Mark Hennebry reveals Ensana's plan to double health spa resort portfolio by 2030
One of Europe’s largest operators of health spa hotels, Ensana, has announced its plans to double its international portfolio by 2030.
Founded in 2019, the company operates 28 health spa hotels in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Romania and the UK.
The expansion will focus on historic spa towns and regions with natural resources in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
Ensana will take over the management of its first German property in Q2 of 2026, the Fürstenhof Hotel in the spa town of Bad Griesbach, Bavaria.
The property is currently undergoing extensive renovations.
Our goal is to be a source of expertise, learning and collaboration, to protect mineral springs

Our targeted growth trajectory will see us double our portfolio in the next five years

The Fürstenhof Hotel is surrounded by areas with thermal springs, forests and an 18-hole golf course.
Ensana plans to offer packages for guests who play golf, such as reduced fees and reserved tee times.
Wellness treatments will combine natural remedies with medical expertise.
Ensana has also announced it will open wellness resorts in Montegrotto Terme, Italy, as well as in Ain Najm, Saudi Arabia.
Mark Hennebry, chair of Ensana, told Spa Business: “Ensana has devoted significant resources to building relationships with a network of investors, developers and brokers over the last few years.”

Oliver Krügel safeguards the future of The Great Spa Towns of Europe
The Great Spa Towns of Europe (GSTE) Association discussed the spa towns’ legacies at the first general assembly under the leadership of new chair Oliver Krügel, the Mayor of Bad Ems, Germany, earlier this month. There are a total of eleven spa towns throughout Europe that form a transnational UNESCO World Heritage Site. This year, the GSTE Association explored a Property Management Plan for the spa towns, which involved envisioning the World Heritage Site’s future.
Krügel told Spa Business that environmental factors need to be addressed: “Climate change is one of the most pressing issues facing our mineral waters, from flash flooding to drought, posing a potential threat to spring emergence points. We don't yet have enough data to understand exactly how, so we have set up a group of hydrology and geology experts to research this. Fortunately, we have a wide network of expertise and support to safeguard the springs."

Anna Bjurstam advises health clubs to adopt wellness
Anna Bjurstam, strategic advisor for Six Senses and founder of spa consultancy Raison d’Etre, told fitness and wellness professionals at the recent HCM Summit in London that delivering physical fitness is now the bare minimum requirement for gym operations.
During the HCM Summit, a one-day forum for operators and innovators in the fitness and wellness industries, Bjurstam joined a line-up of 12 top-ranking global executives to discuss lessons learned and the future of the market.
She told delegates that facilities offering fitness need to integrate longevity medicine and holistic lifestyle-focused practices in order to stay relevant in the evolving world of wellness.
Bjurstam also made the point that “longevity” programming can be very low-tech. Operators can offer interventions by creating consistent habits among their clients without investing heavily in equipment.

