Your LOVE, this Christmas

Your

Jaya works for a producer group in Bangladesh. She makes strings of angels out of Parthi grass. When we visited with her recently, she was busy putting beads onto the angels to form their heads. She can make approximately 15 angels in one day. Jaya and her coworkers also make baskets, coasters, hats, and other Christmas decorations.

Jaya has been working with this producer group for the past 25 years. After her husband died, she had to take on all the responsibility for the family’s finances. Thanks to the training and income from this work, she was able to become financially independent! Jaya enjoys her work and all the friendships she has made there.

Jaya plans to work until her now 20-year-old son gets married. Then she will stop working and live with him and her future daughter, as is customary. She wants to spend lots of time with her future grandchildren!

When you buy gifts for your friends and family through this catalogue you are supporting artisans like Jaya in Bangladesh, and others around the world, to earn a dignified living and support their families!

Every 2 minutes a new case of Leprosy is diagnosed. You can cure one today!
NEW Save $8!

We met Chandra Maya at Anandaban Hospital in Nepal. She had the first signs of leprosy at 7 years old. That was over 50 years ago now! Although she is now finally cured, she is still living with the damage leprosy can do.

Chandra Maya’s first visit to the hospital was when she was in her late teens. After 6 months of treatment, she went home to her village to look after her mother and stopped taking her medicine. It was almost two years until she returned – this time for an 18-month stay.

Once cured, Chandra Maya went home again, but could not find work. So, she moved to a government-run ashram in Kathmandu (where she still lives). When Chandra Maya visited the hospital again for treatment of her ulcers and wounds, the doctors were shocked at the condition of her hands and feet. She would require amputation if she didn’t get more treatment.

When leprosy attacks the nerves, hands, and feet can become numb. Simple daily tasks can be dangerous. Like collecting water, working in the fields, or even just running after your toddler. You may not feel the injury, but horrific ulcers can develop. They can easily get infected. This can lead to irreversible damage requiring amputation.

The major problem was Chandra Maya couldn’t feel all the damage she was doing to her hands and feet while she was in service at the ashram – cooking, cleaning etc. Her fingers became increasingly damaged, and she finally required her leg to be amputated.

Thanks to supporters like you, Chandra Maya has had the surgery and was also able to receive a prosthetic leg.

Leprosy patients, like Chandra Maya are also taught self-care and prevention strategies. They learn how to avoid future injury and alternative ways of doing daily tasks safely.

Chandra Maya told us she was keen to return to the ashram to be with her husband (who she met there. He is also affected by leprosy). Her daughter also lives there with them. But she must stay for at least 2 months to heal properly and learn the skills she needs to adapt to her ‘new normal’ life.

Thank you to all of you who sent in messages of encouragement for people affected by leprosy with your order last year.

Messages like Karen’s: “I pray that you receive joy and comfort from these shoes. I will always pray for you, for healing and safety.”

It’s people like you, that give leprosy patients, like Chandra Maya the assistive devices they need. They access items like protective shoes at The Leprosy Mission Hospitals across the world.

Often made to fit an individual, shoes protect their feet to their own personal needs. Patients learn how to wear them. They may need new protective shoes every 6 to 12 months.

Your loving support makes all this happen. Not only in India, but in Nigeria, Nepal, Indonesia, and Timor-Leste.

LATEST TECHNOLOGY!

Custom 3D-printed orthotics and sandals are now being used in India to protect patient’s feet in comfort and help them stay mobile!

It only costs $15 to buy Protective Shoes this Christmas – but the healing and joy you bring is priceless!

To give protective shoes, use the order form on the centre pages of the Catalogue. Your gift towards shoes is tax-deductible. (Product ID - 11915 - Christmas Shoes.]

Your messages of encouragement bring comfort and joy throughout the year! Thank you.

22 Your kindness gives hope, healing and dignity to someone with leprosy!

Lalsari’s Story

Lalsari and her son Bishal have spent many long stays at The Leprosy Mission’s Anandaban Hospital in Nepal. Although they are cured of leprosy now, their initial Multi-Drug Therapy was required for 24 months!

That’s double the usual 12 months of daily medicine it takes to be considered cured of leprosy in most cases. Their leprosy bacterial count was still way too high after one year, so they had to stay on it much longer. They feel so blessed that people like you have been supporting them throughout their extended treatment. Their family could have never afforded this on their own.

Thankfully, through The Leprosy Mission community outreach program, Lalsari (and her husband) were able to work at a nearby paper factory in Kathmandu throughout her treatment.

