October is the month when we raise awareness about breast cancer. The Liberty Military Housing team has shown their support by wearing pink on Wednesdays. Veterans, active-duty service members, and their families must know about this potentially fatal disease. According to studies, 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer. However, the rate is significantly higher among women who have served in the military, with breast cancer rates estimated to be up to 40% higher in female veterans and service members compared to the general population. Additionally, the incidence of breast cancer among active-duty women is seven times higher than the average rate for fifteen other types of cancer. While pink dominates awareness campaigns, it's important to note that breast cancer can also affect men. According to the American Cancer Society, by 2023, approximately 2,800 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in men, and about 530 men will die from it. Male mortality rates are 25% higher than female rates due to the misconception that breast cancer is solely a 'woman's disease.' This leads many men to ignore early symptoms, resulting in later-stage diagnoses and potentially poorer outcomes.
