meet the BEST OF STAFFORD 2025

InsideNoVa decided to continue our annual Best of Stafford survey this year – and apparently you are glad we did.

The online voting was conducted in August, and we received a record 33,202 votes across 111 categories. The votes were cast by over 2,900 individual readers – another record. Nearly 1,000 businesses, organizations and individuals received nominations or votes.

Some of the most popular categories – based on the number of votes – were similar to prior years, including Best Personal Trainer, Best Gym, Most Community-Involved Business

and Best Customer Service.

You also apparently like your Hairstylists, as that category received the most nominations. We’re delighted to announce the winners on the pages that follow. Over the next few months, many of them will proudly display banners and plaques showcasing their award. The writeups and profiles were submitted by or prepared in cooperation with the winning businesses.

Congratulations to all of the winners – and everyone who received votes – and thank you for making Stafford special!

uBreakiFix by Asurion Stafford

BreakiFix by Asurion Stafford, a veteran-owned business, has been repairing computers and other electronic devices since it opened in April 2019. Owned by TJ Summerlin IV, uBreakiFix is the anchor of the business endeavors run by him and his wife NiTorya.

A retired Marine in her own right, NiTorya Summerlin runs 4 Tresses Ñ Serenity Natural Hair Care Salon, located next to uBreakiFix.

Before opening the electronics repair shop, TJ Summerlin served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a logistician at Marine Corps Base Quantico. The owner said that he had been a tinkerer his entire life, a curiosity that included playing with Legos as a child.

Summerlin said that curiosity led him into electronics and eventually running a successful repair business from his home. Summerlin learned about the uBreakiFix franchise opportunity in 2017 and opened his location about a year and a half later.

He said that while repairing electronics is the heart of the business, its purpose runs much deeper. Summerlin has made community impact a cornerstone of his work through the Future Fixers Program, an initiative that gives students real-world exposure to technology and hands-on repair experience. In partnership with Stafford County Public Schools, uBreakiFix Stafford repaired more than 100 of the district’s Chromebooks in 2024, ensuring students had the tools they needed to stay connected and keep learning

Summerlin also partnered with Chickfil-A to provide free breakfasts for the students – a gesture he says makes the whole endeavor feel like “a true community effort.”

Electronic repair work can offer some interesting stories. Summerlin related a story about a customer who accidently left

her phone on top of her car. Before she realized where she’d left it, the customer’s phone had slid off of the car and was run over by another vehicle.

“It looked hopeless,” he said. “But we

managed to bring it back to life just long enough for her to recover irreplaceable family photos.”

Summerlin said that the company’s greatest success is in establishing uBreakiFix as the face of electronics repair in Stafford.

“People know they can count on us for everything from phones to computers, and that trust means a lot,” he said.

Summerlin’s goals for the future of uBreakiFix include keeping up that reputation of being Stafford’s go-to repair shop. He also wants to grow the Future Fixers program into a year-round academy to teach more students how to fix electronics.

Chewookie Mobile Grooming Pet Salon

1130 INTERNATIONAL PKWY, SUITE 117, FREDERICKSBURG, 22406 CHEWOOKIE.COM (540) 848-4250

Since opening in March 2022, the veteran-owned Chewookie has been going door-to-door to give the area’s dogs quality grooming from the comfort of their homes. The sight of Chewookie’s mobile grooming van is a relief to dog owners who struggle to get a frightened pooch to the groomer.

The existence of Chewookie is due to the owners’ difficult experience of finding a professional groomer for their own dogs, Star and Popcorn.

“None of the mobile groomers would accommodate larger dogs [over 25 pounds} or senior dogs with medical issues,” said

owners Jody and Charlotte Reynolds. “We understand the frustration of trying to care for your pet and not being able to find the appropriate professional service.”

Before opening Chewookie, the Reynolds were married for 25 years and had different experiences. Jody is retired from the U.S. Army, a graduate of Georgetown University in Washington D.C. and was working in defense contracting.

Charlotte worked as a receptionist and veterinarian’s assistant at Stafford Animal Hospital. In addition to being a certified grooming professional, her life has revolved around being a caregiver for pets.

When the pair opened Chewookie, they began mobile operations from their home in North Stafford with a small list of clients. As their business grew, they moved into a

warehouse in South Stafford but continued to meet the pets where they lived for their grooming needs.

