For more information call 253.982.3454 PARENT LIFE HACKS 101 TRICKS YOU DIDN’T KNOW COULD MAKE LIFE EASIER Bring on the fall weather. And by Fall weather we mean crisp chilly days, rain, falling leaves, warm sweaters, and boots. Such a beautiful season. What is not beautiful is all of the mud and debris that the kiddos will bring in on their shoes. Here is a great way to combat those unsightly mud trails through your home. And it looks nice too. What you will need: • Tray or a pan. Even a wood box with short sides. • River rocks/decorative rocks. You can find these at the dollar store. • Kids who will actually follow directions. Every time your family walks into the house, have them leave their shoes/boots at the door or entry way. The dirt and debris falls into the rocks. You can hose the rocks out once a week.
Fall Tips and Resident Reminders Extended Leave or Vacation Away From Your Home...
When leaving your home for an extended period of time (more than two (2) weeks), a Vacation and Extended Absences Form must be completed and given to your District Office. This form can be picked up at any of our District Offices.
Before leaving your home, we strongly recommend that you: • Stop mail and newspaper delivery. • Leave pets with friends or at a kennel (pets are not allowed to stay in your home during your absence. ANIMAL CONTROL WILL TAKE PETS LEFT IN HOME DURING YOUR ABSENCE. • Unplug all unnecessary appliances such as a TV, coffee maker, or computer. • Lock and secure all doors and windows. • Turn off water supply line to washing machine. During winter months: Please call our Customer Service line at 253-9123500 for special “cold weather” instructions to prevent frozen / broken pipes.
Holiday decorations are restricted to first story gutters. • Halloween decorations must be removed by Nov 10th Halloween decorations consist of Jack o’ lanterns (carved pumpkins), skeletons, ghosts, spider webs, spooky décor, witches, scary cats and all related type blow up characters. • Fall Seasonal decorations must be removed by Dec 10th Seasonal decorations (Fall) consist of leaves, scarecrows, gourds, whole un-carved pumpkins, natural wreaths, hay bales, corn stalks, etc . Please note, immediate removal may be required of any decorations, alterations, additions or fixtures which are made or installed without Agent’s prior written consent. Recreational Vehicle Pass Policy A recreational vehicle-type is defined as any vehicle that is not designed primarily as a passenger vehicle and includes, but is not limited to the following: motor homes, travel trailers (self-contained and pop-up), 5 th wheel trailers, campers (mounted on trucks and not mounted), motorboats, sailboats, jet skis, ATVs, any type of trailer and boat trailers of any kind. Determination of recreational vehicle violations is at the discretion of Lewis-McChord Communities. Recreational vehicles are not allowed to be stored in the Lewis-McChord family housing areas or anywhere on the premises. Your neighborhood manager may issue a 72 hour pass to allow you to bring such vehicles to your home for packing and cleaning. There will be a limit of two (2) such passes issued per month to each resident.

