Art works from various Dutch companies will swap their trusted places in offices and companies this autumn for a place in a museum. From December, Singer Laren offers a historic art overview of 75 years of Dutch art from company collections, with as central theme ‘encounters’ between modern art after 1945 and contemporary art. The book accompanying the exhibition, Out of office. Art Treasures from companies, is the first book in which post-war Dutch art is presented by making connections between old and new. We see the interaction and the dynamic between the art works, the artists, between the canon who turned the art world upside down and the youngest generation that does not work in isolation but is indebted to its predecessors. An example: the theme ‘engagement and expression’ provides interaction between Karel Appel, Tanja Ritterbex, Ger Lataster, Lucebert, Carel Visser, Ronald Zuurmond, Anton Rooskens, Gé-Karel van der Sterren, André Volten, Constant, Wessel Couzijn, Shinkichi Tajiri and David Bade. Just like many other European artists in the 1920’s and 1930’s they worked in a realistic style. Due to the controversial exhibition ‘Tendenzen der zwanziger Jahre’ in Berlin (1977) and ‘Les Réalismes’ in Paris (1980), François in particular, the only one of the four to be included in this exhibition, was positioned for the first time in the middle of international realism of the interbellum, together with Dutch realists like Carel Willink and Pyke Koch.
Corinne Charles is a freelance art historian and guest conservator of the Barraud exhibition. Marieke Jooren is the conservator of Museum MORE. In collaboration with Museum MORE
With the exhibition in Museum MORE and the accompanying book, the brothers are being introduced to a wider audience in the Netherlands for the first time. The exhibition includes a sharp selection of around sixty paintings: imposing figure paintings, silent still-lives and intriguing portraits, often with an enigmatic twist. Central is the work of François Barraud, the most famous of the four, surrounded by the paintings of his brothers Aimé, Aurèle and Charles. The richly illustrated book about the life and work of the Barraud brothers has been written by the Swiss Barraud expert Dr. Corinne Charles. In the introduction MORE conservator Marieke Jooren places the artists within the context of European art during the interbellum, with an emphasis on realism in the Netherlands.

A century of change, 1900-2000
A large exhibition about Balinese art can be seen in the Rijkmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden from 11 October text Wim Bakker final editing Willem Campschreur Visual Arts in Bali is a standard work for a wide audience about Balinese visual art in the 20th century. The book follows the line in the change of patronage under which Balinese artists traditionally worked. The enormous distance in shape, function and aesthetics between traditional Balinese and Western art, that existed around 1900, was significantly reduced under the influence of colonial rule and the arrival of many foreigners. Western artists travelled to Bali and often settled there, which initiated a mutual dynamic in visual art. However, the constantly changing social and political circumstances did not play a very significant role. The book follows all these developments from the beginning of the 20th century, when the Dutch colonial rules were imposed, until the integration of Balinese culture in the wider global tendencies of the 1990’s. Wim Bakker and his partner Marian visited Bali regularly from 1972. Over the years they built-up an extensive network among Balinese artists and art dealers there. They knew many now internationally famous, yet late Balinese artists personally and Wim recorded their stories. This information gives the book, that Wim Bakker has been working on since 2000, tremendous value, just like the many never previously published artworks. A book for everyone who admires the wealth and beauty of the Balinese culture and is interested in its background and the changes this art went through in the 20th century.
Wim Bakker (1939-2017) studied, just like his wife Marian who came to the Netherlands for the first time in the year of Indonesian independence, at the Royal Academy of Visual Ar t in The Hague. He became an ar t teacher and set up, within the framework of the then new Mammoetwet, ar t education for secondary schools. His life-long passion for Balinese ar t resulted in an exhibition in Museum Nusantara in 1985 and the book Bali Verbeeld (Bali in Image), which to this day remains an impor tant source of information on Balinese ar t.