The Reynoldses said that developing Chewookie’s reputation in the 3½ years since opening has been their greatest success. The pair want to continue that growth into the foreseeable future, hoping to keep it scalable and manageable.

As far as what makes Chewookie stand out from other pet groomers, the owners say it’s more than one aspect that has made them stand out and develop their reputation.

“We recognize grooming is an integral part of your pet's health and we communicate regularly with local veterinarians to discuss our clients' needs and concerns,” they said. “We value quality over quantity, strive to create a stress-free environment for the pets, our team and our clients. We are very particular about the products and equipment we use and have very low employee turnover.”

Chewookie’s success can be summed up as the result of looking for a good service and filling that void with a service in the way that one would want.

Barley Naked Brewing Co.

15 TECH PARKWAY, SUITE 109, STAFFORD, 22556 • BARLEYNAKED.COM • (540) 623-4475

Since opening in October 2018, Barley Naked has strived to treat the members of its community as though they are family. Briana Boyd, the brewery’s head of social media and marketing, said Barley Naked sees this building of a close-knit community as part of its success.

“We greet everyone by name,” she said. “We take the time to make sure they find a beer they truly enjoy drinking and make sure they are comfortable and happy in the brewery. So many people say that Barley Naked is just like Cheers.”

According to Boyd, it’s not just everyone in the brewery knowing the name of each of their customers. It also comes down to the beers themselves. Many of its beers have

won national and International awards.

Those many awards include a gold medal at the World Beer Cup and Great American Beer Festival for the brewery’s Rock Hill Irish Red. Boyd said much of the credit for the quality of those beers goes to head brewer Brady Fox, who is lauded as the brewhouse’s resident genius.

“Every recipe he brews uses clean ingredients, traditional techniques and tastes incredible,” Boyd said.

The brewery also has the distinction of being among the many veteran-owned businesses in the county. It was founded by Barry Boyd, a former member of the U.S. Coast Guard, who took his passion for homebrewing and turned it into a

community staple.

After retiring in 2014, Boyd took the next step and worked at Black Cap Brewery in Pennsylvania, where he learned the art of brewing under his teacher Greg Bentley. Boyd honored his teacher by naming one of his beers after the Pennsylvania brewer.

Boyd didn’t go at the whole endeavor alone and credits his staff as being integral to the success of Barley Naked. This includes his wife, Missy, and other part owners Gary Preston and Bill Ayers.

As for what the future holds, Barely Naked was preparing for its upcoming Oktoberfest celebration, which was Oct. 11, and according to Boyd the brewery wants it to be its biggest celebration yet. This celebration continues the brewery’s goal of building the bonds within its community and to have fun while doing so.

“Nothing brings us greater joy than to see the community come together and overcome our differences and just be happy,” Boyd said. “At the brewery, everyone is a Barley Naked friend.”

Barry Boyd, founder of Barley Naked.

Pacheco’s Hardwood Floors

Since 2019, Pacheco’s Hardwood Floors has been one of Stafford County’s gotos for hardwood floor installations.

Founders Enos and Amy Pacheco said they strive to “make flooring issues easy to navigate and have a solution for every budget using transparency, consistency and hard work.”

The crew at Pacheco’s comes with a great amount of experience. After graduating from high school in 1999, Enos Pacheco

moved to the Northern Virginia area and went straight into the hardwood floor industry. But according to his wife and business partner, Amy, Enos’ over 25 years in the business has not dampened his interest in the art of hardwood flooring.

“He loves the skill and challenge of the work and seeks perfection in everything he does,” she said. “He is very knowledgeable with different techniques to achieve any look.”

Amy Pacheco went on to talk about the custom work her husband is capable of due to his vast experience. This includes not just specialty designs and patterns for the floors, but also refinishing all elements of stairwells.

Amy Pacheco was a dental assistant for 15 years before she and her husband opened their flooring business. A native of Northern Virginia and the Washington area, she holds dual master’s degrees in health care administration and business management and is also fluent in Spanish.

“She used the skills gained from that field

in management, sales, organization, client satisfaction, marketing and maintaining a rigorous schedule for multiple doctors to multiple offices,” said Enos Pacheco. “[She also] created office manuals, business goals and office procedures for newly opened dental practices.”

The couple said they opened their business in 2019 to fill a need for competent skilled artisans specifically for hardwood flooring needs. Their combined talents give customers what they call “unique skills” of high quality work and customer service.

