PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE BOARD CHAIR’S MESSAGE

I am proud to present Lenoir Community College’s 2025 Annual Report, a reflection of our progress and the bold new direction that is shaping our future. This year has been defined by innovation and growth, and anchored by the launch of MACH5, our new five-year strategic plan. Inspired by the momentum of our region’s expanding aviation sector, MACH5 represents our commitment to propelling students from every field toward new heights in rapidly evolving industries.

A major milestone in that vision was the launch of LCC Online. With more than 50 fully online credentials and over 500 online courses available, this initiative makes it possible for students to earn high-quality degrees anytime, anywhere, with the same tuition affordability and student-centered support we are known for. This transformational step removes barriers and opens doors for working adults, parents, and professionals who need flexibility without compromising quality.

Construction also continues on the Senator Jim Perry Aviation Center for Excellence, with an anticipated opening this spring. This state-of-the-art facility will be transformational for workforce training in aviation and related industries, further establishing LCC as a leader in regional economic development.

Our student body continues to grow, and with it, the opportunities we can provide. Thanks to the hard work of our Foundation and the generosity of our donors, scholarship support nearly doubled this year, helping ensure that more students than ever can pursue their goals without financial barriers.

Looking ahead, we remain steadfast in our role as a leader in workforce and economic development in Lenoir, Greene, and Jones Counties and beyond. We are equipping graduates with the skills needed for today’s jobs while anticipating the needs of tomorrow’s economy. Our programs, partnerships, and commitment to excellence position us as a trusted partner for employers and a lifeline of opportunity for our community.

There has never been a more exciting time to be part of Lenoir Community College. We are grateful for the support of our partners, alumni, and friends, who share in our mission to transform lives through education. Together, we are launching toward a future of limitless possibilities.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees of Lenoir Community College, it is an honor to be part of a team of dedicated professionals who share one goal: transforming lives through education. This past year has been another period of exciting growth for the College, with expanded programs, new partnerships, and innovative services that continue to meet the needs of the communities we serve.

There has never been a better time to enroll at LCC, as we provide opportunities for both students beginning their educational journeys and individuals seeking training or retraining to strengthen our regional workforce. Our faculty and staff remain among the very best in the state, responding with creativity and commitment to the needs of Lenoir, Greene, and Jones Counties. Their work ensures that LCC maintains its well-earned reputation for academic excellence and visionary leadership.

As a Board, we remain committed to advancing education, workforce development, and shortterm training opportunities that connect hope to opportunity. We are proud to stand with LCC as it continues to make a lasting impact on the lives of our students and the future of our region.

Dr. Rusty Hunt, President

I am continually inspired by the passion and dedication I witness across our campus—from students achieving their goals to faculty and staff who go above and beyond every day. It is a privilege to serve alongside a 16-member board that wholeheartedly supports the mission and vision of the College. Together, we celebrate the accomplishments of our College community and look ahead with optimism to the opportunities that await.

We are proud to stand with LCC as it continues to make a lasting impact on the lives of our students and the future of our region.
Randy Smith, Board of Trustees Chair

A NEW ERA OF ONLINE LEARNING AT LCC

L

enoir Community College has officially launched LCC Online, a new way for students to earn the same high-quality degrees offered on campus—anytime, anywhere. The launch took place at the College’s Professional Development Day on August 13, marking the beginning of a new era in flexible, accessible learning for students near and far. LCC Online offers more than 50 fully online credentials and over 500 online courses designed to meet the needs of busy adults, working professionals, and parents seeking flexibility in their education.

“LCC Online is a transformational moment for our college,” said Dr. Rusty Hunt, President of Lenoir Community College. “We are removing barriers to higher education by making it possible for students to access the same quality instruction, resources, and support services we offer on campus—completely online. This means more people in our community and beyond can achieve their educational and career goals without sacrificing their personal or professional commitments.”

Affordability is a key advantage of LCC Online. Students pay the same low tuition rates as the College’s traditional programs, and when paired with federal financial aid and scholarship programs such as the LCC Guarantee, many students pay little to nothing out of pocket for their education.

