Christmas tree farm branches out The Mello family thrives at Oak Shade Farm in Rixeyville. Tucked away in bucolic Rixeyville lies a family flush with farm and home duties, but they wouldn’t have it any other way. While normally open to the public during the winter season to supply generations of families with trees for their holiday celebrations, Oak Shade Farm on Waterford Run Lane opened a store on its property in January to fill with their homemade bits and bobs from honey to wood bowls to dried mushrooms. For years, farm founder Jim Mello, 85, grew Shiitake mushrooms on the land by drilling holes into Oak logs, placing spores or spawn inside and sealing with wax. The farm has stacks and stacks of logs placed under tarps in order to force fruit - or force grow - the mushrooms before harvesting them to make some of their most desired products. However, growing and harvesting Shiitake mushrooms only scratches the surface of all that’s going on on Oak Shade Farm. Jim Mello, originally from Warren, Rhode Island, met his wife Sally Mello, 85, originally from Middletown, Connecticut, while the pair attended Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Jim Mello recalled seeing Sally for the first time in class when he saw her looking for a place to sit. He patted the chair next to him and invited her over, only for her to ignore the invitation and take a seat in the front row. It’d be a year later before they met officially. After marrying and having children, the Mellos found themselves living in Fairfax as Jim Mello, who earned his Ph.D. in paleontology, worked as the assistant director at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. After visiting central Virginia to hike on the weekends in the late 1970s, the Mellos fell in love with the tranquil atmosphere. “We just fell in love with the place,” Jim Mello said. “We couldn’t wait to get out here. She’d have the car packed on Friday night when I got home from work.” They bought a plot of woods in Rixeyville for ease of camping while hiking but soon found themselves visiting only to clear the land of trees. Once trees began to hit the ground, the Mellos found perhaps the biggest perk to their new adventure: a clear view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Before they knew it, they were

In 1985, they built a log cabin home in order to move there full time. In their older age, Jim and Sally Mello don’t quite make it up to the farmers market nowadays but are lucky some of their children have stayed close by to attend to some of the farm duties. Son Roger Mello and wife Ulrike “EK” Mayer-Mello live just beyond the tree line from the original log cabin. The couple built their home there a few years after marrying. When they’re not tending to the
shop or helping with other projects, the couple raise chickens and three Norwegian pygmy goats. One of Jim and Sally’s other sons, Craig Mello, won a Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 2006 for his work in the discovery of RNA interference. Business desires to establish historical mural Culpeper Cheese Company Owner hopes to bring more color downtown. In an attempt to remember one of Culpeper’s most vibrant Black residential areas, an area cheesemaker desires to memorialize its legacy on the side of his business. “As time has gone on, we’ve seen more of the recognition of what this area was to the community and how much it’s still there,” said Culpeper Cheese Company Owner Jeffery Mitchell. Adjacent to the Culpeper Municipal Building on South Main Street, Culpeper Cheese Company’s blank canvas is approximately 45’ by 26’. The white wall welcomes visitors to Culpeper’s vibrant downtown area via Route 29. “It’s just this big white elephant,” Mitchell said. The prospective mural will celebrate Sugar Bottom, a once vibrant neighborhood primarily near West Locust and South West streets in Culpeper where the Black community that lived there thrived. The neighborhood earned its name from a nearby spring where the water was said to taste sweet.

Upon driving into downtown, motorists would be greeted by a colorful mural on the present white wall. “It’s a perfect canvas, blank canva to celebrate something like this,” said Culpeper Cheese Company Creative Director in Residence Pat Cornwall. Mitchell and Cornwall intend for the mural to feature the people who lived there, buildings that formerly stood and a Blue Ridge backdrop featuring farm animals, being nods to dairy and cheese making. The pair drew inspiration for the mural from the 2022 Jazz Fest Poster by Terrance Osborune featuring a portrait of Jon Batiste. Its vibrant

colors and active scene made it an appealing composition to have against the backdrop of the more traditional looking historical murals throughout Culpeper. For the better part of nearly two years, Mitchell and Cornwall have dreamed of getting the project underway but have hit an all too familiar snag: finances. In order to get the ball rolling, a muralist must draw their prospective design, which costs a fee of upwards of $1,500. Once the plans are completed, Mitchell and Cornwall plan to apply for grants to help fund the actual mural and equipment needed to complete it like a lift. The shop is hoping to get some help from the public in helping commemorate another part of Culpeper’s history through artistic means. Earlier this month, Culpeper Renaissance, Inc., Windmore Foundation for the Arts and Culpeper downtown property and business owner, Brian Lam, partnered for another mural installation entitled

