Santa Clara’s services are expanding to fill these kinds of health care
gaps. This summer, a mobile mammography truck will begin monthly visits to serve patients who need this cancer screening. Twice a month, a representative from St. Joseph Medical Center visits Santa Clara to pre-register expectant mothers at the hospital for their upcoming birth. The clinic’s geriatrics practice is also growing under the guidance of Dr. Monica Prado, whose oldest patient is more than 100 years old!
“People are living longer, and older patients bring a new set of health
concerns,” says Dr. Prado, a family medicine physician specializing in geriatrics. “They’re frailer, more at risk for falls, and have sleeping problems. Medication dosages are different for older people, as are blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Our bodies change as we age.”
Appointments with older patients include a detailed evaluation of
the person’s memory, mental health, social life, and living environment. “Many older patients live by themselves,” she says. “I need to know if they can care for themselves. Are they driving? Is their home safe? Do we need to arrange for in-home nursing visits, home health equipment, or other social support?”
