Disney a force for toy sales Top global licenses dominate in 2015 THE force was strong within the toy industry this Christmas, as sales of Star Wars licensed toys soared throughout the festive period - but Frozen still remained the UK’s hottest license. After 10 years without a new entry in the hit cinematic space saga, the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens saw sales for the license more than double versus 2014, according to NPD. The global information group’s findings also revealed that

EU gets thumbs up 76 per cent of toy industry will vote to stay in Europe

Disney held a dominating position at the top of the licensed toy sales charts. A “very strong finish” in 2015 for Star Wars saw it end the year as the second largest property in the UK, beaten only by the entertainment giant’s other global hit, Frozen. Chief among the best selling Star Wars toys was LEGO’s Millennium Falcon.

band Union J will be at Toy Fair tomorrow from 12.30pm – so keep an eye out for him. Celebrity cook Annabel Karmel, the author of books on nutrition and cooking for babies, is also going to be at the show on the Casdon stand.

STAYING in the EU is a good idea according to a Toys ’n’ Playthings survey run this month. A whopping 76 per cent said they will vote yes, although there are mixed feelings on the matter. Just 24 per cent of the respondents said they would be in the exit camp for the referendum that’s been promised to the British people for next year – and that fell to 14 per cent who believe membership of the EU hinders their business. One proEU respondent outlined the differences between working with businesses around the world: “Around 20 per cent of our turnover is with customers from other EU countries. We do export to some non-EU countries but it is much more difficult and costly to do so. A second one said: “Safety legislation has made life more difficult for the crooks and incompetents. The European Free Trade Area has enabled freer movement of goods, benefiting consumers of our products.” However, a respondent from the Exit Camp said: “The EU hinders my business with inconsistent application of IP rights, and inconsistent food and toy safety standards.”

NEWS Welcome to Toy Fair A special welcome to Toy Fair visitors and exhibitors from the Toy Fair Chairman Jon Diver. It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Olympia for the 63rd annual Toy Fair. Firstly, I’d like to share with you my gratitude for supporting Toy Fair in this challenging year and my thanks to Majen Immink and the team at the British Toy and Hobby Association for creating the fantastic show that lies ahead. I know the whole team has put a lot of hard work into Toy Fair run as smoothly as possible and I’d like to personally say thank you to all involved. Over the next three days more than 270 exhibiting companies, ranging from large internationals to new start-up companies, will be showcasing thousands of brand new product launches, with 73 new companies joining the fair for 2016. This year also marks Toy Fair’s largest ever Greenhouse Area with 42 exhibitors. I urge you to take time out of your schedule to visit the Greenhouse Area as it plays a vital role in launching many new companies into the toy industry. The ever popular Toy Fair TV returns for its fourth year and will, once again, be hosted by Anna Williamson and Gavin Inskip. Make sure to look out for screens around Olympia broadcasting the channel or if you get the chance, head up to the Toy Fair TV studio on the gallery level to see the Demo Zone being filmed live. But of course, you are here first and foremost to see the toys, games and hobbies being launched at the fair for 2016 and beyond. Toy Fair Best New Toy Award winners are displayed outside the press office on the balcony and rest assured you will not be disappointed by the thousands of innovative, creative and inventive products that you’ll discover throughout the halls over the next three days. I would like to take this opportunity to confirm that Toy Fair moves back to its usual pattern in 2017 running from Tuesday 24th to Thursday 26th January 2017. On behalf of Toy Fair and the BTHA may I wish you all a happy, healthy and prosperous 2016. Enjoy the show!

Stand Gallery 120 How excited are you about the 2016 Toy Fair? This is definitely the most excited I’ve been heading into any Toy Fair and that says something considering I’ve been involved in the toy market since 2004. Toy Fair provides the ideal launch pad for our exciting new ranges and brings together the very best of the industry in terms of innovation and new product design.

What are your new product launches for the show and how many do you have? We have so much to talk about this year in terms of new products and we’re literally introducing new products across all our lines. In fact, we have so much to shout about we’ll be supporting our new toy ranges from August and into the lead up to Christmas this year with an exciting TV advertising campaign, so watch this space!

What licences have got you going for 2016? Building on the success of the existing range, we will triple our Disney licensed offering with the introduction of new Disney Baby and Disney Princess lines, including a collection of soft textile princess dolls, which also signals a move into the plush sector for Chicco. In addition to our Disney Princess licensed toys, we are still experiencing phenomenal success with our Fiat 500 branded toys. In particular, the Fiat 500 R/C car regularly appears in the top 10 best-

seller lists for radio-controlled cars and has proved to be a massive hit with both children and adults alike.

70 years of a family affair Role play has paid off for family firm Casdon which is celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2016. The landmark celebration for the pre-school and role-play specialist marks 28 April 1946, which was when founder Tom Cassidy left his day job and set out on his own. A true family firm, brothers Phil and Pete Cassidy are now at the helm along with their father Paul. The use of household names such as Dyson, Henry and Kenwood, mixed with generic toy home appliances, shop sets and toolboxes, has built a huge collection that kids love, and their parents and grandparents trust. Chairman Paul said: “Seventy years is a long time for any company and Casdon has certainly seen some changes in its time. One thing that has stayed constant however, is the family bond and the drive to produce great toys. “Together we have had the pleasure of working in a great industry and creating toys that we know young children want to play with.”