The Trailblazers in the 200 block of East Davis Street. The mural features Culpeper’s first African American town councilman and owner and operator of Lightfoot’s Grocery Henry Lightfoot, Culpeper’s first African American physician Dr. Elijah Barbour, female owner and operator of Boxwood House Restaurant and Motel Ruby Beck, Culpeper’s first African American police officer Roscoe Ford, a Culpeper native and talented baseball player elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006 Joseph Preston “Pete” Hill, the first female police officer in the Town of Culpeper Ella Drumgoole and a single soldier from the United States Colored Troops, representing the approximately 120 African American men who left Culpeper to join the Union Army. A quote from late author and civil rights activist, James Baldwin is also adorned on the wall. “Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” maria@culpepertimes.com

Local woman uses pregnancy documentary to raise awareness A one-in-a-billion opportunity caught on film. BY
Sarah Langland
When Dani Izzie found out she was pregnant with twins in late 2019, she did what many pregnant women do; shared her news on Facebook. But unlike most women, Izzie faced an uphill battle in light of her disability that would make her pregnancy both challenging and dangerous. Award-winning documentary director and friend Brad Allgood followed her pregnancy updates when he approached Izzie and her husband, Rudy, about making a documentary. “(I) learned that only five quadriplegic women in the world have living twins, so capturing Dani’s journey would be a one-in-a-billion opportunity,” Allgood said. At first, Izzie was reluctant. “(I wanted Allgood to) get it and show a glimpse of real-life and (my) authentic lifestyle.” she said. “Moms with disabilities are rarely seen.” She saw the documentary, entitled Dani’s Twins, as an opportunity to use the sensationalism of her story to help people rethink disabilities as more than a diagnosis. Filming began in February 2020, however, things took a turn in March when stay-at-home orders were passed down from federal and state governments due to the spread of COVID-19. Due to her high-risk pregnancy and a 30% lung capacity, Izzie took the pandemic very seriously. Initially, Izzie was crushed when the film project derailed, but both she and the documentary team were determined to tell her story. “We worked together to find a solution,” Allgood said. “The only option was for Dani to take the reins and film herself.” Equipped with cell phones, ring lights, microphones and a camera, the Izzies became filmmakers.
Sometimes when filming, Izzie would talk to the camera as if she were talking to her unborn babies. She shared, “on a personal level, beyond what this will do socially, I thought of my girls seeing this. I want them to see the strength and determination that Rudy and I have. I want them to see how to be brave.” She was so dedicated to documenting the process, when her water broke at her home in Madison, she filmed herself in labor on the way to UVA Hospital in Charlottesville. “(The project) was very difficult physically, emotionally and mentally,” she recalled. Her hands were not steady, and she experienced frequent lightheadedness. In addition, blackouts lead her to lie down most of the time. Despite the physical challenges, she impressed herself. “was really proud of her body. It was empowering to create a baby in a body that’s kind of broken.” “Insofar as my disability intersects with my role as a parent, I feel capable
and complete,” Izzie said. “The love and joy in this experience is nourishing and limitless.” The documentary premiered at the Mountainfilm Festival in Telluride, CO, on May 26, and will be followed by a virtual festival, on May 31-June 7. Tickets can be purchased at https://
mountainfilm.eventive.org/welcome. “My hope is that the film will resonate within the disability community, encourage those who have been doubted, or self-doubted and contribute to the larger push to normalize disability and dismantle barriers.”
Wellspring welcomes Spanish-speaking practitioner Dr. Juan Carlo MunozGonzales previously worked with Wellspring in 2017. In an effort to better serve Culpeper’s growing Spanish-speaking population, Wellspring Health Services welcomed back Internal Medicine practitioner Dr. Juan Carlo Munoz-Gonzales this past fall.
“Dr. Munoz has been welcomed back to Wellspring and the community with open arms,” said Wellspring CEO Dr. Khalid Athar. “Many of his previous patients have started coming back to see him.” Munoz-Gonzales is from Puerto Rico and earned his degrees from National Autonomous University of Mexico Guadalajara, Mexico and Ponce School of Medicine in Puerto Rico. He previously worked with Wellspring from 2017 through 2018 before

moving to a practice in Fredericksburg to practice Colonial Internal Medicine. “Having a doctor that can speak a patient's native language removes barriers to quality healthcare,” Athar continued. “I believe that it also provides a sense of comfort. As for Munoz-Gonzales’s priorities, they lie in continuing to care for the community through his expertise. “I want to continue integrating evidence-based medicine with compassion and empathy to our community.”

