6.TESTMETHOD

TestsT.1toT.5shallbeconductedinsequenceonthesamecellorbattery.TestsT.6andT.8 shallbeconductedusingnototherwisetestedcellsorbatteries.TestT.7maybeconductedusing undamagedbatteriespreviouslyusedintestsT.1toT.5forpurposesoftestingoncycledbatteries. Inordertoquantifythemassloss,thefollowingprocedureisprovided: Massloss(%)=(M1-M2)/M1×100 WhereM1isthemassbeforethetestandM2isthemassafterthe test.Whenmasslossdoesnot exceedthevaluesinTableblow,itshallbeconsideredas“no massloss”.

T.1Altitudesimulation

Testcellsandbatteriesshallbestoredatapressureof11.6 kPaorlessforatleastsixhoursatambient temperature(20±5°C).

Cellsandbatteriesmeetthisrequirementifthereisnoleakage,noventing,nodisassembly,norupture andnofireandiftheopencircuitvoltageofeachtestcellor batteryaftertestingisnotlessthan90%of itsvoltageimmediatelypriortothisprocedure.Therequirementrelatingtovoltageisnotapplicableto testcellsandbatteriesatfullydischargedstates.

T.2Thermaltest

Testcellsandbatteriesaretobestoredforatleastsixhoursatatesttemperatureequalto72±2°C, followedbystorageforatleastsixhoursatatesttemperatureequalto-40±2°C.Themaximumtime intervalbetweentesttemperatureextremesis30minutes.Thisprocedureistoberepeateduntil10 totalcyclesarecomplete,afterwhichalltestcellsandbatteriesaretobestoredfor24hoursatambie nttemperature(20±5°C).Forlargecellsandbatteriesthedurationofexposuretothetesttemperature extremesshouldbeatleast12hours.

Cellsandbatteriesmeetthisrequirementifthereisnoleakage,noventing,nodisassembly,norupture andnofireandiftheopencircuitvoltageofeachtestcellor batteryaftertestingisnotlessthan90%of itsvoltageimmediatelypriortothisprocedure.Therequirementrelatingtovoltageisnotapplicableto testcellsandbatteriesatfullydischargedstates.

T.3Vibration

Cellsandbatteriesarefirmlysecuredtotheplatformofthe vibrationmachinewithoutdistortingthecells insuchamannerastofaithfullytransmitthevibration.The vibrationshallbeasinusoidalwaveformwith alogarithmicsweepbetween7Hzand200Hzandbackto7Hztraversedin15minutes.Thiscycle shallberepeated12timesforatotalof3hoursforeachofthreemutuallyperpendicularmounting positionsofthecell.Oneofthedirectionsofvibrationmustbeperpendiculartotheterminalface. Thelogarithmicfrequencysweepshalldifferforcellsandbatterieswithagrossmassofnotmorethan 12kg(cellsandsmallbatteries),andforbatterieswithagrossmassofmorethan12kg(large batteries).

Forcellsandsmallbatteries:from7Hzapeakaccelerationof1gnismaintaineduntil18Hzisreached. Theamplitudeisthenmaintainedat0.8mm(1.6mmtotalexcursion)andthefrequencyincreaseduntil apeakaccelerationof8gnoccurs(approximately50Hz).Apeakaccelerationof8gnisthen maintaineduntilthefrequencyisincreasedto200Hz.

Forlargebatteries:from7Hztoapeakaccelerationof1gnis maintaineduntil18Hzisreached.The amplitudeisthenmaintainedat0.8mm(1.6mmtotalexcursion)andthefrequencyincreaseduntila

peakaccelerationof2gnoccurs(approximately25Hz).Apeakaccelerationof2gnisthenmaintained untilthefrequencyisincreasedto200Hz.

Cellsandbatteriesmeetthisrequirementifthereisnoleakage,noventing,nodisassembly,norupture andnofireduringthetestandafterthetestandiftheopencircuitvoltageofeachtestcellorbattery directlyaftertestinginitsthirdperpendicularmounting positionisnotlessthan90%ofitsvoltage immediatelypriortothisprocedure.Therequirementrelatingtovoltageisnotapplicabletotestcells andbatteriesatfullydischargedstates.

T.4Shock

Testcellsandbatteriesshallbesecuredtothetestingmachinebymeansofarigidmountwhichwill supportallmountingsurfacesofeachtestbattery.

Eachcellshallbesubjectedtoahalf-sineshockofpeakaccelerationof150gnandpulsedurationof6 milliseconds.Alternatively,largecellsmaybesubjected toahalf-sineshockofpeakaccelerationof50 gnandpulsedurationof11milliseconds.

Eachbatteryshallbesubjectedtoahalf-sineshockofpeakaccelerationdependingonthemassofthe battery.Thepulsedurationshallbe6millisecondsforsmallbatteriesand11millisecondsforlarge batteries.Theformulasbelowareprovidedtocalculatethe appropriateminimumpeakaccelerations.

Cellsandbatteriesmeetthisrequirementifthereisnoleakage,noventing,nodisassembly,norupture andnofireandiftheopencircuitvoltageofeachtestcellor batteryaftertestingisnotlessthan90%of itsvoltageimmediatelypriortothisprocedure.Therequirementrelatingtovoltageisnotapplicableto testcellsandbatteriesatfullydischargedstates.