Aufguss World Masters
Lasse Eriksen reflects on this year's Aufguss World Championship finals
Hosted inside the newly-built 300-seat sauna at Aquardens Verona, Italy, the Aufguss World Championship finals combined breathtaking architecture with state-of-the-art theatre technology.
Complete with modern light and sound systems and powerful EOS ovens, the arena provided the perfect setting for the artistry, heat and ritual of aufguss.
The six-day, sold-out competition drew 115 finalists from 18 countries, who presented 96
15-minute performances to a total of more than 30,000 sauna-souls over the course of the week.
Verona represents a significant homecoming for the international championship, as the roots of Aufguss World Masters can be traced back to Cron4 in Bruneck.
This year marked the first participation of the USA and Canada, further expanding the global scope of the competition. During the opening ceremony, Aufguss World Masters also welcomed Moldova and Sweden as new delegations, set to debut in 2026.
Queen of singles
Among the 40 singles finalists, Sigrid van Rijswijk from the Netherlands emerged as the new world champion – becoming only the second woman ever to win the singles title. Previously crowned champion in the team category, van Rijswijk stunned audiences with a powerful story of a fraudulent fortune teller who discovers she possesses supernatural abilities. The performance climaxed in a
breathtaking sequence where two towels seemed to fly into her hands as if by magic, symbolising her new-found powers.
Judges praised her show for its masterful blend of light, sound, heat, fragrance and storytelling. The performance ended on a hopeful note, with the fortune teller learning to use her gifts for good – a narrative that left the sauna in euphoria.
Other shows featured a quirky Alice in Wonderland, a haunting tale reminiscent of Snow White and a witty repetitive reinvention of Groundhog Day.
Team champions
The team division also showcased 40 world-class performances. The gold medal went to the Czech Republic team of Robert Zidek, Barbora Brozova and Gabor Tapolcai. Their piece combined technical mastery with a nuanced story of class, power and personal growth. Two high-society men attempted to mould a commoner to fit into their world, with humour and depth, leaving audiences deeply moved.
While only a handful could take home medals, audiences were treated to an extraordinary variety of themes and storytelling
Closing reflections
Throughout the competition, the performers transformed the sauna into a stage where heat met theatre, ritual created artistry and communities united in sweat and song.
As Pablo Picasso once said: “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” In Verona, aufguss masters reminded us that creativity, storytelling and shared rituals can bring out that inner artist – and remind us of our shared humanity.
The championship week closed with gratitude to organisers, performers and audiences alike.
The journey continues next year, when the 2026 Aufguss World Championships will be held at Satama Sauna Resort and Spa near Berlin, Germany, between 7–13 September. ●

Going geothermal
Visitors to the newly opened Laugarás Lagoon can descend from an upper pool to a lower pool through a passage under the water’s surface, emerging through a waterfall
Construction cost was estimated to be around ISK 2 billion (US$15.6 million, €13.7 million, £11.6 million)
Laugarás Lagoon, a new two-storey geothermal day spa destination, has opened on Iceland’s Golden Circle –a popular tourist route.
Located on the banks of the Hvitá River in the village of Laugarás, the facility honours traditional Icelandic turf houses – grass-roofed earth shelters that blend into the landscape. Drawing on Roman and Japanese design principles, visitors can descend from an upper pool to a lower pool through a passage under the water’s surface, emerging through a waterfall.
Facilities
The bathing area, which features 1,000sq m of thermal waters, offers a range of pools that maintain temperatures of 37-39 degrees Celsius. The bathing circuit’s forest pool is warmer (39-40 degrees Celsius) compared to the cold plunge pool that uses glacial water from the nearby river (5-10 degrees Celsius).
There is also a dry sauna and a wet sauna positioned on the forest edge in the facility’s 270sq m of outdoor spa space, separate to the lagoon. Other facilities include two swim-up bars, a 6.6-metre waterfall and a secluded grotto with seating.

Architects T.ARK, engineering firm Efla and lighting design studio Hildiberg also worked on the project.
Hjalti Gylfason, one of the partners at construction company Mannverk, told local media last year that the

Sew Handpan builds all-weather Sound Tree for community creativity
Sew Handpan, an Italian manufacturer of handpans and other musical instruments, has launched a sculptural musical installation called Sound Tree to enrich public spaces and wellness operations. Designed in collaboration with an Italian artist and musician called Paolo Borghi, Sound Tree’s shape draws inspiration from the olive tree. The sculpture is a musical instrument made of weather-resistant materials that anyone can play. Suspended from a corten steel frame – or trunk – the aluminium
tubular bells produce harmonic and meditative tones when struck with two simple mallets.
The installation provides an invitation to communities to engage in curiosity, relaxation, play and connection. The music can be created in public spaces or during workshops in wellness centres.
Stefano Ingrosso, founder and CEO of Sew Handpan told Spa Business, “We want to give sound to spaces. We’re offering hotels, spas and wellness centres something that can be considered an asset for their venue. Sound Tree is a sculpture that
can be used to furnish external and internal spaces, but it can also be used as a tool during sound healing sessions, events and experiences. It’s a living bridge between art, nature and human emotion.”
