Lewis-McChord Communities Living Green Tips: Celebrating Earth Living Green With the summer months upon us more and more families are choosing to do staycations. Which means hopping into the family car, hitting the road and seeing the local sites. To make your staycation even more affordable try these earth healthy tips from www.goodhousekeeping.com. 1. Slow down. Driving 10mph above 60 is like adding nearly 50 cents to the price of a gallon of gas, since higher speed equals more guzzling. 2. Get pumped. Once a month check the pressure of each of the tires against the guidelines listed in your car’s manual; add air if needed. Doing this can improve mileage by about 3 percent. 3. Air out. Replace filters regularly. A new oxygen sensor alone can improve mileage by as much as 15 percent.
5 Easy Double-Duty Ideas
For additional tips please visit our Pinterest page.
The goal is "reduce, reuse, recycle." 1. Magazines. Roll up a couple of these and stick one into each of your calf- or knee-high boots so the footwear will keep its shape. 2. Empty paper-towel roll. Flatten, and use it to sheathe a knife kept in a drawer. 3. Small glass food jars. These make perfect see-through storage vessels for nails, screws, nuts, and bolts. 4. Old shower curtain. Stash one in your car's trunk to line it when carting potentially messy paints or picnic and beach gear. 5. Used coffee grounds. Spread them over flower beds of acid-craving plants such as azaleas or rhododendrons. 4

The recycling centers on Joint Base Lewis-McChord have the answer: recycle it! There are two recycle centers, one on Lewis Main and one on McChord Field. Both recycling centers take a variety of things that you need to dispose of prior to moving: those old hard plastic broken toys? Old, rusty BBQ? Unfinished lumber? All recyclable! As well as glass, cardboard, electronics, yard waste, metal, plastic bags, lead acid batteries, toner or ink cartridges. Donate usable items to one of the JBLM Thrift stores and then when you move into your new neighborhood, shop at the local thrift store. Reduce and Reuse!
How often do you ask yourself what's safe to put in your in recycling bin? Next time you go to throw something away, get creative and think of ways to reduce waste in the first place! Only paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, jugs & jars, aluminum & tin cans can go into your recycling bin. Check out the Lewis Main or McChord Field recycling centers for additional recycling options! Yard waste & leaves can be taken to the recycling centers on the installation for disposal.
Do you have cleaning, home improvement, automobile maintenance, lawn and garden care, hobbies, or paint to leave behind? Housing residents can take household hazardous waste to bldg. 1210, Environmental Operations during the hours of 1300-1600 Monday –Thurs and 13001500 Friday. Call 253-967-4786 for more information. They can also answer questions about any hazardous materials that you may have stored. Product labels may include these terms: toxic, ignitable, reactive, or corrosive, caustic, danger, poison, volatile, flammable, warning and caution. Illegal dumping is against regulation on JBLM. The Pride Week clean up this spring resulted in 63 tons of material being removed from all over the installation. “Do the right thing. Throwing stuff away or in the woods is not the best use of that material,” said Tammy Shoop, JBLM Recycling Outreach Coordinator. Recycling on JBLM is a great way to make the most of all that stuff. You bought it with your hard earned cash -- now recycle it and know that the money from your recycling efforts supports Service members through Family, Morale, Welfare & Recreation, Energy Conservation, Safety and Pollution Prevention programs. Questions? Call 253-966-6444 or find Sustainable JBLM on Facebook.

Go Lewis-McChord 3 Tips to Save Big for your Summer Adventures By Meredith Shores, Pierce County Planning & Public Works
As the days get longer and the weather improves, we all have the urge to get outside more! Whether that means hiking, biking, boating, or cruising down the Washington coast, you will be better able to get out there if you have saved money to pay for it. Check out our tips on how to save big just in time for your summer adventures 2018! 1. If you don’t own a car, don’t buy one. If you already own a car, don’t buy another one. According to a 2017 study by the American Auto Association, the average cost of owning and operating a new vehicle in 2017 was $8,469 annually, or $706 each month. Including gas, maintenance and repairs, wear-and-tear, and insurance, that’s a big portion of almost anyone’s paycheck. You could go on a top-notch summer vacation with that amount of money, make a great contribution to your retirement savings, or create a great emergency fund. It helps that getting around JBLM has never been easier with GO Transit and GO Bike. The free GO Transit system on JBLM goes to every DFAC, Gym, PX, and within a quarter mile of almost every unit. The system is available to everyone with authorized access to JBLM. Also, there are seven locations where you can check out a GO Bike for free for up to two weeks at a time. Find all the routes, schedules, and locations on the GO Lewis-McChord website. 2. Save yourself from airport parking costs. Sea-Tac International Airport’s on-site parking prices start at $26 per day ($130 for full week). If you do your research on off-site parking lots with airport shuttles, you will still probably pay between $8 and $20 per day. This often-forgotten additional cost can do some major damage to your vacation budget. If you’re paying for all of block leave that could be $280 (plus gratuity) to keep your car near the airport. To remove this budget item entirely, hop of Sound Transit Route 574. This express bus route makes just a few stops on the way to Sea-Tac International Airport. The route starts at Lakewood Towne Center, with stops at the 512 Park-and-Ride, and the Tacoma Dome Station. With this option you get to the airport for $3.75 per person. During certain weekday hours you can even catch GO Transit out to the 512 Park-and-Ride as the first leg of your trip! 3. Research your regional transit to avoid taxi/Uber/Lyft sticker shock. In the same vein of thought of our second tip, there are plenty of costs you can avoid if you research alternate ways of getting where you want to go locally (and regionally). Look at the service maps for Intercity Transit (Thurston County), Pierce Transit (Pierce County), King County Metro Transit (King County), and Sound Transit (Regional Transit) to see how you can get around. If you need help with transportation planning, explore transit trip planners or send a message to the GO Lewis-McChord Facebook page for assistance. Transit fares are usually between $2 and $4, which is almost always cheaper than calling for a taxi, Uber, or Lyft. By following these tips you’ll be able to save big on your transportation costs. What will you do with your savings?

