SPORTS NEWS APRIL 2018
Sports Profile Saskia Rudge-Thompson and Tess Belshire
A huge welcome to the 5th edition of our LGGS Sports Newsletter. The winter Olympic Games hosted by Pyeongchang and #internationalwomensday have been a huge inspiration throughout this short ten week term within the world of PE and sport at LGGS. It never ceases to amaze me how courageous, strong, independent and fierce the girls at LGGS can be. I have taken inspiration and courage from the many situations I have been witness to this term; from girls wanting to step in last minute for fixtures, solo to whole class dance performances in front of large crowds at Inter-house dance competitions, individuals offering time and energy to help with events and activities, to the joy and elation during lessons when mastering something they haven’t been able to perform before. We live in a society where it is so easy to say the words ‘I can’t’ do something ... yet, it is acts such as these that should be remembered and used to believe that ‘we can do’ and anything is possible.
It is not solely about ability, but willingness, experimentation and commitment that makes us who we are at the core ... fierce, powerful, strong young women. This term has seen LGGS host their very first gymnastics showcase. If there is something I have learnt over the past term, it is that the gymnast community is a most supportive and motivated network of people. The responsibility and collaboration demonstrated during the planning of this event, by the LGGS elite performers at Lancaster City Gymnastics Club left me in awe. Their ability to act as the most professional role models for a range of abilities and Year groups was outstanding, and as a result, a stupendous evening was had by all. We say a huge thank you and farewell to our 2017-2018 ‘Sports Leadership Team’, you have left a brilliant legacy which the new team can build on. I would like to take this opportunity to make a special mention to Megan Dillon who has been an outstanding Sports Captain and whose shoes will undoubtedly prove hard to fill. We

welcome our new Sports Leadership Team who are introduced below along with the Girls Leadership and Marketing (G.L.A.M.) Squad who are newly elected and have used this term to receive official training and time to plan and prepare new initiatives that will start this term. We would like to welcome back Miss Broadfield who returns from her maternity leave and we are also very fortunate to be keeping Miss Wolstenholme on for one day each week and we would all like to thank her for her enthusiasm and commitment over the past year. I hope this newsletter effectively summaries not only sporting successes, but also how being involved in sport and physical activity both within and outside of school, can develop a whole person; their social, emotional and physical well-being. The PE department hopes that you had a relaxing Easter break and promises good weather for summer sports during the summer term.

SPORTS WEEK AT LGGS DAY 1 To start Sports Week off in style each form took part in a ‘Wake and shake’ to Tina Turner’s ‘Proud Mary’ during Registration. The routine was demonstrated by Mrs Russell and Miss Sharples on the whiteboard and the whole of Year 12 made a video of this which they presented as part of their assembly! Forty girls were chosen to take part in an Able, Gifted and Talented Workshop led by Sally Whittaker. In the morning Year 7 and 8 learnt a ‘Divas and Legends’ routine and in the afternoon Year 9, 10 and 12 performed an ‘Iconic Movie Dance Through the Decades!’ At Lunchtime, Year 9 student, E. Ozanne, led a Kick Boxing session - E. Ozanne has taken part in Kick Boxing for a number of years and she planned and delivered an insightful session where the girls practised a range of punching and kicking techniques. In the afternoon, over fifty Year 11 girls opted to take part in an introduction to Rugby Union with Martin Powell, England Community Rugby Coach. DAY 2 A selection of Year 7-10 pupils
enjoyed a group cycle ride to Morecambe with British Cycling coach Tom Leivers. It was fantastic to see the girls who had committed to learning to ride with Tom prior to Christmas, get out and test their skills on the open tracks and roads. At lunchtime, Miss Wolstenholme led a Tchoukball session. Tchoukball is a relatively new
sport, invented in the late 1960s. It combines the pace and excitement of handball and volleyball and is the fastest handball sport in the world today. DAY 3 Martin Powell taught all one hundred and fifty pupils in Year 7 to play Touch Rugby. Each form went to the field for an hour session which ended in small sided games. At lunchtime the Year 10 G.L.A.M Squad dancers led a Waacking Dance workshop. Waacking is a form of dance created in Los Angeles during the 1970’s disco era. It consists of moving the arms to the music beat, typically in a movement of the arms over and behind the shoulder. Waacking also contains other elements such as posing and footwork. Waacking puts a strong emphasis on musicality and interpretation of the music and its rhythm. It also took inspiration stylistically from movie stars such as Bette Davis and James Dean. DAY 4 The theme for this year’s dress
up day was a homage to #Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. Some of the stand out outfits included the infamous ‘Cool Runnings’ Jamaican Bobsleigh Team complete with handmade bobsleighs and the IT technicians dressing up as supporters from different countries with their very own cow bells! Year 9 had the opportunity to take part in Wheelchair Basketball with local club Lancaster Bulldogs. At lunchtime a group of Year 10 students who had been selected based on their performance in Year 10 Sports Leadership lessons were rewarded by having a session with the Bulldogs.
At lunchtime, the Sports Leadership Team organised a sports themed quiz with t-shirts and Easter egg prizes. Finally, throughout the day a Sports Relief cycle challenge took place in the gym. 40 staff and Sixth Form students cycled for half an hour each from 9am 3.30pm in a bid to cycle as far as we could as a school. Pupils could pay to guess how far the combined three bikes travelled over the day, reaching 427 miles in total. The furthest male was Dr Rees, covering 15 miles, closely followed by Mrs Balcer in a close second with 14.6 miles, both narrowly pipping Mr Green. Just over £200 was raised for Sports Relief.

