To mark Pjotr Müller’s 70th birthday, the Kröller-Müller Museum will exhibit drawings from the book from 16 September 2017 until 14 January 2018. scenario and drawings Pjotr Müller text Tonio van Vugt After around 50-years of artistry, Pjotr Müller (1947) looks back on his career in the form of a self-drawn autobiography in comic book form. The illustrated story was originally very personal, intended for his dyslectic son Mo. Müller began by making a series of coloured prints of his artworks, for which he created fictional surroundings using a black pen. A complete life story gradually evolved, in which he describes his life as an artist, his motives for becoming a sculptor, his relationship with his family and professional entourage, his inspiration and of course his oeuvre to date.

Tonio van Vugt works as an illustrator, comic book illustrator and car toonist for adver tising agencies, government institutions and magazines. He is also active as a curator, text writer and reviewer. He has been the ar tistic director of the international festival Stripdagen Haarlem since 2014.

The medium chosen by Pjotr Müller, the comic book, is unique for a sculptor to interpret his work. The pieces are given context, a situation that is not possible in reality. As an accessible medium, the comic is an ideal introduction to the complex world of the artist and provides an interpretation of his work for younger generations.

Presentation at Unseen 2017 In collaboration with Galerie Bart, Amsterdam/ Nijmegen This book has been made possible thanks to a contribution from the Mondriaan Fonds fotografie Kuno Grommers, Inga Powileit tekst Merel Bem Kuno Grommers (1946) plays a game with our powers of observation. What is 2D seems to be 3D and vice versa. But the term ‘game’ is actually a word that is alien to his work. His photos have a kind of uncultivated sincerity that does not play around with the data, or use ‘tricks’ to mislead the viewer. The photos have a kind of fresh, yet timeless appearance. Each individual image is autonomous. But presented as a series the shapes start to lead a life of their own and even seem to float, with the surrounding space falling away. And this while the space is not exactly non-descript: The wooden floorboards are covered with paint splashes, the ceiling is anything but neat, with a forgotten hook left behind in one of the beams. Whatever is clear becomes almost hallucinatory through repetition: every time the same setting of three walls, ceiling and paint-spattered floor into which a different shape is set each time. By presenting the photos next to each other, it becomes clear how Grommers is able to endlessly apply the possibilities, without it becoming a sleek, boring trick. The images reinforce each other.

Merel Bem (1977) studied Ar t History in Amsterdam and New York. Since 2000 she has written about photography, visual ar t and clothing for the Volkskrant and various fashion, interior and opinion magazines.

Sixty illusions of perspective that only through the eye of the camera, seen from the same position each time, become iconic artworks. Made over a period of thirteen years. Cecilia Vissers is part of the New Minimalism movement. Although her work is inspired by artists such as Donald Judd, she goes much further than his formal themes. Vissers’ industrial perfection is clearly on an equal footing with that of Judd, but there is something else. The titles of her works alone show a significant difference. Judd and other minimalist artists often refer to their pieces as ‘untitled’. A box is a box. Light is just light. They are not given any meaning. But Vissers gives her pieces names. This simple addition introduces a narrative component to her work. Vissers’ titles include So Close, So Far, Next Tide, Faraway and Silver Ridge; each title describes how she perceives her relationship with a place. Other pieces, such as Belmullet and Duvillaun, specifically describe the fierce costal areas of Ireland often visited by the artist. Vissers presents a sculptural object with a particular title and then invites the viewer to interpret the object: what is so far? what is so close? This removes Vissers’ artworks from the theoretical constructions of minimalism. (text from the foreword by Vilis Inde)

Vilis Inde (1958) is the director of gallery inde/jacobs in Marfa, Texas. Alistair Rider (1976) teaches Ar t History at the University of St. Andrews. He graduated from the University of Leeds and spent two years researching at the University of York. His comprehensive monograph Carl Andre: Things In Their Elements was released in 2011 by Phaidon. Cees de Boer (1955) studied General Literature Science and Philosophy. He graduated in the novels of Max Ernst in 1995. He works as a curator, publicist and advisor. Cees de Boer was (together with Colin Huizing) curator of the presentation of the Dutch pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2015.

