Chest, 17th century
Behind the unassuming exterior of Leighton House lies a kaleidoscopic vision, with every room and surface covered with fine and decorative art from all over the world. This exquisite chest sits in the staircase hall, adapted as a seat with luxurious cushions designed and embroidered by Gertrude Jekyll (1843-1932). The piece is elaborately inlaid with ivory geometric patterns. For many years it was thought to have been made in Turkey, a marriage or ‘hope chest’ that would have been filled with handmade linens … but now we are not so sure … further research is in hand.
