MUSIC & CREATIVE ARTS
SHERBORNE ABBEY FESTIVAL In May, Schola Cantorum and our ensembles performed at the Sherborne Abbey Festival. The Sherborne Abbey Festival is an annual, week-long celebration of music, with events held in a variety of locations in and around the town, including the Abbey and even here at Leweston. Once again, thank you to the Director of Music, Dr Milestone and the rest of the Music Department for helping to organise the event and supporting our students who have been rehearsing since Christmas!
SUMMER MUSIC CONCERT Towards the end of term, we welcomed residents from the Trinity Manor Care Home Barchester Healthcare in Sherborne, to our Summer Concert. Our students thoroughly enjoyed performing for a new audience. The Music Department recently donated a piano to Trinity Manor, in hope that a passion for music will be rekindled. From September, musicians from Leweston will regularly go down to the care home to entertain the residents and build friendships.

WINDSOCK MAKING IN YEAR 7 Year 7 created windsocks using heat transfer dyes to create designs on ripstop nylon. They tested their creations out on the grounds.
YEAR 10 ART & DESIGN TRIP Year 10 Art and Design students started the Summer Term with a trip to Cornwall to explore their creativity and get inspired by beautiful artwork by Kurt Jackson.
EXPERIMENTING WITH METALS 3D Design students have been experimenting with metals using hand tools, the roller and guillotine, as well as the spot welder, to make samples inspired by their designer research and source photography.

ART & DESIGN EXHIBITION We welcomed the school community to view the work of our talented artists at the Art and Design Exhibition on Friday 17 June. The opportunity to exhibit works from GCSE Fine Art through to A Level Textiles and Photography is an important experience for all involved. The pieces received huge appreciation from students, OAs and staff alike. Guests were captivated by the outstanding work which is a testament to the wealth of art and design talent in the school. The exhibition showcased works in a variety of media including drawing, painting, textiles, collage, photography and 3D model making. We hope that the exhibition has inspired our pupils and our artists should feel extremely proud of their achievements and the high standard of work they have produced!

GB LASER RUN TEAM SELECTED FOR EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS At the National Laser Run in Edinburgh, Leweston had five athletes who were selected to compete for the GB Laser Run team at the European Championships. Well done to Izzy, Year 8, Reuben, Year 9, Katrina, Prep 6, Charlie, Year 7, and Archie, Year 11.
SILVER AT MADEIRA BIATHLE & LASER RUN Congratulations to Matthew, Year 11, who finished a fantastic fifth in the U17 Biathle and Izzy, Year 8, who came second in the U15 Laser Run in Madeira!
NORTH DORSET CHAMPIONS Well done to all three of our Year 7 and 8 athletics teams who competed at the North Dorset Championships in Yeovil. All won their team competitions to become the Area Champions!

U13 SAILING TEAM TAKE PART IN REGATTA Our U13 Sailing Team enjoyed taking part in the Millfield Prep Schools' Regatta, held at the Andrew Simpson Foundation at Portland. Eighteen boats were involved and our sailors had a fantastic day, competing in a variety of events.
SECOND AT ESAA TRACK AND FIELD Congratulations to our Junior Girls team who came second at the ESAA Track and Field School's Cup Regional Final in Exeter.
WLSS AWARD WON AT IAPS CLAY PIGEON SHOOTING Congratulations to Charlie, Alfie, and Rupert, Year 7, who represented Leweston at the IAPS Clay Pigeon Shooting Championships. In the WLSS competition for smaller teams, the boys were placed third and were presented with Bronze medals. In other news, Charlie has recently been selected for the British Shooting Pathway programme, where he will be coached by the British team coaches!

SPORTS DAY On Thursday 16 June, the Senior School enjoyed their annual Sports Day in beautiful weather. The morning saw the field events including shot, discus, javelin, long jump and high jump with the afternoon moving to the track. Well done to everyone who took part and huge congratulations to the overall winning House, Campion! Well done to a number of pupils who broke existing Sports Day records! FLORA COMPLETES FIRST 'BE CC12* ODE' EVENT Congratulations to Flora, Year 11, and her lovely grey Westcombe William (AKA Billy) who completed their first BE CCI2* ODE event at Cirencester Park. Flora had to gain special a dispensation from British Eventing officials to compete at this level as she is not sixteen until August, and this was by far the most testing of competition yet for this partnership.
SECOND AT INTER-SCHOOL SHOW JUMPING Well done to Flora, Year 11, May, Year 9, Henrietta, Year 8 and Molly, Year 10 who all rode brilliantly on Saturday 14 May to take second place in the Inter-Schools Show Jumping at the very special Platinum Jubilee Royal Windsor Horse Show. Thank you to our Equestrian Team Manager, Lorraine Roberts and all the families and friends who work so hard behind the scenes to make this possible.

