Searching for Hassan, a documentary by Édouard Beau.
The 43rd Rencontres d’Arles is open to the general public. Sixty exhibitions take place in the exceptional setting of Arles, with its cityscape ranging from 12th century churches to modern industrial buildings. Spectacles make use of the city’s theatricality to talk about photography in a way done nowhere else. Most of the programme has never been presented before; the Rencontres d’Arles’ productions later travel to other major international institutions. The exhibitions’ individual designs result from the close collaboration between scenographers and the exhibiting artists and curators from various institutions. The Rencontres fulfils its role of promoting photographers and photographic creation in an educational and festive way thanks, in particular, to the high density of events taking place in and around Arles during the summer. The opening week welcomes all the photographers and programme curators, and is a time for debates, symposiums, book signings and exhibition visits that are free and open to everyone. It is an occasion for informal encounters with professionals from around the world. The Rencontres d’Arles is a non-profit organisation whose budget consists of 46% state funding, 18% sponsorship and 36% ticket sales, income from workshops and retail. All events are simultaneous translated from French to English to the other language.

What impact do these schools’ approach to teaching photography have on their students’ work? After graduating, is an enduring community of points of view perpetuated? Does creation then fit a model? How do the graduate artists develop professionally?
During the opening week, Photo Folio Review & Gallery allows participating photographers to present their portfolios to, and receive assessments from leading photography experts. Open to all photographers, whatever their approach or mode of image production and treatment. Participants must register beforehand.

PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS The exchange between renowned photography professionals and practitioners, be they novice or experienced, has been a permanent feature of the Rencontres d’Arles since the beginning. Throughout the year, over a weekend or a week, workshops allow enthusiasts to develop a personal creative approach while extending their knowledge about the aesthetic, ethical and technological issues of photography. Workshops are open to everyone and meet continuing education requirements (DIF). With, among others Paolo Roversi, Vincent Fournier, Christopher Morris, Darcy Padilla, Klavdij Sluban, Jean-Christophe Béchet, Claudine Doury, Éric Bouvet… And a special focus on Magnum Photos.

Christian Milovanoff, photographer and tutor at the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie d’Arles since its inception, has played a major role in all the classes that have graduated during the school’s 30 years. Every evening at the Théâtre Antique, he will give a performance about different photographic genres – the portrait, classification, memory, words; four stories that so preoccupy photographers.

For nine years, Back to School with Images has continued to develop and steadily increase its educational proposals as part of a project that is unique in France. The Rencontres d’Arles offers 350 different school classes, from kindergarten to Masters level (10.000 students of 8 academies), the opportunity of spending a full day of discovering photography in all its forms, along with the richness of Arles’ cultural heritage, during exhibition visits. A range of fifteen different activities enables teachers to devise their own multidisciplinary, interactive programmes, with backup from professional liaison staff. Thus students can in turn engage with reading images, attend screenings, encounters, hands-on workshops and more. Back to School with Images invites students to shape their own opinions about the images they are surrounded with on a daily basis, while developing their curiosity and critical faculties.