With classes starting every eight weeks, LCC Online students have the flexibility to begin their studies throughout the year. They also receive full support services— including academic advising, tutoring, career assistance, and more—ensuring the same student-centered experience as LCC’s traditional programs.

Popular online programs include Accounting, Information Technology, Criminal Justice, and Business Administration, among many others. Students can apply, be accepted, and access advising entirely online, making it easier than ever to start or complete a degree.

BY THE NUMBERS

CREDENTIALS AWARDED

AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE

DALLAS HERRING AWARD

Lenoir Community College student Alejandro Gonzalez Bautista was named as LCC’s Dallas Herring Award recipient for 2025. The Dallas Herring Award was established by the North Carolina Community College System to honor the late Dr. Dallas Herring, one of the state’s earliest advocates of community colleges. The award is bestowed annually upon a student who best embodies Dr. Herring’s philosophy of “taking people where they are and carrying them as far as they can go.”

Alex certainly exemplifies that belief in both his journey and his determination to succeed. He left high school during the pandemic and entered the workforce, taking a job as a server at IHOP. There, he quickly stood out—training new employees and building strong communication skills. But Alex knew he wanted more. He returned to school through

LCC’s Transitional and Career Studies Hybrid Program, earning his high school credential in 2023 and immediately setting his sights on college.

With support from the WIOA program, Alex enrolled in LCC’s Criminal Justice Technology program and hit the ground running. He earned a perfect 4.0 GPA his first semester while taking 17 credit hours and has maintained straight A’s ever since. He is heading to UNC-Wilmington this fall to study political science and from there, he aspires to attend law school.

While at LCC, Alex was also involved in campus life—serving as president of the NextGen Club, a senator in the Student Government Association, and working on special projects for the College through a paid work-based learning experience. He was a member of Phi Theta Kappa and consistently made the President’s Honor Roll.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AWARD

Hayden Stroud was selected as Lenoir Community College’s Academic Excellence Award recipient for 2025. The Academic Excellence award is presented annually to a currently enrolled student who demonstrates dedication to their educational goals in an associate degree program and maintains a cumulative grade point average of a 3.25 or higher.

Stroud has gone above and beyond—earning a perfect 4.0 GPA while being one of Lenoir Community College’s first LEAP scholarship recipients. Hayden began her journey at LCC

while still in high school, taking college courses that challenged her academically and helped her develop strong time management and study skills.

With aspirations of becoming an elementary school teacher, Hayden has made the most of her time at LCC. Thanks to the LEAP program, she has been able to pursue her education without financial burden, and has built a strong foundation for success—one that will serve her well as she transitions to East Carolina University and continues her journey toward the classroom.

Former Lenoir Community College Student Government Association President Jaiden Garrett was recognized as LCC’s recipient of the Governor Robert Scott Leadership Award. Established by the North Carolina Association of Community College Presidents, the Governor Robert Scott Leadership Award recognizes outstanding student leadership and service.

This year’s recipient, Jaiden Garrett, leads by example—and by action. A first-generation college student, Jaiden served as president of the Student Government Association. In that role, he helped shape student life on campus, organized events, and advocated for student needs. Most notably, he worked with student leaders statewide to pass a motion calling for access to mental health professionals at all 58 community colleges.

Jaiden also represented LCC as a student ambassador and a member of the College’s Board of Trustees. He was president of Phi Theta Kappa, was enrolled in the CCURE undergraduate research program at UNC Wilmington, and contributed to college events through the Foundation and Athletics departments. From working donation drives to giving campus tours, Jaiden’s leadership is grounded in service.

After graduating this spring with his Associate in Science degree, Jaiden plans to transfer to East Carolina University to study Exercise Physiology and later pursue a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree.

A NEW STYLISH SPACE FOR COSMETOLOGY EXPANDED UNIVERSITY PARTNERSHIPS

L

enoir Community College marked an exciting milestone on Friday, April 11, with the official opening of its second cosmetology lab on the College’s main campus in Kinston. Students, faculty, staff, and community members gathered to celebrate the continued growth of LCC’s cosmetology program.

