Community Partners Make a Difference
During my time at Legacy Community Health, we have grown from three clinics to 30. We have gone from serving 22,000 patients per year, to treating more than 160,000 individuals. We have gone from a small staff of 100 employees to an organization that employs more than 1,100 Texans. Much of our success can be attributed to the dedicated men and women who carry out our mission every day, and it’s no exaggeration to say that none of this would’ve been possible without our steadfast community partners. We are fortunate to be affiliated with supportive, generous organizations all across Southeast Texas. H-E-B continues to support Legacy’s Little Readers, a program that gives children’s books to pediatric patients at all well-child visits. Thanks in part to H-E-B’s generosity, we’ve handed out more than 81,000 books since the program started in 2015. Our friends at Noble Energy weren’t satisfied to simply commit long-term philanthropic support to Legacy’s maternal health program; they also held a book drive this past December in support of Legacy’s Little Readers. We’ve also enjoyed continued partnerships with United Way, as we are affiliated with branches in Houston and Beaumont, and the Executive and Professional Association of Houston (EPAH). The Apache Corporation, ExxonMobil, Burberry, and AIDS United all helped further Legacy’s mission and vision in 2018 by supporting a variety of our essential programs. Special thanks must be sent to Houston Methodist, whose Community Benefits program has provided monetary support and free lab and imaging services to Legacy patients for more than 20 years. In recent years Legacy has also
benefitted from Houston Methodist’s Mental Health Innovation program, which allows our behavioral health staff to help recently released juvenile offenders receive treatment and connect to other services they need to maintain good health and stay on the right path. In addition to this generous financial support, Houston Methodist provided Legacy patients with specialty care services via their Community Scholars Program. Legacy hosts clinicians from Houston Methodist’s Endocrinology and Nephrology programs, with more specialties to come in 2019. Legacy also partners with Houston Methodist’s Center for Outcomes Research to better understand the impact of specialist physicians in a community health center. Legacy is part of Houston Methodist’s Network of Care, which helps patients access the doctors they need, even when affordability is a concern. This program connects uninsured or underinsured Houston Methodist patients with community health centers across the city, and Legacy is proud to be part of this initiative. This kind of dedicated, resolute support is rare in today’s world, and it speaks to just how committed everyone at Houston Methodist is to serving the health care of those in need. Our community partners are an important, indispensable part of driving healthy change in our communities, and we are looking forward to continuing these relationships long into the future.

Closing the Books on an Eventful Year

It feels like I write the same thing every January, but last year was a truly special time to be a part of the Legacy family. We accomplished so much in 2018 that it’s impossible to single out our most notable achievement, and to do so would be unfair to any number of our hard-working staff. Instead, we should look back on 2018 as the year we increased access to care to patients across Southeast Texas, and continued driving healthy change in the communities that need it the most.

Three new sites began operating in 2018 so that we would be better positioned to treat more patients. In Beaumont we opened Legacy Central Stagg, a site that offers behavioral health services, as well as pediatric and OB/GYN care. We now operate two clinics in this underserved city, where more than 21% of residents are living without health insurance. We also opened Legacy Northline, our first clinic on the north side of downtown Houston, and Legacy Midtown Main. Legacy’s OB2Pedi Program began in the summer of 2018, and this initiative has already made a significant impact on the lives of our pregnant and pediatric patients. OB2Pedi provides pregnant women with educational materials and guidance throughout the pregnancies, and then helps them transition into parenthood. These materials are designed to help our patients move seamlessly from their obstetrics provider to the pediatric clinician they need to keep their children happy and healthy. The journey to and through parenthood is a precious one, and OB2Pedi is one way our team of caring providers is dedicated to be with their patients every step of the way. Two of Legacy’s special events raised the bar last year, with the 2018 versions of each raising more money than ever before. Mint Julep, the drag show that supports our HIV/AIDS programs and services, raised more than $100,000 thanks to generous donors who turned the third Sunday in July into a party no one at our organization will soon forget. The traditional Legacy Luncheon,
usually held at the Wortham Theater Center, was once again turned into a cocktail party due to the lingering impact of Hurricane Harvey. Our donors embraced this festive evening like never before, contributing more than $400,000 to two important programs: Legacy’s Little Readers, which gives pediatric patients a children’s book at well-child visits, and our pharmacy, which provides low cost prescriptions to Texans who often can’t afford to purchase medicine. Our most significant achievement, though, is tied directly to our busiest location. Legacy Southwest has long been the standard bearer for our OB/GYN and Pediatric practices, but the staff working there has been delivering excellent care in spite of a subpar facility. Thanks to the Houston philanthropic community, Legacy’s Development Department completed our $10 million capital campaign in 2018. Legacy employees pushed us over the finish line by contributing more than $240,000 in the last two weeks of the campaign. All told, the Legacy staff gave back more than $600,000 to support their coworkers and our Southwest patients. Because of this, we broke ground on a new Southwest Clinic on December 14, 2018. It’s impossible to predict what the future holds for the health care industry, especially given the volatile nature of today’s political landscape. Legacy’s future is less uncertain, however, thanks to the generosity of our donors and the support of communities across Southeast Texas. Because of people like you, our patients know that we will be there for them and their families for years to come.
For the second year in a row, Legacy’s Annual Luncheon was repurposed into a magnificent cocktail party. The 2018 event honored Richard Flowers, and was hosted by Sheridan Williams, Elizabeth Petersen, Melissa Mithoff, Katherine Murphy, and Shannon Hall & Marcus Sloan. Sheridan and John Eddie opened their home to guests for a gorgeous evening of food, drink, and delightful conversation.
