Important Chinese and Asian Art

This season’s Important Chinese and Asian Works of Art auction brings together distinguished private collections and carefully curated sections spanning Buddhist art, paintings, ceramics, and jade. Among the highlights is Radiance of Sacred Echoes: Himalayan and Buddhist Art (LOTS 45–110), comprising sixty-seven finely cast Buddhist sculptures and ritual works from various periods. The opening group derives from the renowned Sama Aranya Collection, New South Wales, researched and catalogued by Professor David Templeman of Monash University.
The Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy section features important modern works from The Cox Family Collection (LOTS 134–137), including paintings by Huang Yongyu, Wu Zuoren, Liu Wenxi, and Guan Shanyue, together with a distinguished group from the family of Rong Yiren of Wuxi, former Vice President of China (LOTS 145–152). Additional highlights include LOT 159, a framed calligraphy work by Zhao Puchu (1907–2000), and LOT 166, a landscape painting attributed to Dong Qichang, formerly in the collection of Major R. W. Scott and gifted by Major General Itsuki Toshi following the Second World War.
The ceramics section includes several exceptional Qing imperial porcelains, notably a Kangxi yellow-ground green-dragon bowl (LOT 7), a Yongzheng yellow-glazed anhua-decorated bowl (LOT 15), and a pair of Chenghua mark doucai “boys at play” conical bowls (LOT 11). The early ceramics section is led by eleven important Song wares from the Estate of Dr. Lam, Melbourne (LOTS 185–195), alongside a rare Sui/early Tang straw-glazed dragon amphora vase (LOT 210) and an exceptional Tang sancai and blue-glazed kneeling bactrian camel with female rider (LOT 205). Fine Song and Yuan works include a rare Song dynasty dark lacquer foliate dish from the Raymond and Victoria Tregaskis Collection (LOT 220), a Southern Song Longquan celadon mallet vase (LOT 245) and a fine Ming celadon longquan “lotus” vase (LOT 237).
The jade section continues Part II of the celebrated jade collection from the Estate of architect W. Y. Thomas Kwok of Hong Kong, featuring twenty-three exceptional works together with important Ming and Qing jades from various private collections. Highlights include a Qing yellow jade dragon vase (LOT 297), a white jade conch (LOT 303), a white jade teapot (LOT 307), and a rare eighteenth-century white jade figure of a foreigner holding a small dog (LOT 317).
Special attention should also be drawn to LOTS 112–118 from the collection of the late Japanese collector Hata Mineo (1949–2026), internationally respected for his expertise in early Asian art and Song–Yuan ceramics. Presented in his memory, this group reflects the refined connoisseurship for which he was widely admired.

A RARE AND FINE PAIR OF CHINESE RUBY RED-GROUND FAMILLE-ROSE BOWLS AND COVERS, DAOGUANG PERIOD (1821-1850), XIEZHU ZHUREN ZAO HALL MARK IN IRON RED WITHIN A SQUARE
Porcelain bearing the mark “Xiezhu Zhuren zao” (“Made for the Master of Xiezhu”) relates to the Qing imperial court and is closely associated with the Yuanmingyuan (the Old Summer Palace), once the principal imperial garden complex. Originally used as a summer retreat, the

frequently resided there, attending to state affairs, reading, and daily life, and was known for his frugality and diligence. Contemporary records, including the Veritable Records of the Daoguang Reign, note his presence at the studio during significant historical moments.
Porcelain inscribed with the mark “Xiezhu Zhuren zao” was specially commissioned from the imperial kilns at Jingdezhen for use by the Daoguang Emperor within this residence.
Following the emperor’s death in 1850, the Yuanmingyuan was looted and burned by AngloFrench forces in 1860, resulting in the destruction of the Xiezhu Ju and the loss of many imperial objects originally housed there.

