Curated Lives: Private Collections and the Stories

They Tell

A private collection is more than an assembly of objects, it is a deeply personal narrative shaped by curiosity, discernment, and the pursuit of beauty. At its best, collecting becomes a form of self expression, an ongoing dialogue between the collector and the past. Each antique or artefact chosen carries its own story of the hands that crafted it, the era that shaped it, and the journey that brought it forward through time. Yet within a private collection these stories intertwine with the collector’s own tale, forming a landscape of taste, memory, and sentimental meaning.

The role of the collector has always been part historian, part custodian, and part explorer. It is the collector who identifies significance where others may see only the ordinary, who senses the resonance of a piece and envisions its place within a wider constellation of objects. Collecting is not driven solely by rarity or value, but also by instinct and an impulse to preserve, appreciate, and connect. When guided by personal passion rather than fashion a collection becomes a reflection of the collector’s identity, shaped by experiences, travels, relationships, and the evolving eye.

This auction brings together several remarkable private collections, each formed with a distinctive vision and a profound respect for the objects within it. Included in the auction are: Artworks from the Collection of William and Rosmarie Poate; Property from Annie Baring and Family; The Collection of William E Small AM; and pieces from The Robert Compton Jones Collection. Some of these collections have been shaped by multiple generations of a single family, others illustrate the passions of individuals who dedicated themselves to educating and developing their own personal taste, and some include a mixture of both.

In cultivating a private collection, one learns to look closely at craftsmanship, provenance, and subtle differences of form. This attentive way of seeing fosters a deeper appreciation not only for the objects themselves but for the cultures and histories they represent. Over time, a collection becomes a living archive, growing and shifting as the collector’s tastes mature. This catalogue celebrates the vision and dedication behind such collecting, inviting viewers not only to admire the pieces presented, but to imagine the passions that assembled them and perhaps to begin, continue, or refine a collection of their own.

Banjo Player is a quintessential example of Brett Whiteley’s fluid draftsmanship and his innate ability to capture character with an economy of line. Executed in ink on paper, the work demonstrates Whiteley’s lyrical command of gesture, where swift, confident strokes animate the musician and transform a simple subject into a study of rhythm, atmosphere, and human presence. Music was profoundly significant to Whiteley, serving as a fundamental, constant, and immersive element of his creative process and lifestyle. He famously worked with music playing loudly in his studio, using it to set a mood, generate energy, and influence the emotional intensity of his paintings. Created in late December 1974, the drawing belongs to a richly productive period in which Whiteley explored expressive figuration with increasing freedom.

BARRY HUMPHRIES (1934-2023)

Tuscany with Sunflowers 1987 oil on canvas

signed and dated lower left: Barry Humphries ‘87 54 x 65cm

provenance

Cliff DeYoung, Los Angeles

If you study the sunflowers at the bottom of this painting, you’ll notice one rising half again taller than the others. For me, it has always symbolized Barry’s wit, intelligence, and comic genius standing unmistakably above the rest. I met Barry Humphries in London in 1980 while we were filming Shock Treatment, the musical comedy from the creators of The Rocky Horror Show. We shared the same car to and from the studio, and during those daily rides we quickly developed a genuine friendship. Not long afterward, I saw his Dame Edna performance and became an enthusiastic admirer of his work. Throughout the 1980s, I returned often to London for film work, and my wife and I spent many memorable occasions with Barry, his wife Diane, and their sons. There were Sunday lunches, dinners, and evenings at the theater. We spent a week with them at a manor house Barry had rented in Robertsbridge, just south of London. Barry found it particularly amusing that the English butler, Thorley, seemed distinctly put out by the prospect of serving a house full of Australians and Americans. In the 1990s, Barry was a frequent presence in Los

Angeles, performing his Dame Edna stage shows, hosting a weekly television chat show, and appearing regularly on Ally McBeal. During those years, we spent considerable time together with the boys and my daughter, taking trips to a dude ranch in Solvang, visiting Palm Springs and touring Alcatraz in San Francisco.

