Saying that this will be a summer of revelations is almost stating the obvious. How can we be made to see what is staring us in the face but takes so long to appear, as if the revelation could only be a forced birth? Artists, especially photographers, are there to remind us what we do not want to see or hear. Every summer, the Rencontres d’Arles shakes up the way we look at things from one continent to another. They remind us of our absolute need to exist.

BETTINA. A POEM OF PERPETUAL RENEWAL The first solo exhibition for this American conceptual artist features protean works with transcendental, almost shamanic dimensions.

The Rencontres d’A rles brings together the Louis Roederer Discovery Award with galleries, art centers, associations, independent venues, and institutions. This year guest curator is Taous Dahmani. Her selection is not focused on a particular theme or sole genre, but on the photographers’ attitudes toward image creation, taking a “pre-photographic” viewpoint on what drives or gives rise to a project. Here, all the artists start out from the intimate.