While molding dangerous hot glass may seem like a thrill out of reach for most, artist Cody Long wants to shatter the hurdles in place to bring students into the creative world of glassblowing. “People have been asking me for years to do (classes),” he said. “But I wanted to make a few projects that really anybody can make.” Owner of Wanderlust Gifts, Long previously operated out of a storefront in Culpeper, but closed during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic to focus on his studio when juggling the two along with family life became too much to balance. With his new found freedom, Long recently elected to open his studio to people interested in expanding their creative horizons. “I’ve done classes before but a few months ago was when I really started to market it,” he said.

Students learn the basics and leave class with a few mementos to remember the experience. “You can come in your first time and have no artistic experience and you can make a pretty good pendant or marble.” For ease of learning, Long prefers to teach classes one-on-one. “There’s a lot of things that go into it where it’s easier to pay attention and actually absorb what you’re learning if it’s one-on-one.” For those who are already familiar with glassblowing, Long offers lessons in new techniques. Long has a decade of experience in glass, adding the first time he put glass into the fire it ignited a passion.
“I always wanted to be an artist,” he said. “It’s probably the first thing I ever remember wanting to be other than an astronaut, but I’m still working on that.” “I’ve put in a lot of hard work, and through many ups and downs, cuts and burns, I’ve found myself living my dream all of which would not have been possible without the support of my family, a close group of friends and this amazing community I call home,” Long said. One of the most rewarding and biggest parts of Long’s job, however, comes from working with families who want to solidify the memory of their deceased loved one in glass. “It’s not something I really imagined myself doing but it's a much
more gratifying and fulfilling type of product to make. Branded as Memoriam Glassworks, Long incorporated ashes into his custom made pieces including a recent endeavor that included making a cherry tree to celebrate a man who found joy in climbing them in his youth. Long also makes a lot of different glasses like tasting flutes for brides and grooms for weddings. maria@culpepertimes.com

REC’s Power Supplier Announces Rate Increase
A
s a result of higher natural gas prices, Old Dominion Electric Cooperative (ODEC) has implemented a rate increase to cover the higher generation costs resulting primarily from those natural gas price increases. Along with 10 other electric cooperatives in Virginia Delaware and Maryland, REC is a partial owner of ODEC. “In recent years we have not seen any mid-year rate change by ODEC, but greater volatility in the markets and the higher costs for natural gas used to generate electricity have necessitated this rate increase,” said Brian Doherty, Managing Director — External Affairs at REC. “Similar costs are being faced
by other utilities in the mid-Atlantic and other regions of the country – this is not unique to us here in Virginia.” The high winter demand for natural gas coupled with cold temperatures (particularly in January) impacted the price of natural gas, and signifi cant volatility on some days drove short-term prices even higher. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and other global economic factors further exacerbate price increases and volatility. “REC works year-round to keep expenses as low as possible,” Doherty said, “and we want to be as transparent as possible about these increasing costs.”

Technical Center moves to solar energy Josh Moody had the opportunity to take his classroom learning to another level this year, quite literally Motorists driving past the Culpeper Technical Education Center (CTEC) recently may have noticed the roof has taken on a new look this spring. Over 1,200 solar panels have been added to the building thanks to a Culpeper County High School (CCHS) CTEC student who had a hands-on role in the project. During the fall semester, senior Josh Moody completed the CTEC Electrical I course that included OSHA 10 certification, which made him eligible to interview for an internship position with Affordable Energy Concepts (AEC). AEC offered Moody the opportunity to be a part of the CTEC solar team. “I was just hoping it would help me create a nice looking resume to help get a job, but it just turned out perfect,” Moody said about signing up for the class. “I am not a school person, I am a hands-on person, so this has been perfect for me.” Moody estimates that he has put about 80 hours into the project since he began in December. “While the CTEC Electrical course did not address photovoltaic energy specifically, the basic concepts of electrical gave Josh the foundation that he needed to be a part of the solar project,” CTEC Principal Shaun Summerscales explained. The CTEC solar project, which started in December 2021, includes 1,218 solar panels that essentially fill the entire CTEC roof. In addition, a ground mounted solar array serves as an interactive educational classroom component for CTEC students. “The addition of the solar panels will allow CCPS to showcase green energy to students of all ages,” Summerscales said. “The ground-mounted unit will allow students to see solar panels up close.” The CTEC system is unique because the technology allows CCPS to monitor each individual solar panel

