located downtown across from the Liberty Hill City Hall, “​Chartered in 1875, Liberty Hill Lodge No. 432, A.F. & A.M., met first in the Methodist Church. When this building was finished in 1883, the Masons purchased the top floor for their lodge hall and built an exterior wooden stairway to the room. This native stone structure was erected by Scottish-born John Munro, who operated a hardware store below the Masonic Hall. The lodge bought the first floor from his heirs in 1945 and often use it as a community meeting place.”

The Free Masons’ website has a section devoted to the organization’s history, including minutes from the first meeting that was held. “Liberty Hill Lodge # 432 met at the Liberty Hill Academy at 9 p.m. July 24th, 1875. The time and place set by the Deputy Grand Master, for installing the officers and setting the Lodge to registry work. Deputy Grand Master Norton Moses in the East, Brother Babcock in the West, Brother T. M. Price in the South. Brothers Babcock and Price were members of Norton Moses Lodge # 336. The following were installed as officers of the lodge: J. L. Dunn, Worshipful Master, A. J. Miller, Senior Warden & T. S. Snyder, Junior Warden. “The by-laws in the Taylor Monitor were adopted for the lodge and the member dues were set at $2. 00 a year. The fee for each degree was set at $11. 00. Brother T. N. Bryson presented the lodge with a set of lodge jewels. The stated meeting time was set to be the Saturday night after the full moon in each month. We now have a legally constituted Liberty Hill Lodge # 432 in Liberty Hill, Texas.” The website also included a bit of history pertaining to how the Free Masons came to call the organization’s current downtown location its headquarters. “A resolution was offered and a committee appointed to get a better lodge room on May 26th, 1883. June of 1883 was a busy month for Liberty Hill Lodge #432. It had two applications for initiation and affiliation, two Entered Apprentice

examinations and a Fellowcraft degree. The Lodge was meeting in the third story of the Methodist Church. To me, it just solidifies community and family, and all the things we’re trying to do in Liberty Hill.” As LHISD continues to grow, there will be more campuses to spread that community spirit to. This year the district opened two new campuses, Louine Noble Elementary and Santa Rita Middle School. Santa Rita Elementary opened the year prior. Having the Santa Rita schools embedded in the newly-developed neighborhood has helped establish the tradition and culture, and get critical buy-in from parents. “This is a part of our neighborhood. It’s less than a five-minute walk from our house,” Jessica’s husband, Dave Shumway, said after the event. “The school forms part of our little neighborhood. For most of the people in the community, it’s a part of the community in kind of a unique way.” And that Santa Rita Ranch community continues to grow as more houses come online. Santa Rita Elementary School Principal Kendell Luedtke said the school grew from 330 students when it first opened to 820 this year. Families are coming from all over the country, bringing their own culture and expectations with them. With the

campus closed to families for the first year, creating that Liberty Hill culture with the parents was harder. But when the school finally held its first open-to-parents event on Oct. 21, parents were ready. As a Drug Enforcement Agency helicopter landed at the back of the school as part of Red Ribbon Week, more than 50 parents were on-hand to share the experience with their children. The parent didn’t have to ask the child what they did at school that day. They saw it with them. “We had such positive feedback from that, not only from our parents, but also our staff. We were all so excited to see families and for families to have those moments with their children,” Luedtke said. “Because at an elementary level, those families want to experience those moments with their little ones.” Across Ronald Reagan Boulevard at Santa Rita Middle School the students are a little older, but getting parents involved is just as important, particularly for a new campus. Principal Josh Curtis said they have a beautiful new building and want to share what goes on inside with the community. Curtis said before the campus was fully open to parents at the start of the school year they held events outside and brought food trucks into the parking lot. “We want parents to know what’s going on inside the

walls,” Curtis said. “We don’t want them to just drop their students off, not see them for eight hours, and be guessing or wondering what is taking place inside a building.” Snell said the district spends a lot of time defining culture and ensuring all new employees understand the expectations. He said when the district opens a new campus they try to ensure a good portion of the staff are Liberty Hill veterans so they can carry the traditions into their new campus. Noble Elementary Principal Dawn Hudson said her newly-opened campus had roughly half new staff, with some of the new teachers coming from as far away as New York. To get everyone on the same page, she said their staff got together beginning in August to discuss values, vision and mission, and committed to strategies to accomplish those goals. As LHISD campuses opened to parents in November, Hudson was able to plan for larger, parent-involved events like Thanksgiving lunch and the Storybook Parade at Halloween. The events helped teachers and staff connect with parents for the first time at Noble, a tradition they hope continues. “If we can build that partnership with parents, and they feel like they are welcomed here and their voice matters, they’re going to want to come more,” Hudson said.