Mothercare interview

Fisher-Price Bing Talking Bing

Mother knows best With freshly-designed toy shop areas rolling out in stores across the UK, Mothercare Group is upping its toy retail game. Claire Loxley, Head of Buying & Product Development for ELC and Mothercare, sat down to discuss boosting branded toys in-store, best sellers, learning through play and, of course, Toy Fair Thanks for talking to us Claire, tell us your toy industry story so far. I’ve been in the toy industry for 12 years. My first buying job was at Mothercare on the nursery area, from there I joined Hamleys as Pre-School Toy Buyer, and then went on to head up the development of the Hamleys Private Label ranges. After a great five years at Hamleys, I moved on to join the Early Learning Centre buying team here at Mothercare HQ as Senior Buyer on Girls’ Toys and really got to grips with the exciting world of design and product development. Two years ago I was promoted into my current role of heading up the buying and product design teams for both the Early Learning Centre and Mothercare brands.

What toys are currently selling in their droves for you? For our ELC own brand, the best-selling range is HappyLand, followed closely by our developmental core Baby & Toddler range. We also remain very strong with our range of Home & Shopping, and our Big City road and rail segment. For brands, our current top three performers are VTech, Fisher-Price and SmarTrike. Which categories are generally your best sellers, and what is your target age range? Baby and toddler is our absolute core age range, however we are also very strong within certain segments aimed at three to six-year-olds. We do very well when we focus on what our customers

Mothercare interview expect from ELC and Mothercare as a retailer: quality, play value and product specialism. We have classic products that have become iconic within our range and these continue to sell all around the world year after year. How important are toys to your overall total sales, and is this in growth? Toys contribute a significant part of Mothercare Group’s turnover, which is obviously accentuated in the Christmas season. Performance has been really positive with particular highlights in our fantastic refurbished stores and our direct channel. You had a strong Christmas in the UK. Do you think consumer confidence is back and holding firm? I think consumer confidence is back, however, the UK toy consumer is savvier then ever! We know the majority of mums shop with Mothercare, so we’ve been busy creating an in-store environment whereby the ELC Toy Shop is an integral part of a one-stop shop for parents and young children.

Online sales were a big part of that, up 11.8% Do you think 2015 is the year retailers truly embrace multichannel? Mothercare as a business has been doing very well online for some time now. We have been focusing on creating a seamless shopping experience whether you are shopping on the web, in store or with a staff member on an iPad.

“

WE HAVE NOW TAKEN A CONSCIOUS DECISION TO GIVE OUR BRANDED OFFER MORE IMPACT, TO COMPLEMENT THE ELC AND MOTHERCARE RANGES

Do certain toys sell better online than in-store, and do you take that into account when making buying decisions? Yes definitely. We have quite a few products now that will perform significantly better online, especially those that are large or heavy to carry from a store.

What draws you to a toy initially when sourcing new product? Developmental benefits are hugely important, but it also has to be commercial and appealing in terms of price point and aesthetics, otherwise the consumer simply won’t buy into it.

”

Tell us about your Time To Play And Learn buying guide/campaign online. Is education and development through play a core tenant of the products you stock? Absolutely. Learning through play is what ELC stands for, and what we strive to deliver through the products we design and the brands that we stock. It has definitely helped boost sales of the products featured in it. VTech Toot-Toot Animals

Is there anything you wouldn’t stock? We don’t stock any kind of toy gun or realisticlooking toy weapons. We will also not stock anything of low quality or with limited play value. Tell us about ELC’s own-brand ranges. Roughly what percentage do you carry as opposed to branded? It’s around 60-40 own brand to branded. We have now taken a conscious decision to give our branded offer more impact, to complement the ELC and Mothercare ranges and provide our customers with a greater width of range.

Mothercare interview Are you on the hunt for anything in particular at Toy Fair this year? Toy Fair is a great opportunity to meet with the majority of our key branded suppliers to discuss the coming year. All of our buyers will be present at the fair and, as well as meeting with our current supply base, we are as ever on the lookout for newness and innovation to add to the ranges for next year. Why is Toy Fair an important event for you? For us, it’s the final stage of seeing all the branded ranges that we may not already have seen at previews, so we can then create a range to sign off for AW16. We make a lot of our buying decisions and finalise planning from our show findings.

Did you know… Mothercare Group has invested heavily in new-look Early Learning Centre toy shop areas, such as the Cribbs Causeway, Bristol store shown here, which opened in November 2015.

The BIG interview

: d n Sta131 E

Master of spinning toys This past year has been a busy one for Hedley Barnes. He was promoted to Spin Master’s Regional General Manager for UK, Germany, Benelux and is ready to face into Toy Fair with a fresh set of eyes Hedley, thanks for taking the time to speak with us. The past year has been an exciting one for you, you were promoted to your new position within Spin Master. How has that been for you? I am very excited to be working closely with the UK team. I have been managing Germany, Italy and Benelux for a few years, but to work daily with the UK guys, our second biggest region after the US, is a great challenge, and something I relish. Tell us a little bit about yourself and your career with Spin Master? I have been at Spin Master five years, and opened their Benelux office. I then managed their offices in Germany and Italy, while living in the Netherlands, before moving back to the UK

18 months ago. Spin Master, some would say is an addictive place, and one where there are plenty of opportunities. With the company going through exciting times, and I look forward to the new chapter in my career here. What were Spin Master’s top three selling products in 2015? We are more brand orientated, so Paw Patrol, Zoomer (from our Pets to Life range), and our flying RC range - Air Hogs. What direction do you hope to steer Spin Master in over the course of 2016? The UK has been managed by Kevin Jones so successfully over the past 10 years. Last year we

The BIG interview Did you know… In 2015, Paw Patrol became the biggest new toy property reported in NPD with retail sales close to £19m. 2016 is expected to be its breakout year. just hit the Top 10 NPD companies, and in 2016 we are firmly in the position to climb up further. Talk to us about your range at Toy Fair – what can retailers and buyers expect to see on the stand? Spin Master is known for its highly innovative toys, like our Meccanoid last year. This year our stand will surpass even last year, with amazing new concepts in our Robotics range, our Meccano line, strong licensed ranges (The Secret Life of Pets, Angry Birds, Thunderbirds, Batman V Superman, Noddy etc) and of course an awesome line up of new items for Paw Patrol.

