Girl Sitting, by Kate Greenaway (1846 – 1901) A still and contemplative illustration of a little girl sitting at an open window, whimsically dressed in a smock and hat, framed by an apple tree. This piece hangs in the Morning Room of Sambourne House. Greenaway’s work was particularly known for the delicate, detailed and rather nostalgic depiction of dress, which could be linked to her childhood observations of her mother’s work as a seamstress and milliner. Amongst Greenaway’s patrons was Frederic, Lord Leighton who bought two of her watercolours.
