Light+Building2026

WhatdefinesLight+Building2026mostclearlyisashiftinperspective: lightingisnolongerbeingpositionedasaproductcategory,butasan integrallayerofdigitalinfrastructure.Acrosstheinnovationspresented, theindustryappearstohavemoveddecisivelytowardsystem thinking—whereluminaires,sensors,controls,anddataplatformsform interconnectedenvironmentsratherthanisolatedsolutions.

Oneofthemoststrikingdevelopmentsistheelevationoflightingintoa centralnodewithinbuildingintelligence.Lightisincreasinglyexpectedto sense,process,andcommunicate—capturingdataonoccupancy,energy use,andenvironmentalconditions,andfeedingthisintowiderbuilding ecosystems.Thisrepositioningtransformslightingfromapassiveservice intoanactive,decision-enablingnetwork.

Equallysignificantisthematurityofadaptivelighting.Thelatestsystems arenolongerdefinedbypre-programmedscenarios,butbytheirabilityto responddynamicallytocontext—whetherhumanactivity,spatialuse,or externalconditions.Flexibility,bothphysicalanddigital,isbecominga corerequirementratherthanadifferentiator.

Sustainability,too,hasevolvedinscopeanddepth.Thefocusnow extendswellbeyondenergyefficiencytowardfulllifecycleresponsibility: circulardesign,low-carbonmaterials,modularity,andtransparent environmentaldataarebecomingembeddedindevelopmentstrategies.

Atthesametime,theindustryisnotlosingsightoflight’sexperientialrole. Themostrelevantinnovationscombinetechnologicalintelligencewith visualcomfort,atmosphere,andemotionalresonance.Thisconvergence ofperformanceandperceptionsuggestsamoreholisticunderstandingof value.

Ultimately,Light+Building2026signalsanindustrythatisredefining itself—towardconnectivity,adaptability,andresponsibility—whileplacing humanexperiencefirmlyatthecenterofinnovation.

FromLight+Building2026toGLGAsia: AWake-UpCallfortheIndustry

Light+Building2026onceagaindemonstratedthecreativity,technicalcapability, andcommercialenergyofthelighting industry.Wesawsmartercontrols,broader spectralpossibilities,moreadaptivesystems,andstrongernarrativesaroundwellbeing.Allofthismatters.Yetafterwalking thehallsandspeakingwithpartnersacross theecosystem,onequestionremained:are wetrulygettingclosertogoodlight,orare westilltoooftenrefiningthetoolswhile losingsightofthepurpose?

Foryears,ourindustryhasbeenhighly effectiveatimprovingproducts.We knowhowtomakelightingmoreefficient, moreconnected,moredynamic,andmore intelligent.Butinrealindoorenvironments, manypeoplestillspendtheirdaysunder lightingthatmaysatisfyvisualtaskswhile doingtoolittletosupportalertness,biologicalrhythm,sleepquality,mood,andoverall well-being.Theproblemisnolongeralack oftechnology.Itisalackofalignment. Whatisstillmissingisastrongerbridge betweenscience,standards,design,manufacturing,controls,andfieldverification. Withoutthatbridge,“healthylighting”risks remainingaslogan,amarketinglayer,or afragmentedtechnicaldiscussion.What themarketneedsnowisnotmorenoise aroundthetopic,butmoresharedlanguage,moremeasurableframeworks,and morepracticalpathwaysfromclaimto performance. ThisiswhyGoodLight GroupAsiawasestablished.

GLGAsiawasnotcreatedsimplyasa regionalextension.Itwascreatedbecause Asianowsitsatthecenteroftheglobal lightingequation.Asiaishometoalarge shareoftheworld’slightingmanufacturing, afast-evolvingdesigncommunity,major researchcapabilities,andsomeofthemost importantimplementationmarkets.Ifthe futureofgoodlightistobecomescalable, measurable,andcommerciallyreal,Asia cannotremainonlyaproductionbase.It mustalsobecomeaplacewherescience, standards,industry,andapplicationare broughtintocloseralignment.

ThemissionofGLGAsiaiscloselyaligned withthatoftheGoodLightGroup:to acceleratetheadoptionoflightingthat bettersupportshumanhealthandwellbeing.ButinAsia,thatmissionalsohas averypracticaldimension.Weneedto connectstakeholderswhotoooftenwork

This,tome,wasoneofthedeeper messagesofLight+Building2026.The industryisreadyforthenextconversation.Notonlyhowtomakelighting moreadvanced,buthowtomakeitmore meaningful.Notonlywhataproduct canemit,butwhatalightingenvironment actuallydoesforpeopleacrossspace, time,activity,andbiologicalneed.Not onlywhatcanbeclaimedintheory,but whatcanbemeasured,implemented,and improvedinpractice.