There was one brand name in particular on consumers’ lips over Q4 2015 – Paw Patrol. What are sales figures like for you on that line? We are very lucky that this brand is extremely strong for us right now. In 2015, it became the biggest new toy property reported in NPD with retail sales close to £19m. 2016 is expected to be its breakout year.

“

SPIN MASTER IS KNOWN FOR ITS HIGHLY INNOVATIVE TOYS, LIKE OUR MECCANOID LAST YEAR. THIS YEAR OUR STAND WILL SURPASS EVEN LAST YEAR

It was so popular there were a few grumblings about retailers not being able to get their hands on stock. Is this something Spin Master has rectified now? As with all toy brands that become hot trends – forecasting them accurately four or five months beforehand is an almost impossible feat! It’s safe to say that we have planned significant growth for 2016. What will be new from that range in 2016? We have new themes on TV; the Air theme is the main one in Season 3 of the show. We have a very

cool item called the Air Patroller which is the perfect pre-school Air vehicle! Also watch out for our robotic Zoomer Marshall, it is truly innovative!

Kinetic Sand has proved hugely popular too – what are sales figures like here and how are Spin Master upping the ante on the range? What more can you do with sand?! Kinetic Sand again took us a little by storm last year. The line was kept tight, yet we sold out of our key TV line very early. So the true potential wasn’t realised. This year we are extending the range with more themed playsets, licensed ranges from Disney, and a range called Kinetic Sand Build, where the sand is still Kinetic, but it holds it form when moulded. Great stuff! Lets talk about some of Spin Master’s licensed ranges – what else can visitors expect to see on your stand? As mentioned, we have the master toys for The Secret Life of Pets from the makers

of Minions, Angry Birds The Movie, Noddy which is based on the new series from DreamWorks, and Popples a Netflix production, based on a hit trend in the ‘80s!. In addition we have recently bought Cardinal Games which includes Disney, Turtles & Paw Patrol licenses and a super range of generic Games and Puzzles. Meccano is another perennial favourite with kids, how do you plan to elevate the build experience in 2016? We have made massive improvements to this brand in the last 18 months. The build designs are now very cool, aspirational and modern. In addition we have improved the instructions, the build experience and the materials used. Lastly

Did you know… The Spin Master team unwind after Toy Fair with couple of team beers but given it’s an important time of year, they make sure they head to bed early too!

2015 launched our Meccano Tech line and this is extended in 2016 with programmable Dinosaurs, Micro Robots, and the evolution of the Meccanoid. Meccano is really being fully upgraded and modernised for years to come so in reality we are at the start of the journey. Talk to us about Spin Master’s relationship independent retailers – how do you support them? Actually our business with the independent trade has grown faster than our mass market in 2015. This has been led by our sales team (thanks to Sarah Hunt!) who has championed them and invested a huge amount of time with the relevant buying groups. We thank them enormously for their support and are committed to continue this program in 2016. We really value this business and will continue to listen to what is needed to help differentiate, support and grow this channel.

We asked… Why is London Toy Fair so important to Spin Master? It is a key time for us to be able to focus 100 per cent on the UK trade and the UK priorities. All our other fairs are multinational, but this one can be set up and made to be 100 per cent purpose built for the UK trade. It is the only fair where all our UK team attends, and where we can see all the independent toy trade in the same venue.

Maisto etc. Mostly sports cars such as Porsche, Lamborghini, Maserati and Aston Martin. I used to play for hours racing them around the floor… wearing thin the knees on all my trousers! I loved being the driver and to owning these dream cars. I am still waiting to own a real one and I will indeed look to own a model similar to one that I played with as a toy in my younger years!

What is your own personal favourite product from Spin Master’s range and why? In 2015, I loved the Meccanoid. As a guy who grew up with Meccano it appeals to the geek in me! However, the wide age range that Kinetic Sand appeals to and the therapeutic nature of it when you play with it, means that it probably was my most used product!! And finally, what was your favourite toy when you were a child and why did it leave such a lasting memory with you? I was, and still am, a car guy! I collected the 1:32 and the 1:64 range of licensed cars. Matchbox,

Licensee Spotlight Stand: D89

Talking posh With some of the hottest licenses in town, Posh Paws are a busy bunch. Group Brand Manager Lauren Shipman made time for the Daily News to fill us in on what has been happening at the company Lauren, thanks for talking to us. Sum up the past year for Posh Paws?

What is Posh Paws approach to Toy Fair this year? We love the Toy Fair, it is an exciting start to the year and great opportunity to launch and showcase all of our fantastic new licensed ranges. We have so much this year, I just hope I can fit it all on the stand!

Busy! 2015 was even better than expected, we anticipated growth off the back of some key product launches such as Star Wars, Tsum Tsum and The Good Dinosaur. But at year end we reported a 50% increase in sales against 2014 which was a phenomenal result. Whilst these brands certainly helped sales to rise, it was not solely down to the newly launched product but the continued success of brands such as Minions, Frozen and Care Bears.

Who can visitors expect to meet on your stand? We will have our lovely National Account Managers – Mandy Warburton, David Roberts and Mark Standen, as well as Posh Paws regional agents showing their local customers around.

What key licenses can retailers expect to see from Posh Paws at London Toy Fair?

Which license performed well for you in 2015?

We, of course, have a fantastic array of new Disney plush to launch at the show, with soft toys for upcoming movies and TV shows such as Zootropolis, Finding Dory, Lion Guard and The Jungle Book. We also have a gorgeous new Nursery Dumbo range that we will be launching at the show, as well as some fantastic bag designs across our backpack brands – Secret Life of Pets, Thunderbirds and Minions to name a few.