T.5Externalshortcircuit

Thecellorbatterytobetestedshallbeshallbeheatedforaperiodoftimenecessarytoreach ahomogeneousstabilizedtemperatureof57±4C,measuredontheexternalcase.Thisperiodoftime dependsonthesizeanddesignofthecellorbatteryandshouldbeassessedanddocumented.Ifthis assessmentisnotfeasible,theexposuretimeshallbeatleast6hoursforsmallcellsandsmall batteries,and12hoursforlargecellsandlargebatteries. Thenthecellorbatteryat57±4Cshallbe subjectedtooneshortcircuitconditionwithatotalexternalresistanceoflessthan0.1ohm. Thisshortcircuitconditioniscontinuedforatleastonehourafterthecellorbatteryexternalcase temperaturehasreturnedto57±4C,orinthecaseofthelargebatteries,hasdecreasedbyhalf ofthe maximumtemperatureincreaseobservedduringthetestandremainsbelowthatvalue.

Theshortcircuitandcoolingdownphasesshallbeconducted atleastatambienttemperature. Cellsandbatteriesmeetthisrequirementiftheirexternal temperaturedoesnotexceed170°Cand thereisnodisassembly,noruptureandnofireduringthetestandwithinsixhoursafterthetest.

T.6Impact/Crush

Impact(applicabletocylindricalcellsgreaterthan18mmindiameter)

Thesamplecellorcomponentcellistobeplacedonaflatsmoothsurface.A15.8mm±0.1mm diameter,atleast6cmlong,orthelongestdimensionofthecell,whicheverisgreater,Type316 stainlesssteelbaristobeplacedacrossthecentreofthesample.A9.1kg±0.1kgmassistobe droppedfromaheightof61±2.5cmattheintersectionofthebarandsampleinacontrolledmanner usinganearfrictionless,verticalslidingtrackorchannelwithminimaldragonthefallingmass.The verticaltrackorchannelusedtoguidethefallingmassshallbeoriented90degreesfromthehorizontal supportingsurface.

Thetestsampleistobeimpactedwithitslongitudinalaxisparalleltotheflatsurfaceandperpendicular tothelongitudinalaxisofthe15.8mm±0.1mmdiametercurvedsurfacelyingacrossthecentreofthe testsample.Eachsampleistobesubjectedtoonlyasingleimpact.

Crush(applicabletoprismatic,pouch,coin/buttoncellsandcylindricalcellsnotmorethan18mmin diameter)

Acellorcomponentcellistobecrushedbetweentwoflatsurfaces.Thecrushingistobegradualwitha speedofapproximately1.5cm/satthefirstpointofcontact.Thecrushingistobecontinueduntilthe firstofthethreeoptionsbelowisreached.

(a)Theappliedforcereaches13kN±0.78kN;

(b)Thevoltageofthecelldropsbyatleast100mV;or

(c)Thecellisdeformedby50%ormoreofitsoriginalthickness.

Oncethemaximumpressurehasbeenobtained,thevoltagedropsby100mVormore,orthecellis deformedbyatleast50%ofitsoriginalthickness,thepressureshallbereleased.

Aprismaticorpouchcellshallbecrushedbyapplyingtheforcetothewidestside.Abutton/coincell shallbecrushedbyapplyingtheforceonitsflatsurfaces.Forcylindricalcells,thecrushforceshallbe appliedperpendiculartothelongitudinalaxis.

Eachtestcellorcomponentcellistobesubjectedtoonecrushonly.Thetestsampleshallbeobserved forafurther6h.Thetestshallbeconductedusingtestcells orcomponentcellsthathavenot previouslybeensubjectedtoothertests.

Cellsandcomponentcellsmeetthisrequirementiftheirexternaltemperaturedoesnotexceed170°C andthereisnodisassemblyandnofireduringthetestandwithinsixhoursafterthistest.

T.7Overcharge

Thechargecurrentshallbetwicethemanufacturer’srecommendedmaximumcontinuouscharge current.Theminimumvoltageofthetestshallbeasfollows:

(a)Whenthemanufacturer’srecommendedchargevoltageisnotmorethan18V,theminimumvoltage ofthetestshallbethelesseroftwotimesthemaximumcharge voltageofthebatteryor22V.

(b)Whenthemanufacturer’srecommendedchargevoltageismorethan18V,theminimumvoltageof thetestshallbe1.2timesthemaximumchargevoltage.

Testsaretobeconductedatambienttemperature;thedurationofthetestshallbe24hours.

Rechargeablebatteriesmeetthisrequirementifthereisno disassemblyandnofireduringthetestand withinsevendaysafterthetest.

T.8Forceddischarge

Eachcellshallbeforceddischargedatambienttemperature byconnectingitinserieswitha12VD.C. powersupplyataninitialcurrentequaltothemaximumdischargecurrentspecifiedbythemanufacturer. Thespecifieddischargecurrentistobeobtainedbyconnectingaresistiveloadoftheappropriatesize andratinginserieswiththetestcell.Eachcellshallbeforceddischargedforatimeinterval(inhours) equaltoitsratedcapacitydividedbytheinitialtestcurrent(inampere).

Primaryorrechargeablecellsmeetthisrequirementifthereisnodisassemblyandnofireduringthe testandwithinsevendaysafterthetest.