By SCOTT AKANEWICH Sports Editor ARLINGTON -- On most occasions when Liberty Hill’s defense holds an opponent under 30 points, the chance of victory is high, as the Panthers’ Slot-T offense usually takes care of the rest. However, when up against against the fastest, most athletic defense they had seen all season, the Purple-and-Gold was largely shut down in a 2314 defeat at the hands of the Golden Bears in the Class 5A Division II state championship game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on Saturday. Liberty Hill head coach Kent Walker said the athleticism South Oak Cliff had at its dis-

By SCOTT AKANEWICH Sports Editor When RJ Sanchez sits on the bench, the Liberty Hill senior guard is doing more that just waiting his turn to get into the game – he’s learning. “I always keep my head in the game,” said Sanchez. “If I see something out on the court, I can yell to my teammates, but it also helps when I’m in the game.” Sanchez plays a role that is not always desirable, but is critical on any team – the ability to come off the bench and provide a spark while starters are getting a brief rest from the action – and not necessarily to put the ball in the basket himself, he said.

“I don’t look to score, but to facilitate things for others,” said Sanchez. “I’m more of a defensive player, so I want to be able to get my teammates shots.” Liberty Hill head coach Barry Boren understands and appreciates what Sanchez brings to the court – tangibly and intangibly. “I can’t say enough good things about RJ Sanchez,” said Boren. “Everybody needs players like him – he’s a perfect complimentary person and one of the guys everyone welcomes into the group. You can see he really cares about his teammates.” However, one of the challenges unique to bench players

Thomas then took his usual middle linebacker spot back on the Golden Bears’ next possession and on a 3rd-and-10 play from the South Oak 42-yard-line, Thomas burst into the backfield as Henry-Jennings looked downfield for a receiver only to rush the signal-caller into an off-target throw that was broken up by Carlton Schrank, forcing a punt that gave the ball back to Liberty Hill at its own 13-yard line. On 3rd-and-8 from the Panthers’ 34-yard line, Pitchford took off on a 62-yard jaunt down the left sideline before

finally being brought down from behind at the South Oak Cliff 4-yard-line. From there, it was Thomas who once again traded sides of the line of scrimmage and powered his way in from one yard out to level the score at 14-14. Long returned the second-half kickoff 39 yards to provide the Panthers with positive field position to begin the second half before facing a 4th-and-2 at the Golden Bears’ 28, when it was Thomas who converted the first down on a 10-yard run. But, Liberty Hill could advance no farther than the 17, from which Minix hooked another kick wide left to leave

The remainder of the third quarter was a stubborn battle of field position as both sides failed to make inroads toward the other’s end zone and the game entered the final quarter still tied at 14-14 after a scoreless period. South Oak Cliff kicker Diego Varela booted a 29-yard field goal to put the Golden Bears in the lead with 8:25 left in regulation and it looked as if the Panthers’ pair of missed kicks might be the difference in the game. Playing more with a purpose Senior hoopster got stronger, more confident

By SCOTT AKANEWICH Sports Editor Walker Weems always had the size to dominate on a basketball court. However, Liberty Hill’s 6-foot-5 senior center didn’t necessarily have the strength – and the confidence that accompanies it – to be able to go toe-to-toe with his fellow big boys down low in the paint. Going into his senior season, Weems decided to finally put all the ingredients into the recipe and once it emerged from the oven and he stepped onto the court for his final season in Purple-and-Gold, he’s become the more assertive and authoritative player Panthers head coach Barry Boren had been trying to coax out of him for the past three years. According to Weems, it was simply a matter of making a commitment to himself and what kind of player he truly wanted to be. “I just decided to put the work in,” said Weems. “So I would be more of a threat.” Whereas before Weems would drift in and out of the post area and many times be found out on the perimeter, he now spends most of his time under the basket where a player of his size and caliber belongs.