Both Star Wars and Frozen were level pegging for us in 2015.

While Posh Paws is renowned for plush – that’s not all you are about is it? Tell us about some of the company’s other ranges. We have quickly made a name me for ourselves in the backpack category, ategory, we’re currently manufacturing ng product for most of the UK major license holders from ITV and d Disney, to Cbeebies and Universal. Brands in our range now include: Minions, inions, Thunderbirds, Furchester Hotel, otel, Care Bears, Minnie, Mickey, Star Wars, Cinderella, Winnie the Pooh and brand new property The Secret Life fe of Pets.

How would you sum up your approach to working with with licensors – what makes them choose you over others? In general I believe we have good product in both the plush and backpack categories, we have shown what we can do and have had success in retail with a number of high profile brands.

You do a lot of work with Disney in particular, talk to us about your relationship with them? We have been working with Disney for six years now and over this time we have built up a really strong relationship. We work very cohesively with the product development team which means we are able to deliver great product out to retail.

Talk to us about your relationship with retailers, how do you help them to sell more? We work closely with retailers to design promotions and POS to suit their particular needs. We do not have a one size fit all approach but work with buyers on strategies thatt ar a are e specific to their stores.

Showing off the brand Stand B121

We asked... John McDonnell, Managing Director, Galt Toys, Stand: E9 What can we all do as an industry to ensure this winning streak continues in 2016? The toy industry needs innovation at its core to succeed. Investment in product development from all toy companies will keep the market competitive and give consumers a variety of choice when it comes to toys and games, so it’s a win-win. Listening to feedback from parents is also key. This year Galt Toys launches the new Two-In-One Playnest for that very reason. Parents wanted a Playnest with a comfortable rest and play area for their child from birth, giving the product longevity and added value, so we developed our original award-winning Playnest to do just that.

Retailers have their first chance to view Schleich’s new in-store branding created for its 2016 collections on the company’s Toy Fair stand. To increase brand awareness among UK consumers, 2016 will see development of the new key visuals running across POS and packaging as well as the trade and consumer brochures. The objective is to provide shopper guidance and navigation in store as well as to increase an emotional connection to the brand. All Schleich customers are eligible to receive the versatile and eye-catching POS material, together with support and advice from the team about how to make the best use of their space. Laura Bull, Schleich’s UK Marketing Manager, nager, comments: “The new point of sale materials are the perfect way to attract existing xisting Schleich fans, while actively encouraging new collectors and we’re really looking forward orward to seeing the new branding in stores in the second half of this year. “With much more imagery and new colouring, louring, this new POS ensures the brand is seen at its best.”

New To Toy Fair Gallery 540

In form Magformers have made quite an impact on the UK toy trade since they entered the market in 2015. The Daily News caught up with the company’s new MD David Kelly to find out which direction he will be steering the company as they gets to grips with the retail scene Dave, this is Magformers first year at Toy Fair – what made you decide to exhibit? There is always a real buzz of excitement around the Toy Fair. So for Magformers UK this is really the first opportunity from which to tell our full story and introduce the vast range of products behind the brand. Although we started selling into the UK last year, I would say that was a low-key launch and the Toy Fair really is the official launch of Magformers in the UK.

How has Magformers been received in the UK market so far? There has been some great early success stories. Feedback from our best retailers is that sell-through is fantastic when the product is presented properly in-store. There’s also been a lot of warmth from retailers because they want to see a resurgence in the magnetic construction toy category and they believe Magformers will achieve that because of its innovation and impeccable safety record. What makes the Magformers brand different? Magformers are very easy to use, even from

Did you

an early, pre-school age. The builds that children can make are amazing, but very easy to follow by using the Magformers pieces, which are uniquely designed. The geometric shapes always connect however two pieces are brought together, they never repel. This gives children the chance to connect shapes in any direction and the pieces will always connect and fit together, unlike any other system. What’s your approach to communicating with retailers? It’s still very early days for Magformers so initially there’s been a lot of direct sales and marketing contact to inform retailers that Magformers sits in so many different categories within the toy industry. We’re magnetic, we’re a construction toy, we have a strong educational aspect, we have a scientific and mathematic angle, we have building sets that range from those suitable for pre-schoolers right up to preteens. We’ve put an advertising and PR plan in place, will be broadcasting a regular email newsletter to the trade and we’re looking at TV advertising later in the year. How have you and the Magformers team tackled coming into the UK toy market? The magnetic construction toy category has been successful for retailers in the past and our high build quality, coupled with the fact we appeal to every age from toddlers upwards, means Magformers offers a very strong retail proposition. That’s been a driving factor so

far. While we are a great new brand, with a unique story to tell and fantastic new products, we’re not attempting to create a brand new market - but we can certainly re-invigorate an existing one. To be honest, the real challenges have been more operational and logistical - starting a business from scratch takes time and presents numerous hurdles. For example, just before Christmas containers of our own product were held at customs while trading standards officers searched for unsafe hoverboards. That was frustrating for us and our to drop by customers.

know…

every o rder pla ced at T will qua oy Fair lify for a set, plus free Ma gforme an extra rs discoun t off inv oice.

Three reasons… the Magformers stand at Toy Fair 2016

Will you have all of your range on display at Toy Fair? Yes, we will be showing all the UK available stock, including 15 products new to the UK and 14 brand new global lines which have never been seen before. There are some really exciting new products from our ‘My First Line’ which introduce all the fun of Magformers to toddlers and feature bright pieces and instantly recognisable simple 3D models to build - like butterflies, cars, birds, planes and so on.

1. To see the exciting Magformers live demo shows. They are running three building demonstrations a day at 11am, 1pm and 3pm with a team specially flown in from Korea. 2. To see the full 2016 range of course, especially the new Walking Robots and Walking Dinosaurs sets. 3. To find out more about the biggest selling magnetic construction toy in Korea, Russia and soon, the UK.