The overall project size is 548.1 kW (kiloWatts), utilizing 450 watt solar panels, explained AEC Project Manager Zach Campbell. The system is estimated to produce around 650,000 - 760,000 kiloWatt hours or 650-760 megaWatt hours annually.” Based on these estimates, the building will generate more power than it will consume. Any additional energy produced will be credited back to Culpeper County Public Schools against its energy usage. Within the next month, CCPS plans to hold a “Power On” ceremony to celebrate the completion of the CTEC solar Project. AEC extended Moody a job offer for future employment following his

In its final exhibition at the place where it was born four decades ago, the Middle Street Gallery in Washington will present a combined show of its member-artists from May 21 through June 19. There will be a reception for the public from 3-5 p.m. on June 4. In the show, “New Horizons,” the 19 members of the non-profit arts cooperative will look forward to life at their new gallery, located nearby. And some of the art will recall earlier times at the gallery and in Rappahannock County. Cathy Suiter’s painting of the local Blue Ridge Mountains has dark shadows in the foreground, but a stunning sunny-day view of autumn trees and mountains in the distance. “When the day is overcast and foggy, it’s difficult to see our horizon,” she said. “But I see the horizon for Middle Street Gallery as clear and focused, just like a Blue Ridge autumn day.” Similarly, Thomas Spande’s watercolor of the Hazel River, also in autumn, combines views of the bright and cheerful flow of water over dark and somewhat ominous rocks. Paulo Neuhaus will show his iPhone photographs, including Rappahannock County Moonrise, for which he quotes the late comedian George Carlin, “There are nights when the wolves are silent and only the moon howls.” Phyllis Northup presents a watercolor of a delicately beautiful wild Trillium discovered on a misty spring morning along the Stony Man Trail in Shenandoah National Park. “There are many ways to find new

Digital media artist Jim Serbent offers a large “digital collage incorporating original fractal imagery and video feedback,” realized as a photographic print, calling it “a fitting composition for our gallery’s transition to its new life in its new space.” Anita Amrhein offers two vividly colored paintings of women surrounded by mysterious and mythical figures. One of the paintings asks, “Who should have a say about women’s lives?” and the other, “Has the pandemic receded enough to safely welcome visitors to our homes again?”
Later this summer Middle Street Gallery, which is keeping its venerable name, will move a few blocks away to Jett St., between Main St. and Gay St., with an entrance on Main. The gallery, www.middlestreetgallery.org and (540) 675-1313, is open Fri., Sat., and Sun. from 11-5 p.m.

How did Culpeper get its name? BY
Sally Humphries
If you live in Culpeper, you may wonder about that name. If you are a newcomer, you may want to spell it with two “p’s” as in Culpepper. But no, it’s one “p” because Lord Culpeper of England spelled it that way, and you know how fussy the British are. Culpeper’s story centers on Thomas Culpeper, second Baron of Thoresway in the 1600s. King Charles II gave Thomas’ father and six other loyal followers over five million acres of land in Virginia. It was located between the Potomac and Rappahannock rivers, an area called the Northern Neck. This was in 1649, the same year the King went into exile. Parliament, however, sold the King’s Northern Neck land grant much to the dismay of his loyal followers. When King Charles II regained his throne in 1660, the political maneuvering began to regain what had been lost. Sir Thomas Culpeper ended up with an annual salary of 600 pounds and the promise of the governorship of Virginia, as soon as it became available. It became available in July of 1677. Sir Thomas, however, was in no hurry to govern. He stayed in England for three years, and allowed Sir Henry Chicheley to act as governor. Finally, in May of 1680, he sailed to Virginia at the King’s command and stayed until August. His assignment was to impose taxes on the colonists as well as restrictions on their governing bodies. He left Chicheley, as the Lieutenant Governor, to face the consequences. Rioting began and threatened to spread. Safely back in England, Culpeper worked diligently to regain control of the five million acres in Virginia called the Northern Neck, which had slipped away almost thirty years ago. His Majesty, however, was more concerned with the colonial rioting and ordered Culpeper to go immediately to Virginia to deal with it. Culpeper obeyed in his own way and time. Once accomplished to his satisfaction, he headed home, but it cost him the governorship. He had left his post without getting royal permission. His final years included more speculation in colonial lands. He petitioned James II, the new king, to renew his Northern Neck land grant, which included what is now Culpeper County. The petition was granted. ➤ See Name, Page 19

