School security up after threats
STAFFORD DEMOCRATS HOST FORUM

tafford County Public Schools has ramped up security at its schools following a Valentine’s Day mass shooting at a south Florida high school. Extra deputies from the Stafford County Sheriff ’s Office were sent to the schools this week, with a further precaution stemming from threats to two Stafford and Spotsylvania schools. On Sunday, parents were alerted that T. Benton Gayle Middle School in Stafford, along with Thornburg Middle School in Spotsylvania, was threatened on several social media sites. A photo of a handgun was posted along with the threats to the schools. An alert sent to parents and posted publicly read: “Stafford County Public Schools received information of a threatening message posted on social media over the weekend concerning T. Benton Gayle Middle School. The [Stafford County] Sheriff ’s Office is investigating the incident. As a precaution, deputies will provide extra security at the school. Please be assured the administration at Gayle Middle School will continue to investigate the source of the threat as well as to maintain vigilance to provide for student safety. We are taking this matter very seriously and ask for your help. If your child knows of the person who posted the threatening message, contact school administrators. Please encourage your student to report any threats to the school. The safety of students and staff is of the utmost importance for Stafford County Public Schools.”
The Stafford County Democratic Committee hosted a candidates’ forum at the Porter Library on Feb. 17, with the four candidates vying to represent the Democratic Party in the run for the 1st District seat in Congress held by Republican Rob Wittman. Ben M. Litchfield, chair of the committee, left, opened the forum for Ryan Sawyers, Vangie Williams, John Suddarth and Edwin Santana. Some 30 residents attended the 2-hour event. SUBMITTED

everal Stafford residents addressed the Stafford County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday with concerns about their children’s safety at school. Ashley Goff, of North Stafford, said that she has two daughters in school. “Dropping my kids off at school today was one of the scariest things I’ve done in a very long time – not knowing if those threats circulating the internet would happen, if they would be safe or make it home.” She was referring to social-media threats over the weekend directed at one Stafford school and one Spotsylvania school. The threats came in the wake of a south Florida mass shooting at a high school where 17 people died. “All kids should have the right to feel safe at school,” she said. “A lot of things need to be done to ensure children’s safety.”
Goff told the board that she’s talked to other concerned parents and collaborated over ideas to make schools safer. Some of the suggestions included metal detectors in schools or the use of a trial metal detector in one school; armed officers or retired military at entrances; more frequent activeshooter training for staff; groups that would help identify troubled students; more detailed information required to pick up students; and more secure side doors and entrances that put safety at risk. “We know this won’t happen overnight and could increase taxes but is something that needs to be done,” she said. “…These kids need to know that they matter and are important to us.” Kenya Wallach also spoke to the board. “If there’s ever a time for the board of supervisors, school board and community agencies to come together, it is now,” she said.
Stafford County Supervisor Jack Cavalier, R-Griffis-Widewater District, said there is less than one resource officer in each middle and high school, meaning that some officers are shared. “The one thing we can do here locally and that we should do locally… We need to come up with a better plan to secure our schools because they are targets. A lot of places are,” he said. Cavalier said he’d like to get the ball rolling on a plan that will not get shelved for three years. He wants the board to meet with sheriff ’s office and security personnel to devise a plan, acknowledging, “Yeah, it’s going to cost a little money. … I’m not going to stay silent on this. I want to see real results. We can provide better security than what we have now.” Andy Hayes, a teacher at T. Benton Gayle Middle School and the Stafford Education Association president, said that it can be extremely unpredictable and stressful to be a teacher. He asked for proper funding and lower class sizes, noting noticeably fewer students in class Tuesday. SUPERVISORS » PAGE 2

