talian school heritage is very diverse and consists of buildings that vary in terms of age, type, and state of repair. Many schools are still housed in complexes of historical and/or architectural value, which have been adapted over time for educational purposes to meet increased demand, but are completely unrelated to any pedagogical orientation or teaching method. There is an increasingly urgent need to develop a comprehensive intervention strategy which, with a view to sustainability, identifies methods of intervention that respond to the changes underway. More than the new, it is the existing; more than construction, it is transformation that dictates the issues on which to act in order to adapt our schools, which are increasingly out of step with contemporary needs. In Italy, the most recent interventions have been driven by regulatory rather than pedagogical or didactic needs, and even less by architectural ones. Seismic safety, fire regulations, and energy efficiency have absorbed what little resources there are, which, far from being integrated into the system, have distorted the character of buildings of great interest. In redevelopment processes, it is essential to shift the focus from regulatory and technological aspects to design aspects and to engage in an increasingly close dialogue with the evolution of educational models, transforming the redevelopment and expansion of teaching spaces into an opportunity for the introduction of modern teaching and learning methodologies. The gradual abandonment of the frontal approach to teaching has called into question SCHOOLS: RENEW THE EXISTING

SCUOLE: RINNOVARE L’ESISTENTE

the hierarchy and progression of spaces: the distributive sequence (classrooms+laboratories+common areas-services) and the temporal sequence (activities that precede and activities that follow) are increasingly being replaced by a global and open concept of learning, in an educational perspective in which “learning takes place everywhere” through the sensory dimension of knowledge. The school is structured as a learning landscape, where the entire space is livable and structured for learning, without any division between traditional teaching areas, spaces for use, and service areas. The environments become configurable and adaptable to the teaching and organizational needs of a constantly changing organism: movable walls define the space of the classrooms and, when necessary, configure larger environments; the connective space expands to become a multifunctional system divided into areas for study, meetings, group activities, and recreation; the multifunctional spaces of schools are highly flexible in use to allow them to be used by a wider range of users. The ultimate goal is the complete redevelopment of the building—understood as a spatial and technological system—in relation to the social and educational role it is called upon to play in the urban environment. Ongoing experiments indicate that it is above all abroad that we must look to identify the design methods that can guide the transformation and innovation of educational structures, transforming schools into urban “attractions”. All over the world, educational facilities are tending to take on greater social significance: teaching spaces and collective and extracurricular facilities are increasingly being used by the community in a process of progressive reappropriation that involves large sections of the population in a process of lifelong learning. Schools are being transformed into civic centers, places of continuous learning, flexible, permeable, and accessible structures where the community can meet and develop a strong sense of belonging. This requires new and increasingly high-performance support spaces.

he simplest way to adapt a school complex to new educational and functional requirements is to add one or more volumes, completely independent from the existing ones, albeit in close proximity. This type of intervention, which does not interfere with the structure and functioning of the existing building, involves fewer problems than other methods of expansion. While the solution of separate school buildings forces students and teachers to move around constantly, it can be useful, especially if the expansion involves, as is increasingly the case, scientific and/or artistic laboratories, or spaces for collective and complementary activities: in these cases, in fact, the location of the extension separate from the school can facilitate its collective use, both during school hours and in the evenings and on holidays. Similar interventions are common in comprehensive schools or Anglo-Saxonstyle campuses, where buildings for schools of different types and levels are located in a single area: in such situations, the construction of a new independent volume, necessary to meet new educational needs, is in continuity with the settlement system that regulates the entire complex. However, the autonomy of the new intervention does not exempt from seeking a way to link the adaptation to the existing structure, making it appear as part of a coherent set of forms: the common thread that ties the different buildings together can be the system of external paths, or the use of the same materials reinterpreted in the light of new construction technology, or even the ADDITION

L’impianto 24

rafting new volumes onto existing ones, taking advantage of blind walls or available open spaces, is one of the most common ways to expand a school complex. This operation can also have a significant impact on the morphology of the building, as the original typological layout can be reinforced, radically modified or, in some cases, presented in new ways of use while retaining its basic configuration. One of the most successful educational policies is the one launched in 2007 by Portugal with the aim of renovating the obsolete stock of lower and upper secondary schools. To manage the design and implementation of the interventions, the public company Parque Escolar was set up, hence the name of the program, which has renovated around 300 schools over a period of 10 years. Its role was to meet the needs of local communities while ensuring constant, centralized public control: a model that proved effective in preventing resources from being used to finance urgent but nonstructural interventions, investing instead in the implementation of a substantial change of direction. One of the first results was the renovation of the Fonseca Benevides Secondary School in Lisbon by Gonçalo Byrne. Built in 1945 to house the D. João de Castro High School, the original building consisted of a single three-story block composed of five modular volumes connected to form a “U” shape: the south-facing classrooms enjoyed views of the Tagus River, while the corridors and art rooms were located on the north side. The symmetrical layout was typical of the period, GRAFTING