Ifweareseriousabouthuman-centric lighting,healthybuildings,andbetterlivingenvironments,thengoodlightmust becomemorethananinspiringconcept. Itmustbecomeasharedresponsibility acrossthevaluechain.

FirstInitiative:ThreeRegions,One Company

Asof1February2026,Casambiimplemented aneworganizationalstructureacrossthree regions:EMEA,APAC,andNorthAmerica. Eachregionnowoperateswithdefined leadership,clearaccountability,and ownership.

“Globalambitionwithoutregionalownership createsnoise.Regionalownershipwithglobal cohesioncreatesmomentum,”Jenkins explains.Markets,regulations,andcustomer expectationsvarysignificantly.Attemptingto manageallofthiscentrallywouldoverlook criticallocalnuances.“Ifyoustandardize everythingfromheadquarters,youmissthe regionalvariancethatenablessuccess,” Jenkinsadds.“Strongdecision-making providesaframeworkbutallowsregionsto navigatetheirowncomplexity.That’swhere wegainthemost.”Thisbalancebetween centralstructureandlocalflexibilityisessential tobuildingsustainableglobalgrowth.

TheTheoryofEmotionalDesign

SergeySizy,LightingDesigner(IALD)–LiDSLightingDesignStudio

HowItAllBegan

Thetheoryofemotionaldesignwas developedbySergeySizyinorderto providesolutionstothechallenges arisingfromcontemporaryhuman needsfortheconsciousapplication oftheemotionalimpactoflight. This subjectissoextensiveandmultifacetedthatitdeservesmorethana singlediscussion.Inthisarticle, heintendstoinitiatesuchadiscourseand tocontributetothestudyandapplicationofprinciplesformanaginghuman moodandemotionsthroughlighting.

Theexperimentthatlaidthefoundationforthe TheoryofEmotionalDesign.

In2012,duringhiscoursesfordesigners, togetherwithtwogroupsoffortystudents each,SergeySizyconductedanexperimentthatconfirmedhishypothesisthat ouremotionalperceptiondoesnotdepend onthesemanticcontentofwhatwesee, butisformedbyasetofabstractcharacteristicsofspatialcomposition.Moreover, colorandlightarethedeterminingfactors ofsuchinfluence.Consideringthatlightingcanbeeasilyandrapidlymodified,it becomesakeyinstrumentofemotional impactthatcanbecontrolledthroughindividualparametersoftheluminousenvironment.Thismeansthatbycreatinglighting scenarios,thelightingdesignerplaysupon thestringsofouremotions.Thishighlyresponsibleroleofaconductorrequiresa scientificallygroundedapproach.Itwas preciselysuchamethodthatSergeydevelopedoverthefollowingyears—firstin theoryandsubsequentlyvalidatedinpracticethroughhisstudioprojectsandthe worksofhisstudents.

ThisconceptwasarticulatedintheManifestoofEmotionalDesign,publishedat theendof2014.Init,Sergeydescribed astep-by-stepalgorithmfortheworkofa lightingdesignerfromtheperspectiveof shapingacontrolledemotionalimpacton users.

Analysis

Anyactionrequirespreliminaryanalysis. Often,weperformitwithoutconsciously reflectingonit—automatically,intuitively. Analysisprovidesuswiththeminimum setofinformationnecessarytomakethe correctdecision.Indesign,thisstageprecedesthedevelopmentofanyconcept.If theanalysisisconductedproperly,conscientiously,andwithsufficientdepth,the designerisgenerallyleftwithasingleviable solution.

Firstandforemost,indesigntasksweconsiderlightinginthecontextofitsimpact onthehumanbeing.Therefore,thefirst subjectofanalysisisthefutureusersofthe spacebeingcreated.Secondly,lighting hasnomeaninginitselfandmustalways beconsideredwithinthecontextofthe

surroundingmaterialenvironment;thus, theobjectstobeilluminatedandtheirspatiallocationmustbeanalyzed.Thirdly, theneedsofuserschangeovertime,and thereforetemporalfactorsmustalsobe takenintoaccount.

Theoutcomeoftheanalysisistheanswer tothequestion:whyarewecreatingthis lighting?Withintheframeworkofemotional design,itisnecessarytodefinethedesired perceptionofthesurroundingspaceand themoodweintendtocreateforusersin eachspecificlightingscenario.

