You will see floods around the world; ride a train through Russia’s immense landscapes; pick up pieces of Lenin in Ukraine; think about Monsanto; and follow a gypsy family’s life over a 20-year period. From the local to the global, the 48th festival will take you to the Columbian stage, immerse you in Spain’s new generation, and introduce you to Iranian photography—a journey to the heart of a complex, changing world.

Gnomes, ogres, Lilliputians, real or fake Pygmies: a collection of vernacular images of the rare, exceptional and bizarre.

The more we think countries are closed, in deep political or economic crises, the more photographers are there. They reveal, tell, testify, invent, repair, rebuild with their own language, that of the image. They decode the warning signs of societies in the throes of change. The 48th Rencontres de la Photographie shares that love of other places. A walk through Arles—a city of living heritage that, during the summer, multiplies into astonishing venues for our shows— will take you from Latin America to Iran, the Bosphorus to the Syrian border, the Château d’Avignon to gypsy caravans.
