Circle of Caring LCH Endowment Board Chair on LCH and Planned Gifts When Tripp Carter was asked to serve on the Legacy Community Health (LCH) Endowment Board, he did not hesitate to serve. He sees Legacy as an amazing organization, that provides the highest standard of care, with a very efficient and effective service delivery. Carter now serves as Chairman of the LCH Endowment Board and is very proud of his association with this award winning, forward thinking organization. Now a successful business partner with Bradshaw Carter, Tripp Carter previously spent more than 25 years in the world of philanthropy, raising funds for well-known organizations such as the University of Texas Health Science Center and the renowned Menil Collection. Carter likes to use his fundraising skills for good organizations he believes in. He knows what questions to ask before he commits and instinctively understands what the hallmarks of a strong nonprofit need to be. Legacy’s strong reputation fueled significant growth in the mid to late 2000s, and today LCH boasts twelve clinics across Houston and parts of South Texas. Carter states this stellar reputation made it easy for him and his two coChairs, Martha Turner and Trini Mendenhall, to raise more than $10 million to build Legacy’s newest two clinics in the Gulfton area and the Fifth Ward.

Meet Kalvin and Eunice “I don’t have HIV; I’m not gay,” Kalvin Marshall remembers saying, back in 2007, when he got the news that he was living with HIV. But he did, and so did his wife Eunice. They decided right then that, if they weren’t dead in a year, they would spread the word that HIV wasn’t a gay-only disease. They would be the face of a straight couple living with HIV. Now, 10 years later, they’re alive and keeping their promise. Every third Thursday of the month, Kalvin and Eunice share their story in the lobby of Legacy’s Montrose clinic. The Marshalls are members of Legacy’s Positive Organization Project (POP+), an advocacy training program designed by and for people living with HIV/AIDS. At the time of their diagnosis, they didn’t know HIV wasn’t actually a death sentence. They were given no guidance or information on the disease, which is what drives the passionate couple in their advocacy today. Because her husband is not gay, Eunice believes doctors initially missed his diagnosis. “He was shuffled to a lot of different doctors — a neurologist, an oncologist, and an endocrinologist — for six months before being diagnosed,” she says. It was only after being admitted to the hospital – his kidneys were shutting down – that he received an HIV diagnosis. That was 2007 and while progress has been made in the treatment and prevention of the virus, there’s still much more work to do, stigmas to erase. “HIV doesn’t discriminate — whether you’re rich, poor, black, white, gay, bisexual, heterosexual or transgender. Your sexual orientation doesn’t put you at risk. Having unprotected sex and not knowing your status does,” says Eunice.