Interim Supervisor Thomas Coen, RGeorge Washington, said that further active-shooter training is needed and he believes that Stafford Sheriff David Decatur wants to do it. Supervisor Mark Dudenhefer, R-Garrisonville, said that he has spoken with Manassas resident Joe Schumate, who lost a daughter in the 2007 Virginia Tech school shooting. Schumate, who works locally, is willing to meet with Stafford officials, Dudenhefer said. He is part of a national and state organization that works on school safety THREAT
and with threat-assessment teams, he added. Super visors’ Chair woman Meg Bohmke, R-Falmouth, noted that would be discussions between her, the school chair and Superintendent Bruce Benson. She also brought up the importance of addressing mental-health issues in young people. Also at the meeting, the board of supervisors: * authorized reappropriated funding to replace a wastewater treatment facility at Hartwood Elementary School.
* paid tribute to Barbara Kirby, who died Feb. 4 at age 84. She was a member of the Stafford County Planning Commission and a passionate community volunteer, serving on historical, architectural review and cemetery committees over the years. “Stafford County has lost a kind and wonderful lady, said Bohmke. “Mrs. Kirby left an everlasting influence on the community.” Earlier this month, the Virginia House of Delegates adjourned in honor of Kirby, at the request of Bob Thomas, a new 28th
District delegate and a former Stafford supervisors. * honored Charles Schumate, who served as the county attorney for seven-and-a-half years. With 50 years of experience as an attorney, he is now retiring. * recognized black history month with visits from the NAACP Youth Council, the United Faith Christian Ministries Choir and other guests, including Stafford resident Gary Mercer, who helped with racial integration in Stafford County schools.
Some parents who posted said that there should be zero tolerance for threats, violence and bullying and that schools in general don’t take such matters seriously enough. Another parent recommended name badges for everyone and mandatory clear, mesh backpacks. Similar ominous social-media threats to those in Virginia have been issued across the country, causing uneasy trepidation and downright fear. The copycat threats, in some cases, have prompted lockdowns and some school closures out of precaution. There was no school Monday, Presidents’ Day, but students returned to school Tuesday.
Across Virginia, at least 10 schools have reported experiencing social-media threats that called for investigation and an increased police presence. None of the schools cancelled their classes and most of the threats were deemed not credible or attention-seeking hoaxes. The threats came in the wake of 17 deaths at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where a 19-year-old expelled student returned to shoot fellow students and staff.
In Richmond, a pep rally was cancelled at a Hanover school after threats were made to specific individuals on social media; however later, school officials said they did not believe a threat existed. Three schools in the Hampton Roads area experienced social-media threats, along with several other Virginia schools. In Norfolk, a teenager was arrested for threatening to shoot his classmates.

Many parents posting on Stafford County Public Schools’ Facebook page in response to the alert were worried while others said they trust local law enforcement and school officials in keeping their children safe. Others noted that violence can happen anywhere at any time. Those particularly worried wanted to know what would be done specifically to keep students safe, other than providing extra temporary security. One parent suggested metal detectors, random locker checks and knowing which parents have gun permits. Another said that heavier armed security, not just a resource officer, should always be on hand at each school. Cost should be no issue when it comes to students and staff safety, many said.

weapons in their homes and had actually used them with zero actual gun safety training. I relayed my concerns to Thomas’s predecessor; a non-veteran who failed to embrace the need for gun safety indoctrination or carry and conceal availability in our schools, which should be examined now. Clearly Marine veteran Thomas, with his keen knowledge of weaponry, has a more real-time perspective today about gun safety. Last year’s General Assembly passed legislation allowing school security to carry a firearm in the performance of their duties, if they meet jurisdictional mandates. This is another step in the right direction to protect our students. Locally, school officials should emphasize more use of 4-H clubs, the NRA or the Boy Scouts to offer expanded gun safety classes to students. But if the discussion locally and nationally continues to be one to outlaw all guns as assault weapons, there will be limited resolution. What is needed is to emphasize proper parenting, responsible legislation including drone use, armed school security, and gun safety education along with mental health screening--which will do more than misinform the public about a semi-automatic hunting rifle in the wrong hands. Daniel P. Cortez of Stafford is a Northern Virginia political writer and broadcaster. He is active in veterans and minority affairs and may be reached at dpcortez1969@yahoo.com. a pistol or revolver, and why would a respectable hunter want to go after deer or turkeys with an AR-15 or any weapon of its kind. Handgun use and rifles and shotguns that any respectable hunter would use, can be regulated. But these regulations must be tightened to prevent the indiscriminate sale and availability of guns. We should not have to have weapons to protect ourselves from each other. But the frightening thing is, we do! And since we do, we must ask ourselves, “What have we become?” Shootings occur daily in Washington, D.C., the city where laws to protect the nation’s citizen are supposed to be created. Mass shootings occur across the country in one school after another, in houses of worship, in places of recreation. Safe public places have become difficult to know. And, to our national sorrow, the problem has grown under the last several presidents--enough to make President Obama cry. And what of Congress? Do they not see that it is more than the right to keep and bear arms? Don’t they recognize that in their tunnel vision to protect legitimate gun owners, they have made guns more easily available to criminals, maniacs, the mentally ill and any GOLD others who should not be PAGE 5 able to have a gun?

