a note from the director: The story of Hadestown is based on the myths of Hades, Persephone, Eurydice and Orpheus, some of the most famous in Greek Mythology. We have reimagined this story, setting it in Appalachia against the backdrop of poverty during the Great Depression. Appalachian storytelling is a foundational oral tradition that carries through generations. Stories get told over and over again, on front porches, around campfires, at kitchen tables - and yet we continue to tell them. In Greek Mythology, Hades took Persephone, Goddess of Spring, to the underworld, resulting in her mother, Demeter, the Goddess of the Harvest, to starve the Earth. A compromise was reached between the two gods and Persephone was allowed to return to Earth for half the year, allowing the harvest to continue - resulting in the changing of the seasons each year. The myth of Eurydice and Orpheus is filled with belief and self-doubt, desperation and hope, betrayal and forgiveness. But most of all, Hadestown is a story of these lovers losing each other, and the struggle to find their way back.
