Crews repair sinkhole along Eustace Road
CARDBOARD CRUISING
The Virginia Department of Transportation and contractor crews used heavy equipment last week and through the weekend to repair a sinkhole on Eustace Road in Stafford following heavy rain across the region. Around 18 feet deep and 25 feet wide, the sinkhole closed Eustace Road for several days between Northampton Boulevard and Legal Court. VDOT and Stafford County Public Works were coordinating to investigate and determine the cause of the sinkhole, assess the damage and repair or replace a 42-inch drainage pipe underneath Eustace Road, according to a statement from VDOT. Eustace Road carries an average of 5,800 vehicles a day, according to a 2017 VDOT traffic count. Stafford resident pursues PGA fellowship MINORITY PROFESSIONALS LEARNING GOLF INDUSTRY THROUGH LOCAL PROGRAM
F
ollowing the concept of “If you can see it, you can be it,” the PGA of America is moving to diversify who works in the golf business or plays the game. Stafford resident Tajma Brown, 24, has set a high bar in her role as one of the first to join the PGA WORKS Fellowship in the Middle Atlantic PGA Section, which is headquartered in Stafford. The fellowship is a 12-month, paid entry-level employment for individuals from diverse backgrounds to get
golf-industry experience through PGA REACH, the charitable foundation of the PGA of America. “I’ve interned with the Philadelphia 76ers and the Wilmington Blue Rocks, and I’ve also worked with a Division I athletic team— but I’ve never had a background in golf,” said Brown, a native of Wilmington, Del. Brown said she is passionate about the local community and is thwrilled to have the chance to work at the Middle Atlantic PGA Section. “Stafford is almost like a hidden little gem,” said Brown of living in the community. “It has almost everything I need directly in the city, with larger cities just a few miles away. The city is very inclusive, much more than I anticipated when
I got the job. The people I’ve met at the banks, restaurants, and grocery stores are super sweet.” A Hampton University graduate with a Bachelor of Science in sport management and a master’s in sport management from West Virginia University, Brown is gathering lifelong experiences and professional exposure to the golf industry and corporate America. “You just want to do what you love, and I love working in sports,” Brown said. “In five years, I see myself working with a task force at the PGA to help bring more women and other minority groups into the game. I feel like I was made for this position.” PGA» PAGE 3

COUNTY: DISCOLORED WATER IS SAFE Stafford County utilities customers in the northern areas of the county, served by the Smith Lake Water Treatment Plant, may see temporary water discoloration, according to a press release from the county. Recent rainfall has stirred up the level of naturally occurring manganese in the water; however, the water is safe, according to the release. Any discoloration should be cleared by running the water. The Stafford County Utilities department said this week that it is adjusting its treatment process to reduce the tint in the water.
Tajma Brown is the first PGA WORKS fellow and works at the Middle Atlantic PGA Section in Stafford County. SUBMITTED
Brown assists with the PGA Jr. League, junior golf tournaments and the foundational elements of the Junior Golf Alumni Association. She takes an active role in the section’s communications and promotional initiatives, assists with the restructuring of the junior golf platform on the section’s website, writes articles for the monthly newsletter and creates content for social media.
This work has introduced Brown to just how special the game of golf is and its ability to change the lives of the people who play it, according to the PGA. “My experience has been amazing,” Brown said. “It has been an experience I wouldn’t trade for anything. I’ve met a lot of great people, and I’ve had a lot of great skills added to my repertoire. I’m very proud of this program and where it’s trying to go.”

disenfranchise thousands of Stafford voters. It was a program that failed miserably in the past. It was in 1993 that Aquia resident Susan Anne Cortez, in full disclosure she is my wife, led her small team of outraged citizens who had their fill of the abuses and misrepresentations of the thenappointed school board who were simply puppets of the superintendent and board of supervisors. It took very little time for them to gather the needed signatures to put the elected school board question on the November ballot, and it passed by a 14,526 vote landslide. Hartwood voters now armed with the knowledge of Snelling’s plans have an opportunity to send him a political message next election cycle, rather than letting him continue to impugn the reputation of our elected school board members. Was Snellings simply trying to validate his legacy in elected office when school board officials had investigated the trailer and chose it was not needed? Some might call it puffery, or simply political pandering at its finest. The ethics of such actions and intentions remain profusely odoriferous, staining the noble intentions of Stafford boards. Without equivocation, it is for duly “elected” school officials staying in their lane to decide the issue. And what do we say to our children about bullying? Daniel P. Cortez of Stafford is a Northern Virginia political writer and broadcaster. He is active in veteran and minority affairs and may be reached at dpcortez1969@yahoo.com.