'TEAM NATIONAL TITLE’ FOR THIRD YEAR RUNNING With eight team events and nine riders competing for individual honours, the equestrian team had a very busy three days at the All England Jumping Course, Hickstead for the NSEA Eventers Challenge (arena eventing) and National County Dressage and Show jumping Championships during half-term. These National Championships are the always competitive and only qualified teams and Individuals can compete. We are thrilled to have won a Team National Title for the third year running and to take so many top eight placings, it really was our very best results at Hickstead.

LIFE IN BOARDING
BISCUIT MAKING Boarders helped Miss Wallace and Miss Ashford make ‘ANZAC’ biscuits. Miss Ashford provided the following explanation of what these are: "Aussies and New Zealanders make ANZAC biscuits every year to commemorate ANZAC DAY (Australia and New Zealand Army Corps) on 25 April." Our boarders also enjoyed an evening of fun and games in the joint common room led by our boarding and GAP assistants.
TRIP TO THE ROMAN BATHS Our boarders thoroughly enjoyed their trip the Roman Baths this term. Everyone returned to the boarding houses with huge smiles on their faces!
READY 2 CLIMB The boarders visited Ready2Climb, an independent indoor climbing centre in Yeovil where many faced their fears. It was great to see their confidence grow over course of the session and the boarders pushed themselves to try all the different levels at the centre.
ARCHERY The boarders tried their hand at some Archery in the walled garden curtesy of Yeo Bowmen. Congratulations to Karolina's team who won!

END OF TERM EXTRAVAGANZA WEEKEND The boarders went out with a bang on the last weekend of this academic year! The fun started on Friday evening when they battled each other on various inflatables and challenged themselves to stay on the rodeo horse. The students were up early on Saturday to travel to the beautiful New Forest for some canoeing on the Beaulieu river. After a peaceful paddle the air was filled with laughter as the boarders played games on the water. Staff and students showed their competitive side and much fun was had by all. On Sunday the boarders enjoyed a traditional English afternoon tea and lawn games in the sunshine. The pupils spent many hours chatting, playing games and reminiscing on the past year with Housestaff. It was a lovely end to what has been another fantastic year in boarding!

LEWESTON BOARDERS GO UNDERGROUND! A group of brave Leweston boarders headed to the Mendip Hills for an underground adventure! After getting suited up in helmets, headlamps, wellies and caving suits, these intrepid explorers climbed up the steep side of Burrington Combe to the dark entrance of Goatchurch Cavern. Our pupils all managed the descent to the middle layer of the cave with some even reaching the lowest point 55 metres below the entrance. We are incredibly proud of their determination and courage, for pushing beyond their comfort zone and achieving something remarkable.

YEAR 9 PHYSICS PROJECT This term Physics teacher, Mr Nejako, set his Year 9 students a research project. It could be anything they wanted, as long as it related to the subject and presented in any manner the pupils wished. Amelia created a spectacular 3D piece about space and the planets. Imogen composed a fantastic video about 'Time'.
STEM CREST AWARDS In the culmination of twelve weeks of hard work researching, experimenting and writing up their own scientific projects, the Year 9 STEM CREST award pupils showcased their projects to the school community in a scientific poster exhibition in the theatre. Projects the students chose to research included: the effect of acid rain on plant growth, making roller coasters go faster by increasing velocity and the identification of the best surfaces to reveal fingerprints. Huge congratulations to all of the CREST pupils for their outstanding projects and for some interesting discussions on the STEM areas that interest them most.

LETTERS FROM THE HOUSE OF COMMONS & DAVID ATTENBOROUGH After studying a range of global Issues in Geography during the spring term Year 7 pupils wrote to people of importance. Many wrote to the Prime Minster, David Attenborough, local MP Chris Loder or big companies such as McDonald’s and Coca-Cola on issues close to their hearts. The pupils were delighted to have several replies detailing the action that is being taken to help resolve these long-term issues.
SKERN LODGE RESIDENTIAL Year 12 Geographers travelled to Appledore and Skern Lodge for their residential trip completing three days of data collection, analysis and general fieldwork skills in preparation for their NEA (Non Examined Assessment).
YEAR 7 HOME ECONOMICS As part of their Home Economics assessment, students in Year 7 enjoyed a picnic in the sunshine, with food ranging from pasta salads, cupcakes to biscuits and burgers. Well done to all our aspiring young chefs!

