Do you and your family have a distaster prepardeness kit or how about an emergency evacuation plan? A natural disaster can occur at any time without warning such as storms, flooding, earthquakes and unforseen power outages.. The best way to prepare is to have a plan before it strikes. 1.
Build a Kit of Emergecy Supplies
•
Create a plan to shelter in place.
•
Create an evacuatio plan to get away. Plan in advance how you will assemble your family and anticipate where you will go. Choose several desinations in differant directions.
•
Think first about fresh water, food and clean air.
•
Consider two kits. In one put everything you will need to stay where you are and the second kit should be smaller and light weight to take with you. 3. Be Informed

2. Make a Plan •
Plan in advance what you will do in an emergency. Be prepared to assess the situation.

Develop a Family Commuication Plan. Your family might not be together when disaster strikes, so plan on how to contact one another.

Use reusable lunch bags for children to take their lunch in. Pack healthy fruits and vegetables instead of pre-packaged snacks and a reusable water bottle or thermos for them to take their drinks in instead of prepackaged drinks.

Academic paper use generates mountains of waste. Choose processed chlorine free (PCF) paper, avoiding releases of dioxin and mercury in the bleaching process, and the highest percentage of recycled post-consumer waste (PCW) available.

Choosing refillable pens and pencils will not only save on waste, but will also save your wallet!
•
Cover school books in paper instead of plastic. Not only will it protect children’s books, it will be environmen-tally friendly and they can decorate it to fit their own personal style.

When parked and waiting for your child after school, turn off your ignition. Every 30 minutes of idling costs you nearly one-tenth of a gallon of fuel and produces 29 oz. of carbon dioxide.

Landscaping
Fire Pits and BBQ’s BBQ/ Fire Pits If you wish to cook outdoors, Town Center residents please refer to your lease documents for limitations on grilling in your neighborhood. All BBQ grills must be used at least 15 feet from your home to prevent damage to the siding. BBQ grills/ fire pits are not to be used under overhangs, eaves in garages or carports. Only commercially purchased above ground fire pits are allowed in family housing and must be used at least 15 feet from your home and within your own yard. When using BBQ grills / fire pits you must properly store flammable materials, keep a fire extinguisher or water source readily available and supervise all fires by an adult until extinguished. Please clean up after your pet!
Landscaping services are currently included in your rent. On your lawn service day, you will need to ensure that your lawn is free of toys and personal belongings so the mowers can cut your grass. You can have one large non moveable item in your yard such as a swing set or trampoline. Please see your District Office for Outdoor Policies. The mowers will cut within two (2) feet of the item. You will be responsible to cut the grass under and the two (2) feet around the item.
Pet droppings are odorous, unsightly, and a nuisance. More importantly, they can be a health hazard, especially for children. Therefore, pets must be kept under control so they do not defecate on parade fields, playgrounds, troop formation areas, sidewalks/walkways, common areas, miniature playgrounds of the housing areas, and neighbors' yards. You will immediately clean up droppings when your pet defecates outside of your residence yard.
You may choose to maintain your own lawn if desired. Contact your Community Office for a sign to put in your window.
Droppings in your residence, including your yard, will be removed daily.
If the home you live in has a fence either provided or installed by you, you are responsible for the maintenance of your yard. All flowerbeds adjacent to your home are your responsibility to maintain weed-free. Failure to maintain may result in fines.
Pet owners are responsible for disposing of their pet's waste, whether the pet is on a leash or in a fenced area. A pet owner who does not properly dispose of his/her pet's waste will be subject to a fine of $25 for each offense plus $5 per day that the violation persists. 4

Bears, coyotes and raccoons - Oh my! by Cathy Hamilton-Wisser, Directorate of Public Works
JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. -- Joint Base Lewis-McChord is home to many native species including coyotes raccoons and black bears. Some wildlife species are potentially dangerous or can cause problems, especially as Washington’s human population expands into traditional habitat. The three top reasons for wildlife conflicts are: trash, bird seed and pet food Family housing residents are encouraged to avoid leaving food - including dirty barbecue grills, trash cans, pet food and bird feeders -- outdoors overnight to discourage bears, raccoons, coyotes and other wildlife from entering housing areas. Do not pet wildlife. A wild animal can inflict serious wounds or cause rabies, so its best to admire from afar. Prevention is the best tool for minimizing conflicts with coyotes and other wildlife. Be sure and feed dogs and cats indoors. Don't leave small children unattended where coyotes are frequently seen or heard. If there are coyote sightings in your area, prepare your children for a possible encounter by explaining the reasons why coyotes live there: habitat, food source and species adaptability. Also talk to kids about what they should do if one approaches them: don't run, be as big, mean and loud as possible. By shouting "go away coyote" when they encounter one, children will inform nearby adults of the coyote's presence. Personnel utilizing wilderness training areas are encouraged to familiarize themselves with black bear behavior and take appropriate precautions. Visit the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife for black bear information and tips: wdfw. wa.gov. Coyotes are curious but timid animals and will generally run away if challenged. Sightings of coyotes are most likely during the hours just after sunset and before sunrise; however, remember that any wild animal will protect itself or its young. Never instigate a close encounter. A raccoon can be a nuisance. Feeding those cute faces can lead to undesirable situations for you, your children, neighbors and pets and the raccoons themselves. If a raccoon ever approaches too closely, make yourself appear larger to scare it off. Do not corner a raccoon, thereby forcing it to defend itself. Black bears are native to wooded areas of western Washington and typically avoid human contact. They can attack defensively if surprised by humans or pets. Bears that seek out human interaction due to accessible food scraps, trash, bird or pet food dispensers are a particular danger. Liberty Gate Construction has changed traffic flow on and off JBLM. It’s in everyone’s best interest to avoid the congested areas as much as possible. But what are the best ways to do that? SGT James Morehouse, 51st ESB, takes GO Transit to get to work and to get on- and off-JBLM.
Navigating traffic is easiest when you use alternate transportation. Whether that means taking public transportation and letting someone else do the driving, or riding a bike and avoiding traffic altogether. Alternate transportation has multiple benefits: One car is removed from the road for every person that gets on GO Transit. In 2017, this popular service provided over 71,000 trips on and off JBLM. This free transit system is available to everyone with authorized access to JBLM. GO Transit even connects with local and regional transit at two off-JBLM locations, City of DuPont and the SR-512 Transit Center. To find the routes and schedules, visit GOLewisMcChord.com and follow the GO Lewis-McChord Facebook page for route updates. Ride a bike instead of driving and get your workout in! There are over 100 GO Bikes that Service members, their dependents (18 year+), DoD employees, and JBLM contract employees can check out. The bikes can be checked out for up to two weeks at a time, and it’s free. These bikes offer a flexible transportation choice that is especially ideal for short distance trips. And with the great summer weather finally here, biking is an easy choice to make. Bike lights, locks, and limited helmets are available for check-out with the bikes.