The Holy Triangle is a special area in Oosterhout. It takes its name from the three adjoining monumental monastery compounds, surrounded by large monastic gardens and landscapes. This is the location of the 1ste Biennale Art in the Holy Triangle, which links contemporary art with the spiritual and artistic heritage of the Holy Triangle. The theme of the 1st Biennale is ‘love’ and numerous artists – painters, sculptors, photographers, designers – whose work is centred around religion or spirituality, have been asked by curator Guus van den Hout to make a contribution, often in the form of new works. The book, released to mark the Biennale, presents a sample of current art that is driven by religion and spirituality. For this reason, it is interesting not only to visitors of the Biennale but also for anyone interested in current art in that goes deeper.

Guus van den Hout was the director of Museum Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder and Museum Catharijneconvent. He also worked as Visiting Director in the Metropolitan Museum of Ar t in New York and as advisor for religious heritage within the Roman Catholic church. images Jackie Sleper and Roderick Vos text Jackie Sleper foreword Ingmar Heytze The paradise of Isola, near Nice, is the French base and great source of inspiration for visual artist Jackie Sleper. Flora and fauna in all their varieties and the enchanting ambience around Isola feed her imagination, which has been put to use here for a series of collages that are rooted in surrealism. The collages, a harvest of twenty years’ work, at first seem innocent due to their humour, bright colours, beautiful flowers and adorable animals. But look more closely and you will see that they go deeper, sometimes on the surface, sometimes hidden within the scene and only revealed as a sum of all the separate elements. The seeming optimism can then change into abrasive discomfort. Designer Roderick Vos found in Isola his inspiration for the organic Isola scene. This also means that he has a share in the book, just like the poet Ingmar Heytze, who chose a collage to express this is his very own words.

After an education at the Agricultural and Agricultural School, Jackie Sleper studied at the Academy for Visual Ar ts in Utrecht. In combination with extensive travels, these two areas of training shaped her into a versatile ar tist who is keen to seek out collaborations with others. Roderick Vos’ wide fascination in the creative industry always remains the foundation for his contemporary modern designs. According to Joost Zwagerman, the poet Ingmar Heytze is ‘on his own, The Beatles of Dutch poetry’.

We have recognized the muse as a source of inspiration since ancient times. For a long time she was seen mainly as a passive subject that inspired the artist to create his work. In his photos, Rem van den Bosch returns to the original relationship: the artist who urges his muse to tell her own story. In 365 nude portraits he searches for the modern-day muse. Throughout 2015 he photographed a different inspiring woman every day. Strong or vulnerable, lively or shy: Van den Bosch wants to capture the reality of the contemporary muse. It makes no difference whether she is a ballerina in Amsterdam, a designer in Eindhoven or a grandmother in Groningen: he asks her to reveal herself in her own environment, without glamour, so that her true feelings have a chance to shine through.

Rem van den Bosch (1974) graduated from the St. Joost Academie in Breda in 2000. He made por traits of over 1500 people for the project Beroemd in Zeeland (2003-2006). This work led him to travel to LA in 2008 with 400 requests for personal por traits. This resulted in the series Crashed Cars and Movie Stars. After two years in Berlin and six months working as a guest teacher for Ateliers ‘89 in Aruba, he returned to the Netherlands in 2012. The two photo series’ in which he reinterpreted iconic figures The New Miss Zeeland (2013) and The New Michiel de Ruyter (2014) – inspired him to create A Muse a Day.

Dutchbat III returned to the Netherlands on 24 July 1995, and with it also the famous roll of camera film. During the fall of the enclave of Srebrenica in former Yugoslavia, lieutenant J.H.A. Rutten photographed how the Bosnian Muslim population was evacuated by the Bosnian Serbs. These were the first signals of what was later to be recognized as the largest genocide in Europe since the Second World War. When the revealing roll of film returned, it was ‘accidentally’ destroyed during development in a Ministry of Defense dark room. Was it just bad luck, or did it contain images that had to be hidden from the general public? Lost Takes is shaped around two storylines in which the importance of truthfulness plays a central role: On one hand, what happened during the fall of the enclave Srebrenica, on the other hand what subsequently happened to the roll of film. The photos of the first storyline focus primarily on the (guilty) landscape, as silent witness of everything that took place. The second storyline is illustrated with objects from the dark room. The book also includes archive images, documents and newspaper cuttings to tell the story.