Concept

Theideaunderlyingemotionaldesignfollowsdirectlyfromitsverypurpose.Inorder tocreateaspacethatwillevokepredeterminedemotions,itisnecessarytoidentify somethingthatalreadygeneratessimilar associationsandproducesacomparable moodinfutureusers.Itisessentialtounderstandthatwearespeakingspecifically abouttheusers’perceptions—notthoseof thedesignerortheclient.Theclientdoes notalwaysrepresenttheopinionofthemajorityofusers,andthedesignermaynever findthemselvesontheothersideoftheir ownwork.Manydesignersoftenforgetthis simpleprinciple,creatingaspacebased ontheirownsensations,whichmayhave nothingincommonwiththoseoffuture users—thuscontradictingtheveryideaof design.

Anemotionalimageisthemissinglinkthat makestheresultsoftheworkresonantfirst andforemostwithfutureusers,andonly secondarilywiththedesigner.

SelectionoftheImage

Thisstagefollowstheanalysisandmarks thebeginningofconceptdevelopment. Havingunderstoodwhatiscapableofelicitingtherequiredemotionsinusers, itis necessarytoidentifyimagesthatwillserve asanappropriatetrigger.Mostoften, such animageprovestobevisual, sincethe overwhelmingmajorityofinformationabout thesurroundingworldisobtainedthrough sight.

www.lidstudio.org | info@lidstudio.org

Thematerialityofvisualimagesgivesthem asignificantadvantage(forexample,in comparisonwithmusic)inthedevelopment ofaconcept—namely,thepossibilityof continuousvisualcomparisonbetweenthe luminousenvironmentandthe“original” thatevokesthedesiredemotions.

Anotherquestionis:Fromwhichdomain shouldthisimagebeselected?Themost successfulchoicestendtobenaturalassociations,whicharenotonlyclosetohuman natureitselfbutalsomostoftenevokesimilaremotionsindifferentusers,sinceour experienceofnatureisinnateandevolutionarilyconditioned.Inthiscase,the designermayselectanimageattheirown discretionandbeconfidentthatitwillelicit comparablesensationsinanyuser.

Ifimagesaredrawnfromculture,theyrely notoninnatebutonacquiredexperience, andtheprobabilityofcoincidingperceptionsissignificantlylower—althoughstill relativelyhigh,becausecultureunitesusers withinasharedsocialgroup.However, ifthedesigneroperatesexclusivelywith personalassociations,thelikelihoodofan accurate“resonance”approacheszero.

Ultimately,theimagemustbeassimpleas possible,clearlyarticulated,andunambiguousforallusers.

DecompositionoftheImage

Inordertotranslatethedesiredmoodinto aproject,itisessentialforthelightingdesignertoestablishaconnectionbetween theintendedoutcome—namely,therequiredemotionalresponseofusers—and themeansofachievingit:theappropriate characteristicsoftheluminousenvironment.Therefore,theselectionoftheassociativeimageryisfollowedbyitsanalysis andsubsequentformalization.

Exampleofimagesimplificationforsubsequent decomposition.

Thepurposeofdecompositionistoidentify theperceptualstimulithatshapeourreadingoftheimageinaparticularwayrather thananother.Thisstagedescribesboth thegeneralvectorsofinfluence—suchas theprevailingcolorpalette,formsandge-

ometry,andtherelationshipbetweendominantandbackground—andthespecific parametersoftheluminousenvironment presentinallselectedimageswithinthe associativeseries.

Therearequiteanumberofsuchcharacteristics;however,theprincipallighting parametersincludethefollowing:quantitativeindicators(illuminanceandluminance); qualitativeindicators(correlatedcolortemperatureandcolorrenderingindex,orthe colorofradiation);thedirectionofluminous fluxandthecharacteroflightdistribution; uniformityofilluminationanditslocalization; thedurationofthelightingeffectandthe frequencyofitsdynamics,whereapplicable.

Mostoftheseparameterscanbedirectly transferredintothelightingconceptofthe futureproject;theotherswillundergocertainmodificationsormayberejectedaltogetheronthebasisofconclusionsdrawn fromthepre-designanalysis.

Whenincorporatingparametersintothe concept,itisnecessarytoassignthema hierarchyofimportance.Forexample,in onecasequalitativelightingcharacteristics mayprovetobekey,whilequantitative indicatorsrecedeintothebackground.In anotherconcept,theamountoflightand itsuniformitymaybecometheprimary factors.Eachprojectisauniquecase, requiringtheauthor’sattentivenessandan individualapproach.

Exampleofanemotionalimage.

Suchahierarchyisnecessaryinorderto ensurethat,duringimplementation,itis clearwhichaspectsrequireprimaryattention,andwhichmaybecompromisedifa choicemustbemadebetweenconflicting lightingparameters.