“Coach Boren just tells me to post up every chance I get,” said Weems. “But, I’m still out on the perimeter on certain plays.” But, to get better at basketball, one needs to play basketball. So, in addition to strength and agility training, Weems began to get games wherever, whenever and against whoever he could, he said. “I would play pickup games when we had open gym (at the high school) during the summer and also play on outdoor courts against bigger guys and even adults,” said Weems. “What that did was really improve my ballhandling skills and my guard moves.” Due to his newfound versatility, Boren said he now has a player that can perform in a variety of roles depending on the situation at a given time during a game. “Walker is our x-factor,” he said. “He can do a lot of different things on a basketball court.” Boren said Weems fills one very important piece of the Panthers’ puzzle. “When I went to set up my team for this season, I needed two things to start with,” he said. “I needed a point guard –

which I have in (senior) Zane Lauper and a center, which I have in Walker and if you watch our team, the two of them play off each other.” Weems also said he can now provide more of the intangible qualities that are expected of him at this stage of his Panthers career. “I’m a senior now, so I need to step up and be a leader,” he said. “Which means I can’t be shy with the ball – I feel like I’m one of the best players out there.” But, there’s more to Weems than just basketball. Currently, he’s not sure of where he will attend college next year, but he certainly knows what he wants to study once he gets there. “Definitely something with technology or engineering,” said Weems, whose favorite subject in school is forensic science. “Maybe computer science because everything is about technology these days.” When Weems want to unwind, he will plant himself in front of his video game console, which is something he said provides respite from the pressures of everyday teenage life. “I really enjoy it because it gets my mind off things,” he said.

Weems lists Rainbow Six Siege – a first-person shooter – as his favorite at the moment, as opposed to the ever-popular Call of Duty, which is preferred by most gamers, but for a very specific reason, he said. “There’s a lot more strategy involved instead of just running around and getting shot,” said Weems. “Also, there are a lot more different ways to kill

people.” In fact, Weems can get so immersed in the online action, he once set a personal record which may never be broken. “I was playing NBA 2017 and was at it for about 16 hours straight,” he said. “From about 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. the next morning.” Back in the real world, though, Weems is a much more confi-

dent player than he was even last season, armed with an entirely new, more focused mentality thanks to his newfound commitment. But, that doesn’t mean he’s also changed off the court. “I tend to be really quiet and not express myself very much,” said Weems. “But, if I’m around the right people, I can be funny and energetic.”

GIRLS BASKETBALL BRIEFS Lady Panthers fall to No. 1 Cedar Park

By SCOTT AKANEWICH Sports Editor For the first half of Liberty Hill’s home game against Class 5A No. 1 and defending state champions Cedar Park on Tuesday afternoon, the Lady Panthers hung tough with the Timberwolves – only trailing 26-20 at halftime – but eventually fell to the visitors by a score of 58-34. Senior Ashlyn Calhoun led Liberty Hill with 11 points – including a trio of 3-pointers, while fellow senior Emma Hubbard added 10 in defeat. Lady Panthers head coach Chris Lange wasn’t pleased with the result on the scoreboard, but wasn’t disappointed

with the effort of his players. “We had to be patient, but we weren’t trying to stall them or anything,” he said. “We started off the game with three straight turnovers and were down early, so to go in a halftime only down by six wasn’t bad.” Hubbard burst from the starting gates with five points in the first quarter, highlighted by a three, along with another from Madison Walker, but Cedar Park still led, 17-10, after one period of play. The second stanza saw the Lady Panthers tighten up defensively to go with backto-back buckets by Gabby Mundy and a Calhoun three to close the gap to six at 26-20 at halftime. mount a comeback, Long fumbled on the ensuing kickoff, which was recovered by the Golden Bears who only had to line up in victory formation to claim the championship. Pitchford led Liberty Hill with 158 yards on 20 carries, as the Panthers ran for 278 yards in all, the lowest output since gaining 270 in a season-opening 12-7 home loss to Ellison. Long picked up 67 yards on 16 attempts, while Thomas gained 43 yards on seven carries and both Liberty Hill touchdowns. Seniors Aaron Brewer and Lloyd Johnson, Jr. each had

six tackles to lead the Panthers, while Thomas added five. According to Johnson, he and his defensive mates knew they needed to neutralize the Golden Bears’ offense as much as they could in order to give their own a chance. “We knew we had to just go out and get as many stops as we could,” he said. “We had 11 new starters on offense this year and it just took time for them to come together.” Thomas said the Golden Bears were a formidable and worthy opponent. “They presented a great challenge,” he said. “They’re real-

ly athletic, really fast. Props to them, they executed on offense and they had really great athletes.” Aside from the disappointing result, though, Thomas took time to recognize the special journey he and his teammates had just come to the end of. “This season – I mean, just the brotherhood that’s through the whole team,” he said. “It’s just I’ve never been a part of something like that – it’s truly a family. I know whatever I need, they’ll be there for me. So just just having this family – a second family, it’s really close and means a lot to me.” Liberty Hill ended the season

with a 13-3 record and a district championship to its name, but it was the big one that got away in the end that will be painful moving forward – particularly for the players that won’t be back next season, the said Walker. “Our senior class is a special group,” he said. “Most of you all know what they’ve been through and what we’ve been through over the past year and I can’t thank them enough for the support they’ve given me. Just an awesome group of young men.”

