Welcoming back the crowds to the stands again after the Covid 19 pandemic is a major boost to the Irish racing industry and the many people that enjoy the festival every year. At Leopardstown, we look forward to an exciting weekend of racing. With the recent mild weather, there promises to be plenty of high-quality racing and it will be all the better with the crowds cheering on the runners and riders. First run in 1950 and recognised as the leading trial for the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham in March, Faugheen, Dawn Run, Hurricane Fly, Brave Inca and Istabraq, are just some of the top class hurdlers to have won this premier race. And of course, who can forget last year’s winner, Honeysuckle ridden by the brilliant Rachel Blackmore who went onto incredible success in Cheltenham and Aintree with multiple winners and accolades. In the challenging times of restrictions and lockdowns, Rachel and trainer Henry De Bromhead certainly brought incredible excitement to Irish racing and indeed sport in general. Our animal health products are used by many in the equine industry and, as a lifelong racing enthusiast, it gives me great personal pleasure to support this industry which has given me so much enjoyment over many years both as an owner and a spectator. We wish everyone at Leopardstown, and all those taking part, an enjoyable festival.

We welcome you to Day 2 of Dublin Racing Festival 2022 and we hope you enjoyed yesterdays racing, which has certainly whet the appetite for today. Todays raceday, features another four top class Grade 1 races, including the eagerly anticipated Chanelle Pharma Irish Champion Hurdle. We also welcome the return of full crowds to Leopardstown including those from overseas and those who are back for another day of top class racing. We have been eager to have racing fans back to experience National Hunt racing at Leopardstown for the past two years and yesterday was certainly a most enjoyable experience after almost twoyears of reduced capacity and behind closed doors racing, we hope you enjoy your experience today as much as we have enjoyed welcoming you back. We want to emphasise to all those attending, that although government restrictions relating to Covid-19 have been eased, we continue to encourage diligence and have kept minor protocols in place to ensure everyone has an enjoyable day.. This includes hand sanitiser around the racecourse, masks available should you wish to wear them and continuing queuing in some public hospitality areas. I would like to thank all of our sponsors today for their continued support of Dublin Racing Festival and Leopardstown Racecourse. WHAT’S GOING ON SECRET ORCHARD MARQUEE – ENCLOSURE The Secret Orchard Marquee is located beside the parade ring and is open to all racegoers with an admission ticket. The Marquee hosts The Winning Line tipster panel this morning at 11am and Live music both evenings after the last race. This we are delighted to welcome George Murphy after the final race at approximately 3.45pm. We will also be showing all the days racing on our large screen and TV’s around the marquee as well as the 6 nations rugby.

CHAMPIONS PATIO– ENCLOSURE The Champions PATIO is located by the Parade Ring at the far end of the Enclosure. The Champions Patio will serve as a artisan drinks bar for patrons to purchase drinks outside. There will also be a tea/coffee van located in this location for non-alcoholic refreshments. ATM €€€

HURRICANES (FORMERLY MADIGANS BAR) – ENCLOSURE Madigans Bar has become Hurricanes! Located under the grandstand in the tunnel; Hurricanes is our traditional “Pub”. There is currently a queuing system in place for Dublin Racing Festival.

GROUND FLOOR – GRANDSTAND The Ground floor of the Grandstand features the Tote Hall. The Mane Course Burger Bar located here will be serving Gourmet Burgers and Colts Cafe offers Barista Coffee, sandwiches, snacks, tray bakes and scones. Keep up to date with today’s sporting action in the Sports Lounge with its numerous plasma screens, free wi-fi, full bar and hot beef rolls.

FIRST FLOOR – GRANDSTAND The Paddock Food Hall located on the first floor of the Grandstand is a self-service restaurant, which is open all day offering diners traditional dishes including carvery roasts and hearty favourites. ATM €€€

SECOND FLOOR – Grandstand The 1888 Restaurant is located on the second floor of the Grandstand overlooking the Parade Ring. The Leopardstown Lounge (open only to Owners & Trainers and their guests who have horses running on the day) is located opposite the 1888 Restaurant on the second floor. Annual Members can access the Members Bar which is restricted to Leopardstown Annual Members on a race day. The second floor parade ring viewing balcony are both accessed from this level. O&T

THIRD FLOOR – Grandstand (Only Accessible with a Premium Level Ticket) The Third Floor of the Grandstand features the Circle Lounge, Third Floor Parade Ring Viewing Balcony, the Panoramic Suite and other private suites. A fullyserviced bar is available at the Circle Lounge along with a Gourmet Coffee outlet as well as a bistro selection including gourmet burgers, beer batter fish and chips, spicy chicken wings, Dublin Bay prawn cocktail, seafood chowder and Antipasta plates. Reserved Premium level seating can also be accessed from the Third Floor grandstand.

