n the exhibition recently held at the Guggenheim Museum of New York, “Countryside. The Future” (on until August 14, 2020), Rem Koolhaas argues for «an urgent exploration of a long-neglected realm and its sublime beauty». Following his extraordinary statements in favour of large cities, about the retroactive avant-garde of the Manhattan of skyscrapers, density as a resource, etc., the great master points at countryside as the last resource for humankind’s fate. Actually, being complementary to life in geographical-dimension cities, countryside is bound to be a protagonist in the near future also as landscape (see Metamorfosi n. 02, September 2017), a research subject, a ground for development, a reference for planning. «The rural, remote, and wild territories collectively identified as “countryside” – argues Koolhaas – make up for 98% of the Earth’s surface not occupied by cities: the transformation of the countryside also occurs due to changes resulting from migrations (think of how immigrants repopulated some dying hamlets), technologies, demographic oscillations, climate». This monographic issue of “Metamorfosi” devoted to Sacred Paths, embraces countryside, forests, woods and hilly landscapes, in synch with the great argument illustrated by Koolhaas, therefore as a part, albeit a small one, of the rural issue. It is interesting because one of the aspects of the transformation of countryside represented by ways, paths, established traces is the object of reorganizations with recent architectural designs. di riorganizzazioni con recenti progetti di architettura.

The linguistic declinations of chapels, mosques, shelters point to exemplary episodes. Architecture divests itself of haughtiness and magnificence, and expresses simplicity and essentiality. Estrangement is a recurring phenomenon and relies on a contemporary lexicon through perceptive techniques aimed at meditation and the enigmatic relationship with the sacred realm. At a reduced scale, these designs encapsulate and redevelop the patterns that marked the history of religious architectures. For example, the pattern of luminous stained glass windows is treated with a contemporary sensibility, and the repertoires of the relationship with landscape are similarly revisited. The combinations of geometric elements and landscape evoke solutions that, introduced in places separated from the “rites and times of cities”, emerge in the countryside like installations. These small architectures are disseminated along nature trails, in turn defined “by sparse architectural signs”, for example between two walls, or by light cuts in a closed “room”, as symbols

PERCORSI DEL SACRO. PICCOLE ARCHITETTURE SPIRITUALI NELLA NATURA SACRED PATHWAYS. SMALL SPIRITUAL ARCHITECTURES IN NATURE di / by GUENDALINA SALIMEI

Altre volte esprimono una riflessione conoscitiva «sul rapporto tra spazio interno e paesaggio naturale, stabilendo una dialettica continua tra spazio religioso e paesaggio all’interno di un contesto di nuda bellezza»3. ontemporary architecture is a field of formal and semantic experiments in which man’s eternal questioning about his role between the divine and creation finds fertile ground for the search for symbols and conformations capable of supporting infinite intuitions. The common thread proposed for the issue of Metamorfosi devoted to the theme of Paths of the sacred relates to the study of small, spiritual architectures inserted in nature, marked by travelling on trails and routes in strong contact/relation with the natural landscapes. Travelling on a route is also a process of gradual advancement and transformation, in the figurative sense of mentally probing, of following thoughts, associations of ideas, and recollections – all in the etymological sense of “running through” that the Italian title word for “pathway”1. The occasions are many and are of the most varied kind, as are their places and reasons for existing. These architectures range from being spaces of devotion to becoming places of meditation, or simply elements that, joined together in a system, represent a trail of devotion that is an act of faith and expression, part of the ancient pilgrimage routes or more; at other times, they are spontaneous shrines, like small votive chapels, like care centres, or like simple elements of relationship between man and nature «in which the etymological duality of the term “sacred” is expressed both as separation from the world and as union with the divine and its creation»2. At other times, they are small architectures that are a cognitive reflection on the «relationship between interior space and natural landscape, that establish a continuous dialectic between spiritual space and space within

a context of naked beauty»3. They are almost all “small architectures”, often open and with a strong constructive, visual, and perceptive relationship with nature itself, as well as a relationship with the surrounding landscape. To describe this plurality of elements, the decision was made to thematize and thus to make clearer how these architectures were chosen, collected, and described. The identified themes can be comprised in a few words: trails, landmark, fence, shed, cavern and lastly diaphragm. Trails collects those architectures marked by being part of a larger path in which the individual parts have a relationship with one another of some kind, giving rise to a widespread system designed as a journey in stages; the keyword landmark identifies these architectures’ ability to become visual reference points, the potential physical goals to achieve on a territory, or the mental goals of a thematic concept (for example, the cure for cancer, etc.), or even simply symbolic elements. The terms fence, shed, and cavern, on the other hand, recount these architectures’ ability to become original archetypes4 endowed with an interesting, GUENDALINA SALIMEI

contemporary reinterpretation. Lastly, the issue of the diaphragm brings together a group of objects/chapels that are actually artistic installations and, as such, have a characteristic of being abstract, almost ephemeral, timeless architectures. Around the theme that collects and describes the trails, the idea of the path and of the recounted story prevails, and becomes the framework of reasoning. They are diffuse systems in which architectures, open and disseminated, together form specific stories. For example, the Ruta del Peregrino, one of Central America’s oldest pilgrimage trails, saw complete reorganization in 2008. In fact, the need to allow a broader usership to complete the pilgrimage safely made it indispensable to provide, along SACRED PATHWAYS. SMALL SPIRITUAL ARCHITECTURES IN NATURE