Pet Responsibilities
•
Any and all pet(s) and animal(s) approved by Lessor must be kept inside the residence at all times except when on a leash or when securely confined in your fenced backyard, provided the fence is approved by management and is of adequate size and strength to restrain the animal. Pets are not to be tied up and left unattended if there is no fence. Pet owners are responsible for disposing of their pet’s waste immediately, whether the pet is on a leash or in a fenced area.
Pets and Fall Weather
With the fall season comes heavy rain, wind and chilly weather. If you have a pet that spends time in the fenced yard, make sure you are taking the best care possible of your four legged family member. • Make sure your pet has shelter from the elements. • Make sure your animal has food and water. • Bring your pet in when the weather is extreme.
Wind and Structure Damage Here in the Northwest, during the fall, winds can be pretty heavy. These Heavy winds can be damaging to doors and screens on the homes. Please be mindful of this when leaving doors open. The wind can rip an open door from it’s hinges causing not only damage to the door but also to the home structure. This can result in a cost to the resident for repairs. So please make sure you are closing your doors and securing them. This applies to out swinging doors.
Reminder... Change The Batteries In Your Smoke Detector All of the homes in Lewis-McChord Communities are equipped with smoke detectors. You will find detectors on every floor of the home and in bedrooms. Some smoke detectors will be battery operated only and some are hard wired directly into the home with a battery back up. You are responsible for maintaining the smoke detectors in good working order. Please test your detectors regularly and change batteries when it is needed. If you are ever concerned or would like to have your smoke or carbon monoxide detectors checked, just simply call in a work order. *** Tip: A good way to remember batteries is to change them every time you set your clock forward or backward in conjunction with Daylight Savings time and Standard time. Upcoming Daylight Savings End Date November 6 (Set your clocks back one hour)
Landscaping and Fall Maintenance
During the fall and winter months our landscaping teams will maintain flowerbeds, yards, rake leaves and clear shrubbery throughout the communities, with the exception of fenced yards. Fenced yards must be maintained by the resident and a yard waste bin will be provided to you at no additional cost. Those without fences who choose to maintain their own yards, can bag leaves and leave them curbside for the landscapers to collect on their rounds. No garbage may be in the bags.
Fallen Trees and or Large Shrub Debris
The fall and winter storms can cause fallen trees and large tree/shrub debris to be scattered throughout the communities. Should you have a fallen tree and or bush in your yard, please submit a work order so that we may have it removed safely.

TRICK OR TREAT Halloween is an exciting time of year for children. Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) would like to take the opportunity to help you make it as safe as possible. Trick-or-treating will take place in JBLM housing areas October 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. Parents are asked to accompany their young children during trick-ortreating and to use caution when crossing roadways. If you are driving, please be extremely careful on the roadways, especially in housing areas and where children are present. •
Treats: Warn children not to eat any treats before an adult has carefully examined them for evidence of tampering. A good meal prior to parties and trick-or-treating will discourage youngsters from filling up on Halloween treats.

Flame Resistant Costumes: When purchasing a costume, masks, beards, and wigs, look for the label Flame Resistant. Although this label does not mean these items won’t catch fire, it does indicate the items will resist burning and should extinguish quickly once removed from the ignition source.

Costume Designs: Purchase or make costumes that are light and bright enough to be clearly visible to motorists. For greater visibility during dusk and darkness, decorate or trim costumes with reflective tape that will glow in the beam of a car’s headlights. Bags or sacks should also be light colored or decorated with reflective tape. To easily see and be seen, children should also carry flashlights or glow sticks. Costumes should be short enough to prevent children from tripping and falling. Children should wear well fitting, sturdy shoes. Mother’s high heels are not a good idea for safe walking. Hats and scarves should be tied securely to prevent them from slipping over children’s eyes. Apply a natural mask of cosmetics rather than have a child wear a loosely fitting mask that might restrict breathing or obscure vision.

Pedestrian Safety: Young children should always be accompanied by an adult or an older, responsible child. All children should WALK, not run from house to house and use the sidewalk if available, rather than walk where ornaments, furniture, or clotheslines present dangers. To keep homes safe for visiting trick-or-treaters, parents should remove from the porch and front yard anything a child could trip over. Wet leaves should be swept from sidewalks and steps. Restrain pets so they do not inadvertently jump on or bite a trick-or-treater.

Choosing Safe Houses: Children should go only to homes where the residents are known and have outside lights on as a sign of welcome. Barracks are not authorized. Children should not enter homes or apartments unless they are accompanied by an adult. People expecting trick-or-treaters should remove anything that could be an obstacle from lawns, steps and porches. Candlelit jack-o’lanterns should be kept away from landings and doorsteps where costumes could brush against the flame.
*** Not all resident homes participate in Trick Or Treat, yet choose to leave their porch light on for safety and visibility purposes. On the reverse side of this information sheet is a door sign for your convenience. Please hang this sign on your door to let resident children know if your home is handing out treats or not participating in the festivities. Thank you. ***