Thelightingcharacteristicsultimatelydefinedinthiswayformlightingscenes(not tobeconfusedwithlightingscenarios)for individualvisualspaces.Takingthetemporalfactorintoaccount,eachlighting scene—dependingontheobjectivesestablishedearlier—acquirestwoormore lightingscenarios.

MeansofConcept Implementation

Theselectionoflightingtypesisanother intermediatestageonthepathfromidea torealization.Appropriatelightingmethodsandtechniquesaredeterminedbased ontheobjectiveofcreatingaluminous environmentwithcharacteristicsdefined throughthedecompositionofassociative imagery.

Havingestablishedwhattheluminousenvironmentshouldbelikeandhowitwill evolveovertime,itisnecessarytochoose themeansofimplementation:lightingfixturesandlightsources,materialsthatreflect,diffuse,orrefractlight,aswellasthe lightingcontrolsystem.Itisimportantto rememberthat,inadditiontotheluminousenvironment,thespatialenvironment alsoparticipatesintherealizationofthe concept.Therefore,atthisstageitispermissibletointroducesomeadjustments toit—modifyingobjects,materials,orfinishingcolors—sothattheresultmostfully correspondstothegoalsandideasofthe concept.Successdependsonthedialoguebetweenthelightingdesignerand theprofessionalsshapingthespace:architects,landscapeandinteriordesigners,or decorators.

Afterselectingthelightingtypesandthe meansfortheirimplementation,itmay becomeevidentthattherearetoomany typesoflightingequipment.Thisnotonly increasesthebudget,butalsoreduces versatilityandreliabilitywhileaddingcomplexitytothelightinginstallation.Toavoid this,optimizationisemployed,basedon theunderstandingthatthesameimpact oreffectcanbeachievedthroughdifferentmeans.Accordingly,itisacceptable touseasingletypeoflightingorasingle pieceofequipmentformultipleconceptual objectives—acrossdifferentlightingscenes andscenarios.

Significanceofthe Methodology

Thetheoryofemotionaldesignmakesit possibletoconstructanenvironmental conceptthatnotonlyfulfillstherequired functions, butalsotakesintoaccountthe perceptualcharacteristicsofitsusers, the emotionsthatresonatewiththem, and createsacontextuallyappropriatemood— onethatcanbereadilymodifiedthrough thedynamiccapabilitiesoflighting.

Regardlessofthetypeoflightinginquestion— naturalorartificial,outdoororinterior,residentialoroffice—whereverahumanbeing ispresent,lightisessential,anditmust beselectedwithconsiderationforourvisualandemotionalperception,aswellas theneeds,characteristics,andaspirationsofusers.Thisiswhytheideasand approachesofemotionaldesigncanbe appliedacrossawiderangeoffields,includingdesign,architecture,andurban planning,extendingbeyondthescopeof interiorlightingalone. ■

IlluminanceMeasurementsin SportsLighting–PartII, FieldAssessmentandRobotics

Inapreviousarticlewereviewedthe illuminancemeter(luxmeter)andits limitationsinsportslightingilluminanceassessment.Thatarticlewas morerelatedtothetechnicalitiesand fundamentalsoftheinstrument.

Inthispiece,wewillreviewtheapplicationsoftheluxmeterinthefield,in sportslighting,andhowtheaccomplishmentofdifferentmeasurements (horizontal,vertical,camera)hasdifferentapproaches–onedoesnotfit all.

Evenifilluminanceisthemeasurand ofchoice,wehavetokeepinmindits limitations,aseyesandcamerasperceiveluminance,thatismorecomplex tomeasureandevaluate.

IlluminanceinSports

Lighting–Horizontal(Eh) andVertical(Ev)

Wehavetwo(2)mainilluminancestoassessinsportslighting,particularlyforfootball/soccer:

• Horizontal(Eh)

• Vertical(Ev)

Inthecaseof vertical measurementof illuminance(Ev),wehavetodistinguish betweentwomainapproaches:

• OrthogonalPlanes relatedtotheplay area(PA): Ev_00, Ev_90, Ev_180, Ev_270

• CameraPlanes (measurementplanes normaltothecameras)

Aboutthe heights,followinginternational standards,suchasEN12193(Europe)and AS2560(Australia), Eh istakenatground leveland Ev at1.5m (sameasforglare calculations)withsomeexceptions.

Thereasonforthesecriteriamakessense. Inthecaseof Eh,thisistheilluminance thatreachestheplayground,thesurface thatthecamerasaregoingtocapture,and theballandbootsinthecaseofsports suchasfootball/soccer.For Ev,itisthe averageheightoftheuppersideofthe bodyandarmsoftheplayers.Thinkabout thedifferencesbetweensportssuchas football/soccerandbasketball.