Nikki Austen, Head of Insight and Strategy, Webb deVlam talks to the Daily News about the challenge and opportunity for brands and marketers Online retail is predicted to amount to 18% of all grocery transactions by 2019, so the challenge for marketers is to start designing products that stand out in the four inches of space available on a mobile device, instead of 20,000 square feet available in the supermarket shop floor. Attracting attention quickly is always top of the priority list for brands, but online retail brings its own challenges in terms of how to make products stand out and catch the eye of potential customers. Not granted the luxury of the few seconds it takes consumers to walk past a product on a shelf, brands must now create products that pop on screen, a fact which clearly affects a number of design decisions including shape and form, iconography, colours, messaging and information hierarchy. Online retail offer consumers speed and convenience, but it’s also vital to remember that the wider online landscape means they are only a click away from competitors, reviews and comparison sites. As such, they can be influenced to switch retailers or abandon purchase in a second, so it’s crucial to make an immediate impact. Simplicity is key when designing for the online space. It’s vital to focus on delivering the most compelling benefits, using design codes and semiotics to create a connection and make a rapid and lasting impression. Marketers need to ensure that they have a branding strategy in place that caters for all environments. It’s no longer enough to design a product that stands out on the shelf, and yet it would be short-sighted to cater only for the online space. What brands need to do now is bring together brand identity, design and marketing to deliver powerful, recognisable messages that resonate with their target audiences across all customer touchpoints and channels.

Stand: E46 How excited are you about the 2016 Toy Fair?

What’s your personal hero product from the range?

Very excited! I really look forward to Toy Fair each year and, with this being my first one with Jumbo, I can’t wait to show everyone our range.

That’s a hard one to narrow down, so I’ve gone for two. The launch of our Peppa Pig and George Pig 3D Foam Puzzles launching in June and our collectable DINO 3D Puzzles that have just launched – let’s be honest, who doesn’t like dinosaurs?

What are your new product launches for the show and how many do you have? We’ve got more than 95 new products launching at the show across our adult and children’s ranges, which is fantastic for us and our customers! This year we’re releasing over 40 new Falcon De Luxe jigsaw puzzles to celebrate its 40th anniversary, so we’re very excited to be releasing so many puzzles across varying piece counts from 200 to 1,500 pieces. We’re also officially launching our brand new DINO range of 3D puzzles & models and new Disney puzzles such as The Lion Guard, The Jungle Book and Zootropolis.

What licences have got you going for 2016? Trying not to be too biased, but we have big expectations for Peppa Pig this year. Bob The Builder also looks to be back with a bang and I’m keen to see the developments throughout the year.

L I A T E R RNER O C with... ith B Bob bB Brinklow i kl Poppy & Zach, Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire

Do you always go to Toy Fair? We are only just two years old so it will be only our second visit. Do you do a lot of buying or planning for the year ahead at the show? We are a start-up so a lot of our stuff is on the fly. We have existing brands that we have already brought on-board but we are on the look out for new markets, new opportunities, new categories, new margin opportunities – all the type of things you would expect from a show. Which stands are you excited about going to? Melissa & Doug in the hope that they have new lines. I will go to LEGO too.

What’s your favourite biscuit – and do you dunk?

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Schleich, Stand: B121 Schleich is 80 years old. A Schleich toy is sold every second. Schleich is sold in over 60 countries worldwide. There are almost 600 lines available. Schleich has a 55 per cent share of the global figurine market.

Anything with chocolate on it and, no way

Did you know? If one day’s production of Hama beads were laid down one after the other, the line would stretch around the world’s equator! DKL, Stand: E66

What is the best thing about Toy Fair? The scale is certainly one aspect of the appeal – the number of exhibitors under one roof. It takes at least two days to get round there properly. It will be interesting to see what is going on.

5 things about…

What’s your favourite brew? It’s nothing to do with where I live, but it’s got to be Yorkshire Tea.

Any licences or products you are really looking forward to seeing? I should think Star Wars. There is a new Frozen film coming out from Disney soon so products associated with that. Minions. We do classic and wooden toys so Le Toy Van is another I will be looking forward to going to see. There is also Sophie la Girafe.

Returning for more success Back at London Toy Fair after seeing success over the previous two shows, Eduk8 Worldwide is looking forward to be launching a great range of new products for 2016. The company has had a lot of interest in many of its products, especially its Belly Bump Balls that were featured on BBC Breakfast. Among the new products is the Premium Trike range – four types of high-quality trikes in trendy white, that are stylish, well built and great value for money. And Eduk8 has some fabulous outdoor toys including its very popular Resistance Parachute – a very large 90cm parachute that’s ideal to encourage children to run and is great outdoors as well as helping children learn about the effects of air resistance.

Making a big noise Make it snappy for your chance to win a Dancing Alligator on LittleConcepts’ stand in the Greenhouse – and you can make a big noise into the bargain. For the UK and Eire distributor is showing the fantastic new 2016 PlanToys products at Toy Fair, along with the Limited Edition Dancing Alligator competition. As PlanToys continues to push innovation culture and sustainable strategy in its new product design process, more than 70 new and redesigned products for 2016 have been announced. After the Table & Chair from the PlanHome collection won the Reddot Award 2015 and The Best Home Decorative Items For Children title from NY NOW, PlanToys is proud to present the Coat Rack and the Wagon in order to expand its flagship collection that marks the exciting journey toward the children’s furniture category. Alongside expanding the PlanHome range, PlanToys has, of course, focussed on its core preschool ranges as well. President of Plan Creations Co Vitool Viraponsavan states: “The biggest release for this year is our Music collection. Additions to this collection include items such as the Rhythm Box, Double Drum, Tambourine and Rain Maker. These all can be combined together to create a band!