AN IMPORTANT AND RARE IMPERIAL
CHINESE BLUE AND WHITE DRAGON BOWL, XUANDE SIX-CHARACTER UNDERGLAZE
BLUE MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1339-1435)
The bowl is finely decorated with a continuous frieze of four five-clawed dragons chasing flaming pearls and surrounded by cloud scrolls, the interior centre with a circular panel enclosing a scaly dragon within blue circles, the base is with a finely written sixcharacter Xuande mark within double blue circles. This extremely rare bowl represents the finest quality of porcelain produced at the Imperial kilns in the Xuande reign. The design of Imperial five-clawed dragons flying through the clouds and each chasing a flaming pearl is one of the most classic designs of all in Chinese porcelain, but that said this is one of the rarest patterns of the Xuande period. Originating as early as the Hongwu period (1368-1398) as seen on a blue and white and moulded bowl in the Tianminlou collection, illustrated in The Radiant Ming 1368-1644 through the Min Chiu Society Collection, Hong Kong, 2015, p. 18, no. 1. However, it was not until the Yongle period (1426-1435) that this design became standardised. A Yongle blue and white stem bowl of very similar decoration with fitted gold cover and silver stand was found in the tomb of Prince
Zhuang of Liang in Zhongxiang city, Hubei province, illustrated in the British Museum, Ming: 50 years that changed China, London, 2014, p. 87, fig. 70. On the Prince Zhuang of Liang example, not only the porcelain stem bowl but also the gold cover and silver stand bear a conforming five-clawed dragon design. It is important to note that an inscription on the gold cover dates it to the second year of Zhengtong (1437). The consistency of this design across precious mediums and different reign periods might suggest that in the early 15th century this design became one of the standard designs supplied by the court to various imperial workshops. Bowls of this type continued to be made in the following periods in the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) such as a Chenghua (1465-1487) example and a Hongzhi (1488-1505) example in the Shanghai Museum, illustrated by Lu Minghua in Porcelain Wares from the Official Kilns of the Ming, Shanghai, 2007, fig. 3-61 and fig. 3-69 respectively. Two Xuande bowls of related design are in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in A Panorama of Ceramics in the Collection of the National Palace Museum: Hsuan-te Ware I, Taipei, 2000, nos. 64 and 65. Xuande ‘dragon’ bowls of this form also exist in a slightly different version, in which
the dragons have three claws and the interiors are decorated with various floral scrolls and sprays in underglaze blue. This group includes four examples in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in ibid, nos. 69-73; one in the British Museum, illustrated by Jessica Harrison-Hall, Catalogue of Late Yuan and Ming Ceramics in the British Museum, London, 2001, p. 134, no. 4:26; one in the Matsuoka Art Museum, Tokyo, illustrated in the Toji Taikei (Ceramics of East Asia), vol. 42, Tokyo, 1975, figs. 51 and 52; and the other one sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 2 November 1994, lot 36. A band of lappet design around the base of these bowls is more common, instead of the crashing waves seen on this example, making this design exceptionally rare. 23cm diameter, 9.5cm high

19 A CHINESE BLUE AND GOLD ENAMEL “FRUITS” BOWL, YONGZHENG SIXCHARACTER UNDERGLAZE BLUE SEAL MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1723 - 1735)

清

A CHINESE TEADUST-GLAZED VASE, FANGHU, QIANLONG INCISED SIX-CHARACTER SEAL MARK AND POSSIBLY OF THE PERIOD (1736-1795)
Of faceted pear shape, the vase is moulded in low relief on the broad sides with large peach-shaped panels, and the neck, with indented corners, is set with a pair of rectangular lug handles. It is covered overall in an even olive-green glaze with fine golden speckling, extending to the base around the mark, which is reserved in brown glaze; the foot is finished with a blackish-brown wash.
Vases of this form were produced in the Qianlong period in a range of monochrome glazes. These include Ge-type, illustrated in Chinese Ceramics in the Idemitsu Collection, Japan, 1987, no. 960; flambé examples sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 29 May 2013, lot 2279, and 1 June 2011, lot 3716; and a larger Rutype vase sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 31 May 2017, lot 3203. A teadust-glazed example of comparable size (30.7 cm high) was sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 1 June 2011, lot 3708, and another, from the Studio of Clear Garden collection, at Christie’s New York, 22 March 2018, lot 609.

