Teaberry and wintergreen are listed as deer resistant on some gardening websites. However, it has been observed in Pennsylvania that deer do eat teaberry fruit and the plant itself in some areas of the state. Consumption of the teaberry plant by deer likely relates to the availability of other more palatable plants.

A random drawing was held from all the submitted photos in this year’s Sentinel “Show Us Your Deer” contest, and the winner was Frank Oburn of Belleville. Frank is 92 years young and says this is the biggest buck he’s ever taken! He wins a $150 gift certificate from contest sponsor Dan Pierce Outdoor Shop. Whitetails are the most widely distributed large animal in North America. They are found throughout most of the continental United States, southern Canada, Mexico, Central America and northern portions of South America as far south as Peru. The species is absent from much of the western United States, including Nevada, Utah and California (though its close relatives, the mule deer and black-tailed deer, can be found there).

Despite predators, 57 percent of fawns born in north central Pennsylvania and 72 percent of fawns born in central Pennsylvania survived through the summer. Although predators kill a percentage of fawns, the PGC has not observed many predator kills on older deer. They have captured and tracked more than 1,000 deer older than 7 months of age. Of these deer, they have confirmed 5 predator kills to date. For tagged deer, more than 70 percent of them will die due to hunting whereas predators account for less than 1 percent.