The toy trade has had a strong few years by all accounts. What can we all do as an industry to ensure this winning streak continues in 2016? Continue to keep a keen eye on consumer trends, stay ahead in retail by adapting to consumer demands i.e. e-commerce and digital. Be flexible and react quickly to market changes, rather than be complacent. What can retailers do this year to stimulate sales outside of established peak sales periods? Utilise PR spend with strong editorial product placement, invest in strategic and smart digital marketing activity. Additionally, complement any e-marketing by directly engaging with consumers through incentivised footfall activities which WILL give a strong ROI. What product category/sector/license should retailers be taking note of as the next big thing for 2016? Without doubt, the studios once again have a strong lineup of movies across 2016. But we believe all eyes will be on Universal’s Secret Life of Pets, continued appetite for Star Wars and it will be interesting to see how the Roald Dahl centenary celebrations fares across all categories given the investment in the brand. In terms of product category to watch, I’m keeping a keen eye on plush as it sits so well with the many preschool and studio properties that have recently launched or will come to market in 2016.

Greenhouse Interview : d n Sta 40 GH

Giving colour to education You will find Alan Sheridan, Founder of Education Harbour Ltd, in Toy Fair’s Greenhouse section this year. Alan founded the company after being made redundant in 2008, this led to his establishing his own company using his previous experience in the science industry. Know what Rainbow Diffraction Glasses are? Well, pop by his stand to find out!

I started the company after being made, unexpectedly, redundant from a science communication company in late 2008. With a new job not on the horizon I started to think about products needed during my previous role that were a compromise – the Rainbow Diffraction Glasses that I produce now are a result of those thoughts and we have sold them in moderate quantities to the primary school community and to individuals to watch fireworks, go to raves, or place in party bags. This product has been supplemented by other diffraction products for older customers and, in 2015, we had great success with my eclipse glasses that were used by the BBC and sold like

hotcakes – albeit just for one month! The revenue from the Eclipse Glasses has allowed me to produce the opposite product, from a science perspective, to the diffraction glasses – one that takes colours back to white rather than takes white light to colours. The product is called Newton’s Colour Wheel By Education Harbour Ltd and comes in a school pack and a retail pack – it’s the latter I’m exhibiting at Toy Fair and offering to the trade as a great fun toy in addition to being a cool science resource. Retailers will be offered an attractive margin and happy customers with a pocket moneypriced product.

“

THE ORIGINAL RAINBOW GLASSES REMAIN THE BESTSELLING PRODUCT BUT LAST YEAR LOST THEIR NUMBER ONE SLOT TO MY ECLIPSE GLASSES.

”

The sub-brand for the product is under my new Science Meets Magic brand and it’s my intention to grow this with more products that meet this criteria. Since 2008, I’ve not had sufficient turnover to employ anyone and hope that this product will help me to change this – my first employee will be the person who’s helping me man the stand at Toy Fair! I have attended Toy Fair as a visitor while searching for items to bolster the aforementioned science communication service and, to this end, I’ve also attended the Toy Fair in New York. The original Rainbow Glasses remain the bestselling product but last year lost their number one slot to my Eclipse Glasses.

Jeremy Morton, Partner, at Harbottle & Lewis LLP speaks to highlights the pressing issues for intellectual property owners in 2016. January is a time for reflection and plans, while Toy Fair serves to focus the mind on the threat from competitor copycats. Why not make a new year intellectual property resolution? 2016 will see big changes to EU trade marks, beginning in March. First, it will be possible to seize goods transiting the EU, unless they would not infringe in the destination country. So review your protection, including EU Customs registrations. And if you are thinking of filing new trade marks, you could save fees by acting now: currently the ¤900 fee covers three classes of goods, whereas the new regime has a separate fee for each. If you register your mark, say, for games, printed matter and electric toothbrushes, you will soon have to pay ¤1,050. Note also changes for existing registrations filed by reference only to the class heading (for example, Class 28, “Games and playthings; gymnastic and sporting articles not included in other classes; decorations for Christmas trees”). Such registrations will only cover goods within the literal meaning of that heading, not the wider range of related goods. That means reviewing your existing registrations, as there is an opportunity to broaden them until 24 September. The government is consulting on fee reductions for registering UK designs, to as little as £50. This would be a real incentive. We will also have the Supreme Court decision in the Trunki designs dispute, on whether surface decoration can serve to differentiate the accused product from a registered shape design. Artwork exploited for mass-produced merchandise (for example, toys based on cartoons) will enjoy extended copyright protection, instead of the current 25 years. Be aware that the government controversially proposes to introduce this from 28 April. Finally, the Shorter and Flexible Trials pilot scheme continues in 2016. Alongside the specialist IP Enterprise Court, this offers real options for cost-effective action against infringers. Jeremy Morton is a solicitor who advises in the specialist area of intellectual property law, which includes copyright, brands and patents. www.harbottle.com/jeremy-morton

See sense in Miffy launch An interactive Miffy designed to help children learn about the body is making its UK debut at Toy Fair. Rainbow Designs’ Sensory Miffy is a preschool toy based on the character featured in the successful Tiny Pop series Miffy’s Adventures Big And Small. Pre-schoolers simply touch Sensory Miffy’s hand, foot, tummy, ear, mouth, eye or head and Miffy will name the body part that’s been pressed. Sensory Miffy also plays the theme tune from the CGI-animated Miffy series when the button on her dress is pressed. The 14 interactive sensors help to stimulate pre-schoolers’ touch and hearing senses, and encourage them to learn about the body as they play. Anthony Temple, Rainbow Designs’ Managing Director, said, “Sensory Miffy is a fantastic pre-school product which plays to two strengths – Miffy’s enduring appeal as a pre-school character and the popularity of Tiny Pop’s Miffy series. “We’re delighted to be launching Sensory Miffy at this year’s Toy Fair and we’re confident that retailers, parents and children alike will love this innovative and educational toy.” Retailers and Miffy fans can look forward to more Miffy toys from Rainbow based on the Tiny Pop series launching later this year. Making retail an experience