23 A CHINESE GE-TYPE VASE, FANGHU, QIANLONG SIX-CHARACTER SEAL MARK AND POSSIBLY OF THE PERIOD (1736-1795)
Of rectangular section, the vase is robustly potted in an archaic hu form, with peach-shaped panels to the front and back and a pair of rectangular tubular handles at the neck. The canted rim and neck are covered in a thick grey glaze with dark crackle. Archaism, a defining feature of Qing dynasty craftsmanship, is expressed here in both form and glaze: the hu shape derives from Shang and Zhou bronzes, while the glaze imitates Southern Song imperial Ge ware. A related Song prototype, a small Guan vase with canted corners in the Freer Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., is illustrated in Oriental Ceramics, Kodansha Series, vol. 9, Japan, 1987, no. 960. Comparable examples have appeared at auction, including Bonhams Los Angeles, 16–25 June 2025, lot 34; Bonhams San Francisco, 11 December 2012, lot 8064; and Christie’s Hong Kong, 30 November 2011, lot 3321, and 3 June 2015, lot 3248. 30.8cm high

A RARE CHINESE PARTIAL-GILT REPOUSSE BRONZE VASE, TOUHU, YONGZHENG MARK, QING DYNASTY (1644 - 1911)
As noted in the Book of Rites (Liji), pitch-pot (touhu) is a refined form of archery, derived from pre-Qin ritual practice and later adapted as a banquet game to entertain guests while retaining the moral and ceremonial aspects of archery rites.
The present vessel is an archaistic example of cylindrical form, with a straight mouth and a pair of smaller tubular side openings. The body is full and rounded, set with loop handles and raised on a tall foot. The dark bronze surface is partially gilt with finely detailed dragon motifs.
Well cast and proportioned, the vessel conveys a sense of dignity and balance, successfully evoking the form and spirit of ancient ritual bronzes.
A closely comparable bronze touhu vessel, a non-gilt example, is preserved in the Beijing Palace Museum (museum no. gu00177798).

The reverse of the lotus base inscribed with a line of Tibetan scripts, "Chos dang 'byar bpung (?) rlung rta dar", translated as: "May the religion spread widely and may the prayer flag of auspiciousness spread in all regions".
Vasudhara’s presence in Nepal arose from the impassioned worship of the goddess who promised both material wealth and spiritual prosperity. Her offerings included all-encompassing boons of fertility, abundance, wealth, and wisdom signified by the water pot, sheaf of corn, strand of jewels, and Prajanaparamita sutra held in each of her hands. Expressions of her popularity are evident from the numerous casts which apply this iconographic program including another 12th century example in (Kramrisch, The Art of Nepal, New York, 1964, pl. 15) and one dated to the 12th/13th century from the Zimmerman collection (Pal, Art of the Himalayas, New York, 1991, p. 48, pl 12).

A FINE AND LARGE TIBETAN
GILT-BRONZE FIGURE OF YAMANTAKA AND VAJRAVETALI, 18TH CENTURY
The powerfully modelled sculpture depicts Yamantaka Vajrabhairava, the wrathful manifestation of Manjushri, in ecstatic union with his consort The powerfully modelled sculpture depicts Yamantaka Vajrabhairava, the wrathful manifestation of Manjushri, in ecstatic union with his consort Vajravetali. The composition is dominated by a ferocious buffalo head with flaming hair, encircled by six wrathful faces and surmounted by additional heads, culminating in that of Manjushri. Vajrabhairava, the “Adamantine Anger” and destroyer of ignorance and death, is a principal yidam of the Geluk sect founded by Tsongkhapa
(1357–1419), which later gained prominence at the Ming and Qing courts. Closely associated with imperial authority, and linked to the Dalai Lama as well as the Qing emperors—both regarded as manifestations of Manjushri—this formidable deity came to symbolize both spiritual power and imperial legitimacy.