“I enjoy working here. Now I feel a sense of belonging. I have a place to stay and work,” Lalsari says gratefully.

Sadly, both Lalsari and Bishal, now cured of leprosy, have been suffering from Leprosy Reaction (an immune system response to

When your gift is worth much more the paper it’s wrapped in…

leprosy bacteria) and have had to keep coming back to the hospital for further treatment. This has meant taking them both away from their family again.

But Lalsari is hopeful, “I have not lost hope. As long as there is life, there is hope - I can do something to earn a living and take care of my children. I can be happy again,” Bishal’s mother Lalsari says.

On my last trip to Nepal, I visited the paper factory to check it out in person and put in my orders. The handmade Christmas Gift paper is in this catalogue! I met Lalsari and she showed me how she makes it. You can buy some today!

Your love and compassion also meant Bishal has received a Gift of Love Educational scholarship. He is now back at school and enjoys learning with his friends. “I love English and Mathematics class. I want to be a doctor when I grow up so I can help other people affected by leprosy,” said Bishal.

When asked what she’d like supporters to know, Lalsari declared. “I give thanks to God. I would like to say thank you …Thank you so much for caring about me and my family.”

When you add a Gift of Love Cure Package donation to your order, you are helping one person like Lalsari (or Bishal) to be cured of leprosy (hopefully in only 12 months!) and are providing them with opportunities for education or employment. Thank you!

YOU can give families affected by leprosy

this Christmas

Many people are surprised that leprosy still exists. Over 50% of the world’s leprosy cases are in India – where Pillala and her grandson, Babloo, live. You can bring them JOY this Christmas.

Pillala was in her 20s when she first noticed the signs of leprosy. At first, there was just a patch on her thigh. There was no pain or itching, so she ignored it. What she didn’t know was that her nerves had already lost sensation. As it spread, she became more concerned. She tried Ayurvedic medicine on her skin. Her husband tried to get her help at different hospitals. They spent a lot of money but had no success. And all this time, leprosy was spreading through her body…

Pillala finally went to a Leprosy Mission hospital and was diagnosed correctly. She was able to get MultiDrug Therapy (MDT) to cure her. Sadly though, she was suffering from malnutrition and had developed leprosy reaction by then. She had severe ulcers on her hands and feet.

Pillala also needed reconstructive surgery. She was able to access these crucial surgeries through two Leprosy Mission hospitals in India. This has helped

her regain some use of her hands and feet, but her ulcers have persisted. She still struggles with everyday tasks like cooking for herself. Even with special, supportive sandals, she finds it difficult to walk a lot.

Pillala lives with her eldest son and his family ever since her husband passed away in an accident. When her younger son was married, Pillala was so happy for him. But she felt that she could not go to the wedding. She says that she feels it is obvious to others that she had leprosy. She was worried that the stigma and discrimination would be too much for her. So, she did not go to the wedding.

People like Pillala deserve to live their lives with JOY. Stigma and discrimination stop people like Pillala from taking part in times of celebration. It can prevent people from receiving help early and keep them from seeking treatment and support.

When you Shop to Stop Leprosy through this catalogue, you help find people like Pillala and provide treatment early. You help educate people about leprosy and fight the stigma they face.

Your Gift of Love of Reconstructive Surgery will help give somebody the same life-changing treatment that Pillala needed. Your gifts of love bring JOY! God bless you!

“I will turn their mourning into gladness;     I will give them comfort and joy instead of sorrow.” – Jeremiah 31:13, The Bible.

Reconstructive Surgery

12652

Clawed hand and foot drop are leprosycaused disabilities which can be corrected. However, not all surgeons and hospitals have the skill to provide surgery to cure this. This gift will ensure a patient with this surgery to enable them to move their fingers and grip again or to use their feet and walk!

Leprosy can cause permanent disability

Leprosy can attack and destroy the nerves in the body, especially in the hands, feet and face resulting in loss of feeling and/or function.

If leprosy is not correctly diagnosed, medical attention is not sought or provided early, the nerve damage can become permanent. This can cause ulcers on the hands and feet that won’t heal, clawed fingers, drop foot, weakness of the hands and feet or other deformities.

Reconstructive surgery and physiotherapy can make a huge difference for many people. But in some cases where the disease has been neglected and severe infection and ulceration has occurred, amputation may be the only option. An artificial limb may be possible to provide increased function and mobility.

We are so grateful for the hope and healing you give!
