2017 is shaping up to be a busy year for Legacy Community Health, with new construction and renovations at six locations around Greater Houston. We’re completing the new Legacy Fifth Lyons clinic in Fifth Ward, expanding into Deer Park, remodeling our Baytown clinic, and opening additional locations in the Gulfton area. We’re also undergoing a major renovation at Legacy Montrose. Here’s a look at how Legacy is growing to drive healthy change in our communities.
Legacy Fifth Ward Lyons 3811 Lyons Avenue, Houston Opening May Eleven years ago, when Legacy took over the city health clinic in Fifth Ward, not many people in the neighborhood thought we’d be there very long. The new Legacy Fifth Ward Lyons location, a cornerstone of the neighborhood’s continuing renaissance, shows we’re here to stay. Developed with strong support from the Fifth Ward Redevelopment Corporation, the 16,900 square foot clinic will offer the full suite of health, wellness, and social services.

Legacy Deer Park Center Street 3430 Center Street, Deer Park Opening May Legacy’s proven track record of launching culturally competent health services in new communities is one of the reasons we received federal approval and grant funding to open a clinic in this critically underserved area. This area, which encompasses parts of Deer Park, South Houston, and Pasadena, is home to some of the poorest Texans, and very few of the 120,000 residents have reliable access to basic health care. The 6,500 square foot location will initially offer adult and pediatric primary care, obstetrics, and behavioral health services, with plans to add dental in the future.
Legacy Montrose Pharmacy 1415 California Street, Houston Opening October Staff at Legacy’s Montrose pharmacy work in tight quarters to fill 800 prescriptions every day and serve a line of people that consistently stretches out the door. To better meet demand for our on-site medication services, Legacy is converting the first floor parking garage into a pharmacy that’s three times larger than the current space. The reception area (pictured right) has more room for patient-pharmacist interaction and shelving for over-the-counter products such as vitamins, supplements, or diabetic supplies. This fall, we will take over pharmacy operations from Walgreens, with extended hours and new technology to push out patient medication reminders. Coordinating care between Legacy pharmacists and clinical staff means we can ensure patients follow medication schedules and refill prescriptions for better health outcomes. Appointment check-in and eligibility services are also moving to the new first floor, making room for additional primary care and infectious disease exam rooms and clinical areas.

Legacy Sharpstown Rookin 6677 Rookin Street, Houston Opening April Legacy is acquiring Dr. Rubina Khan’s Clinicare practice, which will combine her special needs pediatric services with much-needed behavioral health care from Legacy. Dr. Khan and her staff will stay on as part of our team to provide a continuum of care to a largely Vietnamese patient population. Legacy Sharpstown Rookin is within walking distance from our larger Southwest and Baker-Ripley clinics, making it easier for transportation-challenged families to keep appointments, establish regular well-child visits, and manage chronic health conditions.
Legacy Sharpstown SW Freeway 9401 Southwest Freeway, Suite 127, Houston Opened February When leadership at Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD wanted to establish primary care services for its behavioral health patients, they reached out to Legacy for help. In February, Dr. Eric Nolen of Legacy’s Mapleridge clinic began seeing patients one day a week at the Center’s Southwest Freeway location. Patients who need additional care or can’t immediately be fit into an already-packed schedule are referred to three other Legacy locations nearby. The coordination between the Harris Center’s behavioral health staff and our primary care team is an extension of Legacy’s established model of integrated care.

Outreach and Advocating for Healthy Communities
Legacy’s Positive Organizing Project (POP+) partnered with city and community advocates for “The Truth About HIV in the Black Community.” The Sunnyside community, where the event was located, is also one of the areas in Houston seeing greater rates of new HIV cases. With impending change ahead for the Affordable Care Act, Legacy hosted a town hall meeting to discuss the future of the program and what a repeal could mean to patients. Legacy was among the beneficiaries of Halloween Magic’s “Rand Paul’s Drag Race: Destination 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue” show. Julie Kay Laskowski was one of the actors in the musical satire of the presidential election. Halloween Magic has donated more than $50,000 to Legacy over the past 20 years.
Ricaé Walker of Houstonia magazine presents a check for more than $700 to Tim Martinez, Senior Director of Development. The magazine selected Legacy as the beneficiary for its “Love Wins Texas” Weddings Expo.

Building Healthy Minds and Homes
Legacy staff literally helped build healthier communities at Habitat for Humanity’s SuperBUILD LI/51. Held in conjunction with Super Bowl festivities, the effort built 51 homes for low-income families.
The Cat in the Hat stopped by Legacy Southwest in March for Dr. Seuss Day and Read Aloud Month. Legacy providers, doctors, and volunteers encouraged families to read aloud with their children from birth to build critical literacy skills and encourage family learning.