A VERY FINE CHINESE GILT-BRONZE ELEPHANT AND A VASE, MING/QING DYNASTY
The finely cast gilt-bronze elephant stands foursquare on a base, richly caparisoned with a saddle cloth adorned with jewels, beaded festoons, and tasselled pendants draped across the head, neck, back, and haunches. Suspended at the chest are three pairs of bells. The elephant turns its tail to the right, curling toward the rear leg. The saddle is decorated with lotus and ruyi-cloud motifs and supports a lotus base surmounted by a vase, with a further lotus ornament rising behind. The animal raises its head in an alert posture, with the trunk curled upward and grasping a conch or horn. The present example is notable for its exceptional quality and craftsmanship, the modelling elegant and naturalistic, with finely rendered details throughout.
In Tibetan Buddhism, the elephant (often referred to as the “elephant treasure”) is one of the Seven Treasures of the Wheel-Turning King, symbolising strength and power. The vase borne on its back is one of the Eight Auspicious Emblems, representing the inexhaustible teachings of the Buddha and the bestowal of blessings. The conch held in the trunk further signifies the far-reaching sound of the Dharma.
The motif of an elephant bearing a vase also conveys the rebus taiping youxiang (“Great Peace under Heaven”), as ping (vase) is a homophone of ping (peace), symbolising harmony and prosperity. Widely popular from the Ming and Qing dynasties onward, this auspicious imagery was favoured in both Buddhist and courtly contexts.
An almost identical example bearing a Yongle mark was sold at China Guardian, Beijing, 12 May 2012, lot 2562; another is in the Beijing Capital Museum, illustrated in Wisdom of Avatamsaka: Buddhist Art Treasures from the Beijing Capital Museum, p. 216. 33cm high

A TIBETAN THANGKA OF AMOGHAPASHA, 18TH CENTURY
The three-headed deity is seated in vajraparyankasana upon a moon disc supported on a lotus throne, holding a trishula in the upper right hand, the upper left in varada mudra, a lotus in the lower right hand, and a pasha in the lower left. The lower register is inscribed in Tibetan script. The inscription translated as: “Beneficence!
This is the representation of the entire tantra of the deity Amoghapasha - ‘He Who Holds The Unfailing Noose’ - who is depicted with three faces and four arms. As for the benefits of seeing this painting they arise from merely beholding the tantra (mis-spelled in text) itself.
Just by seeing this cotton-cloth painted bodily representation of that deity, it would be quite befitting to also see the painted image of the mighty deity Chenrezig (Avalokiteshvara) which is housed in the incomparable palace of the Potala.
With this painting’s superior qualities, it will fully resolve the terrors of the great hell-realms, the eight great fears as well as the five great sins which are beyond all forgiveness. Moreover things such as abandoning the Holy Buddhist teachings, uttering wicked things concerning the Buddha, the bodhisattvas and the order of Buddhist monks and other such things, all these obscurations of what is holy, inasmuch as they are perceived they will be condemned and purified by merely seeing this painting.
Through your own diligent work to avoid the lowest of the Hell-realms you will attain complete liberation from such states. Through the hundred-thousand merits arising from the mighty deity Brahma, the roots of appropriate virtue will develop and you will attain the most excellent virtuous roots of all worldly people.
At the time of your death moreover, the Mighty Arya Avalokiteshvara himself will reveal his face and engage in teaching and he will also dispense comfort and a sense of safety to all beings. At the time of your death and the transmigration of your consciousness moreover, you will be reborn in the most perfect blissful realm of Sukhavati and you will become free from all things that obscure your mind, your lifespan will expand to fifty times one hundred thousand years - all of which you will recall.
Throughout the very heart of the state of the entirety of Enlightenment this will be your very final rebirth. Just by seeing (the actuality of) this present body, once the heap of merit becomes so that it is absolutely beyond any measure whatsoever this will be inscribed for all eternity. As for the many deeds which you will perform they will possess absolutely no sense of backsliding to them at all. May the state of unexcelled Enlightenment and completely pure awakening in all its vastness come into being! (May) Virtue prevail!

