America’s 250th Anniversary:
Celebrating Virginia’s Founding Legacy In Our Backyard
BY DAVID GRIFFIN
In 2026, the United States will celebrate 250 years of independence. While celebrations will take place across the nation, the Mount Vernon and Springfield area stands out for its deep connection to America’s founding story. Fairfax County was not simply near the birth of American democracy. Many of the ideas, decisions and acts of leadership that shaped the nation took place right here along the Potomac River.
As the country’s semiquincentennial approaches, our community stands at the heart of the American story, with a legacy that deserves recognition and pride.
Mount Vernon shows us Washington the general, but it also reveals Washington the landowner and businessman. After the war, he returned here determined to strengthen his estate and experiment with new agricultural methods. When he stepped away from power after the Revolution and again after two presidential terms, he set a precedent that still shapes the presidency today.
A few miles from the mansion stands George Washington’s Gristmill, a working reconstruction based on his original design. The mill operates much as it did in the 18th century, grinding grain with water power drawn from the nearby stream. It is easy to overlook, but it tells an important part of the story. Washington was not only a military leader. He was invested in commerce, trade, and the economic stability of the young nation. Together, Mount Vernon and the Gristmill remain anchors for tourism in our area and powerful reminders that leadership often begins at home.
George Washington’s Mount Vernon is at 3200 Mount Vernon Memorial Highway in Mt Vernon. Upcoming events and tickets are available at mountvernon.org.
Gunston Hall and the Virginia Declaration of Rights
Just down the road in Mason Neck stands Gunston Hall, the home of George Mason. While Washington commanded troops, Mason focused on the principles that would define the new republic.
In 1776, Mason drafted the Virginia Declaration of Rights. Its clear articulation of individual liberties influenced the United States Bill of Rights and constitutional systems beyond our borders. The protections Americans sometimes take for granted today, including freedom of the press and religious liberty, were first outlined here in Fairfax County.
Walking through Gunston Hall offers a different perspective on the founding era. It shifts the focus from battlefield strategy to constitutional debate. The ideas discussed within these walls helped shape the framework of American government and still guide public life.
Gunston Hall is at 10709 Gunston Road, Lorton, and upcoming events can be seen at gunstonhall.org/ visit/events/.
A National Tribute in your backyard.
Right here in Fairfax County—minutes from I-95 near Alexandria—the National Museum of the United States Army is a national tribute with free admission. Help sustain it for future generations with a gift to The Army Historical Foundation. Join us in celebrating 250 years of Army history and American history.

Virginia’s Leadership in a New Nation
Virginia’s role in shaping the nation extended well beyond Washington and Mason. The Commonwealth has produced eight U.S. Presidents, including Washington, Jefferson, Madison and Monroe. During the country’s formative decades, leaders from Virginia helped define the presidency’s powers, establish foreign policy direction, and shape how the Constitution would be understood and applied.
The Revolutionary War itself saw critical campaigns across Virginia, and the debates surrounding ratification of the Constitution were central to the nation’s future. The structure of our federal government and the balance between state and national power were refined through discussions held here.
As the country prepares to mark 250 years of independence, it is worth remembering how much of that early leadership came from Virginia soil.
National Museum of the U.S. Army
Fort Belvoir and the National Museum of the U.S. Army
The tradition of service that began in 1776 continues today at Fort Belvoir. One of the region’s largest employers, the installation plays an important role in supporting national defense. Military families, veterans and civilian professionals contribute daily to the strength of the Springfield area and surrounding communities.
Adjacent to the installation, the National Museum of the U.S. Army tells the story of American soldiers from the Revolutionary War to the present day. Visitors move through galleries that feature artifacts, personal accounts and immersive exhibits.
The experience makes clear that the legacy of the Continental Army did not end with independence. It has carried forward through every generation. Tickets to the museum are free and can be reserved at www.thenmusa.org.
In Mount Vernon and Springfield, that legacy is woven into the fabric of the community. It can be seen at local ceremonies, in the presence of military families throughout our neighborhoods, and in residents whose service continues long after they leave active duty.
The Workhouse Arts Center and the Turning Point Suffragist Memorial
The American story is also one of expanding rights. The Workhouse Arts Center, once the Lorton Reformatory, is part of that history. In 1917, suffragists were imprisoned there for protesting for the right to vote. Their treatment drew national attention and strengthened the movement that ultimately led to the Nineteenth Amendment.
Today, the arts center offers classes, events, event space rentals, exhibitions, artist programs and more, which can be seen at workhousearts.org.
Nearby, the Turning Point Suffragist Memorial (suffragistmemorial.org) honors the women who endured arrest and confinement in their pursuit of equality. Located in Occoquan Regional Park, the memorial ensures that their efforts are recognized as a defining chapter in the ongoing development of American democracy.
These sites remind visitors that the work of building a more inclusive nation has unfolded here as well.
A Community Rooted in Leadership and Service
CHAIRMAN
Pohick Church and River Farm
Pohick Church, established in 1774, still stands much as it did during the founding era. George Washington and George Mason both served as vestrymen there. The brick structure has endured for centuries and remains an active congregation.
It continues to serve as a gathering place, linking present-day residents to the civic and spiritual life of colonial Virginia. Find service times at pohick.org.
River Farm, now the permanent headquarters of the American
Horticultural Society, remains one of the most scenic and historic properties in our area. The 25-acre property was once part of George Washington’s Mount Vernon. Today, its gardens and open landscape host educational programs, community events and visitors who come simply to enjoy the setting.
River Farm connects the region’s agricultural heritage with a continued commitment to stewardship and preservation. Find plans to visit the historic River Farm at ahsgardening.org/ visit-river-farm/.

The Chamber’s commitment to education
Adeep and lasting commitment to education inspired the creation in 2005 of the Mount Vernon Springfield Education Partnership, a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to providing scholarships to local graduating high school seniors pursuing higher education in business-related fields.
Through this scholarship fund, the MVS Chamber is investing in the next generation of business and community leaders. The annual Chamber Golf Classic serves as the primary fundraiser, complemented by generous individual and corporate contributions throughout the year.
To date, the MVS Chamber has awarded more than $340,000 in scholarships to local students. In 2025 alone, 16 scholarships totaling $28,000 were presented to deserving graduates.
We are especially grateful to the 2025 business sponsors who funded individual scholarships: AHEAD, Andrews Federal Credit Union, Cisco, Ourisman Automotive Group, Mount Vernon Columbus Club, Reworld and Star City Grain Storage.
You are invited to join this meaningful
effort to prepare tomorrow’s leaders. Every contribution – large or small – makes a direct impact. With no administrative overhead, 100% of funds raised go directly to scholarships, ensuring your investment supports students and strengthens our community’s future.