If you haven’t been to a gun show, you must go. It will shock you. Visualize the largest exhibition hall you can imagine with table upon table filled with firearms of every type, size and firepower. Granted, it is all lawful, and laws and regulations are followed at these shows. But sadly, the existing laws and regulations don’t prevent someone who can meet the requirements from buying one or more weapons at every show and then selling them to someone else to use for criminal purposes. These shows occur all over the country on an ongoing basis, often twice a year and year after year. Now, I can understand a hunter wanting several guns to be prepared to hunt for different animals. A shotgun here, a rifle there, here a gun, there a gun; then there are guns everywhere. Have we been allowing this loosely regulated sale to go on for so long that we can no longer correct the problem? We can’t take all the guns back. We can’t say no to lawful purchasers and
find it difficult to create stricter regulations. Our presidents can’t seem to lead us out of this horrendous problem, and for some time Congress hasn’t seemed to want to. So for change to happen, will enough people say, “enough is enough” and demand that something be done? The faces of those murdered in Florida a few days ago should make us all say, “Enough is enough and this insanity must stop.” Or, will the faces of these innocents who died in Parkland and too many other places just blend into the everyday street murders and the make believe world of murder and death that fills our TV, movies and other entertainment? If we let that happen and we don’t demand that something be done, then we must ask ourselves, “What have we become?” Harvey Gold is a contributing writer at InsideNoVa/North Stafford. Family, faith at the heart of Anderson’s success » BY HUGH RIST
For InsideNoVa
For Mountain View senior Henrik Anderson, the journey from winning an elementary running challenge to a regional indoor track champion and then state runner-up in past years has been a long and winding road, so it’s fitting that both of the Group 5A region D titles he won Feb. 13 were distance titles. Anderson won both the 1,000- and 1,600-meter races at the regional event and finished second overall in cross country last fall. But his love affair with the track and running began as an elementary school student when his teachers issued a mile running challenge to their classes. “I think it started in second grade. I started running fast and realized I could beat a lot of people,” Anderson recalled. “That’s when I started really thinking I could make my mark as a runner.” Anderson came home and told his parents, Gary Anderson and Jennifer Matthews, that he had won and, he said, both of them told him they were proud of him and that running was probably in his bloodlines. After all, both his parents had been in running clubs (and his father had been a competitive runner) at Cedarville University, a Christian college in Cedarville, Ohio, a short drive from Columbus. Anderson added that family and faith have played key roles in his achieving the
success he has had on the track so far. He counts his father as “my biggest fan.” “He’s there every meet and gives me advice, probably as much as my coaches do,” Anderson said. “But he has always given me a lot of support, and it’s great to have him there and to know what it is like to have run competitively.” Unfortunately for both Andersons, Henrik had to deal with some adversity that pre-dated his high school success after his mother, a CIA employee working in Afghanistan, was killed in a suicide bombing in 2009. That was obviously not easy for Anderson to take. “It’s tough to lose your mother at age 9 and to grow up without a mother,” Anderson said. “But before every race, I pray for my dad and for my mother. I think about her and run in her memory. I know she’s looking down on me and is proud of me.” Mountain View coach Mike Porter said there are two ingredients that have guided Anderson’s success—mental toughness and adopting a “family” mindset. “Before the season, I talked to [Henrik] and we set goals, both individually and as a team,” Porter said. “I started talking to him about the family concept, and he and the other seniors on the team really bought in. I think given all that has happened to him, it was easy for him to buy in.” Although Anderson said the mental

