Deborah Tompkins Johnson receives Colgan Award

WINNER

Deborah Tompkins Johnson received the 2026 Charles J. Colgan Visionary Award, honoring her decades of leadership and community service across Prince William County and the region.

The award, named in memory of the longtime state senator from the region who passed away in January 2017, recognizes individuals for their service to the business community. It was presented during the chamber’s annual awards dinner on Feb. 26 at the Magnoliya Grand Conference and Event Center.

Born at Fort Campbell, Ky., and raised in Petersburg, Johnson studied communications and journalism at what is now James Madison University. Her professional career spans education, aviation, broadcasting and corporate leadership, but she spent most of it at Dominion Energy.

Johnson, a longtime civic leader, has served on numerous boards, committees and advisory groups throughout Northern Virginia. Her nominator, Yolanda Colleen Green of Dominion Energy, wrote that Johnson “has been a steadfast community leader for many years, consistently uplifting others through her dedication, humility and passion for service.”

A former board chair of the Prince William Regional Chamber of Commerce, Johnson was the first African American to hold the role. Johnson currently serves as vice rector of the board of visitors at James Madison University and vice president of the Board of Trustees for Joe Gibbs’ Youth for Tomorrow.

She started with Dominion in its Corporate Media Relations department at the Richmond headquarters. After relocating, she served as the company’s spokesperson for Northern Virginia and later held leadership positions in the company’s Customer Service, Energy Efficiency and Key Accounts departments. She retired from Dominion Energy as regional policy director for Northern Virginia.

Johnson is also a longtime writer, having authored more than 200 articles and a 2013 book profiling career journeys and challenges.