Sustainable JBLM What do I do with all this packaging material?
By Cathy Hamilton-Wissmer, Directorate of Public Works Many of us are buying more and more products on-line, add that to the moving from one base to another, and the question comes up- what do I do with all of this packaging material? Consider reuse as the first option. Think about ways you can reuse any of the material that came with your recent purchase. Did it come with cornstarch pellets? Kids love to make recycled art with those colored squishy pellets. You can lick & stick them together or put on a piece of construction paper (Valentine’s Day hearts, anyone?). Recycling can be confusing but in essence it is about supply and demand. Technically, almost everything is recyclable. However, it does not mean that there is a manufacturer that wants to buy and make it into something new. For example, the price of oil, which is used to make many different kinds of plastics, is now very low. For that reason the price manufacturers will pay for plastics collected for recycling has also dropped. So there are fewer plastic items being recycled. Deli containers, clamshell-style containers and drink cups go in the trash whereas plastic bottles, yogurt cups, and detergent jugs can go in your recycling cart. Cardboard boxes can be recycled at the Recycling centers on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, or put into your grey housing recycling bin for pickup. Residents can also deposit the boxes & packing material in the conex at the Lewis Main recycle center for reuse. Keep it in mind for your next move! You can always reuse Bubble Wrap. You can save it for the next move, or use a sheet of bubble wrap to fill your hand bags and prevent them from losing shape when you’re not using them. It is an insulating layer when used to wrap around your pots and containers in the garden during cold winters. Ensure that the wrap is a couple of inches above the container lip. This keeps the soil warm when the temperature drops. While Bubble wrap is not recyclable on JBLM, you can always return it directly to Sealed Air. See their website for instructions: https://sealedair.com/product-care/recycling- bubble-wrap-plastic-paper- foam-packaging. Remember there are NO plastic bags, Styrofoam or molded foam in your curbside recycling bin. They are not recyclable on JBLM. Please put in your garbage can. When in doubt, throw it out! JBLM has two recycling centers, one at Lewis, Building 5290, across the street from JBLM Lewis Main Commissary just off 12 th and Nevada and another on McChord, Field Building 516, behind the Exchange and McChord Field Commissary just off South Gate Road. Hours of operation: Tues-Sat 0730-1600. Check out Directorate of Public Works recycling page for information on what can be recycled JBLM: https://www.lewis- mcchord.army.mil/publicworks/sites/services/dumpsters. 8

INFORMATION FROM DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS HYDRANT FLUSHING AND WATERLINE MAINTENANCE Reader boards will be placed in your area at the time of flushing. You may experience discoloration in your water, however it is tested regularly and continues to meet or exceed State and Federal Water Quality Standards. We understand the water is not appealing, but we assure you the water is safe. We apologize for any inconvenience during this process. Remember that flushing is done to maintain long-term water quality, public health and your safety. If you have any con cerns please call DPW Customer Service at 967-3131. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q: WHAT CAUSES DISCOLORED WATER? A: Your discolored water is caused by sediments from the well and accumulate in large distribution pipes over time. The sediment is from small amounts of iron and minerals present in most drinking water. Rapid changes in water pressure or flow loosens iron and mineral deposits from inside the lines. Construction, power outages, pumps in wells turning on and off and opening or closing a fire hydrant or water valves are common causes of stirring up the sediment. Hydrants are commonly opened to flush a water pipe after repair, address a water quality/discoloration problem, or to exercise valves to ensure fire protection. Q: WHY DOES THE WATER SYSTEM NEED TO BE ROUTINELY FLUSHED? A: The water distribution system is a complex network of pipes and storage reservoirs where sediment deposits naturally accumulate over time. If not removed, these materials may cause water quality deterioration, taste and odor problems, or discoloration of the water. Water may also stagnate in less used parts of the distribution system and can result in degraded water quality. Q: WHAT SHOULD I DO AFTER THE FLUSHING? A: If you encounter discolored water, run cold water, allowing new water to work its way into your pipes. If it does not, open all faucets, outdoor hose bibs etc. and run a load of laundry 5/31/2018
with no clothes on the cold setting. In some cases, you may experience slight discoloration for a few hours. This discoloration only affects the appearance of the water; it does not affect safety and usually not the taste. Q: WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY WATER PRESSURE OR VOLUME SEEMS LOW AFTER FLUSHING? A: Check your faucet and washer screens for trapped debris. Q: IS IT OK TO DRINK SEDIMENT-LADEN OR DISCOL ORED WATER DURING TEMPORARY DISTURBANCE? A: It is recommended that water users wait until the water has cleared before using it for potable purposes. Q: WHAT CAN I DO IN PREPARATION TO MAKE LIFE EASIER FOR ME DURING THE FLUSHING PROCESS? A: 1. Fill a couple jugs of drinking water and put them in your refrigerator the day prior. 2. Do all of your laundry the day prior to the flushing. 3. Unhook any charcoal/media filters or any other aftermarket plumbing fixtures you may have hooked up such as automatic coffee makers. 4. Use your toilets sparingly. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact DPW Customer Service at 967-3131.