The addition of the new lab comes in response to growing enrollment and increased demand for cosmetology courses at LCC. The College offers day, weeknight, and weekend classes to meet a wide range of student needs.

“This lab represents more than just a physical expansion—it’s a symbol of the creativity, talent, and passion that fills our classrooms every day,” said LCC President Dr. Rusty Hunt. “We’re proud to support our students with the tools and training they need to succeed in a growing industry.”

Cosmetology Program Director Miriam Del Toro-Gutierrez shared her excitement about the opportunities the new space will bring. “This space gives our students the chance to learn in a real-world environment that mirrors the professional settings they’ll enter after graduation,” she said. “It’s a beautiful and functional space designed with their future in mind.”

Lenoir Community College strengthened its transfer pathways this year by signing new agreements with Appalachian State University and North Carolina Wesleyan University, creating more opportunities for students to continue their education with confidence.

Through the Aspire Appalachian Pathway Program, LCC students who complete an Associate in Arts, Science, or approved Applied Science degree are guaranteed admission to App State. Participants also benefit from dedicated ASU advising while at LCC, early access to transfer events, and priority consideration for scholarships.

The agreement with North Carolina Wesleyan University through the Wesleyan Works program also guarantees admission for LCC graduates who complete AA, AS, or AAS degrees. Students gain access to advising, financial aid counseling, and campus events at NCWU while still enrolled at LCC, ensuring a seamless transition to bachelor’s degree completion.

In addition, LCC partnered with UNCW’s Watson College of Education on a new initiative that creates a pathway for aspiring high school teachers, reflecting a shared commitment to preparing the next generation of educators.

Together, these partnerships expand opportunities for LCC students and reinforce the College’s mission of opening doors to higher education across North Carolina.

AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE: CLEARED FOR TAKEOFF

L

ast fall, LCC reached a major milestone in aviation education when the College received Federal Aviation Administration certification for its airframe maintenance program. The achievement opened the door for comprehensive training in general aviation maintenance, immediately drawing a full inaugural class and a waitlist of eager students.

Housed in the Aerospace and Advanced Manufacturing Center, the program combines classroom instruction with hands-on training in an outdoor laboratory and hangar equipped with three aircraft. Students learn everything from the physics of aviation and electrical systems to inspection techniques and ground operations, preparing them for high-demand, high-wage careers in the aviation industry.

Looking ahead, the program is set to expand into the new Senator Jim Perry Aviation Center for Excellence, a state-of-the-art facility that will serve as the permanent home for LCC’s aviation programs. This achievement marks not only the official launch of the next phase in aviation education at LCC but also a strong commitment to fueling the region’s workforce and economy.

GOING THE DISTANCE

For many students, the Greene County Center’s welding program is worth the drive. Taylor Lowry, an 18-year-old from Chesapeake, Virginia, travels nearly three hours twice a week to pursue her goal of becoming a welding inspector. She credits instructor Justin Harvell’s hands-on teaching style for her progress, saying, “He really explains everything well and is always willing to help.”

The program also attracts students like Leonardo and Damian Vega of Raleigh, full-time electricians who make the weekly commute to refine their TIG pipe welding skills. “Every single time I leave, I’m looking forward to the next class,” Damian said.

While students come from outside the region, the Greene County Center also serves local residents across Greene, Jones, and Lenoir counties. Recently refurbished welding facilities and flexible, self-paced courses give students the opportunity to master new skills or bring their own projects to life.

“The welding program is a testament to how LCC meets the needs of our community while also attracting students from beyond,” said Dr. John Paul Black, Senior Vice President of Economic and Workforce Development. “It’s exciting to see how people are willing to go the extra mile— literally—to be part of what we offer.”