YEAR 10 GEORGRAPHY TRIP TO ISLE OF PURBECK Year 10 Geographers undertook the second of their compulsory fieldwork days visiting the Isle of Purbeck. The day began with an overview of the geology and the formation of headlands and bays from Peveril Point, including practising their field sketching. The pupils then worked in groups to measure beach profiles and undertake sediment analysis along Swanage beach, considering the role of groynes on longshore drift. The pupils worked hard, the sun shone and the field work helped increase understanding of the processes and landforms they had been studying in the classroom.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH TRAINING Well done to the Bronze and Silver teams who took part in their expeditions this term. We are all proud of the effort and commitment that the pupils have shown and they should be very proud of their accomplishments. Ms Haynes would like to thank all the Leweston staff for their support and for giving up their time over the weekends to ensure our DofE groups completed their expeditions safely. Congratulations to the pupils who have completed their training and who received their awards on Speech Day!
CARS, CREDIT CARS & COOKING! As part of the Sixth Form Enrichment programme, students were given a series of talks with helpful advice for the future, on the topics of 'cars, credit cards and cooking'. This included: a personal finance talk with Mrs Crabb, the school accountant, a lesson on car maintenance with Estates, and a lesson with Miss Hobson on how to budget when leaving home. The students learnt about banks and credit scores, ensuring brake fluid and tyre pressure are regularly checked, as well as controlling money when it comes to purchasing luxuries and necessities.

GOOD LUCK TO YEAR 11 We held a final assembly for Year 11 on Friday 6 May where pupils watched video filled with memories of their time at Leweston and they were presented with good luck bags that contained a bamboo pencil, a fully recyclable pen, some paper clips to help them keep it together, smarties because they are all smarter than they realise and star mix as they have all been the brightest of stars as a year group. They also received a special message from Head of Year 11, Mrs Lilly, and good luck messages from Years 7, 8 and 9 and other members of staff. We look forward to seeing many of them return to Leweston Sixth Form and to the small number moving on to new ventures we wish them all the best for the future.

PREFECT TEAM 2022/23 We’re delighted to announce our 2022/23 Prefect Team. The prefects act as ambassadors for the school and taking on extra responsibilities is an opportunity for students to develop leadership skills and play a part in areas of school life where they think they can make a difference. THE ANCHOR & THE BUZZARD We are very excited to announce the opening of the "Anchor & Buzzard", an occasional evening venue where Sixth Formers can come together toenjoy good music, refreshments and each other’s company. Once a term, our lovely Cedars café, will transform. With a ticket, students will receive a meal and can choose from an alcoholic beverage or non-alcoholic alternative, as well as buy any of the other drinks and snacks regularly served in the café. The launch was a great success with Head Prefect, Florence and Deputy Prefect, Caitlin, unveiling the beautifully engraved sign. There was much laughter, great music, a guest appearance by Arthur the spaniel, and even some cartwheeling in the garden!

PENALTY SHOOTOUT FOR UKRAINE Luigi, Charlie, Finley, Charlie and Nico, Year 7, organised a penalty shoot out for the Ukraine Refugee fund. It was fantastic to see some of our teachers getting involved! Thank you to the pupils for organising the event and everyone who donated to this important cause.
JUBILEE PICNIC & TREE PLANTING On Thursday 26 May, Leweston celebrated the Queen's 70th Jubilee with a 'Jubilee Picnic' which the whole school was invited to enjoy lunch outside. Thank you to our catering department, Chartwells Independent, for putting on such a fantastic spread for us all to enjoy as a community. We have also planted seven apple trees down the Nun's walk, in celebratory of her Majesty's Jubilee!
DRAGON BOAT RACE On Sunday 29 May, Leweston had two teams enter the annual Dragon Boat race at Sherborne Castle Country Fair. As usual, the school chooses a charity to raise money for, and this year JDRF UK, a Type 1 diabetes charity was chosen. Well done to the Red Team for finishing fourth and to both teams for fundraising over £1,000.

MARIAN DEVOTION Earlier this year, Pope Francis invited bishops, priests and the faithful to come together in their churches to bless the people of Ukraine and Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. In our Marian Devotion, the school came together to share prayers, readings and music as part of our Liturgy. We decorated a cross with flowers to remind us of the sadness of Christ’s crucifixion and the joy of the resurrection.

END OF TERM ACTIVITIES SPEECH DAY
Senior School Speech Day took place on Friday 1 July, and it was wonderful to see the event return to its pre-Covid programme. Like many others, it was Mr Paget-Tomlinson's first whole school 'in-person' Speech Day! We were delighted to welcome guest speaker, writer and award winning journalist, OA Charlotte Edwards, who reminisced about her time at Leweston and how it developed the resilience she needed to get to where she is today. Many congratulations to all our prize winners. The Italian Garden and Manor House were transformed for our Upper Sixth Leaver's ball in the evening. We wish you all the best in your next adventure!

END OF TERM ACTIVITIES ACTIVITIES WEEK
We hosted a jam-packed Activities Week at the end of the Term. Students splashed around at Dorset Water Park, made sandcastles at Weymouth Beach, took a cultural trip to London, participated in water sports at Portland, explored the New Forest Wildlife Park and Halden Forest for some mountain biking and even braved the rides at Paulton's Park! This was a fun-filled, memorable week which showcased our students determination and inquisitiveness, not to mention their ability to thrive even when out of their comfort zones.