FOURTH FLOOR – GRANDSTAND All penthouse suites are located on the fourth floor of the Grandstand. GROUND FLOOR – Racing Hall Located under the grandstand at the turnstile side of the racecourse, the newest addition to the raceday offering at Leopardstown Racecourse features food offerings including hot beef rolls, Vegetable Curry, Fish and Chips plus more and a Barista Coffee station, not to mention salads, snacks, tray bakes and scones. Keep up to date with today’s sporting action with its numerous plasma screens, free wi-fi, and of course ample seating, large screens with all sports on view.

GROUND FLOOR – New Family Area Located at the old saddling stalls, we are delighted to have our new family area facilities which will be a permanent fixture at Leopardstown Racecourse going forward, open to the public. In the family area there is toilet facilities with family changing units. We have an outdoor playground as well as an indoor, soft play zone.

USEFUL INFORMATION First Aid The Order of Malta First Aid is situated in the new building beside jockeys weigh room. Lift There is a lift located opposite the marquee which gives access to second and third levels of The Grandstand Building – The Panoramic Suite, Private Suite and Circle Lounge. There is also a lift in the main Grandstand building giving access to all floors including The 1888 Restaurant and Leopardstown Lounge. Bottles and Glasses Customers are requested to take drinks to the closest available table to consume, as per Government guidelines on consuming alcohol on a premises.

RUNNERS & RIDERS PREVIEW THE LADBROKES NOVICE STEEPLECHASE OF €150,000 (GRADE 1) BEACON EDGE Talented staying hurdler last season, winning the Boyne Hurdle by a neck from Fury Road and finishing fourth in the Stayers’ Hurdle. Beaten favourite when second on chasing debut at Down Royal and belied his relative lack of experience when winning the Grade 1 Drinmore Chase. Faces an interesting renewal of rivalry with third-placed Fury Road. First time with cheekpieces. CAPODANNO Signed off last season with a wide-margin handicap win over 3m at Punchestown. Recovered from a bad mistake at the second-last to win well over 2m3f at Naas on his chasing debut, relegating his odds-on stablemate Gaillard Du Mesnil to third in the process. Upheld form with that rival when second to Bob Olinger at Punchestown three weeks ago. FIGHTER ALLEN Half-brother to Envoi Allen but failed to build on last season’s maiden hurdle win at Punchestown. Made an encouraging start over fences when chasing home stablemate and subsequent Grade 3 winner Stattler in 2m5f Fairyhouse beginners’ event in December. FRENCH DYNAMITE Boasts some smart form to his name over hurdles (rated 150), including a couple of seconds at Grade 2 level and a Grade 1 fourth over 3m at Punchestown. RUNNERS & RIDERS PREVIEW THE LADBROKES NOVICE STEEPLECHASE OF €150,000 (GRADE 1) FURY ROAD Ended last season with a couple of reverses in top 3m hurdle races and was runner-up on chasing debut in early November. Got closer to the winner of that race, Gabynako, when they filled the places behind Beacon Edge in the Grade 1 Drinmore at Fairyhouse. Jumped well when too good for shorter-priced stablemate Run Wild Fred in the 3m Grade 1 event here at Christmas. GAILLARD DU MESNIL High-class novice hurdler last season, winning Grade 1s at this venue (2m6f) and Punchestown (2m4f). In between, finished second to Bob Olinger at Cheltenham. Nothing like the same standard of form in two races over fences which have involved his stablemate Capodanno. GALOPIN DES CHAMPS Very progressive hurdler in the second half of last season, winning the Martin Pipe Handicap Hurdle and following up with an emphatic success in a Grade 1 novice event over 3m at Punchestown. Confirmed his status as an exciting chasing prospect for the champion trainer with an impressive success here after Christmas. MASTER MCSHEE Dual winner as a novice hurdler last season. Took a respectable third behind Bob Olinger on chasing debut at Gowran in November and justified a bold decision by his trainer when landing a Grade 1 contest at Limerick by a neck from Farouk D’alene. CAPTAIN GUINNESS Useful, if not top class, second-season chaser. Was third of five in the Arkle last season when forcefully ridden. His jumping tended to let him down last season, notably when falling in a Grade 1 at this meeting and then unseating at Punchestown in the spring. Landed a Grade 3 at Naas in comprehensive fashion on his return before running a career-best when third in the Tingle Creek behind Greaneteen. The youngest runner in the race and has potential for progress. CASH BACK Grade 1 placed over the C&D as a novice chaser but jumping has often let him down. Was wellbeaten behind stablemate Energumene in the Hilly Way Chase at Cork on his return before settling better than usual when running out a good winner of a 2m4f conditions race over hurdles at Clonmel. That will have done his confidence the world of good. CHACUN POUR SOI Five-time Grade 1-winning chaser who is bidding for a third win in this race and his record at Leopardstown reads 3-4. Was well below his best when last of five runners in the Tingle Creek. However, a genuine excuse emerged afterwards. He missed Christmas due to a minor setback but should win this if he is on song.

