JAPANESE HIGHLIGHTS The Fairfax Collection An aristocrat’s pleasure Many of the fine lacquer works in this collection have an illustrious history with connections to the Daimyou Dougu - ‘the accoutrement of the feudal lords’ (and their families). These objects were made and acquired for personal enjoyment but they also indicated the status of the person who owned them and were in fact, tangible manifestations of scholarly pursuits and taste. The gentleman’s lacquer cabinet, (illustrated below), with a bamboo and sparrow theme, recalls the story of the ‘cut-tongue sparrow’ (shitakiri suzume) – an old man goes outside to cut firewood when he sees a wounded sparrow. Being kind-hearted, he takes it home to care for it, but his wife cuts out the bird’s tongue in a fit of jealousy. The old man looks for the sparrow and finds it deep in a bamboo grove, the splendid homeland of the sparrows. In the end, the old man is rewarded with treasures, while his wife is punished. With its fine Nashiji lacquer finish, low and high relief lacquer work in gold, silver fittings

THE KEITH CLARKE COLLECTION 10 AUGUST 2017 AT 2PM, MELBOURNE Keith Clarke (1930-2016) Leonard Joel is pleased to offer the curated interiors of ‘designing man’ Keith Clarke on 10 August. Keith is remembered affectionately as a man of great style and talent, earning his nickname as the ‘designing man’ from his work as the wardrobe supervisor for Channel 2. Along with his agility with a needle and thread, Keith was celebrated as a costume designer for the Australian Opera and Ballet, his most well-known design was for Dame Joan Sutherland’s 1976 performance in Idomeneo. The original sketches for the costume will be offered as lot 190 in the upcoming auction. Keith’s home encapsulated rich colours and traditional motifs with a twist. Blessed with a keen eye for design and a passion for acquiring items of beauty, his three bedroom residence was admired by all visitors, for its very decorative style, including Chinese works of art, traditional continental antiques and vibrant textiles. Highlights from the collection include lot 32, a lovely 19th century porcelain pot pourri and cover (pictured) & lot 23 a finely painted Chinese export ware vase (pictured).

Naturally, the aesthetic of these spaces enjoy a connection with who we are as individuals and the style of furniture and objects we want to surround ourselves with. Our recent Modern Design auction certainly hit the mark with an explosive collection of 20th century furniture which represented fast moving trends from the 1970s and 80s. SPORTING MEMORABILIA DECEMBER 2017, MELBOURNE
Max Williamson has recently consigned for sale a “Melbourne Sports Depot” Cricket Bat, signed by both the Australian and Indian teams during India’s inaugural tour of Australia in 1947-48. The 1947-48 series–the first of many memorable between India and Australia–was the first tour by a team representing the newly independent India. Australia won the series 4-0 with one match drawn, with Don Bradman scoring 715 runs at an average of 178.75. This was Bradman’s last Test series at home, and his second last series. The Australian signatures featured on the bat are Don Bradman, Lindsay Hassett, Ian Johnson, Sam Loxton, Ray Lindwall, Keith Miller, Neil Harvey, Sidney Barnes, Len Johnson, Don Tallon, Doug Ring, Bill Johnston and Bill Brown. The 18 Indian signatures include Lala Armanath, Vijay Hazare, Dattu Phadkar, Vinoo Mankad and C.S. Nayudu. The bat will be offered at Leonard Joel’s Sporting Memorabilia auction scheduled to take place in December, with an estimate of $1,500-$2,000.

However, buying a limited edition print or photograph is an accessible and affordable way to enter the art market as a first timer. Many of our new collectors often choose to buy a print over a painting as it’s a less daunting purchase and gives the collector an opportunity to simply enjoy what they buy instead of having to weigh up all the other issues surrounding the market and investing. Another reason to buy a mulitple is that it is very easy to monitor how your print is travelling in the auction market. Knowing that your work, for example, has been produced from a run of 50 works tells you that there potentially at least several on the market. In the past, Australian blue chip artists have been the steady sellers. This is usually thanks to our clients’ desire to own a work by their favourite artist (and to spend a fraction not a fortune). Having said this though, our recent Specialist Prints Auction results have shown that European and American artists are having the same impact on our new buyers, especially when it comes to iconic artists such as Dalí, Ertes and Vasarely, which will all feature in our next Prints auction in September.