I’ve always felt Barry would have had no objection to my selling this painting. A few years after he gave it to me, he noticed it hanging on my wall. He paused for a moment, smiled, and said, “You know, Cliff, this picture might be worth something when I’m dead.”

It was the usual Barry one-liner---delivered dry and a bit shocking for comic effect.

Bill was chairman and senior partner for an accounting firm and travelled extensively throughout the world in this capacity. He was a dedicated collector of antiques, with a strong appreciation for historical significance, fine craftmanship and enduring quality. His collection, developed over many years, reflected a considered and respectful approach to preserving objects of lasting cultural and aesthetic value. France and the far east were of special fascination. Nothing gave him more joy than to be emersed in antiquities and their history, reminding him of those special times abroad. We trust that this collection gives lasting satisfaction to those who are as passionate about enjoying and preserving the past.

Robert Compton Jones was a distinguished Sydney-born dealer who spent much of his life immersed in the London art world, specialising in Old Master paintings and European ceramics and porcelain. Through his company, The Woollahra Trading Company, he built an international reputation, acquiring works from respected dealers and auction houses from the 1960s through the 2000s and exhibiting at major fairs such as the Paris Biennale and the Olympia Antique Fair. His collecting habits reflected the eye of a true dealer-collector; he sought out exceptional provenance, historical depth and artistic significance, ultimately retaining for himself a carefully chosen group of works that he valued beyond their commercial appeal. After returning to Australia later in life, Jones continued to steward his collection until his passing in Sydney in 2020.

other notes

The son of painter Benvenuto di Giovanni, the artist trained under his father’s supervision in the traditional Sienese style of painting. He worked on several frescoes and altarpieces undertaken by his father’s studio, however, his first independent work, The Assumption of the Virgin 1498, (Museo Civico, Montalcino) showed several distinct differences to his father’s style such as elongated figures and more pronounced expressions.

The present lot depicts the birth of Christ with the infant at the centre, flanked by Joseph to the left, identifiable by his staff and elderly appearance, and Mary on the right, shown in prayerful posture with a halo. In the middle ground a rustic thatched roof stable houses an ox and donkey while above God the Father appears in a cloudburst surrounded by cherubs, symbolising divine blessing.

Sotheby’s Olympia, December 11, 2001, lot 146, where presumably acquired by Robert Compton Jones

other notes

The present lot is from the series of Meissen busts commissioned in 1744 by Maria Josepha, Electress of Saxony and Queen of Poland, as a monument to the Habsburg dynasty and its rise to imperial rank. All but one of the busts depict Habsburg rulers and it is quite possible that the impetus for the commission came from the court in Vienna. The first mention of the busts in the Meissen manufactory work reports is in April 1744 and the last in December 1747 (only nine are specifically referred to).

The Prague collector, Rudolf Just (1895-1972), acquired six of the Meissen busts in 1949. He was the last of a great tradition of Central European collectors of the decorative arts and was a scholarly and obsessive connoisseur, who famously inspired the fictional collector of Meissen porcelain in Bruce Chatwin’s novel Utz (1988). He sold three of his Meissen busts in 1967 and the other three (including this lot) were sold together with the remainder of his collection at Sotheby’s Olympia, 11 December 2001, lots 145-147.

protection of movable cultural heritage act 1986 (pmch act)

Buyers should be aware of the PMCH Act which protects Australia’s heritage of movable cultural objects and supports foreign countries’ right to protect their heritage of movable cultural objects. The PMCH Act regulates the export of nationally significant heritage objects, it is not intended to restrict normal and legitimate trade in cultural property, and does not affect an individual’s right to own or sell objects, within Australia. The PMCH Act was enacted in response to the 1970 UNESCO Convention on the Means of Prohibiting the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property. It is the responsibility of the Buyer to ensure that the export of any lots purchased are not subject to, or in breach of, this Act.

Information about the PMCH Act, the Protection of Movable Cultural Heritage Regulations 1987 and the 1970 UNESCO Convention, can be found on the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts website at: www.environment.gov.au/heritage/movable/index