with the exception of the position of the gym, which, instead of being aligned with the entrance hall, was located at the end of one of the two side wings. The expansion of the school reflected a pedagogical and cultural strategy developed by a pool of experts under the aegis of the Ministry of Education in response to new demands from the world of work. In 2005, after sixty years of activity, the institute had in fact recorded a sharp decline in enrollment, prompting the Ministry to adopt a different approach, focusing on sectors considered strategic for the social and economic growth of the nation, such as electronics, chemistry and information technology. The restructuring involves two institutes: the Fonseca Benevides Higher Technical

existing one and places the new functions— auditorium, library, canteen, teachers’ area— at the four corners, connected by a path that runs through the interstitial spaces. The project gives the school greater visibility by proposing a triangular entrance plaza, bordered on two sides by the new gatehouse, administration, and auditorium buildings, while one of the old pavilions remains on the third side. The intervention radically transforms the relationship between the exterior and interior, connecting all the pavilions with a highly articulated distribution system along which, at various levels, there are study and rest areas, a cafeteria, the student association headquarters, a print shop, and a minimarket. The idea of the classroom as an exclusive place of learning is replaced by the role assumed by the distribution spaces: the corridors are enriched with niches and corners furnished with seating, turning them into meeting places, areas for exhibitions and debates, and study and/or relaxation zones. The project incorporates all the elements that characterize contemporary Portuguese MAURIZIO PETRANGELI

Inside, the exposed concrete of the structure alternates with plastered surfaces and large glass walls, which mitigate the perception of being in an underground space and facilitate understanding of the school’s layout. The façades opening onto the courtyards feature large glass panels alternating with colored steel panels in gradations of color, covered with expanded metal that also forms the wall of the fire escape stairs and the parapet of the green roof. In the patio that illuminates the entrance hall, the stepped wooden flooring echoes the layout of the adjacent auditorium, visible through a fullheight glass wall, creating visual continuity between the interior and exterior. Between the other two patios is a conference room, connected by stairs and elevator to the underground parking lot and also accessible from the street, so that it can be freely used outside school hours. A similar design approach that integrates and blends architecture and landscape characterizes the extension of the Gammel Hellerup Gymnasium in Copenhagen. The school is located in an elegant residential neighborhood and consists of an original core dating back to the 1950s, to which several buildings have been added over time, arranged around a rectangular courtyard used by students as a recreation area. The extension project consists of a new multipurpose hall, which can be used for sports and events related to school activities, and a new block of classrooms for teaching art subjects. The intervention towards the cloister, on the other hand, has a greater visual impact: the arches on the ground floor are closed with glass windows to create the school’s entrance hall, while the south wing is raised with the addition of a glass “box” that houses the library and, on the upper level, the concert hall. The entirely glazed superstructure introduces a complex play of reflections and references into the composition: the historic part is mirrored on the diaphanous surface of the extension, giving the illusion of a continuity that has now been lost, while at dusk the interior lighting transforms the new volume into a “magic box” that reveals the activities taking place inside. Una scuola per un futuro migliore: la lezione solidale di Francis Kéré a Gando A School for a Better Future: Francis Kéré’s Lesson in Solidarity at Gando

CATASTROFI DISASTER OTHERWHERE di / by

Andrea Valeriani

Over the course of his more than twentyyear career, Diébédo Francis Kéré has carved out a distinctive role within the international architectural discourse, positioning himself along the margins rather than at the center of the field. Born in 1965 in Gando, a small village in Burkina Faso, he later trained in Germany, acquiring a professional formation that embodies a constant negotiation between two worlds: on the one hand, the condition of extreme poverty and infrastructural deficiency of his homeland; on the other, the intellectual vibrancy and technological Northern European avant-garde. This dual perspective informs a design ethos grounded in three interrelated principles: social responsibility, the judicious use of local resources, and formal experimentation as a response to the challenges of climate change. Kéré’s architectural practice oscillates between vernacular rootedness and contemporary innovation. He revisits traditional African building types and techniques—earthen construction, communal cooperation, and manual craft (upon moving to Berlin in the late 1980s, he initially supported himself as a bricklayer, an experience that significantly shaped his architectural sensibility). His academic training would lead him to investigate low-tech devices—minimal yet effective strategies that transform humble materials into sophisticated construction systems. His work is not strictly “emergency architecture”; rather, it establishes a model that reinstates both formal dignity and functional resilience within marginal contexts. It is thus unsurprising that a school became his first realized building (2001), and in his native Gando no less, given Kéré’s ANDREA VALERIANI