HORSE WELFARE – A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. The Association of Irish Racecourse Veterinary Surgeons (AIRCVS)

Easy winner of a Grade 3 event at Tipperary on first outing last season and then second in the Morgiana at Punchestown. Last three runs have been over this course and trip, including a wellbeaten fourth behind Honeysuckle in this event 12 months ago. Started the season quite brightly at Christmas, taking third behind Sharjah, and thus splitting Zanahiyr and Echoes In Rain. ZANAHIYR Smart juvenile hurdler last season though some limitations were exposed at Cheltenham and Punchestown. Exploited a good first opportunity in the senior ranks in a Grade 2 event at Down Royal and split Sharjah and Echoes In Rain in three-runner Morgiana Hurdle. Enhanced reputation with neck second to Sharjah here last time, 4 3/4l in front of Saint Roi. ECHOES IN RAIN Trounced the subsequently progressive Belfast Banter at Naas last February. Impressive when a 15l winner at Fairyhouse and ended the season on a high when winning a relatively soft Grade 1 event at the Punchestown festival. Tendency to run freely resurfaced when last of three in the Morgiana and disappointing in the Matheson Hurdle here on latest start.

THE TATTERSALLS IRELAND NOVICE HURDLE OF €150,000 (GRADE 1) EL FABIOLO Third in a Listed juvenile hurdle at Auteuil at three after a single Flat run. Showed no ill effects after a long absence when making all to a wide-margin win from a bumper-winning stablemate in a 2m maiden at Tramore on New Year’s Day. Faces a much sterner test now. FAROUT Flat winner in France. Won a Cork maiden last May and a novice event at the Galway festival. Finished fourth of seven in Grade 1 Royal Bond at Fairyhouse, losing third in the closing stages after an untidy leap at the last. Could make little impression behind the Elliott-trained pair Mighty Potter and Three Stripe Life here at Christmas. GATSBY GREY Began career with Declan Queally. Did well to come from off the pace to win a Navan bumper on debut last March and made a good start for Oliver McKiernan by winning a maiden hurdle in decisive fashion at Limerick’s Christmas meeting. Seems well suited by testing conditions. MY MATE MOZZIE Point-to-point winner for Mags Mullins and impressed with a Punchestown bumper win last April. Jumped well when slamming 106-rated Flat performer Barbados on hurdling debut at Punchestown and confirmed potential with a comfortable Grade 3 success at Navan. An untidy jump at the last made the difference when he lost out to Statuaire in the Royal Bond.

SIR GERHARD Bought for £400,000 after a point-to-point win for Ellmarie Holden. Won three bumpers (first two for Gordon Elliott) including the Grade 1 event at Cheltenham. Not at the same level when only third behind Cheltenham second Kilcruit at Punchestown subsequently. Jumped well and did not have to come off the bridle on hurdling debut at this track. STATUAIRE Second in a Listed juvenile hurdle at Auteuil in 2018. Arrived with Willie Mullins against the background of two failures to complete the course in 2020. Far too good for weak opposition in a Downpatrick maiden and then backed that up at Wexford. Caused a surprise when winning the Grade 1 Royal Bond, capitalising on a mistake made by My Mate Mozzie at the final flight. THREE STRIPE LIFE Easy winner of a Navan bumper last season before finishing a fine fourth to Sir Gerhard at Cheltenham. Won readily from modest opposition in a Fairyhouse maiden hurdle in November. Chance was harmed by a mistake at the second-last when second to stablemate Mighty Potter here at Christmas. That was still a good effort by a horse who possibly wants further. WATCH HOUSE CROSS Dromahane point-to-point winner last May for Sean Doyle. Took advantage of mishaps suffered by two key rivals when a 12-1 winner of a 21-runner maiden here six weeks ago. Faces a huge challenge now. COLONEL MUSTARD Second-season novice. Ended last season with 40-1 second in a 2m Grade 1 novice hurdle at Punchestown in April. Took advantage of a good opportunity down in class in a maiden at Galway in October. Produced solid effort when second to the high-class Jonbon in a fiverunner Grade 2 event at Ascot in December.

Paddy Mullins Celebrating one of Ireland’s most successful National Hunt trainers Today’s race is the fifth running of the Irish EBF Paddy Mullins Mares Handicap Hurdle and it celebrates one of Ireland’s most successful National Hunt trainers who had a special ability with mares and will be forever remembered as the man behind the great Dawn Run, the only horse in history to win the Cheltenham Champion Hurdle and Cheltenham Gold Cup. This wonderful 20race winning mare also won the French, Irish and English Champion Hurdle, the only horse to do so to date. Other great mares he trained include the 25-time winner Grabel, whose most notable victory was in the 1990 Duelling Grounds Hurdle in Kentucky. On the Flat, Paddy’s big race wins include the 1973 English Champion Stakes with Hurry Harriet and the 2003 Irish Oaks courtesy of Vintage Tipple. Paddy also won the Irish Grand National four times as well as winning three Galway Plates and four Galway Hurdles. Paddy passed away at the age of 91 in 2010 but his legacy will never be forgotten. Indeed, the Mullins family name is never far from the racing headlines.