Exhibition Museum Jan van der Togt, Amstelveen, 17 October 2018 to 27 January 2019 The Spanish artist Lita Cabellut has developed a unique technique over the years whereby she paints large-scale portraits and combines traditional frescotechniques with the use of oil paint. Subsequently breaking the layer of paint on these imposing works results in the use of a combination of power and coincidence to create a completely new image. Cabellut thus stimulates us to let go of what we can recognise and control. ‘As if you can break time with your own hands.’ The resulting image is generated from a sense of freedom and has been given a new essence. Lita Cabellut (born in 1961 in Sariñena, Aragon) is a Spanish artist who lives and works in the Netherlands. She grew up on the streets in Barcelona until her adoption at the age of twelve. During this time she became acquainted with the Spanish Masters in the Prado Museum, after which she immediately devoted herself to the world of art. Lita Cabellut had her first exhibition at the age of 17 and moved to the Netherlands when she was 19 years-old, where she studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. Cabellut has developed a unique technique over the years which is characterized by large-scale canvasses that combine traditional fresco techniques with modern applications of oil paint. Lita’s craquelé and defined pallet give her portraits a skin. The central ‘human’ theme and the social messages she communicates in her work play central roles in her paintings. Alongside her defining monumental portraits, Lita Cabellut is also a multidisciplinary artist whose work encompasses video art, visual poetry, scenography, illustrations and sculptures.

The Green Middle Ages is an indispensable source of information that answers numerous questions such as: What were the functions and the meanings of plants, their roots and their fruits in the Middle Ages? A few years back, Masha Trebukova became fascinated by Romanesque art and particularly by the art of sculpture. Travelling along old pilgrimage routes she saw the directness of the folkloristic and innocent expression of these images that had been made by early Christian sculptors. It inspired her to make an entirely new work: monoprints printed on textile. The sources of inspiration were images from churches and monasteries.
Masha Trebukova grew up in Moscow. She graduated in painting and graphics from the Surikov Ar t Academy in 1986. She has lived and worked in Amsterdam since 1990.
The work is exhibited in the beautiful rooms of Doornburgh monastery, the building that was designed by Dom Hans van der Laan. From Henk van Os’s foreword: ‘The power of Romanesque art sometimes suddenly appears out of the tympana and capitals. The work of Masha Trebukova does the same. There is no escaping it. It is also exhibited as such in this monastic church. It is an overwhelming experience.’

Lots of activities have been organised in Harlem to mark the release of the book, including an exhibition in the ABC (architecture centre), film screenings in the Filmschuur Haarlem, lectures and tours of famous locations in Kennemerland (Haarlem, Heemstede, Bloemendaal) text Rommy Albers (Eye Filmmuseum), Soeluh van den Berg (Eye Filmmuseum), Jan Dekker, Peter Hammann, Harry Hosman, Henk Maurits, Mette Peters (Eye Filmmuseum), Hans van der Straaten, Els Vogel, Peter Voskuil, Inge de Wilde, Paul van Yperen final editing Harry Hosman and Arie Vestering A lot has changed in the Harlem world of cinema in recent decades. All the single-room cinemas have disappeared: the Lido (Houtplein), Frans Hals (Frans Halsplein), Luxor (Grote Houtstraat), Studio and Rembrandt (Grote Markt) and the Cinema Palace (Grote Houtstraat) dating from 1915. It has drastically changed the nightlife scene in the city centre of Haarlem. What’s now striking are the film-teams that regularly appear. Haarlem has been a popular filming location since the 1970’s. TV series’ like Levenslied and Divorce, numerous commercials and films including Vet hard, De aanslag and Het meisje met het rode haar were filmed there. Even Brad Pitt and George Clooney stood on a platform of Haarlem station, which was supposed to be Amsterdam CS. All this film activity is reminiscent of the 1910’s and 1920’s, when Haarlem also seemed to be the centre of the Dutch film world. Cameramen, actors and décor builders walked back and forth in the Filmfabriek Hollandia at the Spaarne, where dozens of movies were created; Haarlem actresses like Annie Bos achieved star-status. Soon afterwards the city became the home of the notorious Polygoon news and of the experimental filmmaker J.C. Mol, whose products even caused a stir in the cinemas of Paris. Much later, the Haarlem animation filmmaker Gerrit van Dijk won a Golden Bear and the Haarlem producer Cilia van Dijk won an Oscar. Haarlem film city is the first book about cinema life and the activities of all those famous and lesser-known studios, filmmakers and stars from the city and the Spaarne.
Arie Vestering (1955) is a historian and journalist. He is chief editor of the historical monthly magazine Ons Amsterdam. Harry Hosman (1952) is ja journalist and programme maker, has written about films for movie magazine Skoop and the Volkskrant, and worked at VPRO television as chief editor of film programme Stardust. This idea paid off and resulted in 100 personal stories and equally personal portraits. The project is now being released in book-form. Beautifully designed, with the photos printed in duotone. One hundred revealing stories from one hundred inspiring Dutch people.
Ariëlla Kornmehl has published various novels. De Vlindermaand has been translated into English, German, French, Hebrew, Turkish and Italian. With Een stille moeder she won the Boekdelenprijs 2011 for best reading-club book of the year. Her most recent novel Wat ik moest verzwijgen is currently being adapted for theatre and film by Edwin de Vries. Julie Blik was commissioned by Simavi and WereldOuders to work as a photographer abroad. Alongside her work in sales and marketing, she has also photographed weddings and events and created her own documentary series. She has been a full-time photographer since 2005, also photographing funerals. She is currently focussing on por trait photography, commissioned and for her own work. In 2017 she won the NRC Handelsblad Vakjuryprijs for Photography.

