Thoughts on the Salute to Israel Parade

“Mayor Mamdani welcomes 50,000 rabid zionists with open arms and shouts of ‘Salaam aleikum’ at the Israel Day Parade!” is a headline you will never read

Instead, in the largest Jewish city in the world, hizzonor tells the Jews to drop dead. Well, not the Jews exactly Just, you know, the wrong Jews

And in this, he is actually doing us “wrong Jews” a favor.

For the longest time certainly for most of my adult life solidarity with the Jewish people was a big whoop. On this side of the Atlantic, we “owned” Hank Greenberg and Sandy Koufax, Bess Myerson and Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Barbra Streisand. On the other side of the Atlantic, in Israel, we “owned” Golda Meir, Moshe Dayan, Yitzchak Rabin, the dreamers at the kotel, Teddy Kollek, Ofra Haza, Jaffa oranges, and every kind of high tech imaginable (and some not even imaginable).

And, of course, drip irrigation and the grape tomato

So marching in the Israel Day Parade was a hoot. The world was on our side. And this was especially clear when you walked by the protesters, a motley collection of a few dozen Ultra-Orthodox blackhats from Satmar and Neturei Karta claiming to be the only “real” Jews (as opposed to the 50,000 “fake” Jews marching by them); as well as the upper West Side keffiyah crowd who, fresh from their campaign against Jar Jar Binks, were working on identifying the river and sea they were all chanting about.

That was then. This is now, when marauding thugs from the Ku Klux Keffiyehklan are attacking Jews in the street, declaring subway cars to be “Zionist free zones,” longingly evoking Hitler’s name, informing us, with no sense of irony, that they are “Progressives for Hamas” and declaring, with absolutely no shame, that they want Oct. 7 to be declared a national holiday.

All of which makes the Israel Day Parade more, not less, important It can be compared to the First Amendment protecting freedom of speech. You don’t need the Amendment to protect speech everybody likes. You need it to protect the speech almost no one likes. So, too, we don’t need the parade when everybody loves the Jews. We need the parade when the whole world, it seems, would like to dance and spit on our graves (unless, of course, we become the “right” Jews who abandon our identity, our brothers and sisters in Israel, and the ancestral dreams and hopes of millennia.)

When times are good, the parade is just a glorious celebration In these times, it is an act of defiance. It is a declaration that we will not run, we will not hide, we will not compromise our values, we will not abandon our national family, and we will not pander to gain the approval of those who have already abandoned us, whether out of ignorance, confusion, or malice.

Following Menachem Begin, the parade confirms that we “are not Jews of trembling knees.” We are Jews who walk upright, with pride in who we are, with confidence for the future, and with zero tolerance for those who slander or threaten us

We are Jews who will remind the world that when the going gets tough, the tough get meshugah.

Dear Friend,

For two decades we have been partners in a holy endeavor, the spiritual leadership of Congregation B’nai Tikvah. What a long strange trip it has been, filled with passion and perplexities, proudly raising our families to maturity, loving Israel and our congregation.

Our “work” at B’nai Tikvah will surely define our lives and this work gave us purpose and a platform to make the world a better place. I’m so grateful that I had the opportunity to create melodies where there were none and to have had the freedom to express my love for G-d, the Jewish People and Israel - thanks to our dynamic partnership at B’nai Tikvah.

What we do as clergy and you as a rabbi in particular is at times counter intuitive. We are asked to make judgments, sometimes controversial and unpopular while exuding compassion and love for those in disagreement. It is a miracle and excellent navigation that has allowed us to remain as a clergy team for so long. There were certainly times that we did not agree on issues but we always worked to understand our different perspectives. As our rabbi, my rabbi, I always appreciated and was honored to spar with you about issues of Torah and the world - you are vastly more knowledgeable than I am in regards to Torah and I am grateful that you shared your perspectives with me. I have gained volumes of nuanced perspectives for which I will always be appreciative. Our world view is not all that different, well a little, I recognize that I am at times a little overly optimistic; that’s how I survive this crazy and complicated world.

We have enjoyed each other’s company for countless hours, I’ve listened to your sermons and you to my praying-we’ve always supported the other’s growth and complexities. Our personal conversations during car rides and in the office were always filled with hope and wonder, never with divisiveness or without nuance. We always respected one another’s “left handed” perspective - something else we have in common. I believe our worlds are better thanks to our relationship.

Now as you move down the road, as I’ve told you, you will be a breath of fresh air to your new community. It is my prayer that their good fortune will be yours as well. Your new congregation will benefit from your academic knowledge, love of Torah, compassion, your deepening spirituality, character, story telling, and your sense of humor and love of the Grateful Dead.