VO I C E S Summertime is for reading BY
Last week I attended the wedding of my niece in Brooklyn, New York. My newly married niece is more like a daughter to me. I was gratified to learn that her now husband is an avid reader. He has quite a nice book collection in his apartment especially considering the size of Brooklyn brownstone apartments. I was very pleasantly surprised to see the items they created for the wedding reception. One is a combination seating card/wedding guest giveaway at the
Gregg Grunow
reception that is a bookmark with the name and table number for each guest with the bride and grooms names and wedding date at the top. The other item is the table number on each of the nine tables in the reception hall. There was a plaque with an open book picture that stated the Chapters of our life. Each of the nine chapters had a bit of history about the bride and groom from birth to the present written on them. The chapter numbers were the table numbers. I have been
a librarian since the bride and I met when she was a young child. I would like to think I at least partly inspired their choice of wedding give away and table numbering system but realistically it was probably the groom and brides love of books. This brings me to the Culpeper County Library’s upcoming summer reading program. I believe a love of reading developed in childhood will carry on into adulthood like the bride and groom above. The Library
summer reading program will begin on June 1 and run until July 30. There will be activities for children, teens and adults. Stop by the Library or visit the Library Homepage for details. Gregg Grunow Gregg Grunow is the Director of the Culpeper County Library.
Bingo funds support community BY
Culpeper Mid-Day Lions and Culpeper 92 Lions Clubs work jointly on a number of projects. The primary fund raising project for both clubs is Bingo. We hold Bingo every Sunday night, except Easter and Super Bowl Sunday at Brandy Station Volunteer Fire Department located at 19601 Church Street in Brandy Station. The doors open at 4:30 and early birds begin at 6:30.
Lynn Garver
There are three progressives and a $1000 Jackpot coverall game at the end. We also sell a large variety of pull tab games. The Virginia Gaming Commission requires us to donate 10% of the gross receipts from bingo to charity. The funds from bingo allow us to give scholarships to graduating seniors and purchase eyeglasses and exams and hearing aids for Culpeper County
residents who meet the qualifications. The two clubs support many of the Culpeper County 501c3 organizations. We offer financial support to SAFE, CARS, Literacy Council, Food Closet, Winter Heat Shelter, Soap Box Derby, Antioch School Supplies, Senior Center and Team Jordan to name a few. We’d love to have you join us for bingo any Sunday night. Bring a group of friends and support your local
Lions Clubs. Bring your own food and beverage and lucky charms.. Hope to see you there. Lynn Garver Lynn Garver is the Secretary of the MidDay Lions Club
Infamous Last Words BY
“In America evil will not win, I promise you. Hate will not prevail, and white supremacy will not have the last word..” - President Joseph R. Biden. There are a couple of things that the President and I can agree on: • That we are still in a battle for the soul of America. • That white supremacy is in fact, a domestic terrorism that mustn’t be swept under the rug,. but courageously confronted. There the President and I diverge, however, is on the premise that the problem itself lies only with an aberrant and misguided few; I’m not willing to dismiss this particular cancer to the fringes of our society or to those who peddle the rhetoric for profit and political gain. No, this is U.S. (pun intended) and the fissures along racial lines are much deeper and broader; as a matter of fact, they just might be inextricably tied to the
22
VOICES
Dr. Uzziah Harris
very identity of America Itself. Without the stained legacy of slavery, racism, and white supremacy, America wouldn’t be who She is. Without the 244 years of free labor whether it be infrastructure building, crop harvesting, and/or child rearing; not to mention the subsequent years of Jim Crow legislation, political disenfranchisement, educational denial, and economic exploitation and theft. People are where they are today (at least in part,) because of the legacy they’ve inherited and continue to stand on. To act as if we are totally divorced from and inoculated from both the benefits and trauma of the past is naive at best. Even more so, to act as if 50-60 years of legislation, an African-American President, and a begrudging apology without concrete recompense clears the slate is even worse. One could go on and on about the past however that wouldn’t solve anything. Talking about the past brings forth accusations of critical
race theory (it might even exacerbate the situation). The bigger question is who are We (the People,) to become? I’m listening to our words, our current discourse to get some sense of our direction. One says “the KKK is a terrorist organization,” another says “so is BLM…” One says “white supremacy is a virus from which we must be cured,” another “have you never heard of black supremacy, you’re a bigot…” One says, “systematic racism must be identified and uprooted,” while others will say “give me one example of racism today, that is in the past (get over it.)” One says “America still has a way to go in terms of race relations,” and yet others “they are anti-American and if they don’t like it they should fo back to their own country…” We say that this is not who we are, so who are we then? White Supremacy will not have the last word? Why then is it the only voice speaking? What will it take for
U.S. to truly get the message, will we have to lose this democracy that we love so dear? Now more than ever, we must drown out the voices of hate and bigotry or I’m afraid that none of U.S. will be doing much talking any longer. “An empire toppled by its enemies can rise again, but one which crumbles from within - that’s dead forever,” or said simpler in the words of Hall of Famer Terry Bradshaw, “all great empires die from within.” If we don’t get it together my fellow Americans, we are going to tear ourselves apart. Let’s watch what we say and how we say it; as what is said is not only an indicator of what’s in the heart but an informer of one’s intentions and actions to come. Dr. Uzziah Harris Dr. Uzziah Anthony Harris is the President of NAACP Culpeper Chapter.