What can independent toy stores learn from big retailers? Independent toy retailers may not have the same budgets as larger chains but, with a little creativity and love, there are endless ideas that will allow them to build a strong relationship with their customers, says Mariann Wenckheim, director at strategic design consultancy 20.20. The best children’s retailers know that the key to success is being able to engage young customers, as well as their parents, from the moment they step into the store. Interactive features, the chance to play with toys before buying them and a friendly, knowledgeable store team will all appeal to youngsters – and independent toy shops can do this without a big budget behind them. Modern toy stores are all about creative exploration and sparking the imagination with vibrant design and engaging activities. Shopping at a toy store should be an experience both the child and the parent will always remember. Often the simplest ideas are the most engaging. Motion sensors that bring sounds and colours to life. or light up when children run across the shop floor or even personalising products - these are all ideas that make kids and parents want to get involved. At the Early Learning Centre, within the Mothercare store at Manchester’s Fort shopping park, we designed an interactive zone with a hot air balloon

and built a tree where children can pick a book from one of the branches. Meanwhile, at a children’s store in Poland we made a space for kids to design their own jewellery and t-shirts. Children love to experiment with their physical environment but retailers don’t need expensive structures. And nothing stops a retailer from merchandising pocket money toys at a child’s level – another simple way of engaging customers. Excellent customer service is, of course, paramount in the toy and children’s clothing sector. Unlike large, warehouse-style toy shops, independent shops can offer a personal touch, with team members interacting closely with families and letting them try out the toys and games before buying them. Independent retailers may see themselves as being at a disadvantage compared to the big players as they may be limited by

The best children’s retailers know that the key to success is being able to engage young customers

smaller floor space. At the same time, there is no reason why they can’t offer a unique experience, moving away from pure transactions to creating memorable experiences. Just like sportswear shop LuluLemon runs yoga classes in its shops, toy retailers could offer a treasure hunt through a park which leads people back to the store or a pop-up stand at a zoo. With a little imagination, a lot of love, and at minimal cost, anything is possible.

Recreating fun Jonathan Kirkley, Marketing Director at Re:creation Ltd talks to the Daily News about their fantastic year and great product line-up Jonathan, thanks for speaking to us – how was the company’s performance in 2015? It was a positive year for us. We were up seven per cent* on 2014. Special mention must be given to Razor, LEGO Lights and our Snuggables brands which delivered stand-out performances. Razor goes from strength to strength and electric ride on items continue to be extremely successful. The E100 electric scooter achieved a top 20 spot among all toys by value in December**. No mean feat for a big ticket item and this contributed to growth for Razor over the past 12 months. Love for LEGO is unstoppable and we’re delighted to see key themes doing incredibly well – our DC Super Heroes Key Lights assortment which saw confident double digit growth for the year. I cannot forget Stretchkins plush. It was up 146% year on year^. (* NPD Jan – Dec 2015 £ Manufacturers) (** NPD Dec 2015) (^NPD Jan – Dec 2015 £ Traditional Plush)

How are things ooking

How many new products will you be launching here at Toy Fair? This year will mark the biggest roll out of new products by Re:creation – not only additions to our evergreen brands but we’re also introducing two new pillars to our business with the launch of Re:creatables arts and crafts and Re:creation Games. A year of innovation by Razor will deliver at least eight major new products, while our LEGO Lights portfolio will welcome at least 15

new products including hotly collectable Star Wars Episode VII key lights. Joining Stretchkins and Bright Light Pillow in our Snuggables plush portfolio, Pop Out Pets bring something incredibly innovative to the Plush aisle. Finally we’re really thrilled to be announcing an exciting new partnership with Hinkler Publishing from Australia. The first Hinkler products that will be launched by Re:creation will be the new ‘Inkredibles’ range featuring both Thomas the Tank Engine and Paw Patrol. You’ve got a new stand position too – can visitors expect to see anything special on your stand? Our new location places us in the heart of the action. As always we’ll be delighted to let visitors try out our new Razor rides, such as the challenging RipStik Electric, so we’d advise comfy shoes if you’re coming with a view to a thrill!

appeal for families to play together. Both will be TV advertised and set to launch in the summer.

Razor made quite an impact when you launched it in the UK a number of years ago, what plans do you have for this in 2016? 2016 sees Razor bring to life the ultimate demonstration of the brand’s commitment to innovation and to delivering a portfolio of rides that are fun but accessible for all too. Building on the success of the E90 and E100 electric scooters, the team has spent some three years developing new hub motor technology, which has been applied to a line of Powercore E scooters for longer run tims and lots more.

The games were developed by Yulu Toys but will be co-branded under the Re:creation Games umbrella – explain that process to us? We have a great history with the team at Yulu Toys. In autumn/winter we will be launching Story Stars the story telling superhero who reads stories, sings melodies, records personalised messages and projects a starry night sky onto the ceiling. In addition to this, we believe that arts & crafts will continue to grow as a category. In recent years there has been a big trend with children wanting to create their own personalised toys which they have designed. We don’t see this trend slowing down in 2016 and we are set to grow our art & crafts brands further with this trend.

Bradley’s back at Bigjigs Stand H39 Bradley Dodds is back in the toy trade – after a six-month sabbatical he’ll be representing Bigjigs at London Toy Fair. Malcolm Naish, MD of Toys ’n’ Playthings, said: “I’m delighted to inform our readers that Bradly is back in the toy trade – he just couldn’t keep away. I’ve already sent him all the toy trade golf dates for 2016!”