Collection of Mineo Hata
lots 112 – 118
Hata Mineo (1949-2026) was born near the Izumo Grand Shrine in Shimane Prefecture, a region long associated with myth and spirituality, as recorded in the ancient chronicles Kojiki and Nihon Shoki. Raised in this environment, he developed an early sensitivity to beauty that would shape his lifelong pursuit as a collector.
Coming from a family of soy sauce brewers with a respected local standing, Hata moved to Tokyo in 1967 as part of the postwar “group employment” movement, working in the medical supply trade while cultivating a growing interest in antiquities. During this time, he was deeply influenced by the philosophy of Yanagi Sōetsu, whose emphasis on intuitive, direct appreciation of beauty became the guiding principle of his collecting.
In 1976, Hata left salaried work to enter the art trade, facing early financial hardship but remaining steadfast in his independent vision. Guided by the spirit of the sukisha, he relied on instinct rather than market trends or academic authority, pursuing only objects of exceptional quality with quiet dedication.
He opened Hata Kobijutsu in Osaka in 1984 and was admitted to the Osaka Art Club in 1990, later expanding with a gallery in Ashiya. Over time, he built a reputation for connoisseurship and integrity. His collection spans Chinese, Japanese, and Korean works, with a particular strength in Song dynasty ceramics, alongside archaic bronzes, Ming porcelain, Buddhist sculpture, and Japanese arms and armour.
Highlights include a Southern Song Longquan celadon kinuta vase sold at Christie’s New York in 2008 for over US$2.28 million, and a Xuande blue and white ‘fish’ bowl sold at Sotheby’s in 2017, which set a world auction record. Works he handled have entered major museum collections, including the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
Hata Mineo’s collection represents not merely an assemblage of exceptional works, but the distillation of a life devoted to the pursuit and understanding of beauty in East Asian art.

ZHAO PUCHU 1907 - 2000
Calligraphy in running script ink on paper
Hanging scroll, framed
The following piece, by artist Zhao Puchu (1907-2000), beautifully brings together traditional chinese calligraphy and the compassionate core of Buddhism. The characters rendered-Namo Guanshiyin Pusa-form a sacred phrase honoring Guanyin, who is believed to hear and respond to the cries of the world.
Born in Taihu, Anhui Province, Zhao was more than just a skilled calligrapher; he was a preeminent scholar, a dedicated social activist, and the long-serving President of the Buddhist Association of China. Serving as a vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, he navigated the complexities of modern Chinese politics while remaining deeply committed to the revival and protection of Buddhist culture.
In this particular work, one can examine his signature style: a balance of rounded, elegant strokes and a resilient, disciplined internal structure. It is a style that mirrors his own character-conveying a deep, unshakable serenity amidst the turbulent currents of his time. As a piece of devotional art, it remains highly regarded by collectors not merely for its aesthetic and calligraphic merit, but as a symbolic artifact representing the resilience of faith and the scholarly ideals of moral cultivation that Zhao Puchu embodied throughout his life. Similar works fetched hammer prices of HKD 713,000 at the 2013 Poly Auction Hong Kong Autumn Sales and RMB 782,000 at the 2015 China Guardian Spring Auctions.

197 A RARE AND FINE CHINESE GONGXIAN GREEN-GLAZED MOULDED RUYI-FORMED BOX AND COVER, TANG DYNASTY (618 - 907)

The box is modelled with five lobes and moulded decoration to each side. The cover is applied with a pair of confronted phoenix perched upon an elaborate looped ribbon ornament. The base is decorated with a quatrefoil floral design and three raised spur marks. Each side is enclosed within a double-line border and covered overall with an olivegreen glaze. With an old fitted box.
The motif of confronted phoenixes is a recurring decorative theme on Chinese metalwork and
ceramics from the Tang dynasty onwards. A related composition, with confronted phoenixes flanking a looped ribbon ornament similar to that seen on the present box, appears on a 10th-century silver box and cover from the Dr Carl Kempe Collection, sold at Sotheby’s London, 14 May 2008, lot 41.
A comparable box and cover from the Ding kilns, formerly in the Hans Popper Collection and exhibited in the 1937 Exhibition of Ancient Chinese Art at the Musée de l’Orangerie, Paris, is illustrated in Eskenazi, London, Song Ceramics from the Hans Popper Collection, London, 2005, no. 18. 12.6cm wide; 4.5cm high

A VERY RARE AND FINE CHINESE SANCAI AND BLUE GLAZED KNEELING BACTRIAN CAMEL AND A FEMALE RIDER, TANG DYNASTY (618 - 907)
The powerfully modelled camel is shown kneeling in a naturalistic posture and is covered overall in an even amber glaze. Seated between the humps is a female rider wearing an official’s robe and hat, glazed in blue and green, with the right hand, face and hat left unglazed.
Camels modelled in a kneeling posture are rare, and examples accompanied by a female official rider appear to be exceptionally uncommon. No closely comparable examples have been identified to date. A related sancai-glazed camel with a foreign rider is preserved in the National Museum of China, see: National Museum of China.

