Decorative Arts

Our first Decorative Arts auction of the year begins with three single owner collections, each featuring wonderful examples within their own categories.

First is a collection of ceramics by Marguerite Mahood and related material consigned by members of her family, never before offered to the market (lots 1–31). This includes coveted examples of Mahood’s work with intricate reticulation, often incorporating mythical creatures such as dragons, goblins and other animals. Alongside this is offered a small archive of material relating to Mahood’s work and life, including four hand-made pictorial Christmas cards, one entirely hand-drawn, original exhibition catalogues, copies of Mahood’s PhD thesis ‘Australian Political Caricature, 1788-1901’ and its published version, and various letters and photographs.

Following the great success of the offering of the Bob and Gladys Parry collection of clocks, mechanical music, and automata in our last Decorative Arts auction, we now present the next part of this collection, a fascinating collection of French doll automata (lots 32–49). Mostly acquired from specialist auctioneers in the U.S over the last two decades and rare to the Australian market in quality and quantity, this collection features desirable makers such as Leopold Lambert and Roullet et Decamps, mostly musical examples, animated to simulate human movement, variously two to four movements per piece, some synchronic, depending on the complexity of the movement.

Our third single-owner offering in this auction is a private collection of early silver, mostly English, formed over the last four decades (lots 61–88). Mostly Georgian, with some earlier and later pieces, the collection is centred on table ware with an interest in flatware. Within the collection are examples rare to market, such as a pair of ‘Coburg’ pattern basting spoons, a Regency pattern first produced by Paul Storr, and another in ‘Old England’ pattern, a pattern thought to have been produced for the coronation of William IV.

From various vendors, we have a selection of diverse items of Australian historical importance and interest (lots 155–165), including colonial Tasmanian manuscript journals and records, Australian sculpture, and a striking large Art Nouveau firewood box by Robert Prenzel. Of exceptional rarity and importance in this section, lot 165 is a pair of batting gloves worn by Donald Bradman in the historic record-setting fourth Test of Australia’s 1948 Ashes tour in which he made his last Test century. Believed to be one of only five pairs of Bradman’s matchworn batting gloves traced, and possibly the only pair in private hands with known Ashes provenance, the gloves – both signed by Bradman – were gifted by him to the notable collector Tony Baer in 1972 under cover of a letter included with the lot.

Highlights in other categories in our March auction include a very fine and impressive large marble sculpture dated 1877 by the Rome-based Victorian sculptor Alexander Macdonald (lot 257). Representing a Classical female figure, probably Diana, it exemplifies the fine idealizing work for which Macdonald is best known. Another striking sculpture in our auction is an artist’s proof of a bronze by the modern American sculptor Richard MacDonald, known for the dynamism of his figure works, of which ‘Doves’ (lot 256) is a superb example.

Lots 140–146 are various parts of very large and impressive banquet service of porcelain, crystal, and silver acquired by the vendor from the highly-esteemed maker De Lamerie. England, all richly hand-decorated and gilded in the maker’s Neo-Classical ‘Robert Adam’ pattern, now offered as services for twelve together with complementary lots.

Beyond all that, we offer our usual rich and wonderfully diverse array of furniture, objects, and art works – from early English and continental pieces to a wonderful large Mexican arma Christi to a very large antique Persian carpet to antique and period Louis Vuitton cases –that we look forward to sharing with all.

The volume covers a wide range of administrative subjects including management of convicts and other prisoners, absconders and rewards, management and disposal of Crown lands and other property, petitions and other applications to the colonial administration, and the magistracy and police.

other notes

Exceptionally rare, this is believed to be one of only five pairs of Donald Bradman’s match-worn batting gloves traced, and possibly the only pair in private hands with known Ashes provenance and association with a century-making innings, and a most historic one at that.

As Bradman confirmed in the 1972 letter included in this lot, these gloves were worn by him in the legendary Fourth Test of the 1948 Ashes series, played at Headingley. Before the tour, Bradman, captain of the Australian team and on his final international tour, had expressed his aim that Australia prevail undefeated throughout the tour. Australia won the first two Tests and the third was drawn. In the Fourth Test, England’s declaration in its second innings early on the fifth day set Australia a target for victory of 404 runs in short time. Australia succeeded with fifteen minutes left to play, setting a record for the highest victorious run chase that stood until 1976. Bradman’s contribution of 183 (not out) to the total was his twenty-ninth and last Test century.

With Australia’s victory in the Fifth Test three weeks later, together with its wins and draws in the tour’s other first class matches, Bradman’s pre-tour aim was achieved, making his 1948 team the only Test match team before or since to play an entire tour of England without losing a match, a feat for which it was quickly given its lasting nickname ‘The Invincibles’.

Tony Baer, to whom Bradman presented the gloves in 1972, was an important collector of a wide range of artefacts and material relating to the history of cricket. The Melbourne Cricket Club Museum was founded on his donation of a large part of his collection, some 1,200 objects, to the Melbourne Cricket Club in the late 1960s.

other notes

Alexander Macdonald was born in Rome in 1847, the son of the Scottish sculptor Lawrence Macdonald (1799–1878) who had settled in that city in 1832 (subsequently occupying the studio in the former Palazzo Barbarini stables of the leading Neo-Classical sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen) and successfully attracted the patronage of well-born English and other Grand Tourists with his work in its idealised Classical manner. Trained by his father, Alexander took over his studio and continued in the same vein. He is recorded as having produced a number of fine Classical figure subjects, including one exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 1877.

A marble figure group by Macdonald of Venus and Cupid, shorter but comparable to the present lot, was sold at Christie’s in 2009 (19th Century Furniture, Sculpture, Works of Art, and Ceramics, including Property from the Palazzo of a Milanese Noble Family, London, 19 March 2009, lot 168, £48,000 hammer price) and resold the following year at Sotheby’s (19th & 20th Century European Sculpture, London, 23 November 2010, lot 11, £40,000 hammer price).
