With the goal of highlighting the sacrifices and resilience of military children, former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger, established April as “Month of the Military Child” in 1986. The strength, adaptability, resourcefulness and perseverance of the military child is inspiring Each year the DOD, national, state, and local government agencies along with schools, military affiliated companies and private companies join together in CELEBRATING our military children, and the importance of the role they play in freedom
From all of us at Liberty Military Housing, we celebrate and say thank you to all our military kids who live in our housing!
A visible way to show support to military youth is to wear purple Purple represents that all branches of the military are supported; Air Force blue, Army green, Navy blue, Marine red, and Coast Guard blue, all collaborate to combine together as a single color, purple “Purple Up!” For Military Kids!
Military Children by the Numbers
There are currently 16 million children of active and reserve duty members worldwide These children face many challenges and unique experiences as a result of their parents’ service
A typical military child can move six to nine times from kindergarten through high school graduation. Military families move on average every two to three years, impacting them through changing school and support networks

April is the Month of the Military Child.
All Liberty Military Housing team members will be wearing purple shirts every Wednesday in April in celebration of the Month of the Military Child. Stop by any of your district office or any of our resident events during the month of April to pick up a Month of the Military Child, Certificate of Recognition.

TAKE THE CHALLENGE - TAKE
CHARGE APRIL 25 - MAY 4, 2026
Liberty Military Housing and the Take the Challenge Now Foundation have partnered for the second annual Take the ChallengeTake Charge, a ten-day screen-free challenge. This challenge reinforces the benefits of reducing or eliminating screen time and promotes healthy ways to connect with family and the community.
Research shows that a person’s mental and physical health suffers the more time they spend consuming media on digital devices. Reducing or eliminating screen time improves sleep quality, productivity, and mood
Throughout the challenge, individuals and families are encouraged to replace
screens with daily activities, including reading, physical activity, and community engagement
Liberty team members will also take a break from screens outside regular business hours, and we encourage those in and around our communities to join the challenge, too Liberty Military Housing values family togetherness and is committed to improving the health and well-being of our residents by continuing to provide resources such as Take the Challenge - Take Charge to strengthen the bonds within our military families

Exploring JBLM’s Natural Spaces

Joint Base Lewis McChord is home to several environmentally significant natural areas that provide both recreation and important wildlife habitat Two notable sites are Morey Pond and Prairie Oak Preserve, each offering unique opportunities to experience the region’s natural landscape.
Morey Pond
Morey Pond is a small recreational and wildlife area located on McChord Field near Holiday Park. The pond was created in the 1970s when a small dam was constructed on Morey Creek to form a fishing pond for military personnel and their families. In the late 2000s, habitat restoration efforts added a fish bypass channel, restoring access to several miles of upstream spawning habitat while maintaining the pond as a recreational site.
Today, Morey Pond serves as a quiet natural area for fishing and birdwatching The pond includes a gazebo with a bird-watching blind, allowing visitors to observe local birds and wetland wildlife It functions as both a recreational amenity and a small ecological refuge, providing a place for base residents to fish, walk, picnic, and enjoy nature The Directorate of Public Works (DPW) Environmental Outreach team, in coordination with JBLM Fish and Wildlife, hosts volunteer events at Morey Pond to remove invasive plants and litter
Prairie Oak Preserve
Another significant natural area on JBLM is the Prairie Oak Preserve near Evergreen Elementary. This site protects a portion of the South Puget Sound glacial outwash prairie ecosystem, one of the rarest habitat types in the Pacific Northwest. These prairies formed thousands of years ago when retreating glaciers left behind deep gravelly soils that support grasses and wildflowers rather than forests.
Today, JBLM protects some of the largest remaining prairie fragments in the region, providing important habitat for rare plants, pollinators, and wildlife such as the threatened Mazama pocket gopher. Because much of western Washington’s prairie has been lost to development and forest growth, these protected areas play a vital role in conserving this unique landscape
The DPW Environmental Outreach team, in coordination with JBLM Fish and Wildlife, also hosts volunteer events at Prairie Oak Preserve to remove invasive plants and reseed native plants

The Garrison Command team is looking for spouses or military residents of these neighborhoods that would like to serve their community as a mayor.
The mayors act as a voice for the residents and engage on a monthly basis with the Garrison CSM and Liberty Military Hosing (LMH). On a quarterly basis LMH will sponsor a luncheon for the mayors to listen and resolve resident concerns