It is fantastic to see our girls enjoying gymnastics beyond core PE lessons. The Inter-Form Gymnastics competition was a fantastic opportunity for Year 7-9 pupils to show off the skills they had learnt during lessons within their own choreographed routine. This year, some of the most fantastic story telling was on display and we were lucky enough to showcase their talents in our first ever gymnastics evening during January.

Sports Profile Saskia Rudge-Thompson and Tess Belshire Gymnasics My main sport is Gymnastics, however I am also a keen dancer, and am excited to be able to continue with dance at a higher level after completing my A-levels at LGGS. I have been doing gymnastics for about 14 years in total, starting from the most basic toddler gymnastics classes, to now training at least 15 hours per week in the most elite squad in our gym. This year I have competed in three international competitions, one being based in the UK and the others being in Portugal and Belgium. It has been a great experience to compete against other countries
for example Azerbaijan, Israel, and even Australia and to learn new things, both in gymnastics but also great life skills that I will
I am a gymnast and a hockey player. I first started gymnastics when I was 5 years old in the recreation sessions at the University of Cumbria. I won a competition and was asked to join the City of Lancaster Gymnastics Club. I have moved through the squads and am now in the top squad, Diamond. The kind of gymnastics I do is not in the Olympics. It is called acrobatic gymnastics. You complete a routine either in a pair, a trio or if you are male in a group of 4. Your routine is 2 minutes long and contains a variety of moves including individual, group balances and dance. At the moment, I am in a trio with Grace Ip and a younger top. I train for 15 hours per week at the University of Cumbria. We do core strength, conditioning, aerobic tumbling and dance activities as part of our training. In January, I competed as a pair in Glasgow at the Scottish
invitational Championships where we just missed out on a medal coming 4th. Next we went to the Maia Acrobatic Cup in Portugal. The whole squad went and competed over three days. This was daunting but I was very proud of my performance. There were gymnasts from Belgium, Netherlands, France, Canada, Israel and many more countries. In March I competed in the North West Pre-lims and won!!! This meant we became part of the North West team competing in the National finals at Fenton Manor in Stoke on Trent. We came 4th but were delighted. I am now in a trio which I am really enjoying. We have competed in South Tyneside and won a North West competition in Wigan. Training takes up a lot of my time but I love it. The other members of my squad are fantastic, we all support each other. It makes me organised as I must make sure I fit all my school work in also
continue to use throughout my life. Although I already do a lot of Gymnastics and Dance outside of school, I am always keen to get involved with Sport within school, ranging from competing in and judging Inter-house Dance, to organising the Gymnastics showcase in January. Becoming Sports captain, has been a dream come true, and I hope to be able to inspire participation in sport at all levels and further improve PE in school, so that people can enjoy sport just as much as I always have. Saskia Rudge-Thompson
I volunteer to coach younger groups on Mondays so and I also help when we have low level competitions or fundraising events at our gym. When I am 16, I will take my first coaching qualification course. I have always played hockey for fun but recently started playing for Lancaster and Morecambe. We have matches on Saturdays. but it means that I do some sort of sport every day so I don’t have much spare time. Tess Belshire