‘The day after which Raimund Gregorius’s life would never be the same began like any other day.’ It is 2007. After reading the opening line in the novel Night train to Lisbon by Pascal Mercier, the life of photographer Annemarie Hoogwoud would also never be the same. Almost immediately she knew that she wanted to visualise this book. ‘Only years later could I see that reading this novel had initiated everything that was to happen to me in the following years.’ Years of searching followed. With the novel and the camera in her hand, Hoogwoud travelled to Bern and Lisbon several times. She was searching for the essence of the story. Through meeting the author Pascal Mercier and actually taking a seat in the night train to Lisbon, it became increasingly clearer that she was searching for the essence of her own life. Putting the novel Night Train to Lisbon into pictures brought her closer to the essence.
Annemarie Hoogwoud studied photography vocational training at the Fotovakschool in Apeldoorn. She has been an active landscape photographer ever since completing her studies. Initially searching and broadly oriented towards nature but this later changed into a conceptual approach and she developed her own eye on landscape.
The quest is a personal visualisation of a search for answers to existential questions. In order to discover that you know nothing for sure. And this leads to inner freedom.

For the section ‘Binnenkijken’ in NRC Handelsblad Thijs Wolzak visited people with a special house every week for six years. He hardly looked at the interiors, but listened to the stories and thought about how he could capture it all in an image. He then did everything he could to create the perfect representation of the encounter: of the overview but also the smallest detail. Wolzak’s work is far removed from the imaginary world of the lifestyle glossies. His interior photos depict the real world. He shows the value of the residents, with all their bravado, but also their shortcomings. These are encounters captures in exceptional quality, with an eye for a much better podium than the pages of a newspaper. Never before in the Netherlands has there been such a consequently executed representation of the variegation of human living. The series offers an intimate view of how people try to get to grips with the world, and with their direct surroundings. Each photo is an encounter. Wolzak was often speechless during his visits: he saw how far people go in the construction of their home, the design of their own living space, how they build their nest. And what can be perhaps amazing or even absurd to the viewer is very obvious for these residents: the only logical choice. In his photos, Wolzak transfers his sense of wonder to the viewer. And this sense of wonder forms the basis for this book.
Thijs Wolzak has worked since 1988 – in commissions and free projects – on a steadily expanding collection of images. Although he uses any means that make it possible for him to control his images from top left to bottom right, he works from a documentary viewpoint. His images can be summarised as visualisations of encounters: with a person, with a place, or with an object. They are generally complex narratives, with a strong emphasis on the context of the actual subject. Wolzak’s approach is in keeping with the school of staged documentary photography.