A RARE CHINESE AMBER GLAZED MARBLE PILLOW, TANG DYNASTY (618 - 907)
Marbling (jiao tai) was a popular decorative technique on Tang dynasty ceramics, applied to a wide range of forms including jars, cups, bowls, dishes, and censers. Marbled sections were also inlaid into larger objects, such as pillows, for decorative effect. The marbled appearance was achieved either by blending clays of different colours during formation or by applying contrasting slips to the surface. In both cases, the vessel was then covered with a transparent glaze, most commonly amber, as seen on the present lot.
A similar example sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 28 November 2018, lot 307. Similar pillow also in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Porcelain of the Jin and Tang Dynasties, Hong Kong, 1996, p.238, no.217. 14.5 x 10 x 7.5cm

AN EXTREMELY RARE AND LARGE STRAW-GLAZED DRAGON AMPHORA VASE, SUI/EARLY TANG DYNASTY, 7TH CENTURY
Of baluster form, rising to a tall waisted neck with a cup-shaped mouth, the neck applied with two intertwined dragons climbing upward toward the rim, their bodies forming loop handles just below the mouth, all covered in a finely crackled creamy-white glaze.
On the more commonly encountered Tang dynasty amphorae, the handles are typically formed as two separate dragons issuing from either side of the body and rising individually to bite the rim. By contrast, the present vase is distinguished by its highly unusual design, with two dragons emerging at the neck, entwining as they climb upward, and joining at the rim in biting the mouth edge. This striking handle configuration appears to be exceedingly rare, and no second comparable example has been noted on the market or museum collections.

A VERY FINE CHINESE ‘KINUTA’ LONGQUAN CELADON WASHER, SOUTHERN SONG DYNASTY (1127 - 1279)
The washer is finely potted with an angular profile, rising from a short foot to a slightly everted rim, and is covered overall in an unctuous glaze of even bluish-green tone, save for the foot ring burnt orange in the firing.
The ethereal sky-blue colour and remarkably tactile, almost silken, surface of the glaze exemplify the finest ideals of celadon production. Generations of potters across various kilns sought to emulate such texture and colour, though it was seldom matched outside the imperial Ru and Guan kilns. Even among imperial Guan wares, considerable variations in tone are evident, with less successful examples discarded in kiln waste pits (see Select Ceramics from Laohudong Kiln Site in Hangzhou, Beijing, 2002, pp. 16, 24–25).
The refinement of Southern Song Longquan celadons was closely linked to the establishment of the Guan kilns after the Song court moved south to Hangzhou (see Zhu Boqian, ed., Celadons from Longquan Kilns, Taipei, 1998, p. 17). While Longquan kilns largely produced wares for prosperous commercial patrons, their finest output occasionally approached imperial standards. Southern Song examples are particularly admired for their thick, lustrous bluish-green glazes, the best of which are known in Japan by the term kinuta. Some scholars have further suggested that Longquan kilns may also have supplied wares directly to the court when required (see Rose Kerr, Song Dynasty Ceramics, London, 2004, p. 89). The present washer may be considered among this elite group.
Comparable examples include a pair of washers of this type in the MOA Museum of Art, Atami, illustrated in Song Ceramics, Tokyo, p. 108, no. 71; another in the Idemitsu Museum of Art, Tokyo, illustrated in Sensei, Bansei and Celadon of Longquan Yao, Izumi, 1996, p. 16, no. 48; and related examples excavated from the Jinyucun hoard, Suining, Sichuan, illustrated in Jinyucun Hoard of Southern Song Dynasty in Suining, vol. II, Beijing, 2012, pls. 62–64.

