All operations are carried out by fire professionals, and weather conditions are closely monitored to ensure that operations can be carried out safely. If smoke is causing you physical discomfort or property damage call: 253-912-2049 to register a nuisance smoke complaint.
It’s always nice to gather around the campfire and on JBLM you are allowed to have 20 a fire pit that is above ground, movable and commercially purchased. Be sure to comply with State and County burn bans, keep your fire pits 15-20’ away from your home and only burn clean dry, wood or presto logs. Remember that no open burning of yard waste or garbage is allowed on JBLM!

Bears, coyotes and raccoons - Oh my! by Cathy Hamilton-Wisser, Directorate of Public Works
JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. -- Joint Base Lewis-McChord is home to many native species including coyotes raccoons and black bears. Some wildlife species are potentially dangerous or can cause problems, especially as Washington’s human population expands into traditional habitat. The three top reasons for wildlife conflicts are: trash, bird seed and pet food Family housing residents are encouraged to avoid leaving food - including dirty barbecue grills, trash cans, pet food and bird feeders -- outdoors overnight to discourage bears, raccoons, coyotes and other wildlife from entering housing areas. Do not pet wildlife. A wild animal can inflict serious wounds or cause rabies, so its best to admire from afar. Prevention is the best tool for minimizing conflicts with coyotes and other wildlife. Be sure and feed dogs and cats indoors. Don't leave small children unattended where coyotes are frequently seen or heard. If there are coyote sightings in your area, prepare your children for a possible encounter by explaining the reasons why coyotes live there: habitat, food source and species adaptability. Also talk to kids about what they should do if one approaches them: don't run, be as big, mean and loud as possible. By shouting "go away coyote" when they encounter one, children will inform nearby adults of the coyote's presence. Personnel utilizing wilderness training areas are encouraged to familiarize themselves with black bear behavior and take appropriate precautions. Visit the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife for black bear information and tips: wdfw. wa.gov. Coyotes are curious but timid animals and will generally run away if challenged. Sightings of coyotes are most likely during the hours just after sunset and before sunrise; however, remember that any wild animal will protect itself or its young. Never instigate a close encounter. A raccoon can be a nuisance. Feeding those cute faces can lead to undesirable situations for you, your children, neighbors and pets and the raccoons themselves. If a raccoon ever approaches too closely, make yourself appear larger to scare it off. Do not corner a raccoon, thereby forcing it to defend itself. Black bears are native to wooded areas of western Washington and typically avoid human contact. They can attack defensively if surprised by humans or pets. Bears that seek out human interaction due to accessible food scraps, trash, bird or pet food dispensers are a particular danger. JBLM News Enter Pacific Pathways Triathlon Compete in JBLM’s Pacific Pathways Triathlon Saturday, Aug. 4 at Shoreline Park, JBLM-Lewis North. The individual or relay team triathlon consists of a 500-meter swim, 14-mile bike race and 5K run. The triathlon starts at 7:30 a.m.; bib pick-up is from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3 and 5-7 a.m. Aug. 4. Awards will be given to the overall male and female, top three male and female in each age group and top three relay teams. Early registration with guaranteed T-shirt size ends Wednesday, July 11 at midnight. All participants registered early receive a T-shirt and race swag (bag, towel and swim cap). Kids bowl free this summer! Bowl Arena Lanes and Sounders Lanes are excited to take part in a summer program, “Kids Bowl Free.” Register your children ages 17 and younger for a free bowling pass (two free games of bowling a day) at either Bowl Arena Lanes or Sounders Lanes Family Fun Center. Celebrate two-day Freedom Fest Celebrate Independence Day both Tuesday, July 3 and Wednesday, July 4 at JBLM’s Freedom Fest! The festivities are at Cowan and Memorial stadiums starting at noon. This year, Tuesday’s open only to JBLM Service members, your Families, military retirees, other valid DOD ID card holders and sponsored guests. Wednesday is open to the general public (and anyone who wants a second day of fun, plus a huge fireworks show at dark). Award-winning country singer-songwriter David Lee Murphy headlines JBLM’s Freedom Fest entertainment July 4. Murphy has collaborated with Kenny Chesney on hit singles and albums and also has written and co-written album cuts for other major country western artists, including Blake Shelton, Reba McEntire, Brad Paisley, Aaron Tippen and Jason Aldean. Freedom Fest offers fair food, the annual Classy Chassis car show starting at noon (Tuesday only), carnival rides, games, stage entertainment, Kids’ World magic, games and stage acts, sponsor booth giveaways, roving entertainers and more. Avoiding Construction Traffic
By Meredith Shores, Pierce County Planning & Public Works Liberty Gate Construction has changed traffic flow on and off JBLM. It’s in everyone’s best interest to avoid the congested areas as much as possible. But what are the best ways to do that? Navigating traffic is easiest when you use alternate transportation. Whether that means taking public transportation and letting someone else do the driving, or riding a bike and avoiding traffic altogether. Alternate transportation has multiple benefits: One car is removed from the road for every person that gets on GO Transit. In 2017, this popular service provided over 71,000 trips on and off JBLM. This free transit system is available to everyone with authorized access to JBLM. GO Transit even connects with local and regional transit at two off-JBLM locations, City of DuPont and the SR-512 Transit Center. To find the routes and schedules, visit GOLewisMcChord.com and follow the GO Lewis-McChord Facebook page for route updates. Ride a bike instead of driving and get your workout in! There are over 100 GO Bikes that Service members, their dependents (18 year+), DoD employees, and JBLM contract employees can check out. The bikes can be checked out for up to two weeks at a time, and it’s free. These bikes offer a flexible transportation choice that is especially ideal for short distance trips. And with the great summer weather finally here, biking is an easy choice to make. Bike lights, locks, and limited helmets are available for check-out with the bikes.