T
he Culpeper Times is excited to bring readers the final results for the 2022 Best of the Best thanks to this year's sponsor Be a Culpeper Local. There are many new winners this year and several others who have won again! The popular contest continues to generate more votes each year since we went to online voting only. This year was no exception. We continue to add new categories by recommendations and encourage readers to continue letting us know of new business ventures. Tom Spargur Take a peek inside to see a complete winners list. Banners and plaques are displayed throughout the marketplace. Congratulations to all the winners! The Culpeper Times publishes the Best of the Best contest each year and has become a section both businesses and readers look forward to seeing.
W
ith a population of approximately 51,000, Culpeper County is where we live, play, work, eat, and shop. Because of this, we want our town, county and schools to thrive and become the best they can be. With a few cents on the dollar being returned to the county via Virginia State sales tax, Be a Culpeper Local works to increase those funds by inviting every Culpeper resident to think about where they spend their money. Many of us commute out of Culpeper and tend to spend money in other communities. However, the next time you decide to pull out your wallet, think about the sales tax you are depositing in that county’s general fund and school system. Studies have shown that for every $100 spent in a locally owned business, $48 stays and circulates in the community. When you spend a dollar, consider the value of your choice, to yourself and to your community. Recently, Be A Culpeper Local launched a new all-inclusive directory accustomed with an interactive map. Staff have been visiting with businesses to show our appreciation for being a part of the Culpeper community as well as celebrating those businesses for National Small Business Week. Be A Culpeper Local will be launching a new social media campaign and “See How It’s Made” videos highlighting Culpeper businesses and are in the process of bringing new programming to further assist Culpeper businesses via free webinars and events.

NEW CONSTRUCTION FOR SALE
Thank you for voting us the Best of the Best Home Renovation Company! Jim Gearing has been building homes in Culpeper and surrounding areas since 1994. As part of Westco Builders, Jim takes pride in building homes and communities where his clients are proud to call home. It’s all about listening to the client, building on success and knowing the area. It’s also about thinking outside the box and planning for the long term with the community in mind. But what makes Westco different and special is that they are a true local builder. Their employees live here, their subcontractors live here, their suppliers are from here. Their profits, investments, taxes and income stay here in Culpeper. Westco is a family-owned business that cares about Culpeper, operates in the area and wants to help it grow and prosper. Jim and the team like what they do, put their heart and soul into their work, and they can help make your new home ideas come to life. They are a local builder that believes in giving back because they live and work here. They want to make a difference.
Jim Gearing, President
It fits with Jim’s philosophy: You get out of it what you put into it. And he gives 100 percent. Jim started young with summer jobs in building and landscaping, growing into new construction and real estate. The new housing development market really sparked his interests and shaped his Realtor career. That is where RE/MAX Crossroads fits into the winning equation. Jim has been a Realtor with RE/MAX Crossroads for the past 31 years, and together they play a vital role in the success of Westco through new home sales and marketing. As a builder and Realtor, Jim has double the joy in helping his clients achieve the American Dream of homeownership in the Culpeper area.