Senior linebacker Andon Thomas also added a pair of touchdowns and 54 yards on 10 carries in addition to his usual duties on defense, where he had 13 tackles. However, the offensive high-

light of the night for the Panthers was a 13-yard scoring pass from quarterback Reese Vickers to senior strong end Kasyn Herman in the waning moments of the first half – a play that marked the first reception of the offensive lineman’s entire career. Liberty Hill’s special teams also pulled a trick of of its bag with a fake on which Thomas dropped back to punt on fourth down, only to pass the ball to Pitchford, who found a wideopen Kade McMahan down the right sideline for a 49-yard touchdown. Fourth round Liberty Hill 43, Alamo Heights 40 Next it was on to Bobcat Stadium in San Marcos, where the Panthers defeated Alamo Heights by a 43-40 score, as Thomas led Liberty Hill with 110 yards on 11 carries and a pair of touchdowns, including a 33-yard scoring rumble to provide what ultimately ended up being the winning points. Once again, the Panthers trailed at halftime, 19-14, before roaring back in the second half, only unlike the previous week when Liberty Hill’s defense had shut Rouse

down in the final two quarters, the Mules kept pace by scoring three touchdowns in the second half to keep the game close. “Tonight, we didn’t play very good defense,” said Walker. “Last week (against Rouse), we made some adjustments at halftime and played pretty well in the second half defensively, but tonight we didn’t play well and that’s on me.” State semifinals Liberty Hill 42, Crosby 14 In what was its third rematch at the respective same stages of the postseason as the previous year’s playoffs, Liberty Hill not only found itself paired up with Crosby once again in the state semifinals, but at the same venue – Merrill Green Stadium in Bryan – where the Panthers had suffered a heartbreaking, 62-61 overtime loss to the Cougars. But, this time it was quite a different proposition altogether, as Liberty Hill posted a comprehensive 42-14 victory over the team that had vanquished its title hopes less than 12 months earlier. Pitchford ran for 150 yards on 22 carries to go with two touchdowns, while Long had

97 yards on 15 carries and a pair of scores. The game’s momentum swung dramatically on the game’s opening drive when Crosby sliced through the Panthers defense and drove the length of the field only to suffer an errant snap on a 2nd-and-goal play inside the 5-yard-line. Following the fumble recovery by senior Aaron Brewer, Liberty Hill mounted a nineplay, 90-yard drive that culminated with Pitchford’s first score of the contest from 20 yards out and a 7-0 lead. “No doubt about it – that set the tone for the game,” said Walker. “It really got us going.” Once again, though, it was the Panthers’ defense that stepped up in a critical situation, he said. “The effort from our defense was there all night,” said Walker. “We kind of got back on our heels on that first drive, but once they had that bad snap and we got on it, that just gave us all the momentum.”

Trip to Jerry World fabulous...except the ending

By SCOTT AKANEWICH Sports Editor Somet i m e s when you walk into a place, you’re simply o v e r whelmed by the sheer magnitude and gravity of your surroundings. Many years ago, I went to Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles and thought to myself, if there’s such a thing as Baseball Heaven, this is it, with the pristine look of the place, powder-blue outfield wall and a majestic view of the San Gabriel Mountains off in the distance. Well, we experienced that same feeling upon arriving at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on Saturday morning for the Panthers’ state championship game. However, the sense of awe began the evening before when we rolled into town after dark and first gazed upon the venue from a distance with the spectacular arched roof of the stadium rising up above the surrounding buildings. In fact, the building somewhat resembles an enormous spacecraft that has landed for a visit to Earth before once again embarking back into outer space. The next morning, though, it was time to venture inside the mammoth structure without

