Welcome Into 2018 From LMC
To all of our Lewis-McChord Communities Residents, welcome to 2018! There will be so much to look forward to this year. We will host a number of events throughout the year that are completely FREE for all of our current residents. The quarterly events you are invited to are our annual Resident BINGO in the springtime, our annual Resident Picnic and National Night Out in the summer, our Back to School and Fall Festival events in the fall and our Holiday Lights competition in the winter. Have you or someone you know created a beautiful home inside and out? We encourage you to participate in the Home Pride program. Visit your District Office to nominated yourself or your friends and neighbors. Our employees are also joining in on the fun, they can nominate too. This program has quarterly winners who are then eligible for our yearly grand prize. Join us for our monthly LMC Spouses Group. These monthly events are for spouses (and sometimes the Service Member) to come together to enjoy crafting, games, snacks and building friendships. All materials are provided and are on a first come basis.

Snow, Ice and Freezing Winter Weather Tips For Your Home:
Holiday Decoration Reminders
• December Holiday decorations must be removed by January 10th December decorations consist of Santa Claus, presents, lights, blow up characters, wreaths with ornaments, stockings, holiday trees etc. • Winter Seasonal decorations must be removed by March 19th Winter decorations consist of snowmen, snowflakes and winter wreaths etc. Please note, immediate removal may be required of any decorations, alterations, additions or fixtures which are made or installed without Agent’s prior written consent.
* Holiday decorations are restricted to first story gutters.
Holiday Garbage Schedule
If your trash day falls on a holiday your collection may be delayed by a business day
Christmas Tree Removal
will be the week of January 9- January 13.
Residents can set Christmas trees out on their regularly scheduled collection day next to their trash tote. Trees must be free of flocking, tinsel, ornaments and metal hangers and cut to 4’ lengths. Should you miss the pick up dates, you can always check with the JBLM recycling center for drop off.

With the changing weather, we could experience extreme temperature drops, snow and ice. When this kind of weather hits the Northwest, there is the possibility of pipes freezing and bursting in your home. You can help to prevent this by taking some simple steps. Disconnect all garden hoses from the exterior faucets. Keep your house temperature set at 55 or higher, even if you’re leaving the house for an extended period of time. Do not turn off the heating system, this can cause significant damage in your home due to broken water pipes. Open cabinet doors below sinks to allow heat from the home to circulate in these enclosed spaces. During extended periods of freezing temperatures set your inside faucets on a low drip to circulate water in the pipes and help prevent the lines from freezing.
Ice and Snow:
With snow and ice accumulations typically spanning short periods of time in the Pacific Northwest your Lewis McChord Communities teams will focus on hills, major roads and major intersections in and out of our communities. Lewis McChord Communities does not shovel or lay down ice/snow melt in walkways or driveways around the homes. During these times we ask you to use caution while moving in and around JBLM and other communities surrounding the installation, including major freeways and roadways. Follow the guidance provided by local officials and be safe when making a decision to travel away from your home. HAVE A SAFE WINTER
Fire Hazard Reminders & Tips Fire Hazard Reminders and Tips:
This time of year there can be many potential fire hazards. From the use of portable heaters to Christmas lights, fire places and misuses of extension cords there are increased risks in this season. Be safe by following all the labeling requirements on these types of appliances and accessories. Another line of defense is your smoke detectors inside the homes. All of the homes in Lewis-McChord Communities are equipped with smoke detectors. You will find detectors on every floor of the home and in bedrooms. Some smoke detectors will be battery operated only and some are hard wired directly into the home with a battery back up. You are responsible for maintaining the smoke detectors in good working order. Please test your detectors regularly and change batteries when it is needed. If you are ever concerned or would like to have your smoke or carbon monoxide detectors checked, just simply call in a work order.
*** Tip: A good way to remember batteries is to change them every time you set your clock forward or backward in conjunction with Daylight Savings time and Standard time.

Sustainability Goals JBLM’s Installation Sustainability Program (ISP) is guided by the following long-term sustainability goals:
Air Quality 1) Reduce installation source and non-tactical motor vehicle air emissions 85% by 2025.
Energy 2) Achieve a secured renewable sourced installation by 2040 (Net
Zero Energy).
Sustainable Community 3) Create sustainable neighborhoods for a livable JBLM community that enhances the Puget Sound Region (Net Zero Land).
Products and Materials 4) Achieve a net-zero waste installation by 2020.
Sustainable Training Lands 5) Maintain the ability of JBLM to meet its current and future military missions without compromising the integrity of natural and cultural resources, both on the installation and regionally (Net zero Land). 6) To assist in the recovery of all listed and candidate federal species in the South Puget Sound Region (Net Zero Land).
Water Resources 7) Achieve a secured net-zero water installation by 2020.

Declutter in the New Year!
By Cathy Hamilton-Wissmer, Directorate of Public Works Sustainability starts at home, and clearing up the clutter is a gift to both yourself and your whole family in the New Year. It’s time to organize and put things away after the holiday bustle and it helps to begin with a plan. No matter the scale of the job, start by sitting down and spending a few minutes creating an action plan. 1. Decide how big the project will be. A job unfinished defeats the whole purpose of cleanup and leaves you frustrated. Consider taking a ‘before” photo of which room you’d like to clear out. Being able to see the tough spots will help you decide what to do first and how to break up the work. 2. Set aside a day or weekend to get the job done. Make sure you have a clear schedule to achieve your goals. Don’t bite off more than you can chew. 3. When going through items ask yourself, “Do I really need or use this”. If the answer is no, then take it to the Thrift store on the installation or utilize the extensive recycling options at the Recycling centers. Check out the ‘Buy Nothing-JBLM’ group on Facebook. This is a great opportunity to meet your neighbors and move some of your stuff along to a new home. 4. Hazardous Household waste can be brought to Building 1210, Environmental Operations on Mon-Thurs 1300-1530 and Fridays 1300-1500. 5. If you have trash that you need to throw out, remember that there are three landfills near JBLM: a. Hidden Valley, 17925 Meridian St E, Puyallup WA 98375, 253-847-7555 b. Tacoma Landfill, 3510 S. Mullen St., Tacoma WA 98409, 253-591-5418 c. Thurston County Waste and Recovery Center. 2418 Hogum Bay Rd NE, Lacey WA 360-867-2491 6. Old couch, mattress or large item to get rid of? Lewis-McChord Communities will assist housing residents with one bulk pick up a year, contact them at 253-912-2150. 7. Once it’s all cleared out, time for a deep clean. If you need help, put the family to work or hire it out. Then put it back together in an organized fashion. Need inspiration? Glance at those before photos and smile at the change you can see. A good reminder, if you don’t need additional storage, don’t add it. It sounds paradoxical but it makes sense, it’s common to fill storage areas with stuff, whether it’s stuff you need or not. That can lead to clutter in the future. No need to add storage units, cabinets or under the bed containers, unless you really cannot live without those items. Challenge yourself to save money and conserve resources in 2018 as you put up your feet and enjoy having a clean, clutter-free home. You are off to a fresh start all year long!
