Think Pink Live Green
Cancer has touched all our lives in one way or another. When the diagnosis comes in, time stands still as a rush of emotions takes over in that moment and everyone realizes life has changed. We all know someone who has experienced this and begins the fight for their life. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month! Breast Cancer remains one of the most common cancers for women and is projected to double globally by 2040. We all need to be aware, make changes to reduce the risk, get involved to support those who are diagnosed, and help find a cure! Studies have shown a direct connection between “living green� and lowering your risk for cancer. Check out the Think Pink, Live Green campaign at breastcancer.org for more information and tips. Live Green: By decreasing poor habits and increasing green habits, studies have shown risk factors are drastically decreased. Think Pink: Get involved and help make a difference! Seasonal Reminders Changing batteries in smoke

All of the homes in Lewis-McChord Communities are equipped with smoke detectors. You will find detectors on every floor of the home and in bedrooms. Some smoke detectors will be battery operated only and some are hard wired directly into the home with a battery back up. You are responsible for maintaining the smoke detectors in good working order. Please test your detectors regularly and change batteries when it is needed. If you are ever concerned or would like to have your smoke or carbon monoxide detectors checked, just simply call in a work order. ** TIP: A good way to remember your detector batteries is to change then every time you set your clock forward or backward in conjunction with Daylight Savings time and Standard time. Upcoming Daylight Savings End Date is November 4th (set your clocks back one hour).
When leaving your home for an extended period of time (more than two (2) weeks), a Vacation and Extended Absence Form must be completed and given to your District Office. This form can be picked up at any of our District Offices. Before you leave your home, we strongly recommend that you: 1. Stop mail and newspaper delivery. 2. Leave pets with friends or at a kennel (pets are not allowed to stay in your home during your absence. ANIMAL CONTROL WILL TAKE PETS LEFT IN HOME DURING YOUR ABSENCE. 3. Unplug all unnecessary appliances such as a TV, coffee maker, or computers. 4. Lock and secure all doors and windows. 5. Turn off water supply line to washing machine. During winter months: Please call our Customer Service line at 253.912.3500 for special “cold weather” instructions to prevent frozen / broken pipes.

Pet Responsibilities
Halloween Decorations must be removed by Nov 10th. Halloween decorations consist of Jack O’ Lanterns (carved pumpkins), skeletons, ghosts, spiders and spider webs, spooky decor, witches, scary cats and all related inflatable characters. Please be aware, we may ask that you remove gruesome and overly scary decorations. There may be Service Members recovering from PTSD in your community. Please keep Halloween fun and safe for the entire community.
Pet droppings are odorous, unsightly, and a nuisance. More importantly, they can be a health hazard, especially for children. Therefore, pets must be kept under control so they do not defecate on parade fields, playgrounds, troop formation areas, sidewalks/walkways, common areas, miniature playgrounds of the housing areas, and neighbors' yards. You will immediately clean up droppings when your pet defecates outside of your residence yard.
Fall seasonal decorations must be removed by Dec 10th. Seasonal decorations (Fall) consist of leaves, scarecrows, gourds, whole un-carved pumpkins, natural wreaths, hay bales, corn stalks, etc.
Pet owners are responsible for disposing of their pet's waste, whether the pet is on a leash or in a fenced area. A pet owner who does not properly dispose of his/her pet's waste will be subject to a fine of $25 for each offense plus $5 per day that the violation persists.
Please note, immediate removal may be required of any decorations, alterations, additional or fixtures which are made or installed without Agent’s prior written consent, The premises will then be restored or repaired solely at the cost of the resident. For more informations regarding holiday / seasonal decorations please contact your District Office.
Droppings in your residence, including your yard, will be removed daily.
With the fall season comes heavy rain, wind and chilly weather. If you have a pet that spends time in the fenced yard, make sure you are taking the best care possible of your four legged family member. * Make sure your pet has shelter from the elements * Make sure your pet has food and water. * Bring your pet in when the weather is extreme. Remember if its too cold for you, its too cold for your pet. Be kind, bring them inside.

TRICK OR TREAT Halloween is an exciting time of year for children. Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) would like to take the opportunity to help you make it as safe as possible. Trick-or-treating will take place in JBLM housing areas October 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. Parents are asked to accompany their young children during trick-ortreating and to use caution when crossing roadways. If you are driving, please be extremely careful on the roadways, especially in housing areas and where children are present. •
Treats: Warn children not to eat any treats before an adult has carefully examined them for evidence of tampering. A good meal prior to parties and trick-or-treating will discourage youngsters from filling up on Halloween treats.