FOUNDATION DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE

At the Lenoir Community College Foundation, our mission is more than a statement. It is a promise to support students, faculty, and staff with financial assistance that opens doors to opportunity and transforms lives. Guided by a dedicated board of twenty-two community leaders from Lenoir, Greene, and Jones Counties, the Foundation ensures that every decision we make reflects the needs and aspirations of our community.

OCCUPATIONAL EXTENSION

SPECIALIST –LA GRANGE CENTER

Unlike many organizations, the LCC Foundation receives no state or federal funding. Instead, we exist to promote and strengthen the academic, cultural, and enrichment programs of Lenoir Community College through private gifts. This private support is not just a contribution; it is a catalyst for excellence, empowering LCC to go beyond the essentials funded by the state and achieve new levels of innovation and opportunity.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the Foundation awarded more than $539,000 in scholarships this year, enabling deserving students the opportunity to begin or continue their educational journey. One hundred percent of every gift is used for the purpose designated by the donor, ensuring a direct and meaningful impact. In addition, the Foundation supported academic programs and workforce development, sustained the arts, expanded athletic opportunities, and strengthened community connections. Our Performing Arts Series delighted audiences with performances such as Hello Dolly!, Lancer Big Band, Broadway Unleashed, and Anastasia—enriching the cultural life of our region.

Donors to the Foundation have the flexibility to shape their giving in ways that align with their

passions. Opportunities include endowed and annual scholarships, workforce development and academic support, the LCC Guarantee Fund for outstanding local students, memorial and honorary gifts, equipment and technology support, and the Athletics Fund. Each of these avenues provides unique and lasting benefits, ensuring that every contribution is an investment in the future of our students and community.

The need for private support has never been greater. Rapid changes in technology, evolving workforce demands, and the financial challenges faced by students necessitate that we continue to bridge the gap between what is possible and what is achievable.

With your help, LCC can provide not only access to education but also excellence, innovation, and hope for a brighter tomorrow.

On behalf of the students, faculty, and staff, thank you for your generosity and commitment to Lenoir Community College. Your gifts are changing lives, strengthening our community, and ensuring that opportunity is within reach for all.

Together, we are investing in futures and building a stronger tomorrow.

NURSING LABS NAMED FOR UNC HEALTH LENOIR

L CC celebrated the naming of two nursing labs in honor of UNC Health Lenoir, marking a milestone in the growing partnership between the College and the local healthcare system. The collaboration also launched a new scholarship program that provides selected nursing students with $7,000 and a monthly stipend to ease financial barriers and support their training. Six students make up the inaugural cohort, benefiting from this investment in both their education and the region’s healthcare workforce.

College President Dr. Rusty Hunt called the partnership “a great opportunity to grow our own talent locally,” while UNC Health Lenoir President and CEO Dr. Crystal Hayden emphasized the impact of preparing skilled, compassionate caregivers for the community. Together, these efforts ensure that aspiring nurses can focus on their studies while building the critical skills needed to meet local healthcare demands.

By naming the labs and funding scholarships, UNC Health Lenoir has strengthened its bond with LCC and reinforced a shared commitment to advancing healthcare education and access across Lenoir County.

RADIOGRAPHY LAB DEDICATED TO CASWELL CENTER FOUNDATION

L CC dedicated its Radiography Lab in honor of the Caswell Center Foundation, celebrating a partnership that has long supported healthcare education. A recent gift from the Caswell Center Foundation to the LCC Foundation will provide scholarships for students pursuing careers in healthcare, an investment that President Dr. Rusty Hunt described as “life-changing.”

Outgoing Caswell Center Foundation chair Danny Rice and Dean of Health Sciences and Nursing Dr. Alexis Welch both highlighted the impact of the collaboration—not only in scholarships, but also through the Caswell Center’s role as a clinical training site. Together, the Caswell Center Foundation and LCC continue to prepare the next generation of compassionate, skilled healthcare professionals for eastern North Carolina.

“Those who sponsor our scholarships may not realize it, but they are turning dreams into reality, and I will forever be grateful. I am actively endeavoring to become a nurse and live in service to my local and global community.”