Auction comparables include a slightly larger kinuta-type washer sold at Christie’s New York, 22 March 2019, lot 1742; further related examples sold at Christie’s New York, 13 September 2019, lot 1045; Christie’s Hong Kong, 30 May 2018, lot 3096; Christie’s Hong Kong, 7 June 2022, lot 3114; and Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 8 April 2023, lot 3516.

A RARE CHINESE LONGQUAN CELADON VASE, POSSIBLY YUAN DYNASTY (1279-1368)
The vase is finely potted with a long cylindrical neck rising from a pronounced flange above the shoulder. The body is covered overall with a soft green glaze stopping just above the foot rim. It’s with a fitted pouch and a Japanese wood box.
This type of vessel, likely derived from a metal prototype, is commonly referred to as a ‘pure water’ or ‘holy water’ bottle, and is closely associated with the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara (Guanyin). The form is related to the kendi and kundika, sharing the distinctive flanged neck, but differs in lacking a spout on the shoulder. Only a small number of Longquan celadon examples of this type are recorded. For a comparable example in the Palace Museum, Beijing, see Longquan of the World: Longquan Celadon and Globalization, Vol. II: State Vessels (Beijing: The Palace Museum, 2019), cat. no. 067. A FINE CHINESE LONGQUAN MALLET VASE, SOUTHERN SONG DYNASTY (1127 - 1279)
The vase is of mallet form, with sides tapering gently from the canted shoulder towards the foot. The tall neck is flanked by a pair of dragon-fish handles below a widely flared mouth with an upturned rim. It is covered overall in an even glaze of soft sea-green tone, the foot ring left unglazed.
The vase is accompanied by an old brocade wrap and a gilt-lacquer inscribed black lacquer box, the reverse of the cover bearing the Tokugawa hollyhock crest. Celadon vases of this mallet form, known in Japan as kinuta, rank among the most prized Longquan wares. Scholars have suggested that the shape, though resembling a paper mallet, may ultimately derive from imported Islamic glass vessels introduced to China during the Song period. Examples of related forms have been excavated from archaeological sites and shipwrecks, attesting to their early circulation and popularity.
Large kinuta vases with dragon-fish (feiyu) handles are particularly rare. The auspicious feiyu motif was favoured during the Yuan dynasty and reflects the broad cultural exchanges of the period. Closely comparable examples are preserved in important collections, including the Tokugawa Art Museum, Nagoya; the Freer Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; and the Palace Museum, Beijing.
Comparable examples have appeared at auction, including Christie’s Hong Kong, 4 October 2018, lot 30, and 1 December 2010, lot 3103; and Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 1 April 2019, lot 3028. 26.3cm high provenance
Formerly in the collection of the Tokugawa family (by repute, based on the tomobako).

The Estate of W.Y. Thomas Kwok (1944 - 2017) Part II,
Acquired in Hong Kong in the 80s.
lots 257 – 279

Born in Macau, Mr. Kwok studied architecture in Melbourne and built a four-decade career with Wong & Ouyang, shaping Hong Kong’s skyline. His collecting began with Japanese occupation stamps (1941–1945), issued during Japan’s wartime administration of Hong Kong and other territories. Gradually, his passion shifted to jade, inspired by visits to auction houses.
At the time, Hong Kong’s auction scene was emerging—Sotheby’s debuted in 1973, Christie’s in 1986. By the late 1980s, Kwok was attending smaller sales, joining the city’s first generation of serious collectors. His jade holdings embody not only technical excellence and cultural symbolism but also the personal evolution of a connoisseur whose interests bridged philately, architecture, and Chinese art heritage.