Flame Resistant Costumes: When purchasing a costume, masks, beards, and wigs, look for the label Flame Resistant. Although this label does not mean these items won’t catch fire, it does indicate the items will resist burning and should extinguish quickly once removed from the ignition source.
•
Costume Designs: Purchase or make costumes that are light and bright enough to be clearly visible to motorists. For greater visibility during dusk and darkness, decorate or trim costumes with reflective tape that will glow in the beam of a car’s headlights. Bags or sacks should also be light colored or decorated with reflective tape. To easily see and be seen, children should also carry flashlights or glow sticks. Costumes should be short enough to prevent children from tripping and falling. Children should wear well fitting, sturdy shoes. Mother’s high heels are not a good idea for safe walking. Hats and scarves should be tied securely to prevent them from slipping over children’s eyes. Apply a natural mask of cosmetics rather than have a child wear a loosely fitting mask that might restrict breathing or obscure vision.

Pedestrian Safety: Young children should always be accompanied by an adult or an older, responsible child. All children should WALK, not run from house to house and use the sidewalk if available, rather than walk where ornaments, furniture, or clotheslines present dangers. To keep homes safe for visiting trick-or-treaters, parents should remove from the porch and front yard anything a child could trip over. Wet leaves should be swept from sidewalks and steps. Restrain pets so they do not inadvertently jump on or bite a trick-or-treater.

Choosing Safe Houses: Children should go only to homes where the residents are known and have outside lights on as a sign of welcome. Barracks are not authorized. Children should not enter homes or apartments unless they are accompanied by an adult. People expecting trick-or-treaters should remove anything that could be an obstacle from lawns, steps and porches. Candlelit jack-o’lanterns should be kept away from landings and doorsteps where costumes could brush against the flame.
*** Not all resident homes participate in Trick Or Treat, yet choose to leave their porch light on for safety and visibility purposes. Please visit your District Office for a Trick Or Treaters Welcome door sign. Energy security is key to mission success on Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Wise use of energy extends reach and endurance, reduces sustainment demands, and frees Soldiers and Airmen from support tasks to focus on the primary mission. “Behavioral changes can reduce approximately 16-18% of energy consumption. An the success of any conservation effort depends on team work and gains momentum when leaders are motivated”, says Amin Sakhaway, Energy Program, Directorate of Public Works (DPW) The Directorate of Public Works Energy team conducts energy audits of facilities to identify any issues, then works to develop repair projects that will reduce energy while improving the facility for the occupants. Reduce requirements. Joint Base Lewis-McChord researchers partnered with Belkin International Inc. and energy waste. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory over 12 months to answer the question: Can Belkin identify major loads an assess energy savings remotely? Funding was through a research grant with DoD’s Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP). Two buildings were identified for use in the study; a windowless office that hosts a wide variety of computer equipment, and a recently built barracks. Belkin Echo Technology non-intrusively sub-meters loads inside buildings using a combination of high-sensitivity meter that searches for changes in power use to identify operation of loads. This technology requires collaboration with the power company and an electrician, to set the meter, making it a good fit for government, big companies or university settings. 1

Traffic congestion can be significant on Joint Base Lewis-McChord at key points in the day. By taking advantage of the GO Lewis-McChord programs – GO Transit, GO Bike, and GO Rideshare – you can save time and money and reduce your impact on the environment.
Be efficient with GO Transit
Driving a personal vehicle on base is a popular method of getting around, and finding parking can be a hassle. You may have noticed vans driving around JBLM with GO Transit signs. GO Transit is a free transit system that travels between the main areas around base. The system is available to everyone on JBLM, so consider trying GO Transit on your next trip to the Post Exchange, gym, or DFAC. To use GO Transit, visit www.the GOLewisMcChord.com to find the stop closest to you and view the schedule. Once you arrive at the GO Transit stop, stand within five feet of the stop – you may want to give the driver a little wave, especially in low-visibility situations. When you board, tell the driver what stop you want to go to. If your destination requires a transfer, the driver will communicate with the other vehicles to make sure you easily get onto the next vehicle. In addition to on-base transportation options, GO Transit also connects with off-base locations. Commute Connector in Lakewood provides connections with public transportation to Sea-Tac Airport, Seattle, Lakewood Town Center, Olympia, Lacey, and Tacoma. The GO Transit DuPont stop, located in front of the Best Western Liberty Inn, provides access to restaurants and businesses in downtown DuPont, as well as weekday connections with public transportation to Tacoma and Seattle. GO Bikes offers an alternative mode of transportation that is perfect for getting outside. This free bike share option allows you to get your exercise and travel at the same time.