R

uta del Peregrino is one of the oldest pilgrimage trails in Mexico and in all of Central America; winding for about 117 km and stretching from Ameca, near Guadalajara, to Talpa de Allende, the place where, for about 200 years, pilgrims have been paying homage to the Virgin of the Rosary. This devotional journey is undertaken every year, particularly during Holy Week, and is considered by the faithful as an act of faith and atonement. The difficulties of the trail are considerable, due to the rough conditions and the virtually total lack of hospitality facilities. For these reasons, in 2008 Emilio González Márquez, the Governor of Jalisco, promoted the trail’s overall restructruing, entrusting the project to the Mexicans Tatiana Bilbao and Derek Dellekamp. The designers’ intent was to “open” the Ruta to broader usership, also allowing non-believers to make this journey that holds such great importance in Mexican tradition. Bilbao and Dellekamp tasked a team of international designers with conceiving small architectural elements disseminated along the Ruta, from the service areas by Godoylab to the Luis Aldrete refuges, located in Estanzuela and Atenguillo. Bilbao and Dellekamp’s La Capilla abierta La Gratitud is located in Lagunillas, the first stage on the trail, and consists of four white monoliths, of different heights, facing one another. In terms of layout, the elements are arranged to form an open-air, cornerless “room”, in turn delimited by a quadrangular podium consisting of stone containment walls. The slope of one of these walls invites the faithful to enter into an open but architecturally defined space. The place is therefore conceived using very few architectural signs, including two small, white walls where pilgrims can leave their vows in writing Near Estanzuela is the Sanctuary by Ai Weiwei and FAKE Design: a profound mark on the territory, through which the Chinese artist imposes a spirituality linked to natural sensation, establishing a relationship of empathy with the surroundings. The project consists of a cavea traversed by a cut that, in its length, becomes a “pulpit” on the natural landscape. The shape of the amphitheatre is limited by the crossing of a pedestrian path, treated in terms of materials in a manner similar to the containment wall, which then constitutes the holy space proper. Seen from above, the intersection between the path PILGRIM’S ROUTE

Round about the cave grew a luxuriant wood, alder and poplar and sweet-smelling cypress, wherein birds long of wing were wont to nest, owls and falcons and sea-crows with chattering tongues, who ply their business on the sea. And right there about the hollow cave ran trailing a garden vine, in pride of its prime, richly laden with clusters. [70] And fountains four in a row were flowing with bright water hard by one another, turned one this way, one that. And round about soft meadows of violets and parsley were blooming. There even an immortal, who chanced to come, might gaze and marvel, and delight his soul; The Odyssey, Book V, verses 83-99

In 2018, the Holy See took part in the 16th International Architecture Exhibition at the Biennale di Venezia with a compound pavilion, consisting of 10 small works of sacred architecture designed by 10 different professional studios1, the Vatican chapels, built in the wooded area in the island of San Giorgio Maggiore. The general design and curatorship were entrusted to Francesco dal Co and Micol Forti, while Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, as head of the Pontifical Council for Culture, is to be credited with his strong will to fully realize (in the meaning of the term that the root “res” implies) that rapprochement between art and faith so desired by popes since Vatican II. The initial suggestion was traced to the Skogskapellet, the “woodland chapel” that Erik Gunnar Asplund designed upon winning, in collaboration with Sugurd Lewerentz, the competition to enlarge Stockholm’s woodland cemetery in 1915. Cappella 0 – called Padiglione Asplund – designed by Francesco Magnani and Traudy Plezel to exhibit his original drawings and a reconstructive model made specially for this purpose, is dedicated to Asplund’s woodland chapel.

and a chapel building lies in their formal and functional dimensions. The latter dimension, when not incorporated into or flanked by the former, has its own object identity and can take on different names linked to the uses and dedications characterizing it: Palatine, funerary, devotional, serial2. Unfettered by the necessities of the canonical liturgy, the chapel also loses the formal constraints derived from it, opening to an imagery of possible spaces that make it a divertissement of design within the Episcopal bottlenecks and indications3. In this sense, the ten architects were able to sidestep imposed models by freely choosing the formal archetype – the cabin (Terunobu Fujimori), the tent (Norman Foster), the totem (Francesco Cellini, Carla Juaçaba, Sean Godsell), the enclosure (Eduardo Souto de Moura, Smiljan Radic, Javier Corvalán), and the cave (Andrew Berman, Eva Prats, and Ricardo Flores) – or the settlement principle (transversal crossing, superficial arrangement, directional orientation, isolation) to which to refer for a material and conceptual

interpretation of spirituality. There was no indication as to the materials to be used: from natural to synthetic, from massive to impalpable, from traditional to technological, each architect was able to articulate his or her relationship with the type and place in accordance with the procedure of oxymoron, of mimesis, of opposition. The only inescapable demand – but one that, in being realized, also proved to be interpretable – was the presence of the ambo and the altar, to mark the microarchitectures not only as places of silence, meditation, and introspection, but precisely as sacred places. The use of icons was also made optional, favouring the employment of more or less explicit symbologies (cross and circle, but also light and shadow). The ten chapels disseminated in the wooded area of the island of San Giorgio are not linked by an established path, and may be united in infinite combinations, tracing infinite constellations.
