Where Every Day Feels Like theWeekend
Pickleball Expansion Approved
Pickleballplayershavesomethingnewtolookforwardtothisfall. TheArboratWillowLakeisgettingbiggeronthecourt.AtitsJune meeting,theBoardofDirectorsunanimouslyapproveda$186,000 expansionofthepickleballcomplex,addingfournewcourtsto theexistingsix.ConstructionisscheduledtobeginSeptember8 andisexpectedtobecompletebymid-November wellaheadof thewinterseason.
“Interestinpickleballhasexploded,”saidBoardPresidentCarol Whitfield.“Wehavemorethan200registeredpickleballplayers andthecourtsarebookedfrom7am untildarkeveryday Residentshavebeenaskingformorecourtsforquiteawhile.”
Thenewcourtswillbelocatedonthesouthsideoftheexisting complexandwillincludepermanentshadestructures,additional seating,andadedicatedwaterstation.Courtlightingwillalsobe upgradedacrosstheentirefacility.
TheBoardwillusereservefundstocompletetheproject,withno specialassessmentrequired.Residentsmaynoticesome temporaryparkingdisruptionsinthesouthparkinglotduring construction.

From the Deep Blue to The Arbor: Frank Okafor’s Second Act
FrankOkaforspent32yearsstudyingthingsmost ofusonlyseeinaquariums.Asamarinebiologist withtheNationalOceanicandAtmospheric Administration,Frankloggedthousandsofhours underwaterstudyingcoralreefsintheFlorida KeysandGulfofMexico,andeventheCoral TriangleinthePacific.
Today,at71,Frank’sfieldwork daysarebehindhim,buthis passionforaquaticlifeisvery muchalive.
Threeyearsago,Frank convertedthesparebedroom ofhisArborhomeintowhathe cheerfullycalls“TheLab.”
“Ineverintendedtoturnitintoanything,”hesaid, laughing.“Carolfromdownthestreetknockedon mydooroneafternoon,andthenextthingIknew, therewere14peopleinTheLab.”

Thisclimate-controlledspacehousessixcustom freshwateraquariums,includinga300-gallon centerpiecetankstockedwithrarecichlidspecies hehasbeenbreedingfornearlyadecade.Word spreadquickly,asitoftendoesatTheArbor,and beforelongFrankfoundhimselfhostinginformal “tanktours”forcuriousneighbors
foundedin2024andnow counts38members.Theclub meetsonthesecond Wednesdayofeachmonthin theCraftRoomandrecently donateda55-gallonaquarium toalocalelementaryschool, wheretheclubalsoprovides monthlyeducationalsessions.

The Aquarium Club meets the second Wednesday of each month at 2:00 p.m. in the Craft Room. New members are welcome to join.

Knowthewarningsigns.Thesymptomsofheat exhaustionincludeheavysweating,coolandpale skin,nausea,andweakness.Forheatstroke, whichisamedicalemergency,watchforhot,red, dryskinwitharapidpulseandpossibleconfusion. Whenindoubt,getindoors,hydrate,andcall911.