If a thief can attach a credit card reader on machines we use or scammers are free to call us whenever and repeatedly, why can’t we have systems and technology that prevents this from happening? Why can’t the telephone companies create buttons we press when we hear the unwelcome voice that will permanently prevent that caller from calling me again. I think it is fair for me to have the ability to permanently shut the door on people, instead of them having the ability to intrude on me whenever and as often as they choose. Kaine, Williams open Fredericksburg fi eld offi ce » BY MARTY VAN DUYNE/NEWS NET NEWS FOR INSIDENOVA
A standing room only crowd greeted Democratic Party candidates Sen. Tim Kaine and Vangie Williams as they formally opened their campaign office in Fredericksburg on July 26. Williams, who is running against Republican Rep. Rob Wittman in the 1st District, was the first to address the crowd in her signature bright red jacket that she says represents the color of love. “I like who’s running at the top of my ticket,” she said, referring to Kaine. Then she went on to say of her opponent: “He’s running ‘from’ the person at the top of his ticket.” It was a reference to Kaine’s challenger, Republican Corey Stewart. “This campaign is about you. I’m not being bought off. I’m not the one that’s going to have to answer to a corporation. I have to answer to you,” Williams said. She told the crowd to talk to their friends and neighbors, regardless of which party they’re in. Williams went on to say

that people will vote for a split ticket, especially with some of the issues currently facing Americans — such as the immigration system that has children separated from their families at the border. “I do not understand how that could happen in the United States of America,” Williams said. She said she would be taking on challenges facing the economy, transportation, education, innovation and retirement.

bacterial cells; different voices from different numbers daily spouting similar sales pitches. If my neighbor did that I could take legal action, but a stranger in some distant place is untouchable. We should not ask the police for help. This is not their job. It is the job of the phone companies and the companies to whom we have, in good faith, given our contact information to be used only by them. They are responsible and should be held responsible by our local, state and federal officials. The bottom-line is that our elected officials are not addressing this issue. We are told that we can stop it by going to a website and entering, one by one, numbers we don’t want to telephone us again. But, when thieves can change their numbers at will, our burden only continues and grows. When a thief can take your Facebook account picture and use it to pose as you or use other personal information for illegal purposes like posing as your grandchild who is in jail and in dire need of bail money, it is time for action because the thieves are winning. Our aging, retired — especially military — Stafford community is vulnerable. Wouldn’t you think, if they can put a device in a car that steers it and stops it to prevent accidents, a little button or number on our phones to stop calls should be a piece of cake. STAFFORD BRIEF NEW TRAFFIC SIGNAL INSTALLED AT PARK-AND-RIDE LOT A new traffic signal has been activated at the intersection of Courthouse Road and Wyche Road in Stafford County. It was placed in coordination with the new Park & Ride lot that opened July 30. Previously, the temporary traffic signal located at the intersection of Courthouse Road and Wyche Road was in flash mode. The Virginia Department of Transportation Park & Ride lot on Courthouse Road moved to its new permanent location, east of the Interstate 95 interchange at exit 140.
Message boards and signs are posted to notify drivers to the new signal and traffic pattern at the intersection. The new commuter lot and traffic signal are part of an ongoing construction project to build a diverging diamond interchange at exit 140. The new lot opened with approximately 600 parking spaces and the final lot will have 850 parking spaces when construction is complete by July 2020. This is the first of two commuter lots being built as part of the $185 million project. For more information, visit VirginiaDOT.org.

Deputy Karl Warnick went to a residence on North Pointe Drive in south Stafford on July 19 about a larceny. The elderly resident said that a man identified as Kenneth Jerome Brown Sr., 49, of Fredericksburg, went to her residence July 6 and asked to borrow her vehicle. She agreed to let him use the vehicle if he returned it the next day. She told the deputy that Brown worked for a tree service company that worked on her property every year. After trying to contact Brown without any return calls, the woman called the

After the deadline passed without Brown returning the vehicle, the victim again contacted the sheriff ’s office. This time, the deputy was unable to reach Brown. Brown was taken into custody July 25 after deputies found him lying on the ground on Route 3. Brown provided the location of the stolen truck, which was found at a motel in Spotsylvania County near Lake Anna. Brown was incarcerated at Rappahannock Regional Jail on charges of unauthorized use and driving on a revoked license.