Tobias Bijl (1981) is a Rotterdam documentary photographer. After studying a philosophy, he graduated with Lost Takes at the Amsterdam Photo Academy in 2017. Characteristic of his work is an investigative method in which various forms of photography, technique and (existing) material are used to make a story. Returning theme is the transformation of a society and landscape as a result of historical events. In a search for traces, the limits of collective memory are investigated.

Imca Schoots has worked on an extremely personal photographic project for the past four years. She uses the camera to reveal her soul. A book has been compiled, together with designer Eva van der Schans, that has resulted in a powerful selection of images and has a strongly poetic character. Aspects of life such as pain, vulnerability, strength and pleasure are shown through a series of self-studies and serene landscape photos. A beautifully intimate book that will appeal to many.

Imca Schoots (1973) graduated in HBO Photographic Design from the School of Photography in 2014. She has worked as an autonomous photographer ever since and has worked on various longterm photographic projects. Her photographs have been published in New Dutch Photography Talent 2014 by GUP.

The book will be presented during Unseen 2017. In his first literary photo novel, Bas Jongerius reconstructs the story of Alma, a muse born from the Mediterranean Sea. She has a dream: she wants to become ‘a Photographer of the Sea’. In the Mediterranean artists’ town where she lives, she meets a travel photographer from the North who is searching for a story, for his first literary photographic novel. The two photographers become entwined in a love story in which passionate romance clashes with the hard reality of existence. A Photographer of the Sea tells Alma’s story from an unexpected perspective. Half way through, the story takes a turn that almost forces the reader to make a judgment about the way in which the story is being told. In his book Bas Jongerius investigates not only the pitfalls of a romantic spirit. Alma’s tragic story also leaves the reader with a burning question: has the photographer only registered the reality, or is he, as storyteller, also the director of the story?

Bas Jongerius studied English and Spanish Language and Literature at the University of Amsterdam. Besides his love for literature, he also has an ongoing fascination for photography. With a brand new doctorate in literature, he took a long journey through Patagonia. His photo reports of this trip suddenly launched him into the world of media, after which he travelled around the world for twenty years as a travel photographer. With his first photo novel he has now found a form in which literature and photography blend together seamlessly.

A Photographer of the Sea is a book in the Dutch tradition of the photographic novel, as made famous by Ed van der Elsken. The photo book has been disguised as a literary novel by graphic designer Wout de Vringer.

photography Juliane Hermann text Yasha Beresiner, Juliane Herrmann, James Anderson In the photo book Man Among Men, Juliane Herrmann opens the doors to a centuries-old society that normally remains closed to the general public: The Freemasons. The origins of this secret brotherhood date back to the late medieval stone masons. Freemasons can now be found all over the world in various forms, with an estimated membership of around six million people. Over the course of the 21st century, the general perception of Freemasons has thereby changed from a ‘secret society’ to a worldwide ‘society with secrets’. Herrmann has documented Freemasonry in different places all over the world over the past five years and thereby delves deeper than the secrecy and occultism that usually shrouds public perception of this group. Instead, this book shows her aiming her lens on what attracts people to Freemasonry in the contemporary world: the search for identity and belonging to a group. As well as the extensive interiors of various lodges, Herrmann portrays the members of the brotherhood, ritualistic scenes and the daily goings-on of life in a lodge. Through capturing both the enigmatic and normal sides of life, she reveals a complex, humorous and sometimes contradictory portrayal of modern-day Freemasonry.

Juliane Herrmann (1989) is a documentary photographer and filmmaker. She lives and works in Cologne, Germany. She studied from 2008 to 2012 for her Bachelor of Photography in Dortmund, Germany and in 2014 she achieved her Master diploma as Documentary Photographer at AKV|St. Joost in Breda. Herrmann is par ticularly interested in closed communities. Her work has already ben shown in various group exhibitions and has been published internationally.

Herrmann’s book is published in 2017 to mark the 300-year anniversary of contemporary Freemasonry.