acting too much like a tourist. After all, we were there to do a job in chronicling the final step of Liberty Hill’s journey to the state title game where the country boys would take on the city slickers from South Oak Cliff, which only had to take a short bus ride from its home in Dallas, a brief 22-mile jaunt for the Golden Bears east on Interstate 30. But, that didn’t mean we couldn’t still soak in the experience of our first-ever visit to The House That Jerry Built. On the way to the media entrance, we passed by a bronze statue of legendary Cowboys coach Tom Landry, dapperly-dressed and stoic as ever just like he was for 29 seasons as Dallas’ sideline boss, topped off with his trademark fedora. Upon receiving the magic ticket known as a media pass, we entered the stadium through a pair of giant glass double doors that were unlocked, thinking it was the proper way in, only to be stopped by a stadium worker and asked how we got in. “The door, ma’am,” we responded. Soon after, a supervisor arrived on the scene and asked the same question. “The door, ma’am,” we once again answered, getting the third-degree interrogation as if we had mistakenly trod upon hallowed ground. “Which way to the press box,

please,” we asked. After being gruffly directed through another set of double doors, we arrived at the elevator, where we happened upon the first of many friendly folk we would encounter the rest of the day. The thing we love most about our new home state of Texas is how kind people are, which is why it’s a bit shocking to be treated with such disdain as we had been moments earlier by the door cops. Must’ve been from California. Anyway, the gentleman whose job it is to run the elevator to the press box, as well as the other levels, was an elderly gentleman who was neatly dressed in a dark blue suit with the famous Cowboys star on the lapel. One of the other passengers asked how his day was going. “Well, it’s had its ups and downs,” he said. Get it? Elevator? Ups and downs? On the way up to the press box, we made a stop at what’s known as the Hall of Fame Level. “Is this some kind of VIP level?” we asked. “Oh, yes,” he answered. “There are a lot of luxury suites, including the one Mr. Jones uses.” “You mean Jerry,” we said. “Well, to anyone who works here, it’s Mr. Jones,” he said. He went to describe how nice

the Cowboys owner is to all the team and stadium employees, which was good to hear, as people who can afford to build billion-dollar football cathedrals are usually stereotyped as aloof and snobby – too good for the common man. Not the case with Jerry, though – ahem, sorry, Mr. Jones. The press box was unlike any working environment we’ve ever found ourselves in over the years, with a beautiful view of the field below, as the Purple-and-Gold warmed up for the biggest game of their lives. Funny, Every football field in the United States of America – including the gridiron at Panther Stadium – measures the same 120 yards long and 53 1/3 yards wide. But, even on television – no less in person – one that resides in such a massive stadium just seems so much bigger – larger than life even. All that being said, we simply had to go down to the field before the game – you know, just to do it. Walking down the tunnel toward the entrance, one thinks of all the famous names that have taken the same path on their way to field of battle with the giant star at the 50-yard line. Over the years, we had heard an urban legend that Jerry – sorry, Mr. Jones – had wanted nothing to be red in the entire

stadium, as that might somehow be misinterpreted as some kind of show of support for his team’s ancient rivals – the team formerly known as the Redskins – now Washington Football Team. As a result, he even had the fire lane markings – normally red – painted blue and in doing so incurred a daily fine from the authorities. So, it was to our great dismay upon first walking down the tunnel where the team buses can drive directly into the stadium to pick up and drop off teams right at their respective locker-room doors, to see red fire-lane markers. Really? Nothing like a good story being ruined by reality. However, as we proceeded farther down the tunnel and reached the point where the players exit the locker room and walk out onto the field – there they were! “FIRE LANE – NO PARKING” in glorious Dallas Cowboys blue. Fabulous. Upon exiting said tunnel, there is an instant feeling of enormousness one is engulfed by as the gigantic dimensions of the building take full effect on your senses, not the least of which is the gargantuan video board that is suspended over the field. After a nice stroll around to the Panthers’ sideline and a wave to the purple-clad sea of supporters that filled an entire

Liberty Hill’s focus is to establish clear, responsible development regulations with appropriate design criteria that will provide opportunities for innovative and creative approaches to development while supporting an economically viable and sustainable community. The Comprehensive Plan Update will include at minimum: review and analysis of the current Comprehensive Plan, data collection and analysis, citizen participation, goals and objectives, future land use, zoning designation amendments as well as preservation of open space and parks and recreational planning or other elements as identified by the Planning & Zoning Commission and approved by the City Council. But, we can honestly say after our overall experience during our visit to Jerry World, if there is indeed a Football Heaven, we’ve already paid it a visit.