Life at B’nai Tikvah will be different without you here, your presence will always be felt and your influence will be a guiding light. As we learn from our ancestors "It is not your duty to finish the work, but neither are you at liberty to neglect it." I’m sure you’ll never neglect an opportunity to share your vast passion and knowledge with the world - just keep on truckin’.

Reflecting on a Year of Learning

As another wonderful year in our Religious School comes to a close, preparations are already underway for the year ahead. Yet, at the time of writing this article, our teachers and students are still hard at work preparing for our final day of school celebration

One of the highlights of these preparations has been watching our students create thoughtful and creative posters reflecting what they learned and what resonated most with them throughout the year Their projects beautifully showcase the breadth of learning that has taken place in our classrooms, including tzedakah, Torah stories, Israel, Jewish holidays, Hebrew, prayer, and so much more.

In addition, our students have been enthusiastically practicing the songs they learned during music with me and prayers they learned during tefillah with Cantor Rockman, which they will proudly share during our closing program. Seeing their confidence and joy as they sing and pray together is a meaningful reminder of the strong Jewish foundation they are building.

As Director of the Religious School, there is nothing more rewarding than witnessing the tremendous growth of our students; not only in their knowledge, but also in their connection to Jewish life and community. It is my hope that the experiences, lessons, and memories they have gained this year will remain with them and continue to inspire their Jewish journeys throughout their lives

This growth would not be possible without the extraordinary dedication of our faculty. Our teachers generously devote their Sunday mornings, and for some, Wednesday afternoons after a full day of work, to nurturing and guiding our students. Their passion, warmth, and commitment are at the heart of everything we do, and I am deeply grateful for the care they bring to our school community each week. I would also like to recognize Cantor Rockman, whose leadership and thoughtful guidance during tefillah has been an integral part of our students’ learning experience.

Lastly, I would like to extend a sincere thank you to Mike Atzbi, VP of School and Youth, for his ongoing support, dedication, and commitment to the vision and mission of our school.

This has truly been a meaningful and successful school year, and I feel incredibly fortunate to work alongside such a devoted team whose love of Judaism and dedication to our children shines through in all that they do.

Thank you to our students, families, teachers, and clergy for making this school year so special Together, we continue to build a vibrant and caring Jewish community, and I look forward to all that the coming year will bring.

Men’s Club Upcoming Calendar

Sunday Morning, June 7th

Come join Men’s Club as we work together as a CBT community on revitalizing the Holocaust Garden located next to the library. The Garden was the original creation of Matthew Katz in 2006 as his Eagle Scout project. Many from CBT and BSA Troop 10 assisted in its original creation. The Holocaust Museum in DC donated two Belgian blocks excavated from the streets of the Warsaw Ghetto as its centerpiece.

Mitzvah Day, Sunday morning, May 3rd

Thank you to Laura Waksman for organizing Mitzvah Day. Additionally, many thanks to the many Men’s Club members who volunteered and supported the event

Indoor Go-Karting at SUPERCHARGED (5/13)

A great time was had by all. We had 16 from CBT attend. Many “Mordechai Andretti” drivers from the FJMC racing team. Some of the highlights were:

1) Howard Manson besting all on his first heat winning with a time of (63.283) beating Robbie Aufseeser and Josh Oliver.

2) Robbie Aufseeser (59 371 seconds) dueling Josh Oliver (59 789) in a classic showdown in their second heat with overall best times. Howard Manson placing third (61.112)

3) Steve Katz winning his first heat (60 505) and placing second in his second heat (61.245)

Honorable mention to Steve Simon and Ben Gottesman for top 5 finishes. After racing we all relaxed and kibbitzed in our private party room enjoying Giddy’s pizza.

Social Action

On April 28 , Chaverim were treated to a presentation and slide show, “The Olympic Experience” by Steve Katz Steve and Andrea went to the winter Olympics in Milan, where they joined their daughter Melissa, who is the manager of communications for USA Hockey. Thanks to Steve for a thoroughly enjoyable time. th

Mitzvah Day on May 3 was a day of unity and spreading light to CBT and the greater community. Members of all ages showed up to sort CBT Religious School books, cook for Elijah’s Promise, write cheerful cards to seniors, and decorate and fill kids snack bags for the Franklin Township Food Bank, among other projects. We collected eyeglasses for The Lion’s Club, produce for JFS Food Pantry, and career clothing for Hire Attire in New Brunswick.

Very special thanks go to Josh, Felice and Joe Ciccione, Andrea Katz, Steve Katz, and Dot Cohen for being exceptionally supportive. Thanks to Sisterhood and Men’s Club, Larry Cohen, and Bill Greenberg for lessening my load and saying yes when asked.

We collect nonperishable food for the JFS Kosher Food Pantry year-round. Please place your (unexpired) food in the wicker trunk down the hall from the office.