The Pachecos said that their greatest success is building a strong base of repeat and referral business. As far as the future goes, they plan to continue offering “an exceptional service-based option for hardwood flooring.” They also hope to add more highly skilled artisans to the team in order to meet their clients’ needs, not just in their home area but to grow into other regions as well.

Full Distance Brewing

650 CORPORATE DRIVE, SUITE 101, STAFFORD, 22554

(571) 931-0309

If one is looking for a place to take a date, to unwind after the 9-to-5 grind or a good work environment, then that place may just be veteran-owned Full Distance Brewing.

Founded by Doug and Jo-el Meyer, the brewery was established in 2019 and officially opened its taproom to the public in 2023 in North Stafford. Since then, patrons have come to enjoy their litany of craft beers, from the pickle sour to the bourbon barrel-aged.

A U.S. Marine, Doug Meyer built a career in business operations and leadership. This led to his managing significant programs as president of a small

business in Northern Virginia. But the passion for brewing beer was always….well, brewing beneath the surface.

Encouraged by Jo-el, what began as a garage hobby for the former Marine grew into something bigger as friends, family and neighbors kept asking for more of what he was concocting.

“The inspiration came from a love of both brewing and building community,” Jo-el said. “Doug wanted to create a place where people could share a pint, connect and celebrate life’s moments such as after a long run, successes or simply a night out with friends. Full Distance Brewing was

built on the idea that great beer tastes even better when it brings people together.”

Full Distance Brewing gets its name from Doug Meyer’s penchant for running. A triathlete, he equates the name with celebrating the concepts of challenges, commitment and the satisfaction that comes with racing, training and pushing limits.

Doug Meyer said that the brewery’s greatest success is the community it’s built. He said they wanted to create a place where customers feel welcome and respected. That effort has earned them support from that community – and they’ve won nine Untapped Community Awards over the past two years for their beers.

Full Distance’s goal is to keep growing as the local community grows. The company also wants to continue expanding its beer lineup, its events and its space. It also seeks expansion by getting its custom beers into local bars and taprooms across the state. Currently, many of the brewery’s selections can be found on tap in a dozen bars and restaurants in the area.

Monarch Pool Care

Monarch Pool Care is the result of hard work by Leonard and Ruth Garavalia.

The husband-and-wife team of 26 years began Monarch as a part-time business from their home, beginning in March 2006. The couple ran the fledgling business while working full-time jobs at a legal and engineering firm in the telecommunications industry for over 16 years.

It wouldn’t be too long before the parttime business became a full-time endeavor, resulting in opening Monarch’s first retail storefront in May 2007. It wouldn’t be long before that location became too small for their operations.

“We outgrew our first location in the first few years,” said Ruth Garavalia. “Next, we

moved to 909 Garrisonville Road, which doubled our floor space. This location had much more visibility and we grew out of that space even faster.”

After 20 years, the Garavalias have grown Monarch to more than 20 full-time employees.

Ruth Garavalia said the reason the couple started Monarch is the same reason that their business stands out in the Stafford community. That reason is care.

Before setting up their business, the Garavalias said they had a bad experience with a business while researching installing their home pool in 2006. Their impression was that those particular professionals didn’t seem to care about what they were doing. In starting Monarch, the couple learned from their bad experience and took the time to learn the ins-and-outs of pool care and dove further into the industry itself.

When they decided to start Monarch, they knew they wanted to work with the best in all aspects of the business.

“We try to provide a personal, empathetic experience with every customer transaction,” they said. “Beyond the human aspect, we partner with the very best equipment,

chemical and materials manufacturers in the industry so that the product offerings in the store are not only superior, better-quality products, but products with the backing our clients can rely on.”

That mindset has driven Monarch to offer a high level of service and emulate a “family-oriented” mindset with their customers. The couple said that even if a customer comes through their doors for the first time, they still strive to make that person feel like family.

In addition to treating their customers with care, the Garavalias said they also treat their employees with the same care. This not only means keeping them up to date with the latest technology and products in the pool industry but also with continuing education.

The pair said that their greatest successes have been connecting with neighbors in the community and realizing their dream of business ownership. The Garavalias said they’ve achieved this while constantly pursuing their goal of helping others.

It’s these goals that Monarch wishes to continue, operating under their motto: “Improve your view by looking up to quality.”
