Latchezar Boyadjiev and Lucy Lyon Personal Reflections Richly glowing color characterizes Personal Reflections, a visual dialogue between new bodies of work by glass artists Lucy Lyon and Latchezar Boyadjiev. Through their handling of light, color, and dimension in glass, the artists both recall the human figure, but in languages that span the representational and the abstract, the personal and the interpersonal. Lucy Lyon’s cast-glass subjects capture nuances of the human form with subtlety, a strong narrative impulse, and undeniable pathos. While glass sculpture can often be symbolist or formalist, Lyon’s usage of the figure willfully rejects this distance. In sublime color choices and graceful, understated forms, her work is infused with a powerful sense of empathy as she explores themes of interaction and individuality. These exquisitely wrought figures encourage private reflection and introspection. “Lyon has mastered her technique,” glass critic Leanne Goebel writes, “[she] presents compelling narratives about the human condition—the interaction and/or lack thereof among humans pressed together in urban settings, poignantly explored through the simple communication of evocative body movements.” Each piece contains an atmosphere open to personal interpretation and suggestive of a narrative or story— settings Lyon describes as “places where one can be in a private space while in public.” The glass forms of Latchezar Boyadjiev are a balance between the tangible and the intangible. They evoke the sensual undulations of the female figure from allusions to abstracted form rather than literal depiction. The use of fluid planes of color marked by slight shifts in depth and tone provide a sculptural aesthetic that distinguishes Boyadjiev’s glowing shapes. As art critic James Yood writes, “His forms take on rich volumetric shape, never literally echoing the

shapes of the body, but amplifying or deleting them in what all together becomes a kind of three-dimensional caress.” Working monochromatically, he uses light and rich color to describe the sweeping contours of the glass as it reflects and refracts through luminous golden yellows, icy blues, and woozy magentas. Boyadjiev’s glass forms are, above all, unmistakably contemporary; at the same time deeply poetic and technically formalist. “I want my work to become a part of modern architecture and a contemporary environment,” he says; “to reflect the era in which we live.” Lucy Lyon graduated in 1971 from Antioch College and studied at the renowned Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, Washington. She has studied across the country at workshops taught by well-known glass artists and has cited Edward Hopper as a source of inspiration throughout her career. Her works have been exhibited in significant public institutions including the Redding Museum of Art and History in Long Beach, CA; the Albuquerque Museum in Albuquerque, NM; and the New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe, NM. Latchezar Boyadjiev was born and raised in Sofia, Bulgaria, where he attended the Ceramics Department of the Academy of Applied Arts. In 1985 he was admitted to the prestigious Academy of Applied Arts in Prague and studied under renowned glass sculptor Stanislav Libensky. After graduating from the Academy, Boyadjiev defected to the United States and settled in California. His art resides in numerous public and private collections spanning six continents, including the White House Collection, the Glassmuseum der Ernsting Stiftung in Germany, and the Naples Museum of Art in Florida.