North Stafford’s Ravenel finds success in Spain
STAFFORD BRIEFS MELCHERS INITIATES NEW SECURITY MEASURES
» BY DAVID FAWCETT
dfawcett@insidenova.com
Brandon Ravenel thought his chance of playing pro football anywhere was over until his father mentioned the possibility of going overseas. After doing some research, the former North Stafford High School and James Madison University standout wide receiver sent his information to a pro league in Spain. One team, the Badalona Dracs, expressed interest via email. But Ravenel faced a dilemma. It was a chance to keep playing, but it was also outside his comfort zone in a place he was unfamiliar with. “I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go,” Ravenel said. “My dad told me I might never get a chance like this again.” Ravenel decided to try and see if he liked it. If he didn’t, he could always come home. The opposite happened. Ravenel returned to Stafford County this summer, but only for the offseason. He plans to return overseas for another pro season after helping lead Badalona to the Liga Nacional de Fútbol Americano championship in June. Ravenel isn’t sure if he’ll return to Badalona. He might play for another Spanish team or try Germany. “It was more than I expected,” Ravenel said. “It’s one of those life lessons.” Ravenel was disappointed that no NFL team brought him in, even for a tryout after being named all-Colonial Athletic

Association twice and totaling 45 receptions for 720 yards and five touchdowns his senior season at JMU. His style of play fit right in, though, with Badalona’s offense. The team threw the ball 90 percent of the time. He finished as Badalona’s leading receiver with 84 catches for 1,500 yards and 19 touchdowns. He also rushed for three touchdowns, passed
for one and returned a punt and a missed field goal for two more scores. Ravenel said his biggest challenge was overcoming the language barrier. He also had to adjust to the league’s physical play. But neither prevented Ravenel from wanting to continue his football career. “Everyone has their own path, and maybe my path is somewhere else,” Ravenel said.

Bryngelson prepares for second season of field hockey » BY DAVID DRIVER
FOR INSIDENOVA
Last season was historic for the field hockey program at Division III Christopher Newport University. And Lily Bryngelson, as a freshman, was part of that success. The Mountain View High School graduate played in 13 games, with four starts at left forward, for the Captains of Newport News. “Last year was a great season for CNU,” according to Bryngelson. “We were able to win CAC, or the Capital Athletic Conference, which was also the first time in CNU history for field hockey to have won the CAC.” She played 17 minutes in the NCAA tournament loss to Kean University, which was ranked No. 8 in the nation. CNU begins the 2018 season at home Aug. 31 against in-state foe Bridgewater College, a member of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. “I think next season will also be a very successful season because even though we lost six seniors we have a strong incoming class, which will be to fill-in the loss of these players,” she said of 2018. “I believe we will be able to make it to the CAC [tourney] again. I believe we will be able to make up [the losses] and go far,” she said Monday. Practice begins Aug. 16 for the upcoming season.
“Lily crushed her freshman season and was a major contributor. Her passion to play is inspirational. Her teammates highly respect her for her ability to overcoming adversity. She is a great teammate and a joy to coach,” according to Carrie Moura, the CNU head coach. Bryngelson looked at several colleges, including Virginia Commonwealth University, Liberty University and the University of Richmond. But playing field hockey was important for her. “I picked CNU because when I was younger I went there for a field hockey camp and already began to fall in love with the school; then later I found out they had great academics, which basically sealed the deal,” Bryngelson said. “Also it is a small campus which appealed to me much more than larger schools. My major is criminology, and I will also be minoring in psychology. Other than field hockey, I wasn’t really involved with many things at school. This was because I was more focused on school for the first year so I can get a feel of life in college. Next year, however, I want to involve myself more into the other clubs/activities that CNU has to offer,” she added. She began playing field hockey in sixth grade and has played different positions in high school and in college. “I have lived in Stafford my entire life. In high school I mostly played center
midfield, sometimes playing forward or defense but it wasn’t very often. In college, however, a majority of the time I played left forward, sometimes though I was brought back to midfield [as a freshman],” she said. The Mountain View High graduate had the game-winning goal at Randolph-Macon University last year and had an assist against Washington and Lee University. She played four years for the Wildcats at Mountain View and she was all-state and all-area player of the year as a senior. She was part of state title teams as a