Safety is on the app Stand B72 S G Global safety science organisation UL has developed o a mobile application to assist brands, retailers, manufacturers and suppliers in achieving compliance with new global standards and changing regulations for consumer products. Visitors to UL’s Toy Fair stand can download the app, which is available on iTunes and Google Play, and also take part in the daily prize draw run by the independent company that has been in business for more than 120 years. Dr Natale Consonni, Vice President and General Manager for UL Consumer Products, says: “Navigating the regulatory landscape of global markets can be complex and challenging. “UL is deeply aware that regulatory compliance is one of the most important stages in a products’ route to market and as such we are developing the tools needed for smarter supply chain management.”

Tell us your favourite joke… A gorilla walks into a bar and orders a scotch on the rocks and hands the bartender a £10 note. The bartender thinks: “This gorilla doesn’t know the cost of a drink,” and hands the gorilla 15p change. The bartender says: “You know, we don’t get too many gorillas in here.” The gorilla replies: “Well at £9.85 a drink, I ain’t coming back, either.” David Postlethwaite, Major Accounts Group, Melissa & Doug

The Toy Trust

In toys we trust The Toy Trust is one of the industry’s best supported charity initiatives. After a stellar 2015, there is plenty more planned for 2016 – the Daily News finds out more The toy industry showed its unending support for the Toy Trust in 2015 by raising an amazing £360,000. All of which has been given to charities as the administration is absorbed by the British Foye Pascoe Toy & Hobby Association. Speaking about the figure raised, Foye Pascoe, Toy Trust Chair said: “The Toy Trust has had another fantastic year of fundraising which saw new record levels of participation as well. I’m pleased to say that since the charity began in the early nineties, over £4.5million has been raised – which is a phenomenal achievement. It is always so inspiring to see the industry getting involved collectively to do something good for children who need help the most both here in the UK and abroad.” The main event last year, the Big Thames

Challenge, saw 280 people run, cycle and swim their way to raising £205,000. New for 2015 were events for the non-athletic! Big cake bakes were added to the fundraising activities which included, football, netball, golf, the Industry Christmas card and the Media Auction. In total in 2015, 65 charities were given disbursements to help disabled, deprived or disadvantaged children. Throughout 2016, the industry will have some great opportunities to get involved in the fundraising activity of the Toy Trust. This will start with a week long Big Cake Bake at Easter (followed by another cake bake at Christmas time) with dates to be announced shortly. These events aim to discover the industry’s star bakers where the toy industry Cupcake Awards are presented for outstanding cake creations. For those who like a physical challenge, industry people will be able to take part in the Golf Day at Sonning Golf Club on 30 June,

“

GETTING INVOLVED IN TOY TRUST EVENTS IS NOT ONLY A GREAT WAY FOR PEOPLE TO CONQUER CHALLENGES BUT ALSO TO RAISE MONEY FOR GREAT CAUSES AND SHARE IN THE EXPERIENCE OF TAKING PART WITH INDUSTRY COLLEAGUES. COMPANY RIVALRY CAN BE PUT TO ONE SIDE FOR A DAY!

East African Playgrounds The Toy Trust granted £5,000 to East African Playgrounds for the construction of a brand new playground for upwards of 2000 children that would otherwise not have access to play facilities, at Buwenge Primary school in Uganda. The build was completed and opened in August 2015 with a huge celebration from all the children, parents, local politicians, the village elder and the Mayor of Buwenge attending. The school’s Headmaster, Mr Magidu, said: “On behalf of all of the parents, teachers and children of Bewenge Primary school I would like to thank the East African Playgrounds team for this wonderful play area for our children. I would like to give special thanks to those that funded the building of this playground from the UK Toy Trust. You have made a lasting impact on our children and they will be happy in school from now on.”

the Hasbro football and netball tournaments (date TBC), or the Big Cambridge Challenge on Saturday 2 July. The Challenge involves an 80 mile bike ride from Wyboston to Cambridge and back or, based at Grafham Water, entrants can run a half marathon, cycle a 10 mile family bike ride or take part in a 10 mile family walk. There will also be a limited space tandem skydive on offer for the adventurous at nearby Sibson Airfield, Peterborough. As well as the physical challenges there are other ways to show your support through the Media Auction during Toy Fair, the preChristmas Big Toy Sale for companies to host their own staff sales and lastly the Industry Christmas Card in December – a collective Christmas message via the trade magazines to all your customers. “Getting involved in Toy Trust events is not only a great way for people to conquer challenges but also to raise money for great causes

and share in the experience of taking part with industry colleagues. Company rivalry can be put to one side for a day! There are great ways to get involved this year, and by doing so you will be supporting our 2016 theme – Giving the Gift of Play, which will see the Toy Trust support a number of initiatives and charities around the UK and overseas that all bring new and important positive play experiences to children and young people that otherwise wouldn’t have any access,” said Foye. Companies and individuals are also encouraged to host their own events or initiatives throughout the year if they wish to, and can visit the Toy Trust website to download an event manual with lots of ideas, or they can join any of the organised events and activities throughout the year. Make sure you visit the Toy Trust Coffee Lounge here at Toy Fair – stand Gallery 160 – where you can watch the 2016 promo video, which outlines our plans in full for 2016.

Friendship Works Friendship Works received a grant of £2,300 which funded outings for children in London, all of which have troubled backgrounds or difficult family situations. Children meet with their volunteer mentors for 3-4 hours during weekends. The outings provide one-to-one time for the children to experience and develop a trusting and supportive relationship and be given access to opportunities they may not otherwise have had. The aim being to engage the young people in activities that develop their skills, resilience and confidence such as Sophie, 13, (pictured) who had no friends at school and was being bullied and refused to leave her house or at times, even her bedroom, until she received help and support from her mentor who has helped to rebuild her confidence.