This book is a Dutch / German collaboration. photography John Williams redaction Rolf Sachsse This is the first international monograph of the photographs of John Williams (Sydney 1933 – 2016 Hobart) whose work, outside his own country, remains undiscovered. Inspired to take up photography by “The Family of Man” exhibition which went to Sydney in 1959, Williams was, from the outset, a street photographer in the strict sense: he walked the streets at random, waiting for the right moment to press the button of his already prepared camera. Besides amounting a mass of photographs the best of which have been selected here, he established one of the first photography galleries in Australia and was the first Head of Photography at Sydney College of the Arts where he was a legendary teacher of the next generation of Australian photographers. In the late 1980s, aware that his photographs were, themselves, cultural history, he studied the academic version of the subject. His PhD on the influences of the German avantgarde on Australian art in the 1920s was published and a number of other history books followed, along with a first small monograph of his own photographs. This volume, though, is the first to present him to an international audience with the standing he deserves. John Williams is amongst the best of Australian Street photographers.

text Mike Ware photography Grant Frost Grant’s involvement in photography began as a child. He was fascinated with an image that appeared each month in a science magazine depicting an extreme close up of an everyday object. The form the abstraction took, and that it was an everyday object most people did not recognize, rather than what is was, interested him. At boarding school, he found an old enlarger in a cellar in the art building, he dusted it down and got it working. Even at that time, he liked taking abstract images, but was misadvised that the strength of photography was in depicting reality and if he wanted to focus on the abstract, he should look at other media such as painting and drawing. After years concentrating on his university studies, work and raising a family his interest in photography never waned, and within the last couple of years Grant began devoting much of his time to his passion in photography.

Grant Frost is self taught in photography though in recent years he has attended a few courses, including one run by Ralph Gibson and another by Alex Webb. His work caught the eye of Paul Taylor, Director of Renaissance Press resulting in his first exhibition in 2014 at Reynolds Fine Art, New Haven, U.S.A. His prints are crafted using the palladium process, one of photography’s earliest and most archival processes. His first book Nuances shows a selection of 26 images in duotone.

Renze Dijkema photographed the famous Pieterpad during a 500 km walk straight through the Netherlands. His panoramic black and white photos show the Netherlands as an empty and abandoned area, made by man and in which man is present everywhere. The route begins in the far north, in the village of Pieterburen, continues via Groningen, Coevorden, Vorden and Venlo, and ends in Maastricht at the St. Pietersberg. The landscape changes constantly along the way, passing by clay fields and sandy soils, forests and rivers, but also parks and castle ruins.

Renze Dijkema (1966) achieved a Masterâ€™s in Ar t in 1997 and has been dedicated to photography ever since. As a visual ar tist he takes photographs of still lifes that look like empty, desolate landscapes.

This special book contains 72 panorama photos of the Pieterpad. In order to do them justice, the images have been printed over two pages, so that each photo is 60 cm wide and 24 cm high. As such, the landscapes encountered by Renze Dijkema can be best experienced.

50 I’m in puberty too is all about, for women, a turbulent phase of life. This is portrayed in thirty-five portraits of women from diverse backgrounds that are included in the book. Thirty-five photos and thirty-five different stories, with several striking patterns. Four essays – ‘The numbers’, ‘Time’, ‘The brain’, ‘The body’ – provide context. At around the age of fifty, many women take stock of their lives: ‘I thought, fuck, who am I really?’; ‘I was angry. Constantly.’; ‘I had imagined the future very differently.’ They decide to turn their lives around: ‘Well, I left my husband. That’s how it is.’; ‘I’ve been forcibly wrenched out of my system.’ And they rediscover themselves: ‘Apparently I’m not so vulnerable.’; ‘I am discovering my sensuality again.’; ‘I see myself with surprise.’ 50 I’m in puberty too has been made by women around the age of fifty. Their own experiences and their curiosity about others led them to make this book for everyone who is, was or will be fifty.

Bernardine Walrecht works as an advisor in the field of design, presentation and ar t direction and was a senior lecturer at the Design Academy in Eindhoven. Ellen Martens is a por trait photographer and works on behalf of companies, foundations and individuals. She also works as a job coach for young people with a work restriction. Door Fransen is co-owner of Kidscase Home, a lifestyle brand for children. In addition, she gives conceptual and commercial adfvies to creative initiatives and startups.

Gabriel Eisenmeier has photographed Kyteman and his musical family over the past ten years in their journey through the largest Dutch festivals and leading venues, but also during their various tours abroad. Not only did the arrival of Kyteman give a boost to the Dutch hip-hop landscape, the musical innovation in improvisation during the successful jam-sessions mark a special moment in the history of Dutch music.

