The Spectrum of Collecting The Collector’s Auction at our Woollahra premises on 19 April marks the first Leonard Joel auction in Sydney in 2021 and as such we have been reflecting on the past 12 months. With our ability to travel overseas being curtailed our focus has turned to our immediate surroundings with the home and its decoration taking up an ever-increasing importance in our lives. We hope that you take the opportunity to visit the saleroom in Queen Street, engage with the pieces on offer in real life, and consider which ones may become part of your story. 59

This cross-category auction brings together three excellent private Australian collections in addition to our customary offering, providing a truly unique selection of furniture, fine and decorative art, Asian art, and antiquities. The auction opens with property from the estate of Patti David, wife of grocery magnate John David, whose opulent Observatory Tower apartment was decorated by Thomas Hamel. Highlights from this collection are Lot 1, a George IV Rosewood Centre Table, and the wonderfully atmospheric painting Castle of Ischia, in the Bay of Naples, Mount Vesuvius Beyond, by Thomas Brabazon Aylmer (Lot 4), a general in the British Army and landscape painter who exhibited at the Royal Academy, London. If you cannot make it to Capri for another year, you can hang this view on your wall! The Estate of Rodney Ellison begins at Lot 59 with our cover lot, A Japanese Lacquer Suzuribako, the elegant writing box dating from the mid-Edo Period. Following Asian arts and artefacts we approach Roman antiquities at Lot 78, A Roman Marble Portrait Head of a Woman, also from the Ellison estate. It is rare to find such a fine ancient sculpture in private hands in Australia and provides an extraordinary opportunity for the discerning collector. The Property of a Lady extends our offering of antiquities with Etruscan pieces, Greek terracotta pieces such as Lot 87, the Ancient Greek Terracotta Antefix, and marbles like Lot 90, A Roman Marble Relief Fragment, as well as a good selection of fine English and European furniture, sculpture, painting, silverware, and glassware. Highlights from our mixed vendor section of the sale include a watercolour by Edward Henry Corbould (Lot 185), a lithograph by David Hockney (Lot 198), a rare French thuya wood occasional table by L'Escalier de Cristal (Lot 251) and an exquisite pâte de verre vase by Gabriel Argy-Rousseau (Lot 236). 78 A ROMAN MARBLE PORTRAIT HEAD OF A WOMAN Antonine Period, circa 140 AD, shown looking directly ahead with broad flat features and prominent cheekbones, the thick lidded eyes under soft arching brows, the inner canthi drilled, a soft, small mouth with lips pressed together above the rounded chin, her centre parted hair pulled back behind her ears continuing in two thick plaits coiled into a chignon, having short loops in front of each ear and a row of shorter hair falling out of the chignon at the back of her neck. OTHER NOTES: The Irish firm of Williams and Gibton (1830-44) are listed as cabinetmakers, auctioneers, valuators and house agents. They evolved from the well known firm of Mack, Williams and Gibton (1811-29) who were at 39 Stafford Street, Dublin and were appointed ‘Upholsters and Cabinetmakers to His Majesty, His Excellency the Lord Lieutenant and His Majesty’s Board of Works’ in 1806. They supplied some of the most important public buildings in Ireland including the Four Courts, the War Office, the Barracks Office, Dublin Castle, the Chapel Royal and the Treasure and Viceregal Lodge.