Thereare privatestandardsthatdo bothmeasurements(Eh and Ev)atthe sameheight,basedonreasonsof practicality.Ratherthandoingonepassat groundlevelandanotherpassat1.5m,it ismucheasier,andcheaper,todoasingle passat1m.Thepracticalityjustificationis that Eh atgroundleveland Eh at1mdo notdiffer“significantly”,assumptionthat isfundamentallywrong,gettingrealdifferencesinthesidelines(Ehg< Eh1m)and inthemiddleofthefield(Ehg> Eh1m).

Asa“curiosity”,evenifthisisadisregarded detailinsportslighting,wealsohaveto considerthatsimulations (“ModelledPerformance”)arecalculatedassuming thatthepitchesareflat.Thiscanbe thesituationforindoorspaces,butdefinitelynotforoutdoorpitches.Depending ontheweather/rainanddrainagesystems, outdoorpitchescanhaveslopesthatwill affectthelighting,withheightdifferences betweenthecenterandthesidesofthe pitch(“crowning”).Nevertheless,thisis outofthescopeofthisarticle.

Let’sgodeeperoneachoftheilluminances (Eh and Ev)beforeenteringintoautomation/roboticsdetails.

HorizontalIlluminanceat GroundLevel(Ehg)

Horizontalilluminancemeasurementisthe historicalfoundationofsportslighting.

The mainaimof Eh istoassessthe uniformitylevelsthatreachtheplaying surface (ground).Factorssuchasthe reflectance ofthegroundmaterialplaya criticalrole,andwecanendupseeingdark spotsinplacesofmaximumillumination, asthe“brightness”thatweperceiveisnot illuminancebutluminance(reflectedlight). Nevertheless,luminancemeasurementhas itsowncomplexities,andEhassessment hasbeeninplaceforyears,actingasan acceptable“proxy”.

Themeasurementofhorizontalilluminance (Eh)atgroundlevel(Ehg),isoneofthe morehatedonesbyoperators.Thereasonsareeasyandunderstandable:

• First,itisabout ergonomics:youneed toleanforwardtoputtheinstrument ontheground.Atonepointnothing toworryabout,butwhenyouhaveto doitaround100times,atnight,ina humidenvironment,yourbackwillstart toresentit.

• Second,proper leveling oftheinstrument.Itisveryeasyinindoorsurfaces, suchasbasketballcourts,andabit trickywhenyougointograsssurfaces, andevenmoreonnaturalgrass.The orientationsofthegrassfiberscantake theinstrumentoutoflevel,andsolutions suchasaplatesareneededtoensure properlevelingofthemeter.

• Third, distancing fromthemeasurement.Inordertoavoid interfering with thereading, youneedtomoveaway fromtheinstrument.

The effectof f2 (cosinefactor) thatwe discussedinthepreviousarticlehasminor impactin Eh onthesidelines(withanear perpendicularangleofattackfromthefixtures)vsonthemiddleofthepitchwhere theanglescanbecomesubstantial,particularlywithlowerheightsofthefixtures structures(poles),enteringthecosinelaw into(negative)effect.

VerticalIlluminance–OrthogonalPlanes(0º,90º, 180º,270º)

Orthogonalplanesarerelativelyeasyto handle,particularlyonrectangularpitches. Themainreference0ºisusuallyoneof thelongsidelines(‘01’-‘12’inthecaseof FIFA/UEFA).Fromthereyougettheother onesrotatingclockwiseninetydegreesto get90º,180º,and270º.Thereare three basicapproaches forthismission:

1. Ifyouhaveonly onemeter,youwill needtodofour(three+1)rotations (0º,90º,180º,270º),thismeansfour uncertaintiesrelatedtoorientation,and onlyonetotheinstrument.

2. Having twometers makeslifeeasier.Startingwithonemeterat0ºand anotheroneat180ºonasupporting structure,asinglerotation(actuallytwo asyouhavetogobackto0º)saves timeandreducesorientationuncertainties,yetincreasesuncertaintieswiththe meters,aswenowhavetwoinaction.

3. Fourmeters tocatchtheilluminance inthefourorthogonalplanesatonce isthesimplestoneintermsofoperationasnorotationisneeded.Here,the positionofthefourmetersinthesupportingheadiscritical,andonceyou haveit,nothingneedstobemodified. Theonlychallengeistolevelandaim properlyateachpoint,thatwasalso inthepreviousones.Themaindisadvantageisthefouruncertaintiesofthe fourmeters,thatneedtobeconsidered individually.Andthisalsomeansfour calibrationsratherthanone.