Exhibition Fotomuseum Den Haag from 29 September 2018 to 27 January 2019 photography Klaus Baumgärtner text Hans Locher Klaus Baumgärtner (1948-2013) makes installations, objects and photos. An extensive publication of his work is now released for the first time. Baumgärtner arranges nothing in his photos. Whatever they depict, is how he found them. He always defines the framing at the time of recording the image, nothing is cropped when he prints the pictures. He also does not worry himself with dating and naming the subject. His photos just have to speak for themselves. The examples depicted in this book, made during the second half of his life, also do this.
Ar t historian Hans Locher (1938) was director of the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag from 1994 to 2000.
His photographic eye is unmistakably similar to that of photographers like Moholy-Nagy, Kertesz and Wols in the nineteen twenties and thirties. His viewpoint, however, is distinguished by a unique ambience and sensitivity. The darkness is striking in many of his pieces, equally as striking as the absence of people. Once in a while they do appear in the images, but they then merge into the other objects and are often no more than shadows. Baumgärtner’s photos are enigmatic. Where do the stairs begin in the darkness, what could that bright light be in a shed, what is going on behind that strikingly large window? There is always particular attention for what seems to be scattered over a surface. Whoever is familiar with Klaus Baumgärtner’s whole oeuvre will come across phenomena in his photos that are reminiscent of his quirky untitled plastic objects.

photography Laurent Muschel text Rolf Sachsse Laurent Muschel has travelled all over the Tropics, photographing the intimacy surrounding this special world of hair salons. The series took off in the “Afro part” of Brussels called Matonge (the name comes from a surrounding in Kinshasa) and then continued in East and West Africa: Addis Abeba and Shire (Ethiopia), Abidjan and Grand Bassam (Ivory Coast), Accra (Ghana), and Banjul (The Gambia). It expanded to further tropical areas: Dhaka (Bangladesh), Havana (Cuba) and Jericoacoara (Brazil). The journey was accompanied by many short cuts and extensions along the way…
Laurent Muschel (Strasbourg 1968) studied phylosophy aan de Sorbonne in Paris. He lives and works in Brussels with his wife and three kids. His work was exhibited in Belgium, France, Germany, the USA and in Asia. A previous published book by him is Back to the Museum.
Laurent Muschel likes to photograph the small details and gestures, inviting us to come closer and explore further. At the back of these hair salons, people are eating, talking, sleeping, or watching football matches on small TV screens. The multitude and diversity of the scenarios in Laurent Muschel’s pictures are part of his narrative principle. By doing so, he opens up an often overlooked world. But in reality, hair is the pretext for something else: a pure photographic pleasure where a pair of scissors becomes more than a simple tool without soul. Through his pictures, the photographer transforms the business of hairdressing, which appears at first glance as “banal”, into a fetish ceremony. He turns the salons into churches, the chairs into thrones, the counters or tables with their hair dressing accessories into altars. For this is how the spaces in Laurent Muschel’s photographs can be viewed; the photographer kneels down before beauty and its creation, an admiration with which we join. Syktyvkar is a city in the north of Russia, the small capital of the Komi Republic, a Finno-Hugric ethnical group colonized by the Russians centuries ago. The two ethnic groups, Komi and Russians, have lived long together, mixing their roots, merging their iconography and traditions. Komi traditional folklore, Soviet symbolism and contemporary Russian culture have merged into the daily life of this provincial city. Syktyvkar, in Komi language: “the city on the river” is an unknown entity even for most of the Russians. A small autonomous capital of the north, close to the Ural Mountains and the land of the Nenets. During the Tsarist time this was a place of political exile and many war prisoners were sent here. During World War II the Red Army forced hundreds of German prisoners into the region, many of the descendents are still living here. The Soviets used the region as a giant Gulag, prisoners were sent in the “labor camps” from all over the USSR. Many survived and stayed, working in the paper factory of Eshva, a suburban part of Syktyvkar. Nowadays most of the young people want to move to Saint Petersburg or Moscow, where there are more possibilities and a more lively future. Who stays complains that the city will decade and vanish, forgotten even by its own citizens. For a strange twist of fate this remote place has become the second home of Filippo Zambon. He experienced the daily life of a place that has little by little unfolded it’s secrets.
Filippo Zambon (1981) was born in Florence and studied art history at the Università di Lettere e Filosofia. He has lived and worked in Helsinki since 2006, where he gained a Master’s in Fine Ar ts at the University of Ar ts. His work is exhibited in galleries and museums all over Europe.

