INTRODUCTION TO MOTION GRAPHICS

Course Description

This course offers a comprehensive introduction to the creative and technical processes of motion graphic design, focusing on the use of motion graphics / animation softwares. Students will explore the fundamental principles of motion, keyframe animation, and video composition, while also developing skills in storytelling through dynamic visual design. The course emphasizes both industry standard techniques and experimental approaches to animated content for contemporary media platforms

Course Objectives

The course aims to equip students with a foundational and practical understanding of motion design through hands-on engagement with visual storytelling and animation. Students will learn to apply key animation principles, and develop design workflows suitable for professional environments.

Course Learning Outcomes

· Demonstrate a working knowledge of the 12 Principles of Animation in a motion design context.

· Create animated compositions, including keyframe animation and visual effects.

· Design and animate text, images, and graphics using layer-based workflows.

· Apply parallax and pseudo-3D techniques to create depth and movement.

· Create rhythmic and expressive kinetic typography synchronized with audio.

PROJECT 01: Animated Poster For Short Movies

Duration: 2-3 Weeks

Goal: Transform a static poster into a motion piece that enhances its core message and visual energy.

Brief: This project introduces motion as a storytelling and hierarchy tool. Students will design a static poster and bring it to life using motion techniques that emphasize pacing, clarity, and visual interest.

The challenge is not to simply “animate for the sake of movement,” but to enhance the core message of the poster by carefully orchestrated transitions, reveals, and hierarchy shifts. The poster should still communicate its main message clearly, perhaps even more powerfully, once it becomes dynamic.

The animation must work as a short loop or intro-style video suitable for Instagram, digital signage, or digital festival screens.

Core Techniques:

· Keyframe animation (position, scale, rotation, opacity)

· Easing: speed curves, bounce, overshoot

· Graph editor for timing finesse

· Hierarchical sequencing (foreground vs background flow)

· Composition prep for looping (beginning = end)

PROJECT 02: Logo Animation

Duration: 2-3 Weeks

Goal: Create a short animated logo reveal that supports the brand identity and leaves a strong impression on digital viewers.

Brief:

In today’s media environments, a logo moves, reveals itself, asserts its personality. In this project, students will animate an existing logo (their own or one assigned) to create a 5–10 second animated intro or outro. The animation must embody the brand’s tone: is it serious, corporate, experimental, playful, mysterious? Through smart transitions, dynamic layering, and pacing, the logo should feel alive and intentional.

Creative Considerations:

· Should the logo build from parts or be revealed all at once?

· Does the animation reflect brand personality? (luxury vs punk vs minimal)

· Will effects like glow, blur, or distortion elevate or distract?

Core Techniques:

· Shape layer animation

· Mask reveals and transitions

· Anchor point choreography for modular builds

· Precomposition and clean fade effects

· Motion blur, ease, bounce, flicker, and scale control

· Optional: sound effects or background texture integration

PROJECT 01: Animating a Painting: Parallax and Puppet Pin Tool

Duration: 3 Weeks

Goal: Add motion and expressive realism to still images through layered parallax and puppet pin distortion.

Brief:

This project explores how static art can be made dynamic using depth simulation and organic movement. Students will select a painting, photograph, or illustrated scene and break it into 2D layers. These layers will be imported into the animation software and animated using 3D camera movement, simulating spatial depth.

To go beyond “camera tricks,” students will apply the Puppet Pin Tool to selected parts of the artwork, flowing cloth, trees, faces, smoke, animals, limbs, adding secondary, realistic motion that mimics breathing, swaying, or twitching.

This project asks: How can subtle movement evoke mood or tell a story?

Creative Considerations:

· What parts of the image should stay still, and what should move?

· How can depth layering affect emotional tone?

· Can you direct attention without losing visual harmony?

Core Techniques:

· Layer separation and prep

· Camera setup with 3D layer control

· Depth of field, blur, and lighting for realism

· Puppet Pin Tool for mesh distortion and organic secondary motion

· Nested comps, null objects, camera parenting

· Optional: fog, particles, light rays, and parallax lighting

PROJECT 04: Kinetic Typography

Duration: 3-4 Weeks

Goal: Animate text in sync with audio to create emotional, narrative, and rhythmic resonance using kinetic typography.

Brief: Words alone convey meaning, but words in motion can amplify emotion, tempo, tension, and personality. In this final project, students will choose an audio segment (30-45 seconds) and create an expressive kinetic typography piece where type and sound become inseparable. The text should mirror, contradict, or heighten the audio, visually reflecting dynamics such as shouting, whispering, glitching, stuttering, or pausing. Font choices, spacing, and transitions should not only follow the beat but tell a visual story in rhythm.

Creative Considerations:

· Will the text appear word-by-word or phrase-by-phrase?

· Should type be minimal, brutalist, surreal, humorous, or chaotic?

· Does the layout shift with emotional tone?

Core Techniques:

· Audio waveform syncing + time remapping

· Text animator controls (tracking, scale, rotation, opacity)

· Expression tools for beat syncing or randomization

· Color timing, camera movement, and transition choreography

· Optional: bounce, echo, blur, time-based distortion

· Use of silence and negative space for dramatic pacing
