A Tribute to A Bit of Rappahannock... When the fields are fresh and green, ‘tis then old Black Rock should be seen. Its hills and meadows most serene, can readily inspire a poet’s dream. When storms threaten, as they often do, Black Rock takes on a different hue. No matter what the time of year, we always hold our Black Rock dear. It’s always there to excite emotion, and rekindle anew our great devotion. I’ve traveled far, by sea and air, and never have found a land so fair As Black Rock Farm with its tranquil air. — Jack Dwyer In Loving Memory of John J. Dwyer January 10, 1919-July 27,2003

Schoolhouse Nine, the county’s first and only golf course, opened in the summer of 2015 next to the Sperryville Schoolhouse complex, where U.S. routes 211 and 522 meet. The course is open 8 a.m. till dark daily; rounds start and (especially) end at the adjacent The Black Twig (see Places to Eat). Trail mix Local experts help visitors pick a hike Rappahannock County has no shortage of ways to enjoy the outdoors, but for firsttime visitors, choosing a hike can be a little overwhelming. Old Rag? Mary’s Rock? A waterfall? Something the kids can handle? And just how hard is “strenuous,” anyway? Jenny and Andrew Leech spend a lot of time answering those questions. The longtime Sperryville residents own Happy Camper, an outdoor gear shop inside the Sperryville Schoolhouse, just a few miles from Shenandoah National Park’s Thornton Gap entrance. Visitors regularly walk through the door looking for advice — sometimes with a hike already picked out and sometimes

reasonable for the weather, the day, the group, the level of activity, the timing, all of that kind of thing,” Jenny said. Luckily, there’s a trail for just about everybody.
Start with the view If the goal is to get up on the mountain and see what all the fuss is about, the Leeches have a few favorites. Mary’s Rock is one — and there’s more than one way to get there. The traditional climb from Thornton Gap involves a healthy dose of elevation, but hikers looking for something gentler can start from the Meadow Spring parking area on Skyline Drive, take Meadow Spring Trail to the Appalachian Trail and continue to Mary’s Rock.

with little more than a desire to get on a trail. The Leeches’ first question is often not, “Where do you want to go?” but “Who is going?” A family with young children needs a different hike than a pair of experienced hikers. Weather, season, available time and fitness level all matter, too. “There are a lot of people that come and they want to know if their choice of hike that they may research in advance is

“You get the same endpoint, but you’re doing a shorter hike,” Andrew said. For Jenny, the real trick is timing it right. Around late May and early June, mountain laurel blooms along the trail. “It’s like you’re walking through a wallpaper of flowers,” she said. Hawksbill is another favorite, particularly for hikers looking for a big payoff. At 4,051 feet, it’s the highest point in Shenandoah National Park. Jenny likes it in spring, when trilliums are blooming, and again in fall, when the summit offers a sweeping look at the changing leaves. For something easier, Andrew points families toward Stony Man or Passamaquoddy Trail near Skyland. It follows the contour of the mountain instead of charging straight uphill, with views along the way and a relatively wide, generally flat trail. And for anyone hiking with kids, there’s a major bonus: Skyland and its bathrooms and other amenities are nearby.
Wander beyond the greatest hits Old Rag and Mary’s Rock get plenty of
attention, but some of the Leeches’ favorite outings involve mixing and matching trails. Jenny’s personal favorite starts around Buck Hollow and eventually works its way toward Mary’s Rock, taking in a stream crossing, plenty of stairs, the remains of an old mountain homestead and a stretch of the Appalachian Trail before ending with the view from Mary’s Rock. For hikers who would rather chase water than views, Cedar Run is another favorite. The steep trail follows streams and waterfalls and offers a completely different Shenandoah experience from the mountaintop hikes. And then there’s Old Rag. Andrew’s favorite is the classic route, rock scramble and all. He likes that the hard work comes with views throughout the climb, followed by a comparatively easy walk down the fire road. “The views are unmatched,” Jenny said. But the scramble isn’t the only way to experience Old Rag. Andrew recommends the fire-road approach from the Weakley Hollow side for hikers who aren’t
comfortable climbing and squeezing their way through the rocks. A $2 ticket is required to hike Old Rag from March through November, which can be purchased online at recreation.gov.
Let the season pick the hike One of the Leeches’ best pieces of advice is also one of the simplest: Don’t hike Shenandoah the same way all year. In spring, try Hawksbill when the trilliums are blooming. A few weeks later, head toward Mary’s Rock for the mountain laurel. Summer is a good time to seek out water along Cedar Run. When the leaves begin changing, Andrew and Jenny point visitors toward Hawksbill and Passamaquoddy, where wide-open views make it possible to take in whole mountainsides of fall color. Winter has its charms, too. Andrew likes the fire road through Weakley Hollow, which follows water and offers a wider, more gradual walk than steeper trails such as Whiteoak Canyon.