Elizabeth Koetje set out to capture moments of girlhood until the dawn of teenagehood. Thus, a photographic journey with her daughter began. Over a period of eight years, a body of work emerged showing a solitary girl in spaces varying from vast desert plains to narrow city sidewalks. The images are, for the most part, romantic and dream-like with implied narratives of freedom, curiosity, discovery and adventure.
Elizabeth Koetje was born in South-Africa. After gaining her Bachelor’s in Drama (Hons) she spent ten years working as a writer, director and actor in the theatre. After achieving her diploma in photography, she established a photo studio in Johannesburg. She has lived and worked in Amsterdam since 2011.

Małgorzata Stankiewicz is a Polish photographer and lives in Switzerland. On 25 March 2016 the Polish Minister for the Environment approved the largescale felling of the ancient Białowieża forest. This happened under the guise of forest management. Małgorzata started photographing the forest in order to record just how unique this woodland is. With her very own interpretation of the images, she compiled the book which is a protest against the irreversible destruction of a unique area of natural beauty.
Małgorzata Stankiewicz was born in Olsztyn, Poland and now lives and works in Zurich, Switzerland. After studying in London and New York she began working as an independent photographer.

Dutch Posters, 1960-1996, A Selection by Anthon Beeke (now a collector’s item) was released in 1996. There has been no other overview book of Dutch posters published ever since. Time for part 2: Dutch Posters 1997-2017. A total of 150 designers were invited to contribute and they together submitted 3,500 posters. Around 350 of these posters have been included in this book. The selection was made partly based on presenting the visual story told by the images that fortify each other or react with each other. This overview of twenty years of Dutch cultural posters provides a beautiful representaiton of the development of the Dutch poster. The poster today holds a very different place in out streetscape than 22 years ago. Frederike Huygen (author) has placed the posters against the background of the developments in the profession and of the medium. Bob Witman (author) examines the criteria used by Beeke in his selection process. It is partly this personal choice that makes this an interesting book, as Beeke’s criteria are sharply formulated in relation to legibility, concentration, topical position, aesthetic and emotion. This project was initiated by Saiid & Smale.
Anthon Beeke (1940-2018) was a graphic designer. He was adjunct director at Total Design and established studio Anthon Beeke in 1981. He is known for his noteworthy posters for Zuidelijk toneel Globe, Toneelgroep Amsterdam, Holland Festival, the Theatercompagnie and the Kunstrai. Many of his designs have received awards. Beeke’s recognitions include the H.N. Werkmanprijs, the Grafische Cultuurprijs and the Frans Banninck Cocq Penning from Amsterdam city council. Saiid & Smale is a multidisciplinary graphic design agency. Janneke Smale and Omar Saiid both worked at Studio Anthon Beeke before setting up their own agency in 2010.

Afslag Eindhoven performs
THEATER
Afslag Eindhoven has been performing for ten years. The theatre company is celebrating this with a festive jubilee including music, an exhibition and a book in which all performances have been given a place. Gerrie Fiers and Yvonne van Beukering started a theatre company in Eindhoven ten years ago, against the (time) flow and with powerful and poetic theatre in special locations. Performances on football pitches and in warehouses, with lorries and with homeless people; theatre company Afslag Eindhoven has created a series of wonderful performances in its ten-year existence. Afslag Eindhoven performs is a special browsing book, crammed full of photos of the visual performances of the celebrating theatre company.