A LARGE WHITE JADE ARCHAISTIC FACETED VASE AND COVER, FANGHUAND, QIANLONG FANGGU SIX-CHARACTER INSCRIBED MARK, QING DYNASTY (1644 - 1911)
The exterior front of the vase is finely inscribed with a Qianlong imperial text, concluding with the inscription “Qianlong Bingwu Yuti” (“Imperial Inscription of the Qianlong Period, Bingwu Year [1786]”), and flanked by two Qianlong seal marks. The sides are plain, applied with a pair of taotiemask handles suspending loose rings. The base bears a six-character inscription reading “Daqing Qianlong Fanggu” (“Made in archaic style during the Qianlong period of the Great Qing”).
The three great emperors of China’s Qing dynasty (1644-1911) - Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong - were famous for their love of antiques. All three were active collectors and frequently commissioned wares made in ancient styles out of admiration for the golden eras of China’s past, although it was likely the Qianlong emperor who had the strongest fascination with the antique. Archaistic wares produced during his reign included porcelains, bronzes, and as can be seen in the present lot, fine jades.
The shape of the present vase is based on bronze prototypes of Han dynasty (206 BC-220 AD) date. Compare two bronze fanghu of closely related form illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum - Bronze Articles for Daily Use, Hong Kong, 2006, pp. 68-9, nos. 59-60. Compare, also, the form of the Han dynasty bronze fanghu in this sale (lot 1259).

A RARE AND FINE CHINESE YELLOW JADE “DRAGON” VASE, QING DYNASTY, 18TH /19TH CENTURY
The vase is superbly carved in high relief with a dragon coiled around the neck, pursuing a flaming pearl.
The rich yellow tone of yellow jade was traditionally associated with imperial authority and was especially prized by the Qing court. The present vase is carved from a finely polished stone of warm, lustrous tone and demonstrates exceptional craftsmanship throughout. As early as 1388, the Gegu yaolun (The Essential Criteria of Antiquities) records that: “the most valuable yellow jade should be stones with the colour of the chestnut kernel, also known as ganhuang; smoky yellow ranks next in quality” (see Sir Percival David, Chinese Connoisseurship, London, 1971, p. 120).
Two covered vases carved from similarly toned yellow jade are preserved in the Palace Museum, one dated to the Qing dynasty and the other to the Qianlong period (1736–1795), illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum –Jadeware (III), Hong Kong, 1995, pp. 78 and 181, nos. 66 and 148. Compare also a related white jade vase with closely comparable decoration, ibid., p. 75, no. 63.
Further comparable examples include a yellow jade carving worked in high relief with a chilong dragon pursuing a flaming pearl, sold at Christie's New York, 20 March 2019, lot 803, and a yellow jade you vessel sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 30 May 2018, lot 2930. 17.8cm high

A CHINESE WHITE JADE CARVING OF A CONCH SHELL, QIANLONG MARK, QING DYNASTY (1644 - 1911)
One side of the shell has finely inscribed in gold pigment with a Zen Buddhist poem: “Bodhi has no tree, the bright mirror is not a stand. Originally there is nothing; where can dust settle? The first month of the 53rd year of Qianlong, imperial gift to Yongfu temple.”
It’s with a carved fitted Zitan stand and an old fitted box.
The present white jade carving in the form of a conch shell is exceptionally rare, if not unique. Conch shells (Sanskrit: sankha; Chinese: luo) are among the Eight Buddhist Emblems (bajixiang), symbolising the far-reaching sound of the Buddha’s teachings and their transmission. Closely associated with Tibetan Buddhist ritual, such objects held particular significance at the Qing court, especially under the reigns of the emperors Kangxi and Qianlong, both devout adherents.
A number of real conch shells, often elaborately mounted or embellished, were commissioned by the court or presented by high lamas for ritual use. Examples are preserved in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in Monarchy and Its Buddhist Way (1999), pp. 149–155, nos. 61–65. Jade carvings in this form are comparatively rare, as vessels of this type were not typically associated with the Confucian scholar’s desk, reflecting instead a syncretic blending of literati and Buddhist traditions. Compare a large white jade conch shell carved with the Eight Buddhist Emblems from the Shorenstein Collection, sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 1 December 2010, lot 2960.
Overall: 21.5cm; Jade: 16cm high; $15,000-25,000

A SMALL CHINESE HUANGHUALI STOOL, 17TH CENTURY
During the Ming dynasty, small and low chairs were likely very common in households. However, it is rare to find extant example made from huanghuali wood. An identical example of a huanghuali fangdeng can be found in the collection of Wang Shixiang, illustrated in Wang Shixiang, Ming shi jia ju zhen shang, Hong Kong, 1985, p.59, pl. 10. Another similar pair, see Bonhams Hong Kong, 27 November 2024, lot 105.
