Each year, nearly 10,000 schoolchildren from different school districts participate in Back to School in Images, a free event that encourages them to form an opinion on the images they see every day and helps them develop their critical thinking skills. The Louis Vuitton City Guide stops in Arles and, in partnership with the Rencontres d’A rles, offers a new collector’s edition about the city and the festival. A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE Photographers and passionate amateurs at all levels share their viewpoints and improve their skills under the guidance of recognized professionals. Participants in this intensive, friendly, immersive course alternate shooting with selecting to create a personal series.
AN EXCEPTIONAL PLACE AND SETTING The courses take place at the Maison des Arènes, a former 18th-century mansion in the heart of Arles near the city’s most important heritage sites. Computers, lighting equipment and studios are provided.
ALL YEAR About 50 courses are held for a weekend from February to October and for 4 to 5 days from April to September. Three-month remote-learning courses take place from November to January and March to May.

Ten weeks to complete a personal project: a special time to receive precise, constructive feedback as close as possible to your expectations and needs. They honor three categories of books published during the year: the Author’s Book Award, Historical Book Award and Photo‑Text Award. Each is endowed with €6,000. THE LUMA RENCONTRES DUMMY BOOK AWARD Since 2015, the Rencontres d’A rles has awarded a €25,000 production budget to assist in publishing a dummy book. It is open to any emerging photographer or artist using photography who proposes a dummy book that has never been published. Special attention is given to experimental and innovative editorial forms. All the exhibition venues are eligible for the Louis Roederer Discovery Award. Through their pioneering work, galleries, art centers, community spaces, independent venues and institutions are often the first to support emerging artists. During opening week, a jury gives the Louis Roederer Discovery Award to an artist and the structure behind his or her project with an acquisition worth €15,000, and the public confers the Public Award with an acquisition worth €5,000. While still dedicated to emerging artists, experimentation and images, the new program opens up to the visual arts and offers a grant to an artist-curator team as well as a research and production budget for the works.

The Jimei x Arles International Photo Festival was founded in 2015 in the Jimei district near Xiamen, southern China. Since then, it has hosted over 200 shows from China and the rest of Asia. The festival was cofounded by Sam Stourdzé (director of the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici and former director of the Rencontres d’A rles) and Chinese photographer RongRong (cofounder of the Three Shadows Photography Art Center, China’s first photography center). Each year, Jimei × Arles brings a selection of Rencontres d’A rles exhibitions to China and produces over 20 shows of Chinese and Asian photographers. Cited as an example of French-Chinese cultural cooperation, the festival aims to assert its role as a photography platform in Asia. It has created its own Discovery Award, presented each year in Arles, and the first award for woman photographers in China. The Curatorial Award for Photography and the Moving Image was created in 2021.

Highlighting the vibrancy of French-Indian cultural relations and regional cooperation, the Serendipity Arts Festival and the Rencontres d’A rles award a grant for photography, video and new media, an initiative supported by the Institut français in India. The INR 1,200,000 (about €15,000) grant gives artists from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka an opportunity to develop an exhibition project and present it at the Rencontres d’A rles.

In September, the Rencontres d’A rles offers about 10 schools and 20 classes in the Aix‑Marseille and Nice school districts an image awareness-raising program in connection with the festival’s offerings and the artistic and cultural education courses. It helps almost 300 students expand their creativity and knowledge of photography. Photographers help them design and print their work.
The Rencontres d’A rles invites cultural, educational and social players as well as anyone interested in visual education to three days of conferences and experience-sharing.
THE BOOK AWARDS
Pernod Ricard, world’s second largest wine and spirits company, is continuing its support for creativity by giving birth to a new artistic mentorship program, Pernod Ricard Arts Mentorship, which aim is to promote dialogue between artists from different cultures and generations, in collaboration with the Rencontres d’A rles.
A main partner of the 2022 Book Awards and Arles Book Fair, the Fondation Jan Michalski pour l’Écriture et la Littérature, located in Montricher, Switzerland, is dedicated to fostering creative writing by supporting players in the world of writing and developing a taste for reading in the general public.
Since 2017, Lët’z Arles is bringing a bit of Luxembourgish creation to the Rencontres d’A rles. As an association that supports and promotes photography and artists linked to Luxembourg, Lët’z Arles introduce you this year to a pioneer of Luxembourgish photography, Romain Urhausen, through the exhibition Romain Urhausen, in his time at the Espace Van Gogh.
As a patron of the Rencontres d’A rles, the Louis Roederer Foundation provides support for contemporary art and reveals new talents through the Louis Roederer Discovery Award, which will be given out at the Théâtre Antique on Friday, July 8.