Gabriel Eisenmeier graduated in photography from the St. Joost Academie in Breda in 2008. Alongside his own longterm projects he also takes commissioned photographs and is involved with the Volkskrant as a photo editor.

Eisenmeier’s document showcases all the important facets of the past decades and allows you to see moments and places that would usually be hidden from the public. It is a selection of the best photos from an enormous archive that Eisenmeier has developed over the years. The surprising design leads the viewer through the biggest and smallest moments in the lives of these musicians, and the accompanying music reinforces the experience.

Artists, politicians, writers, sporting heroes, actors, musicians, pop stars, people who were loved or hated by the general public – he made portraits of everyone who seemed important enough to fill columns of the newspapers and illustrated magazines. C. Barton van Flymen is a photojournalist and sport photographer, but above all a portrait artist. He has travelled the world for newspapers and magazines. He has taken news photos, social documentary series’, followed the Tour de France for years and reported on all kinds of sporting events. His photographic style has evolved over the years; he has sought out new methods and is not afraid to experiment. And yet the signature of Van Flymen is clearly visible in all his images.

Dick Breebaart is co-founder of Hollandse Hoogte and is linked to the Naarden Photo Festival as curator and board member. He has designed and compiled various photo books and now works as a photography advisor for media and businesses.

Frederike Huygen is a Dutch design historian who has written many ar ticles and books on the subject, including Wim Crouwel Modernist and Schrofer Sketches.

This book explores modernism in Dutch graphic design of the 20th Century with an emphasis on the varied aspects and meanings of the term modernism. Its publication coincides with an exhibition at the Special Collections facility of the University of Amsterdam. The book comprises three reflective essays, on the periods 1920–1940/45, 1945–1990 and 1990–present. Modernism: In Print presents a comprehensive picture of the subject, drawn from the collection and the design archives of Special Collections. It interrogates the canon by including some less well-known examples of graphic design work. The concept of modernism dominates the discourse on graphic design. This book aims to recognize its often underestimated complexity.

In the past ten years Dutch designer Bart Hess has presented a variety of projects in which the relationship between man and material, nature and technology plays a central role. The starting point in the work of Bart Hess (Geldrop, 1984) is the human body, which he always dresses in a different way, distorts or decorates in a way that has very little to do with fashion or styling. High-tech materials fuse with the model’s bodies. This is done with such conviction in the video Mutants (2011) that it went viral on YouTube. What looks like a digital animation is actually a filmed performance in a latex suit. Bart Hess always records his designs and performances. This documental material – that is often reminiscent of science-fiction images – forms, in a sense, the true work of Bart Hess. The relationship between man and material, nature and technology plays a central role.

After his studies Ar t and Architecture History at the University of Groningen, Fredric Baas (1976) worked for the Gemeentemuseum The Hague and the Ceramics Museum Princessehof in Leeuwarden. Since 2009, Fredric Baas has worked as a curator at the Stedelijk Museum ‘s-Hertogenbosch.

The designs of Hess seduce, disturb, attract and repel. The tension between the virtual and the tangible is constant, but the physical aspect has recently become more important to Bart Hess. The impact and the interaction with the viewer are thus more direct. Hence his tendency in recent years to more often present theatrical installations instead of photos and videos. Bart Hess. Ze werkt zich nog steeds een slag in de rondte met laag betaalde banen. ’s Morgens vroeg brengt Henny de krant rond, overdag werkt ze als schoonmaker en in de avond is ze gastvrouw in een theater. Als kostwinner voor haar gezin met vijf nog thuiswonende kinderen voelt ze dagelijks de gevolgen van de economische crisis. Haar optimisme wordt op de proef gesteld als ze onwelkom nieuws te horen krijgt.

In Waar nieuw en oud raken maakt Henket ons deelgenoot van zijn opvattingen over de ontwikkelingen van de moderniteit in architectuur. Hij doet dat aan de hand van de geschiedenis en een aantal van zijn projecten. Al jaren bepleit hij dat intensief hergebruik voorwaarde is voor een houdbare toekomst. Hubert-Jan Henket zet zijn opvattingen helder en bevlogen uiteen voor iedereen die geïnteresseerd is in de gebouwde omgeving.