aspect of running is what he enjoys most about competing as a distance runner, his mental toughness was tested once—and on a big stage. In 2016, he was the final leg of a 4 X 800 relay team at the outdoor state championships. The team led all the way until Anderson’s legs gave out during the final push and the team finished second. Anderson said the disappointment was palpable. “It was heartbreaking, but it taught me a lot,” Anderson said. “My goal now is to
run my best race and not think too much about how the other runners are doing.” It is with that mindset that Anderson will approach running at the indoor state meet at the Boo Williams Sports Complex in Hampton. Anderson said his experience running there before should help him do his best. “I’ve never heard a louder noise in track than during the 4 X 400 at that place,” Anderson said. “You basically have to shut out the crowd and not think about it. On the other hand, if they really get excited, you can get that extra push.” Anderson’s mental acuity has been shown through his race planning and ability to overcome adversity, but also through his academic success. He sports a 4.45 grade point average, which puts him in the top 5 percent of his class, he said. Whether Anderson wins or loses at states, the approach he said he will take is based on what he has learned in talking to Porter throughout his four years at Mountain View. “I tell [Henrik] and all our runners that if you run your race, you will give yourself a chance,” Porter said. “And if you run your best, you enjoy the moment and have fun. If someone beats you, that’s the way it goes, but you have to enjoy the moment.” Hugh Rist can be reached at StaffordNews@insidenova.com.

AUTOS WANTED Kendall Parker is just the 20th woman to score 1,000 points at the University of Mary Washington. SUBMITTED
Parker reaches milestone with Mary Washington basketball » BY DAVID DRIVER For InsideNova
It is rare for a college basketball player to score 1,000 points in her career. The feat is even more unusual for someone who came off the bench for most of her four-year career. But Kendall Parker defied the odds earlier this month at the University of Mary Washington, where the Stafford High graduate is a senior guard. Parker reached the mark on Feb. 10 at Wesley in Delaware when she came off the bench to score 16 points in an 86-44 win for the Eagles. “It was cool. I think I had seven points to go [entering the game],” Parker said last week. “In the first quarter I had hit two threes.” Then she scored on a fast-break layup to give her 1,001 career points. She said it helped to reach the milestone early in the game. “Get it off your mind. It was nice to get it, period. At the end of the game I got the game ball,” Parker said. She became the 20th woman to reach the mark at Mary Washington and the first since Brianne Comden reached the milestone when former teammate Parker was a sophomore. Comden ended her career in 2017 with 1,503 points, third on the alltime list. Parker started just nine of the first 23 games this season and still led the team in scoring at 10.3 points per contest. The Stafford resident made just two starts last year as a junior and rarely started in her first two seasons with the Eagles. “I have for most of my career,” she said of coming off the bench. “I don’t mind at all. I take the first few minutes of watching the game and what the other team is doing.” Parker also benefits from scouting reports from the coaching staff and watching tape of the opposing team. “Our coaching staff makes very detailed scouting reports. We are pretty prepared when it comes to that,” Parker said. “We get
film of the other teams. Since I have been here it has been very consistent with tape. I enjoy watching film.” What does Parker look for on the bench? “I will see which [opposing] players don’t have hands in our team’s shooting pockets,” she said. The Eagles, who had Senior Day on Feb. 17 against Marymount, hosted a CAC playoff game on February 20. The semifinals were slated for Feb. 22, with the title game Saturday, Feb. 24, also at the highest seed. Mary Washington was 13-11 overall and 12-5 in the CAC after a loss at home Feb. 14 to national power Christopher Newport, which was ranked No. 11 in the country in Division III before the game. There was an announcement that night about the Parker milestone because it was the first home game after she went over 1,000 points. “As a freshman she was pretty much a 3-point shooter. Now she can attack the rim and draw fouls. She gets to the foul line [more],” long-time Eagles coach Denna Applebury said earlier this season. Parker had several family members at the game at Wesley and also in Fredericksburg for the game against Christopher Newport. Her parents made a sign to show their support of her for the game at Wesley. Parker also attracted attention in high school from coaches at Lynchburg and Virginia Wesleyan. But she was set on attending Mary Washington. Parker is on track to graduate with a major in political science and a minor in business. She has a job lined up in human resources with a defense contractor near Quantico. Parker was a second-team allCAC pick as a junior and was named to the CoSIDA all-district women’s basketball team. She played in 28 games, and started two, and averaged 12 points per game. David Driver can be reached at StaffordNews@insidenova.com.
