WHEELCHAIR ACCESS:

All areas within our two Stands are wheelchair accessible by lifts in both stands. There are also a number of Disabled Viewing areas within the stands and beside the parade ring and new viewing area at the Open Stand. Disabled toilets are located on the ground floor of both the Powers and Jameson Stands. Should any patrons be unsure of how to access any areas, please ask a member of Fairyhouse Staff or contact the Racecourse Office and we will gladly escort you.

There is a baby changing and baby feeding room on the ground floor of the Powers Stand beside the lift.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. The Association of Irish Racecourse Veterinary Surgeons (AIRCVS)

Background Fairyhouse played a big part in the career of Dan Moore as a jockey and trainer. He was associated with three Irish Grand National winners in the 1940s, partnering Golden Jack in the famous Dorothy Paget colours to beat the great Prince Regent in 1943 and Revelry for Jack Doyle in 1947.

Moore was responsible for the training of Revelry and the 1946 winner Golden View II, though those wins were officially credited to Dick O'Connell, head lad at his Old Fairyhouse yard, after the stewards had ruled he could not hold a licence to train while still riding as a professional. In 1948 he quit the saddle and married Joan Comyn, a constant source of support for the rest of his life. The couple subsequently relocated from Old Fairyhouse to Ballysax Manor on the Curragh. Moore achieved a series of career highlights with the Raymond Guest-owned L'Escargot, who came to prominence by winning the Gloucestershire Hurdle in 1968. He won the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1970 and 1971 and the Grand National at the age of 12 in 1975, making his fourth appearance in the race, denying Red Rum a third consecutive win. He remains the only horse since Golden Miller to complete the Gold Cup/National double. The Moore-trained Quita Que won the inaugural Champion Chase in 1959 and also won the Cathcart Cup twice. In 1973 Inkslinger completed a Cheltenham Festival double in the Champion Chase and the Cathcart Cup. By the time of L'Escargot's Aintree triumph, Dan Moore's health was failing. Joan was a more than capable deputy and supervised the training of Tied Cottage, who won the 1979 Irish Grand National, ridden by his terminally ill owner Tony Robinson. The following year, Tied Cottage captured the Cheltenham Gold Cup, only to lose the race subsequently. After her husband died in 1980, Joan continued training for a while before immersing herself as an energetic manager of Punchestown Racecourse and INHSC steward, and enjoying life as a proud matriarch of the Moore and Carberry families. She died in 2019 at the age of 91.

This is an openlooking renewal of the SBK Dan & Joan Moore Memorial Handicap Chase, which has a roll of honour that includes the likes of wonderful Grade 1 winners Buck House, Merry Gale and Golden Silver.

This year’s contest features an 11-runner field and last season’s Aintree festival winner, Dancing On My Own, tops the weights. He might want the ground to dry out to defy 11st 12lb but, with no rain in the forecast, that’s not out of the question. A Grade 1 winner last season, Saint Roi is one of three runners for owner J P McManus but he’s yet to hit top gear this term and Mark Walsh opts to ride Fighting Fit, who is on an upward curve. The gelding will need to continue his progress to defy a handicap mark of 144. The pace could come from Uncle Phil, who seems to enjoy making the running and he’s the preferred pick of Paul Townend over stablemate Chavez. Townend’s mount was only just behind Lucid Dreams in a decent Grade 2 at Punchestown in November and is better off at the weights this time. Whiskeywealth is another that likes to go forward. He was in the process of running a nice race before a spill over hurdles last time. However, his task won’t be easy from 1lb out of the handicap. Letsbeclearaboutit has improved for fences this term and he’s likely to be popular in the market after his third in the Drinmore here last time. He is dropping in class and, if he handles the return to a shorter trip, he will be a major player with the potential of more to come over the larger obstacles.
